Most cars come in rough shape. “We disassemble the car down to nothing, and we just build the car right over again from scratch. Automobile Repairing. “It was clocked at Indianapolis speedway at 73 miles an hour,” said Pellow. He thinks the wheel spokes may be white ash. Pellow “couldn’t believe it” when he once encountered the owner of the phaeton’s back end. Temperature Gauge. I like postcards, but most of the time I pick my own grabbed up items that had signs asking people not to. Eventually we came upon a postcard booth full of meticulously sorted and labeled boxes. “Postcards!” exclaimed Molly. “I just love postcards. I’m going to find some to send to my friends.” I began my own search. Yikes, the vendor was not shy about pricing. Many were marked $20. “Look at this,” said Molly. “Here’s a postcard of the hotel I stayed in when I was in Hawaii. My room was this one, right here.” She pointed at a

by Joan Sween My neighbor called last Saturday. She wondered if her niece, Molly, could go to the big antiques show and flea market with me. I had met Molly. She was a nice enough young woman, but words such as “flake,” “screw loose,” and “air head” also come to mind. “Um…,” I said, searching for an excuse. “Wonderful!” said my neighbor. “I’ll tell her you’ll pick her up.” It was hard to believe Molly was in her 20s. She put things back in the wrong place, opened cases without asking, and

The tip of her pen had left a little dot of ink on the card, and when she handed it to me, my thumb had landed right on that spot and smeared the ink. I tried to wipe it off. I only made the smear worse. The vendor was grimly watching me. I handed him the card and said, “I’ll take that.” After I convinced Molly to put her pen away, we browsed happily for a little while. “Well, why won’t

Wait!” I said. “Let’s see what you’ve got there.” She had approximately 50 cards from Hawaii and about the same number from Texas, and was trying to put them behind the tab that said “Michigan.” I separated the cards and put each batch where it belonged. We went back to looking at cards. Suddenly Molly said, “Ohmygosh!” I looked up to see she had dropped a handful of postcards. We both scrambled to pick them up. I handed the two dirty ones to the vendor and said, “I’ll take these.” “Okay, we’d better be moving along,” I said to Molly. “Add up your postcards and pay the vendor.” “How much are they?” she said. “I don’t see a sign.” “They’re priced on the back in pencil.” She gasped. “Some of these say $20! I thought they would be one or two dollars each! I don’t want them at that price!” I found where each one of her cards belonged and put it back while she browsed jewelry in the next booth. The vendor handed me a small sack with the damaged postcards.

Semi-retired plumber Rodney Hanson of Vergas, Minn., shows off what was once the latest in an affordable commode. The seat was made of wood, which, since it would not conduct the cold quite so definitely as the supporting iron framework, made for a fairly pleasant landing in an unheated room in the middle of the night. me.” All was well. Hanson stays in the shop and greets the public these days, while two of his three sons take primary responsibility for the business. His other son runs a plumbing business out of his home and has three sons who are also plumbers. By now it’s in the Hanson blood. When we dropped Hanson off, he insisted on sending me away with copies of columns he’s been writing for decades for the local newspaper. That’s when my cup of Hanson developed the fullbodied nuances a wine connoisseur would appreciate.

He can remember the gestures and habits of crotchety old coots, suave hometown heroes, and pretty neighbor girls. He can look at a tool or a mere part of a machine and see a soul or an era. Good talents to have if you’re a one-man historical society. Rodney Hanson, a plumber by trade, is the author of A Collection of Memories: From the Village of Vergas and More Memories: From the Village of Vergas. You can get copies online at the Frazee Forum. Linda Simpkins, editor of The Old Times, had a grandfather in the hardware business.

The Old Times *“Day Of the Week Dolls” (seven, naturally). *“Little Pets” (each little ceramic girl cuddled an even littler ceramic animal). *“Career Girls” (among them a teacher, a florist, a nurse—and a debutante!) *“Little Commandment Dolls” (Muriel’s twelve commandments were more on the order of a guide to graciousness. For example: “be loving and giving”). *“Little Internationals” (29 countries made the roll call). *“Flower Girls” (each figurine’s sun hat was a different flower). *“Belle Girls” (the skirt of each doll was— you guessed it—a bell).
