It took Schaumann a year to hunt down a medal of the Angel Gabriel honoring him as the patron saint of communication.
Designer Gretchen Schaumann and customer Claudia Meldahl. While custom-designing jewelry, Schaumann sometimes finds herself forging friendships with her customers. This can be especially true when the jewelry reflects their shared faith. (Photos by Britt Aamodt)

heart stone necklaces and bracelets. The heart stones are stones shaped by nature into hearts. Schaumann is a born-again Christian, and before she goes on a stone hunting expedition she prepares. “I sit down and pray about it,” she said. And she never comes up empty handed. Her last hunt turned up 15 stones shaped by time, weather, and circumstance into the heart focal pieces of a series she calls “Gifts

Schaumann remembered when inspiration hit her. It was September, 16 years ago. She was a stay-at-home mom and wanted something nice to spruce up her outfits that wouldn’t cost a fortune. She experimented with found objects and vintage odds and ends repurposed as charms. She strung the pieces together and wore her creations to a church mom’s group. The moms liked the jewelry enough to order their own. Now Schaumann is to the point in her business where she can sell 120 pieces in one day at a show and still have 40 web orders waiting at home. from Above.” There’s a story behind that too. “My mom died of cancer,” she said, “and these stones represent the love and relationship we had.” Schaumann’s jewelry is a testament to the women in her family—her mother and her daughter (after whom Mimi-Toria’s is named). It is also a testament to the women who have come into her life because of her business--the customers who follow her blog and Facebook posts and flock to shows like JUNKMARKET Under Glass and Junk Bonanza and to the antiques stores carrying her wares to snap up their own Mimi-Toria’s treasures.

The yellow car necklace (page 3) inspired one of Schaumann’s online customers, Sherri Hardy of Montana, to realize, yes, she could order an out-of-the-ordinary necklace, and it could be themed around John Deere tractors and ranch life.

Mimi-Toria’s logo tag, shaped like a crown, is designed to make every woman feel like a queen. Carolina, the manakin, has become MimiToria’s mascot. She shows up at every junk show in her crown, angel wings and cancan skirt and sporting a piece of Mimi-Toria’s jewelry.
Valerie Piontek bought a flattened spoon necklace stamped with GYPSY, “because I feel a little like a gypsy sometimes,” says the Michigander. Schaumann had developed a whole line of spoon necklaces imprinted with different words and sayings, just waiting for the right customer to say, “That’s me.”
Cowgirls get their own Mimi-Toria’s design with mini gun and bullet casing. But look close: the metal disc that looks like a cow tag is actually a body bag tag from Ramsey County Medical Society.

lot of custom work. At the recent Junk Bonanza, Claudia Meldahl came by Schaumann’s booth to pick up a necklace that was months in the making. “It took me a year to find this medallion,” Schaumann said,
holding up a medallion embossed with the Saint of Communication. She turned it over. “On the back I’ve added a piece from a lady’s pocket watch, a crown because Claudia is a queen, the word believe because she’s a believer, and a butterfly.” A Montana woman asked Schaumann to
customize a necklace that would reflect her life on a ranch, including a tiny John Deere tractor. Often it can take months for Schaumann and her two junk pickers, Jennifer Banuelos and Sally Pronschinske, to find the right bangle to finish a piece. In November 2011, a customer asked Schaumann if she could design a silver spoon necklace with the words “Stallion for Jesus.” Sure she could. Would she like anything else on the necklace? “She’d had a dream about a stallion with a red eye,” said Schaumann, who immediately hit the road looking for a stallion with a red eye. And she found one at last in May of 2012. “The customer loved it. The stallion had a red garnet eye,” said Schaumann. There were a few other pieces left to locate before the necklace was finished, but the customer said

Old/new vintage stock plays a big role in Mimi-Toria’s designs. Vintage stock, like the bezel backing this layered jewelry element, qualifies as old/new stock because it was made years ago but then left in a warehouse. Schaumann also has a fondness for antique buttons, pieces from door handles, silk ties, and beads.

Jennifer Banuelos and Sally Pronschinske of Eau Claire, Wis., met Schaumann at the 2011 Junk Bonanza and hit it off immediately. Their passion for junk picking and Schaumann’s constant need for new items to wire and string together for Mimi-Toria’s Designs led to a quick business partnership. But the Wisconsinites are also fans of Schaumann’s jewelry and show off their flattened spoon necklaces and belt buckle wristbands.

This year she bought a Schaumann-created heart stone piece, which has added meaning, says Granaman, “Because she prays to find the heart-shaped stones.” Schaumann is creating a memory necklace for customer and picker Jennifer Banuelos. “The number four is for my four children,” Banuelos said, “There is a piece that says ‘love junk,’ my grandmother’s skate key from when she was little, my great grandmother’s cross, and some bling because I like bling.”

Just five years prior, the first U.S. radio station—Pittsburgh’s KDKA – took to the airwaves. Before then, those in search of “sweet strains from everywhere” had to rely on vaudeville. In 1925, even the movies had yet to find their
voice. The Golden Age of Radio changed all that. From the 1920s well into the 1950s, all sorts of entertainment (and information, too) could be summoned at the twist of a dial. The radio held pride-ofplace in every American home. No more traipsing to the theatre to take in the latest comedy or musical. No more relying on the local paper for all the news fit to print. Radio offered everything (and

A star is born--right under our back deck by Joan Sween We have a groundhog who lives under our back deck. The first time I met him, it was April, and he was running round and round in our back yard in a 10-foot circle just as fast as he could go. Fearing that we had a rabid animal, I called Animal Control. A nice young man in a brown uniform came out. “Nah, he’s not rabid,” the man said, “he’s in love.” He explained that during mating season, male groundhogs would often run crazily for hours at a time just for the joy of having a lady love. When The Man I Married came home, I showed him the besotted groundhog. “That,” I said, “is the sort of romantic exuberance women wish their men would show.” “Sweetheart, I would be happy to show you that sort of exuberance,” TMIM said, “but I just filled in the bare spots in the lawn with grass seed, and I don’t want to mash it down.” I named our furry tenant Minnesota Mike. I started telling friends
and customers how cute he was. I compared him to Punxsutawney Phil, noting that Phil was way out of shape and wouldn’t know his shadow if it walked up and bit him. It took a hearty Minnesota woodchuck to predict Minnesota weather I told everyone. Now, years later, it was a cold January, but I was out checking to see if I could see any
I showed him the besotted groundhog. “That,” I said, “is the sort of romantic exuberance women wish their men would show.” tracks indicating that Minnesota Mike had ended his hibernation. I knew it was early times, but I was eager to see him again. “Pssstt!” said a voice. “Pssstt! Over here!” A man peeked over our six-foot stockade fence, his
elbows hooked over the top. “Look what I got here,” he said, waving his hands. “Top of the line Minnesota Mike Groundhog Dishes.” He held a brightlycolored bowl in each hand. “Come February 2, I can set up inside the fence, and when you let people in to watch for Mike, I can sell a ton of these.” “How can you see over the fence?” I asked. “I’m standing on a rock,” he said. I heard another voice say, “That’s enough! You’ve had enough time on the rock.” The man suddenly disappeared with a yawp, and a lady’s head popped up. She waved some knitted caps at me. “Aren’t these great!” she said. “Look, I’ve put little round ears on them, and these ties go under your chin, and here’s a little knit tail to dangle on your neck. I want space in the Minnesota Mike Flea Market. People make tons of money on groundhog souvenirs in Punxsutawney, so why shouldn’t we?” Two mittens holding a bamboo fishing rod came into
view over the fence. There was a small bag hanging from the tip of the rod, which was slowly lowered in my direction. “Try some. They’re delicious,” said an unseen voice from somewhere near the mittens. I opened the bag. It had three macaroons in it. Each macaroon had a chocolate half and a white coconut half. “They’re Minnesota Mike Macaroons,” said the mitten voice. “One side for sunlight, the other for shadow. Perfect for a concession booth at the Minnesota Mike Flea Market. The crowd will need something to munch on while waiting for the groundhog to come out.”

Budding auctioneers take the floor
Goods seized by armies during the Civil War were sold at auction by division colonels. Honorary army colonels were auctioneers; hence it became tradition in the United States that those who completed auctioneering school could use the title “Colonel” to show their status. In this detail from a 1937 livestock auction calendar, the auctioneer dons the title, billing himself as Col. Wright. (Photos by Les Broich)

The school has drawn attendees from Brazil, China, Germany, Holland and Japan. Haas listed advantages any auction gives the seller: it sells items fast; attracts attention; freezes the market; creates an urgency to buy; and charges commissions to the buyer. There are several types of auctions that narrow the scope of what is being auctioned.

Continental Auctioneers School president Rich Haas explained auctioneers are required to have a license and a bond. The auctioneer’s license is issued by the county of residence upon payment of a $20 annual fee. Before making sales, an auctioneer must give a corporate surety bond to the county of not less than $1,000 nor more than $3,000, an amount set by the treasurer. A bond costs $50. An appraisal, Haas said, should be far better than a guess. Appraisals are opinions based on informed judgments supported by facts. Value is the monetary worth, at a point in time, that an informed buyer gives in exchange for an item of personal property with consideration of conditions in a given market. It is very important that an auctioneer understands values. “Knowing what an item is worth,” Haas said, “keeps you from starting too low and breaking brackets too soon.” Enthusiasm is also important. Haas asked, “How many times have you heard, ‘I got excited, caught up, and paid too much’?” Auctioneers should highly value a good ring person. Haas said, “A ring person’s responsibilities include eliciting bids from buyers who need encouragement and producing an atmosphere in which the buyers feel relaxed and comfortable.” When “yup” is heard, it is a ring person acknowledging someone has met the current bid requested by the auctioneer. The class also covers contracts and agreements, auction clerking, and cashiering. Haas said, “If you don’t quit, you can’t fail.”

Ralph Lichosyt was born and raised in Poland and now lives in Chicago. He entertained the class by doing drills in Polish. Lichosyt does a lot of buying for resale and decided to get into auctions. He does a high volume of business with eBay and Craig’s List and shops flea markets. He tries to turn $500 of purchases into $2,000 in sales. Lichosyt said, “There’s a huge Polish community in Chicago and a developing network for young Polish business people.” One of his best deals was a $500 investment that in three weeks brought in $8,000.

Olson said, “I hope to do some benefit auctions and may help with some toy auctions.” She would like to get a real estate license and get into real estate auctions. “The group encourages me a lot,” she said, “We’ve gotten to know each other and feel comfortable interacting.” Olson acknowledged the lack of women in auctioneering. “I’ve heard tapes of woman auctioneers,” Olson continued, “We have a different voice that can be nice to hear.” The National Auctioneers Association estimates that only seven percent of auctioneers nationwide are women.

There is currently no license required to be a personal property appraiser. The Uniform Standards of the Professional Appraisal Practice Guide Course were established by the Appraisal Foundation and sets professional standards to ensure appraisers are qualified and defines what appraisers must do to conduct and document all types of appraisals. Haas asserted attendees learn the standards accepted in the real world and by which an appraiser is judged, along with the appraisal requirements of government

Wood named auction.com the biggest online player in auction real estate. “Anytime you check their website, they have thousands of auctions running, and in 2011 they sold almost two billion dollars of real estate through their site.” Real Estate Auction Systems’ online auction application allows prospective buyers to view and to bid on a property. Wood debunked the idea that most internet real estate auctions involve distressed properties, saying a 10,000-square-foot house on 150 acres owned by Cheryl Crowe appeared on an online auction.
