The cats curled up on the top of their cat tower, stuffed with scraps brought home to them. I had no sooner gotten to sleep when I was suddenly awakened by the cats diving under the covers and the sound of a strange noise. It was our area show promoter, laden with heavy chains. “What are you doing here?” I asked. “Are you dead?” “No, I’m not dead, but I am mighty grumpy; these chains are irritating my sciatica. A fat dealer from farther north who thought he was funny was sitting in the corner chair with a wreath on his head and a beer stein in his hand. “I’m here to show you the present!” he said, grabbing my arm and whisking me through the air. We visited mall after mall where the dealers all wore Santa hats and there were cookies laid out for the customers. I managed to grab a handful of cookies everywhere we went. peror’s Mausoleum, New Perspectives on Qin Culture, presented by JPMorgan Chase & Co., continues on view through January 20. During his brief life, emperor Qin Shihuangdi, supported by his brilliant chancellor Li Si, shaped a lasting China, -- economically, politically, and artistically. Beginning when he was known as “King Zheng,” ruler of a small kingdom in western China at age 13, he conquered six nearby kingdoms. Using horseback more akin to guerrilla warfare, he expanded eastward. Soon this Qin dynasty ruled most of what we now call China. He declared himself emperor “Qin Shihuangdi” in 221 BCE, remaining in power until his death in 210 BCE. Qin, pronounced chin, is thought the origin of the name China. Nevertheless, the Qin dynasty was conquered soon thereafter, replaced by the Western Han Dynasty in 206 BCE. To remain in control during the afterlife, Qin Shihuangdi ordered a tomb to be the cen-

Although similar coins had been long in use, the banliang’s value became uniform, independent of weight. Transactions moved faster, uniformity was promoted, counterfeits were reduced with the increased familiarity. Qin Shihuangdi’s coinage flowed through the empire. He gave coinage credibility; reciprocally, coinage gave his rule credibility. The banliang lasted until the early 20th century, longer than any other world currency. Consequently, even from the

It resembled a mountain, the mythological Chinese dwelling place for gods. With cosmological alignment, he would rule the heavens as well. Believing that the dead mingle with the living, Emperor Qin Shihuangdi had much to fear. He must be protected from vengeance by vast hoards that he killed during conquest. Protecting this fantasized world from about a mile away were remains of real humans, animals, and life-size earthenware replicas. During Qin Shihuangdi’s brief reign, art changed from em-

bellishing ritualistic objects to representing life with an on-line sense of realism. Dr. Liu Yang, exhibition curator and curator of Chinese art at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, writing in the September 2012 issue of Orientations, finds, “Without doubt, the First Emperor gave fresh momentum to the revolution in art.” Qin Shihuangdi’s legacy includes implementing uniform weights and measures, ruling through a bureaucracy with carefully defined roles, and attempting to codify laws. Careers were advanced through merit rather than by inherited position. Authority filtered downward from a single source. Under Qin Shihuangdi a uniform currency replaced moneys of salt, bronze round or tool-shaped coins, cowrie shells, woven silk, and bricks of dried

tealeaves. A bronze coin, banliang, round with a square hole in its center, was likely derived from a cer-
