I feel like I won the lottery this week. The prize wasn’t anything as pedestrian as money, however, it provided riches beyond the tangible. What you ask has me so thrilled? Well, someone who is likely an assistant of an assistant of a lackey of none other than our very own Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault, sent us an Op-Ed for publishing consideration. Now in all seriousness, when an MP sends us something we do take the time to read it. In reading the submission I had mixed feelings. While filled with information, much like many things coming from political offices it had its fair share of spin. Another common thread was no real solutions and lack of much tangible science to back up the restrictions facing Canadians. We will post the submission online for those who want to read it there. There is a lot of hype surrounding plastics in the ocean and how plastic bans are needed to change the course of our ocean pollution. I’ve commented before about how a straw or plastic bag in Vegreville will not end up in the Pacific unless you drive it there and toss it in yourself. Despite that, I am for reducing pollution and plastics do need attention. Micro-plastics, which we have also become common knowledge have been found EVERYWHERE including in the arctic and in newborn babies.

ON THE OTHER HAND, I also believe in following the science. So, let’s take a look at that. Ocean Conservancy is a non-profit environmental advocacy group based in Washington, D.C., United States that has done a lot of research along with their partners on pollution in our oceans. They are also great at providing real stats on the issue of pollution unlike some groups who like to grab headlines with stunts and shocking photos. Ocean Conservancy collects not only a lot of trash, but also a lot of data. They organize annual coastal cleanups and have an app that is tied to the world’s largest marine debris database. In 2010 they convened an international group of scientists to study the data and they made some interesting finds. First, the North Pacific Garbage Patch is definitely growing (4-16 times greater than previously thought), but the contents of that mass consists almost 50 percent of lost or abandoned fishing gear. They also pointed out that micro-plastics are not only an ocean problem. That plastic bag that blew into some bush somewhere will eventually break down and those micro-plastics will end up in a river or the soil we grow our food in. Scientists have also found evidence that plastic pollution is linked with disease in coral reefs and that it is affecting zooplankton, the very base of the ocean food chain. Data collected from their 2017 International cleanups provided a top ten list of items collected. 1. CIGARETTE BUTTS - 2,412,151 2. FOOD WRAPPERS - 1,739,743 3. PLASTIC BEVERAGE BOTTLES - 1,569,135 4. PLASTIC BOTTLE CAPS - 1,091,107 5. PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS - 757,523 6. OTHER PLASTIC BAGS - 746,211 7. STRAWS, STIRRERS - 643,562 8. PLASTIC TAKE OUT/ AWAY CONTAINERS - 632,874 9. PLASTIC LIDS - 624,878 10. FOAM TAKE OUT/ AWAY CONTAINERS - 580,570 As you can see, cigarette butts are the biggest problem with regards to volume. Laid end to end, that would extend around 210 km. In total volume, 2017 saw some 9.28 million kg of ocean trash collected. Also, since scientists are not all numbers and no fun, they also kept tabs on the “weird finds” around the world. In the mobility category, Bermuda found themselves a six seater golf cart, Norway a scooter, Hong Kong a stroller and Finland a full size car. Jamaica found a couch, Venezuela a satellite dish, Ireland a tractor tire and for our claim to weird ocean pollution, Canada tallied up a sled. Questions from the science remain. We still don’t know if plastic pollution impacts human health; where the majority of ocean plastic ends up; and to what degree many of the proposed

ATCO electrician switches out street light to LED model. (Michelle Pinon/Photo)

Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Crews with ATCO were busy converting street lights to LED’s throughout the Town of Vegreville last week. Hundreds of high-pressure sodium bulbs were replaced with LED lighting. Some of the benefits of LED lights include: The benefits of LED lights include: • Environmental benefits due to lower CO2 emissions associated with operation • Better colour rendering and lighting uniformity • Reduced light pollution • Long lifespan of up to 100,000

hours • No warmup necessary • 10-year warranty on new LED heads As of June 20th, ATCO has begun working in the northwest corner of Vegreville and will be working their way east. Workers will then move south of Highway 16A and progress east to west. The streetlight conversion is anticipated to take four to five weeks to complete. ing just over $287,000 to convert all of its street lights to LED after being approached by ATCO. Corporate Services Director Meghan Saskiw said, “With the conversion to LED, ATCO will now service and maintain all lights without additional costs to the Town. The investment of $287,342 will cover the additional fees for 67 months, but there will also be savings realized by the Town in energy consumption and repairs.”

Rogers Expands 5G Wireless Technology Network Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Rogers has expanded its 5G network to Vegreville and surrounding area. Warren Fletcher, Vice President of Access Networks at Rogers, said Rogers was the first to launch 5G in Canada in early 2020, and since then, we’ve been rolling out the service to communities across the Rogers 5G is available now to Rogers wireless customers in Vegreville on Infinite plans with 5G devices. We are proud to operate Alberta’s largest and most reliable 5G network, and what customers will experience today is a high-performance wireless experience that will connect them to what matters most. As it evolves, 5G will offer new experiences and capabilities, including saving farmers time and money with wireless sensors that monitor soil conditions, autonomous vehicles, early earthquake detection

technology, drone delivery services and much more.” For people who are not totally familiar with 5G and its capabilities, Fletcher explained that, “5G is a next generation wireless network technology that over time will deliver unprecedented speed, instant response times and fast, reliable connections, fundamentally changing how we live and work.” Comparatively, 5G has far more capabilities than 4G. According to the company: • 5G brings unprecedented speeds: 5G can reach peak data rates of up to 100X faster than 4G LTE — this means you can stream, download, and upload large quantities of data at speeds like never before. • 5G brings greater network capacity: 5G supports up to 10 million connections/km – 10X more capacity than 4G LTE. The network will power the growing connectivity at home and across communities. • 5G brings Instant Responses: 5G reduc-

es response times to as low as 1 millisecond, or up to 10X lower than 4G LTE for ultra low latency, enabling experiences like multi-player cloud gaming on the go and autonomous driving. Fletcher added that, “This 5G expansion was fully led and funded by Rogers. Rogers 5G now reaches more than 1,600 communities across the country, including more than 950 in Western Canada.”

FROM THE PAGES OF THE VEGREVILLE OBSERVER COMPILED

BY

DAN BEAUDETTE

90 Years Ago – June 29, 1932

On Thursday evening Miss Grant was feted by the high school teachers at a party given at the home of Miss Wright. On behalf of the staff, Mr. Hayhurst presented Miss Grant with a lovely silver basket filled with iris. Miss Grant has been on the high school staff for the past three years, and is now leaving to make her home at Flin Flon, Manitoba. Misses Chinworth and Crawford have resigned from the public school staff. Appointments to succeed them have been made by the school board; the new teacher to be Misses Genevieve Arthur and Meryl McLeod. Walter Dinwoodie has accepted the position of secretary-treasurer of the Municipal District of Patricia. Miss Margaret Dinwoodie is teaching at Avon school in his place for the remainder of the term. Mr. Haugins, who lives on Dr. Arthur’s farm near Sick Man Lake received a rather unexpected visit from a black bear. It has spent the morning ravaging various pig pens in the district and wandered into Mr. Haugin’s yard about noon. Mr. Haugins was only about 10 feet from the bear when he shot it. The animal measured 6 ½ feet from the heel to the end of its nose.

75 Years Ago – July 2, 1947

Another resignation from the high school staff is announced. Miss Ruth Freebury, whose excellent qualifications as a teacher are so well known, has received an appointment to the Edmonton teaching staff. She gave the school here the finest of service and her removal leaves another gap in the staff which will be hard to fill. A hail storm on Sunday afternoon swept over the district west of town, Parkgrove and Royal Park, and did a lot of damage. The hail stones were not large but there were lots of them. The storm came as far east as Ormy Trimble’s and R. Henley’s farms but its main force was apparently spent through the Royal Park area. Jack Pinder of the Bank of Montreal staff here has been transferred to the branch at Thorsby. Jack is being replaced by Mickey Barringan of Edmonton. C. Freeman, who has been conducting a hardware business at Ryley for several years has sold out and he and Mrs. Freeman will go to the coast about August first to reside.

50 Years Ago – June 29, 1972

A strong representation of businessmen and citizens in general expressed opposition to the C.N.R.’s proposed closure of the station here and subsequent removal of the agent, at a meeting held at the Vegreville Elk’s Hall. Harold Mori wound up his year as president of the Vegreville Junior Chamber of Commerce on Saturday night when the annual President’s Night and awards were made to active members of that group. Mr. Mori will succeeded by Zeke Onushko, who will in addition to holding the post of vice-president, also won the award of Jaycee of the Year. A highlight of the evening was the announcement that Alex Elder had been awarded a Senatorship in Jaycee International. Alberta Wheat Board welcomes the provision of 2.000 hopper type cars for use in grain transportation in Canada. The announcement by the Government that such a fleet of railway cars is being purchased for the Canadian Wheat Board in time for use is transporting grain during the coming winter, recognizes a weakness in Canada’s grain transportation system and promises to alleviate a chronic problem.

25 Years Ago - June 24, 1997

The ground had been broken and construction of Vegreville’s new emergency services building will begin immediately. Fire chief Dale Lefebvre confirmed construction will start right away on the 11,200 sq. ft. building on a 3.89 acre parcel. A local Canada Post employee has received the corporation’s highest recognition award. Ron Bilyk was presented with the Golden Postmark Award at a special ceremony in Ottawa last week. The awards recognize dedication and commitment on the part of Canada Post employees who are willing to “go that extra mile for their customers.” It’s a new era at Vegreville’s Kal Tire outlet. Frank and Judi Becker became the new owners of Frank’s Tire and Auto on June 12, but will operate the business as Kal Tire. Students of the month at the Mundare School were Whitley Johnson and Stephan Walinski. Whitley a Grade 2 student, had learned good work habits, tries her best each day, plays fairly, gets along well with her peers and helps in the care of the classroom. Stephen a grade 4 student, is a hardworking, co-operative student who has shown steady progress in his school work throughout the school year. Stephen’s friendly manner and cheerful attitude have made him a popular member of the class.

F1 Driver Sebastian Vettel’s Oil Sands Criticism Rife with Hypocrisy Deborah Jaremko Canadian Energy Centre German Formula One driver Sebastian Vettel sat on a podium in Montreal last week in gear emblazoned with his sponsor logos – including Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) oil giant Saudi Aramco, owned by the tyranny state of Saudi Arabia – and told reporters that Alberta’s oil sands is “criminal.” He had arrived earlier to participate in the Montreal Grand Prix in a T-shirt calling the oil sands a “climate crime.” The hypocrisy in these actions is staggering. Here’s why: Formula One racing relies on fossil fuels From the racing helmets and protective gear to the enormous logistical undertaking of moving teams and equipment around the world, the massive event location operations and, of course, the high-performance race cars and gasoline they run on, F1 would not be possible without fossil fuels. Approximately 256,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions are generated for a single F1 season, the organization says. The organization has set a goal to reach net-zero emissions. So have the largest companies in Canada’s oil sands, and they’re on a solid foundation of successful improvements in environmental performance. Canadian oil leads the world in environmental, social and governance (ESG) metrics Among the world’s top 10 oil reserve holders, Canada ranks number one across the board in environmental, social and governance (ESG) metrics like environmental protection, social progress, and the absence of vio-

lence and terrorism. That’s according to rankings derived from Yale University’s Environmental Performance Index, the Social Progress Imperative Index, and the World Bank’s Worldwide Governance Indicators. While Canada is number one in all categories, Saudi Arabia ranks number eight in environmental performance, seventh in social progress, fifth in political stability and the absence of violence/terrorism, and ninth for freedom of expression. Human Rights Watch says that in Saudi Arabia there is “near-total repression of independent civil society and critical voices” and “ongoing repression and contempt for basic rights.” Meanwhile, Canada is a stable democracy with a focus on labour rights, civil rights, environmental protection and Indigenous opportunity. Vettel’s choice to fly the flag for Saudi Arabia while decrying Canada’s oil sands industry as “criminal” is disgraceful. Canada’s oil sands is on the path to net-zero emissions Canada’s oil sands industry is doing more to reduce emissions than other major producing jurisdictions, according to BMO Capital Markets. Oil sands companies have successfully reduced emissions per barrel, or emissions intensity, by 20 per cent since 2009, according to IHS Markit. The consultancy expects total oil sands emissions – not just emissions per barrel – to start going down within the next five years. And the six largest oil sands companies, representing more than 95 per cent of production, have jointly committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. The world will require oil and gas for decades to come Oil and gas are expected to be required to supply the

U.S. Abortion Rights Ruling Does Not Apply to Canada Michelle Pinon News Advertiser The U.S. Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade ruling that had previously secured constitutional protections for abortion in America for nearly 50 years. The new ruling, handed down last week, has the potential to claw back abortion access across the U.S. by allowing states to restrict or outright ban the procedure. “This is a decision of a foreign court that does not apply to Canada. The legal status of abortion in Canada falls strictly within federal jurisdiction. There has been no change in policy in our province and none is proposed,” stated Savannah Johannsen, Press Secretary for the Associate Minister of Status of Women Jackie ArmstrongHomeniuk. Steve Buick, Press Secretary to Health Minister Jason Copping, provided additional details regarding surgical abortions in Alberta. He stated that: • Publicly funded surgical abortions in Alberta are provided mainly by independent clinics under contract to AHS. • Like all independent providers, the clinics are able to provide services to non-insured patients, including patients from outside Canada. This will not change. • We expect any contracted provider to give priority to their role in serving Albertans, and we will monitor use of services to ensure we maintain access to publicly funded care. • Abortions are funded and provided in Alberta on the same basis as other publicly funded health services. • AHS allocates resources to meet the need for abortions along with other services, including deciding what services are offered at each site and by independent providers under contract. • The number of surgical abortions is declining in recent years as use of the non-surgical option (mifegymiso) increases.

There are two independent clinics that provide the great majority of surgical abortions in Alberta, located in Edmonton and Calgary. The location of each independent clinic is a decision of the clinic, balancing the demand for their services, their ability to access the skilled staff and other resources they need, and the preferences of clients.” Buick pointed out that, “CIHI reports numbers of abortions in all provinces. There were about 12,000 in Alberta in 2020 compared to about 12,800 in 2018.” ED RV SE E R UN

Art From a Kind Heart Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Local artist Mary Harasewich hosted a Gigantic Art Show and Sale which was a closing out sale on June 11 at Senior Citizens Sunshine Club of Vegreville. Mary put 40 of her paintings up for sale. “The proceeds are all going to help people with the crisis in Ukraine, (Vegreville and Area Stands With Ukraine). I want to support the poor people from Ukraine that came here as they have to get settled in and everything. They need financial help. My paintings are mostly of scenery and a few are of people. I get my inspiration from my head. I just make up whatever I paint.

This is it. I am not going to paint anymore. My eyesight is not the best, I have macular degeneration and I am almost 90-years-old. I might discover a different hobby,” Mary said. Mary’s daughter Carolyne Kozio and her granddaughter Savana Lavoie were at this art show where they both were showcasing and selling some of their artwork. Carolyne said they come from a long line of artists and wanted to feature their work. “I am quite new to this. I only discovered painting in the fall of 2021. If I sell the painting I created of a sunflower, I will donate the proceeds to help people who come from Ukraine to Canada,” Carolyne said.

Pysanka Festival Will Stand Tall For Ukrainian Heritage

Yuri Andryjowycz & Olesia Luciw-Andryjowycz Hospodar and Hospodynia

Welcome

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent President of Vegreville Cultural Association Curtis Zorniak would like to welcome everyone to Vegreville 49th Annual Pysanka Festival. When asked why they host this festival, Zorniak said, “We at the Vegreville Cultural Association want to bring the meaning of community back, and give everyone the opportunity to enrich each other’s lives with the elements that culture, heritage, and community bring.” When asked how it all came to be, Zorniak replied, “In the early seventies an idea was brought forward by some citizens of Vegreville of Ukrainian descent. The idea was that Vegreville, being a center of Ukrainian settlement in northeastern Alberta, might be a logical place for hosting a Ukrainian festival. Such an event, which could become an annual attraction, might be a most innovative and appropriate way to exhibit and preserve some of the finest aspects of our cultural heritage. It could also provide one of the best opportunities for the young generation to learn about their rich culture and for the people in general, to share in the understanding of each other’s ethnic values through music, song and dance. The community’s objectives for hosting it are to foster understanding among all people and to enrich the Canadian Mosaic by promoting the arts and culture of the Ukrainian people, and of people of other national, racial, or ethnic origins, and of people of other cultures, who settled in Canada. To promote an affordable

opportunity for cultural and social activities. To encourage and foster and develop among all people the recognition of the importance of culture to people. To enrich the culture of various peoples in Alberta. To foster understanding among all people of the culture of people in Alberta of various national, racial, or ethnic origin. To provide a meeting place for the consideration and discussion of questions affecting the cultural interests of the community. The festival is going to be different this year than the past two years because we will be live again with no Covid restrictions, so far! We went virtual the last two years. We have dedicated this year’s theme in our program book to We Stand with Ukraine, and our proceeds from the festival will be donated to the Vegreville and Area Stands with Ukraine and other Ukrainian humanitarian needs. My favorite part of the Pysanka Festival is friends and family coming together and making new friends through experiencing all the many wonderful events and activities at the Pysanka Festival,” Zorniak mention. There are no age restrictions or requirements to attend or participate. We cater to all age groups young and old. When asked what will make the festival special this year, Zorniak said, “Being live again, in person and being able to see people friends and family that we haven’t seen over the past two years and coming together to have a great time, some great food, and maybe a Dybosia or two. Slava Ukraini! Heroyam slava. Glory to Ukraine – Glory to the heroes,” Zorniak added.

So, I thought I would go to Canada and get some International experience and then I will come back to live in India. But when I came to Canada the people were so nice and the culture was very nice. The people were very helpful and very well organized. The common structure, health care structure, and the governor sector is very well planned in Canada. Later, I applied and got the opportunity to work in Vegreville as an Assistant Manager for Walmart. It is really neat to live in Canada because I had the chance to learn about different cultures which included Mennonites and Ukrainian culture and how diverse Canada was but still we are working together. There didn’t seem to be any racism in Canada. I have seen this in other countries. But I have never personally experienced racism in my life. This has motivated me and my wife to stay in Canada. I became a Canadian citizen in 2018 and in 2019, my wife became a Canadian citizen. The climate is very beautiful in Canada. In India it is too hot. In June it is usually 47 C or 48 C. It is very humid. In Canada, we don’t see that much extreme warm weather like that. We don’t mine the winters here. We love this weather and we even love winter and the snow,” Manish said. When asked if he missed anything about India, Manish said he misses his family who are still in India, the Indian festivals of Holi and Diwali, as well as, the street food.

Rob fondly remembers the first year of the fireworks show, when he and Cindy served hot dogs out of their garage to attendees. “It’s just good fun,” said Rob, who remembers firing off red firecrackers when he was five or six-years-old. He said Cindy loves fireworks and they would celebrate Canada Day and Christmas with fireworks. Rob even took a fireworks certification course because he was so interested in putting on shows. Rob said his grandson Justice has been helping him with the fireworks show for several years along with good friend Gilvie Langdon. Rob said

This year, Cindy is involved in organizing a number of kids’ activities for the youngsters to enjoy that afternoon and evening. Some of the activities include: parade, hot dogs, cake, children’s games and entertainment.

Ask the Guys Dear Classified Guys, When I bought my house, I let my brother-in-law paint the exterior. That was a mistake. He did a horrible job. Not only did he buy the wrong color, but it's only one year later and the paint is peeling. Fortunately, I only paid him with a case of beer. This time I'm looking for a more reputable house painter. How can I make sure that the service I hire is qualified for the job…and buys the right color?

Duane “Cash” Holze & Todd “Carry” Holze 06/26/22 ©The Classified Guys®

• • •

Cash: If you get an estimate

that quotes the price in cases of beer, you may want to look elsewhere. It sounds like you paid your brother-inlaw just about right for his quality of work. Carry: I'm just hoping that you didn't pay him with a premium beer. Cash: It shouldn't be too difficult to find a service that will do a better job. But this time, you may want to check the color BEFORE they start. Carry: There are a variety of painting services from which to choose. When you have them quote the job, ask to see a certificate of insurance. You want to make sure you find a service that has general liability coverage and

workman's compensation. Cash: Determining the contractor's quality of work is actually quite simple, yet it's amazing how many people don't make the effort. Some painters may offer you photos of past jobs as testimony of their work. But a photograph, especially one taken from the curb, can barely show you the color of the house, let alone the quality of work. Most pictures are taken just after completion of the job. That's no help. Everything looks good when it's new. Carry: The only real method to determine the quality of work is to speak with past clients, or go see the houses for yourself. Ask the painter for several references; some that are recent and some that

are at least three-years-old. The recent ones can tell you about current customer service while older clients can attest to how well the paint has held up. Cash: As you know from your brother-in-law's job, some contractors may skip the preparation steps. That leads to peeling, blistering or other damaging affects. For best results, ask the service to detail their preparation steps such as power-washing, scraping, sanding and priming. When done correctly, the paint job should last you five to ten years. Carry: That's good. You don't want to be hiring your brother-inlaw any time soon. Who knows what color he might paint the house next.

Fast Facts Color Choices

Reader Humor Turning Blue

Believe it or not, the color you choose can make a difference in the longevity of your paint. The pigments used in making paint colors are inherently vulnerable to sunlight and the damaging effects of ultraviolet light. In fact, certain colors are likely to fade quicker than others. Blue tones are most likely to change color, appearing greenish-yellow over time. Yellowish-tans are also high on the list of fading pigments. For the least amount of fading over large areas, avoid bright colors and use shades with slightly muted tones.

The last time I went to purchase paint, I waited behind a woman who wanted the perfect shade of mauve for her daughter's room. The clerk behind the counter offered exceptional service as the woman nitpicked about her paint coloring. "Can you add a bit more red?" she asked. "How about a bit more blue?" Happily, the clerk mixed it. But again, she asked for a little more red and a little more blue. By the third time, the clerk was beginning to lose his patience. As he blended the final batch, the woman asked, "Now what should I do if I need another gallon?" The store clerk huffed, "I suggest you try the paint store down the road." (Thanks to Barry T.)

Gallons Galore How many gallons of paint will it take to paint your house? A typical gallon of paint covers approximately 400 square feet or a 20 ft by 20 ft area. Check the label on your paint as some thicker brands will cover less area. A typical 2,300 square foot home with an attached garage could have about 3,200 square feet of siding to paint. That's a whopping 16 gallons of paint for two coats. Now you just need to calculate how long it will take you to put on all that paint. •

He never looked for praises He was never one to boast He just went on quietly working For the ones he loved the most. His dreams were seldom spoken His wants were very few And most of the time his worries Went unspoken too. He was there…. A firm foundation Through all our storms of life A sturdy hand to hold on to In times of stress and strife. A true friend we could turn to When times were good or bad One of our greatest blessing The man that we called Dad. Forever lovingly remembered….. Myrna, Corey & family, Stacey. Until we meet again.

Mary Rozumniak In loving memory of our dear Mother & Baba who passed away on July 2, 2014. Sometimes when we first awake We think that you’re still here. Always remembered. Who passed away July 1, 2021 God saw you getting tired And a cure was not to be. So he put his arm around you And He whispered “Come to Me” With tearful eyes we watched you. We watched you fade away. Although we loved you dearly, We could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard-working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He chose to take the best. It’s lonesome here without you We miss you more each day. Life doesn’t seem the same Since you have gone away. When days are sad and lonely And everything goes wrong, We seem to hear you whisper “Cheer up and Carry on” Each time we see your picture You seem to smile and say, “Don’t cry, I’m in God’s hands, We’ll meet again someday!” Deeply missed and forever loved Wife Margaret, Raymond, Janet & Adrian

Saving The Ocean - CONTINUED from PAGE 4 solutions to plastic pollution will quantitatively address the global issue. Lots of restrictions, but no solutions. We are told that only eight percent of Canadian plastic waste is recycled. Alberta has some of the most talented petrochemical people on the planet. Why isn’t Canada putting up an X-Prize for recycling? New research from the University of Queensland has identified an enzyme in a worm that allows them to eat through polystyrene. Much like our contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, Canada’s estimated contribution to global aquatic plastic pollution is almost non-existent. A 2016 assessment pegged it around 0.03 per cent of the global total. Despite this, the federal government doesn’t hesitate to implement bans which will financially burden Canadians. I’m left wondering a number of things as well. Why is it that I can’t bring my groceries home in a plastic bag yet am told to put my recycled newspapers in a plastic bag? Two of the largest ocean pollution items are fishing gear and cigarette butts which have no new controls but I will soon have to drink out of a paper straw and bring my take-out soup home in a box. call it Career Technology Focus. We have gym every single day too. This school is good because as a parent all you really want for your kids is a school that has teachers that really care, a staff that cares about their kids, and we have all those qualities at this school.” He added that, “You don’t have to be Catholic to attend this school. I would say about 40 percent of our kids are not Catholic. We’re a Catholic school but we are a school for everybody. We are very inclusive and want to give everyone the best education as possible. Of course there is going to be a faith based to it. That is part of our mandate for sure.”

Former Village of Andrew Returning Officer and Former CAO Demand Apology Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Roseann Weleschuk believed residents in the Village of Andrew deserved to know the truth; that is why she appeared before council at its June 22 meeting. The truth she was alluding to was the fact that she served as the Returning Officer for last year’s municipal election, not former Chief Administrative Officer, (CAO) Pat Skoreyko, as previously stated by Interim CAO in an article that appeared in the June 15 edition of the Vegreville News Advertiser. Weleschuk also told members of council that she never assured Councillor Haight that there was no issue with his eligibility upon the full payment of the outstanding balance of taxes he owed. That statement also appeared in the June 15 edition of the Vegreville News Advertiser and the June 8 edition of the Lamont Leader. As stated in her presentation, “I, being the Returning Officer, never assured Councillor Haight of anything, since I never spoke to him. Furthermore, after the Municipal Election on October 18, 2021, I do not recall working in the office til into the New Year; therefore, in no way did I assure him of his eligibility upon full payment.” Weleschuk added, “I spent many hours and months training to be the Returning Officer in the last election, only to be humiliated by lies being told about the Returning Officer. All that had to be done if you weren’t sure about the identity of the Returning Officer was find the minutes of the regular council meeting for July 28, 2021, and in the minutes there is Resolution 2021070048 that states Councillor Lupul move to appoint Roseann Weleschuk as Returning Officer for the Municipal Election on October 18 or someone could have looked up the ad which was placed in last year’s Sept. 6 and Sept. 13 issues of Lamont Leader and Vegreville News Advertiser for nomination or looked in the filing cabinet in the office vault that has a file with all the nomination papers in it, and you would have seen that signature by the Returning Officer was mine.” Weleschuk and Skoreyko both requested a retraction and correction to the article in the Lamont Leader and the Vegreville News Advertiser. Skoreyko submitted a letter on June 20 and requested her letter be read aloud during the June 22 council meeting. The letter was not read aloud during the

meeting, and Skoreyko responded by stating, “I must question why my letter submitted on Monday, June 20th, 2022 was not read, addressed, or acknowledged at the June 22nd 2022 meeting as a formal document. Full transparency and accountability would dictate that my perspective on the issue should be heard. I included a request for retraction of a statement made Mr. Upham which still requires resolve. Instead it has been ignored and dismissed. Therefore I may have to explore other options.” Skoreyko pointed out in her letter that Upham’s official statement is incorrect. Not only is this official statement not correct, but it is also completely false, and it implies that I provided advice that I did not nor would I ever. In fact, I was the CAO at the time, and I was NOT the Returning Officer.” Skoreyko went on to state, “This is misinformation as well as maligning to my name as residents are well aware that I was the CAO at the time of the Election. The Municipal Government Act and Election Act governs processes and procedures. It was never my call to make. I have contacted Municipal Affairs when situations have warranted further information and guidance. Knowledgeable staff are more than willing to provide assistance. I suggest that if any further clarification on the matter is required, that Municipal Affairs be contacted.” A clarification on behalf of the Village of Andrew appears on Page 24 of this edition.

Welcome to St. Marys - CONTINUED from PAGE 19 dents and parents so that they have an opportunity to see the school, meet staff and get an opportunity to ask about programming. It was a pleasure to be in person this year, instead of being online and virtual in the past two years. The highlights from the event were seeing the new kids and getting to know the parents. It was a great opportunity to have our students engage with any potential newcomers so that they feel comfortable and make new friendships here when they come in the fall. We are so very proud of our students and our St. Mary’s family,” added Mr. Salsbury. There were many people gathered in the Common Area having supper with their families. Christina Resch was there with her two children,

Steven and Rayne. Christina said she graduated from St. Mary’s in 2004. “This school has a very positive atmosphere. It is full of wonderful people. The kids are great, they are very well mannered. I told my children all about my time here and my son Steven is going to be going into grade seven this coming year so it is a really exciting time for him,” Resch said. This open house also included art display/activity, food challenge, construction demo, information about Athletics Club and activities in the gym, Rock Climbing Challenge in the Fitness Lab, Science demonstrations which included the Gummy Bear experience and other science experiments along with a contest with prizes included.
