By Joan Sween Hooray, April! The start of the garage sale season! Come Saturday, we piled into the pickup, fully prepared--list of addresses in geographic order, cash in wads, clothing in layers, McDonald’s breakfast biscuit discount coupons, padding blankets and bungee cords. The first sale we stopped at had prices that were surprisingly low. The Man I Married and I began filling our arms with choices. I came up behind another woman. The aisles were narrow and so I looked at some things again, waiting for her to move on. She didn’t move on. I waited some more. She

She turned her head and looked at me out of the corner of her eyes and then went back to examining things. I could have sworn she gave me a nasty little smile. Humph! Well, enough of that, I’d just say,

and her face looked wind burned. She was tall, with broad shoulders, tight black jeans, heavy boots with chains across the instep, and a pea coat hanging open over a sweater with a neckline that plunged to about oneeighth of an inch above her… well, very low. I squeezed past her, rubbing our fundaments against each other rather embarrassingly. Just as I was about all the way past, she turned and shifted her feet, planting a boot right on top of my tennis shoe. I tried to jerk it out. No such luck. “Excuse me,” I said, “you’re stepping on my foot.” “Am I?” she said in a deep voice. She leaned forward to look down, shifting all her weight onto the

He leaned close. “What on earth is wrong with you,” he hissed. “I’m afraid of that lady,” I whispered. “I think she rides a hog.” “You’ll have to explain that when we’re back in the truck,” he said. Then he squeezed past me, and said, “Excuse me,” to the lady. She pulled herself in and gave him room to pass. Oh, well, maybe I was being silly about this whole thing. I said loudly and pleasantly, “Excuse me.” She gave me a long stare and then pulled herself in to give me about six inches in which to pass.

Eight Seasons in Sapmi

ANTIQUES

The Original Recyclables!

By Britt Aamodt MINNEAPOLIS – In far northern Scandinavia lies a tundra region hugging the Arctic circle. Traditionally, the area has been called Lapland. But the people who live there--and have lived there for 10,000 years--know it as Sapmi. The gakti costume is characterized by a dominant color, embellished by embroidery, tassels, and colored bands, which all have special meaning to the Sami. (Photos by Britt Aamodt unless otherwise noted.)

The American Swedish Institute’s exhibit, “Eight Seasons in Sapmi, the Land of the Sami People,” includes a dazzling collection of images by DanishAmerican photographer Birgitte Aarestrup. The photographer spent a number of seasons in Sapmi documenting their culture. But the ‘eight seasons’ of the show’s title refers instead to the Sami calendar, which breaks down the year into eight discrete parts. (Photo courtesy of Birgitte Aarestrup)

A fascination with nature continues to inspire a Sami descendant, Minneapolis-based artist and printmaker Kurt Seaberg, pictured with “The Luminous Hour,” one of his works on display at the Swedish Institute.

Through May 26, the American Swedish Institute is hosting “Eight Seasons in Sapmi, the Land of the Sami People.” Along with crafts from this

most northern of Scandinavia’s people, the exhibit displays three generations of artwork from the Minnesota-Sami family of Kurt Seaberg.

Seaberg is a Minneapolis-based print artist. And he’s also one of an estimated

The Old Times the Swedish Institute, he chose a tapestry stitched by his Sami grandmother. “She died when my dad was a boy, so I never knew her,” says the artist. But her artwork, of Sami on skis next to a reindeer, speaks to him. His grandmother immigrated to America in 1913. “She was trying to say something about the place she came from, about her past,” he says. “A lot of immigrants came here to forget their past. She was trying to remember hers.” When she immigrated, Sapmi was Seaberg never met his grandmother; she died long before he was born. But through her tapestry, which hangs in the Swedish Institute show, the grandson feels her reverence for the Sami culture she left behind when she immigrated to the United States in 1913.

of the primitive and the modern. Jane Howell’s whimsical illustrations achieve their impact through an economy of line and placement, bold dark brushstrokes against neutral backgrounds. They are quite deliberately childlike, with no attempt at photographic realism. The barest minimum of detail – the stripes of a tabby cat. . .the lasso of a young cowboy. . .the mop-like mane of a lion — defines an image. Even the rustic decorative flourishes of a folk-art technique such as rosemaling, are utilized with an up-todate sensibility. Howell dusts off the past, infusing it with an irresistible dose of timelessness. A 1949 Century House ad noted, “there are so many lovely things that it’s hard to choose between them all.” Fortunately, you don’t have to. So, keep your eyes peeled. In that capacity, Century House continues to thrive today, from its same historic Madison location. What explains the appeal of Century House ceramics? Well, there is of course that rarity factor. During its peak years, Ceramic Arts Studio turned out nearly 500,000 ceramic figurines annually and employed a staff of 50. The Century House roster never numbered more than five, including the owners. The result: a much tinier handcrafted production output, marketed primar- All photos courtesy of the Wisconsin Pottery ily to local clientele. But rarity alone Association. does not ensure longevity.
