FORT WORTH'S RESTAURANT GUIDE

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR

Connie Bally

It would be impossible to set out to create the August edition of “Fort Worth Foodies Presents…” without the weather being as big of an influence as I sit in my office, as it is when I go outside. It’s blasted hot and even though it can be inhibiting, I let it be the force that shaped the magazine.

This month we take a deep dive into some of the restaurants that have indoor entertainment such as arcades and movie theaters. We also included a few that we know of that offer a Trivia night or Music Bingo once a week along with their full menu. It’s another way for you to get out, stay comfortably cool, eat well and have an enjoyable evening. The list turned out to be so interesting, I hope you spend a few minutes and click on all of the links to see what’s in store in each place. I had no idea the wonderful world of gaming and indoor entertainment had taken such interesting leaps of technology since the last time I walked into an arcade that had uneven and squeaky wooden floors many, many years ago. We salute the searing heat with recipes made from garden fresh vegetables and peak of ripeness fruit, adult beverages that are created from ice cream using distilled spirits created in Fort Worth, a glimpse into the operations of a roadside fruit stand and so much more! In a month or so, to our best guestimate, Fort Worth Foodies will reach 100,000 members! It’s a huge milestone for us and one we want to celebrate with all of you. If you have a restaurant, are a caterer or purveyor and would like to donate a gift card or non-alcoholic item, please DM me. We will be putting together an incredible gift basket to be given to one lucky person randomly drawn. The admins and I might personally deliver it to you! How much fun would that be?

Little could I have ever imagined what a force for commerce in this city Fort Worth Foodies could become. We’ve connected over food, stories, photos and memories almost daily and it’s a celebration of our city in so many meaningful ways. We thank you once again for being a part of this amazing community. So lets raise a toast to the first 100,000 members and continue onto even greater numbers. So many businesses have survived and even thrived because of us. I salute you all for your consistent support of the culinary arts in this wonderful town of ours. Please stay safe in this blasted heat! Keep flipping until you get to the article with the live links on places to go that offer indoor entertainment and wonderful food. I hope to see you there.

Thank you for your understanding, Connie The perfect summertime refresher from Muy Frio Margaritas FTW

An Italian Favorite in Fort Worth!

Fort Worth Foodies is more than just a foodies group! We have several groups you may or may not be aware of. Over time, we’ve discovered certain sub-groups were needed to keep the larger group running smoothly and to offer a more specific focus to other interests such as our Plant Based & Vegan group for example. Here are the names and links of all of the groups we’ve spun off and still monitor for growth and appropriate content. All of the groups are a lot of fun and serve useful purposes so feel free to join one or all of them, as your interests dictate.

Fort Worth Foodies

This is where most of our members congregate, comment and contribute.

Fort Worth Foodies Home Chef

This group was formed to give the home cooks a space to showcase their kitchen creations.

Fort Worth Foodies Plant Based & Vegan This site is to exchange information on restaurants that carry plant forward menu items.

Fort Worth Foodies Buy/Sell

This is our selling group. If you have dishes, kitchen appliances, etc you’d like to re-home, this site might be a good place for you to post.

Fort Worth Foodies Local Purveyors

was intended to allow the bakers, caterers and small batch cottage industry folks a space where they can showcase what they’re making and how they can be contacted.

Who remembers sipping on some sun Tea on the front porch, nibbling Grandma's specialty peach pie on the Veranda and enjoying Chicken-fried Steak in the midst of a family gathering? All of these evoke memories of delicious days gone by. Just because our lives are more technological and faster than before , it doesn't mean our food must come from a drive -thru window. We can still delight in the flavors of a slower time while maintaining our modern-day lives. Taking time to enjoy preparing favorites for our families is comforting and rejuvenating . What are some classic dishes you prepare for your family that creates some heartwarming memories Which is your favorite to make ? Last -Minute Dinner Guests, Mexican Night, Neighborhood Get-Together, Easy Dinner, or Holiday Get-Together. Whether it's casual or elegant, entertaining family and friends is at the heart of the family kitchen. Whether lingering over coffee or hosting a Brunch, nothing beats a nourishing, wholesome Breakfast. It's a wonderful way to start the day with your family or friends. Any day of the week Breakfast time is something to look forward to. And if it's the weekend, all the better! I remember when my kids were growing up I'd lounge and enjoy the fat Sunday paper. It was one of the week's high points , an occasion that calls for a treat. Pancakes, waffles and French Toast all fit the bill. Dressed up or down eggs are glorious in every guise.

Beautiful Brunches The next time you're planning a gathering, why not opt for a Brunch buffet? Breakfast and brunch foods are perfect for a buffet. And to decorate the table, go for food items. A glass bowl filled with lemons, oranges, or apples would make a lovely centerpiece. A basket of fresh artichokes and lemons; a vase of orange slices and cranberries; or a plate with a tall pillar candle surrounded by whole nuts - each of these easily makes a beautiful centerpiece. -Celia Valadez Guerrero

Thank you Mark French, owner of Boho Bistro and the most prolific chef I know, for stepping up. I was at a loss to try to define todays culinary offerings both in the home and commercially. My question is “How would you define Traditional Cooking" Our lives and our culture are so rich with the influx of immigrants who have forever influenced our culinary scene. Can you please help me sum it up?” Firstly, I appreciate the opportunity to respond to such a fun, interesting, and provocative question. Independence Day in the United States is a perfect holiday for those born here, and those that came here from elsewhere hoping for a better future. Food tells stories of history, migration, weather patterns, war and conquest. Being a lover of hot dogs, I do really enjoy it as a medium for a proper fusion. The Los Angeles dog shows a latin flare in its technique by being a grilled dog, with open fire roasted jalapeno wrapped in bacon and cooled with the added fat of mayo. The Lebanese version of a shawarma is such a fun street sandwich to me; so a hot dog version just made sense. All beef hot dog with some hummus, roasted garlic aioli, topped with some shredded carrot, pickle spear, and pickled beets with some spicy tahini is a great hot dog. A quintessential crossover as exemplified by Roy Choi, and the whole L.A. southside and eastside scene, is the crossover between Korean food, and latin, and especially mexican food. I dare you not to love a taco done in Gochugaru, and marinated in citrus and ssamjang, topped with cilantro and onion and some kimchi. Lastly the iconic, beloved American classic the hamburger. Fourth of July feels perfect for Luau style family gatherings. So I give a nod and props to Hawaii on my fourth burgers and marinade them in teriyaki style sauce and add grilled pineapple ring, a grilled spam slice and top it with a citrus infused bbq sauce.

100,000 Member Celebration Give-Away By Connie Bally

It looks like in a month or two Fort Worth Foodies will be hitting 100,000 members! We’re currently adding 50 to 100 (plus or minus) members a day so at the outside we’ll hit it in October. I think August is a bit too optimistic. We are going to have a MEGA celebration to honor this MEGA achievement by giving away a MEGA gift basket to one lucky winner randomly drawn. My admins and I may even personally deliver it! We are reaching out to the restaurant community that we happily promote, to donate a gift card ($50 or $100) to be included in the basket. I’m even thinking of asking RTIC for a soft-sided insulated tote to be used as the basket and I’ll fill it with the gift cards, maybe a really pretty cutting board, a Fort Worth based cookbook and a few more items to make it a gift basket spilling over with wonderful items and worthy of the event. Would you like to be included in this momentous occasion by donating a gift card or perhaps another non-alcoholic item? If so, please DM me through the Facebook site Fort Worth Foodies and we’ll get you included in the donation material. You’ll receive numerous shout-outs to the group as a heartfelt “Thank you” and some other honorable mentions to make sure you feel as honored to gift us a card as we feel receiving it.

The Food-Storage Trend that Saves Money & the Planet By: Celia Guerrero

If you follow any Foodies or Healthy-Living experts on Instagram , then you’ve probably seen the rising trend of turning ordinary refrigerators into works of Art. Picture a rainbow of colors on display inside mason jars of all sizes. This storage solution, aka the “jar method ,” has hit the scene as is quickly becoming a phenomenon as a new way to decrease fridge chaos and store all of your favorite foods while keeping them fresh longer. The good news ? It will help save money and the planet. Mothers with small children run a busy household. The benefits of this jar method saves them so much time in the kitchen. Having food prepared and stored for the week will save them so much time and a bit of sanity. At the end of your busy day you almost won’t have to think hard about what’s for dinner. Bake a little from this jar , shake a little from this jar , mix in some of that, and voilà-dinner is ready. It will help you maintain a healthier lifestyle mainly by staying prepared. Sounds better than digging through the fridge for some old vegetables, right?

23

Ready to get started? There are a few must haves. First, find 10 or so Mason jars in a variety of sizes; the sealed lid is key to keeping freshness in! Second, stock up on a plethora of beautiful foods to go inside, get creative , and try fermented food like kimchi or sauerkraut, which are great for gut health! If you shop weekly, create a flexible meal plan for the week, then shop directly from the plan. Make sure all your jars are washed and ready to go before you start prepping all the food. The less time your food is exposed to air , the fresher it will stay. The prep time may seem like more time up front , but it should save you tons of time throughout the week when you need a quick meal or snack on the go… and who knows? You may even be motivated to eat more veggies! If you’re not sure you want to adopt this method or even sure you will like it. That’s okay too. I don’t want you putting off getting your fridge in gear because you're saving for all-glass storage containers. Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can. In my early days of fridge organization there was plastic. If it can contain things it can help you take the first step. Then you can upgrade your storage over time. - Some creative fridge storage ideas: - Old condiment containers for pre-chopped fresh fruit and homemade condiments - Old spaghetti sauce jars or other repurposed glass jars in place of Mason jars for batched-prepped food storage - Plastic baggies for salad greens (make sure are very dry and a napkin in the baggie) - Old plastic containers that you’d otherwise recycle I hope you find this fridge storage container guide useful in developing and sustaining your healthy lifestyle! LET’S LIVE BETTER TOGETHER!

Enjoy one of our 9 Signature Flavors

Things

Heating up

In Cowtown By Connie Bally

As the temps continue to hover in the triple digits and patio dining isn’t an option, the restaurants are once again pivoting to provide activities that will bring you through their doors to enjoy a meal, quench your thirst and melt away the hours with entertainment. There are more restaurants than I realized when I asked the group Fort Worth Foodies (https://www.facebook.com/groups/fortworthfoodies) to help build a list. My initial thoughts were board games or bowling alleys but what quickly evolved was an exciting list of restaurants offering interactive cinema experiences, climate-controlled golf, billiards, and arcade games. The pinball experience is now elevated from the dimly lit, squeaky wooden floor arcades, with machines that whirred and buzzed away with clanks and thunks, to today's version that offers games on futuristic-looking machines where the player is treated to excellent quality surround sound and visuals. Some even offer virtual reality headsets for a total immersion experience. Other restaurants offer a Music Bingo or Trivia night. The names are live links so you can click on each one and you’ll be directed to the website so you can see the location, hours of operation, specials, and activities. We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the food served at most of the restaurants on this list. Great attention has been given to deliver the customer a meal that goes far beyond the microwaved pizza and chewy burger served on a stale bun that were common a few years ago.

26

The entertainment restaurants of today take their menu development very seriously and you’ll find an impressive array of high-quality dishes. Cocktails, wine and beer are available along with mocktails and other non-alcoholic options. Some even have an enforced dress code to ensure it is family-friendly. We hope you enjoy and make good use of the list below. If you’re looking for board games, arcades, bowling or climate-controlled golf, this list should give you plenty of ideas of places to go to eat, enjoy entertainment and stay cool. Perhaps you’ll even discover a new favorite spot you’ll want to visit all year round.
