Cufflinks can do more than look pretty on a wrist. The variety called doers give people something to do: provide entertainment (a dice game, a miniature roulette wheel) or extra functionality (a pill box, a thermometer, a tiny USB drive). (Photo courtesy of Bruce and Nancy Adomeit)

The four vices never looked so good. The theme must be a popular one in the cufflinks world, because the Adomeits have three pair of cufflinks picturing different versions of the Four Vices. (Photo courtesy of Bruce and Nancy Adomeit)

9 Cufflinks have been designed to commemorate United States presidents, military honors and, in this instance, the first manned ascent of a hot air balloon. The London Science Museum created this pair on the anniversary of the Montgolfier Brothers’ 1783 flight. (Photo courtesy of Bruce and Nancy Adomeit)

Fabergé cufflinks don’t normally show up in an everyday antiques store crawl. Bruce bought these at a Sotheby’s auction. (Photo courtesy of Bruce and Nancy Adomeit)

The cufflinks that launched a collection. Bruce Adomeit bought the 14-karat gold nugget cufflinks in Tucson, Ariz., on the occasion of his father’s funeral. His father had owned cufflinks. (Photo courtesy of Bruce and Nancy Adomeit)

Though French-cuff shirts aren’t as easy to find as they once were, Nancy says many designers, like Liz Claiborne (for women), still produce a line. She has found French-cuff shirts at dozens of stores, including TJ Maxx and Nordstrom’s. The Adomeits model coordinating pairs.

They have two pair of Fabergé cufflinks. Those are the spendy ones. Then there are the cufflinks shaped like sparkplugs and tree rings, or the novelty variety called doers. called “They’re doers because they do something,” says Nancy. have Cufflinks

She handed dealers. me a $50 bill. “The cash register is different now,” Paul said. “When you were here, you had to punch the Sale key, push the slider to Current, depress the Cash or Check button, hit the Security Release, and the drawer would open. With this new register you have to punch in a Dealer number, click I punched the Receipt button to some Yes or No, push the key for Time, record the buttons. I Maybe you could go punched some buttons. through it once more.” Nothing happened. I

tried a different sequence. Nothing happened. I grabbed my purse from under the counter and dug out $2.77. “There you go!” The lady gave me a slightly puzzled look, but left without saying anything. I tried the cash register again, reading all the buttons, trying to recall what Paul said. Nothing worked. A pile of money built up beside the cash register, but eventually I had a problem. A customer’s purchases totaled $31.56. She handed me two twenties. I looked in my purse. Yikes. All I had left was two pennies, three battered antihistamine tablets, a jelly bean, and a rabies tag from the vet. I had tens in my

growing pile beside the cash register. If her total had been $30 even, I could have made change. Suddenly an idea hit me. My high school math teacher told me I would someday be thankful I took algebra, and today was the day. Let’s see… if 31.56X equals Y, and if I assign a value of 30 to Y, then X would equal

30 divided by 31.56. This is where I always had trouble with math--dividing a number by a bigger number. To put it in simpler terms, if I had four apples and wanted to give an apple to five friends, wouldn’t I end up with one peeved apple-less friend? Anyway, I ended up with .95. “Congratulations,” I said to the lady. “You’re our twentieth customer of the day and you get a 5% discount, so your total sale is $30, and here’s your change.” I plopped down a ten. She left. I went back to trying to open the cash register. Finally I gave up and called Paul. He didn’t answer. I left a message. A customer who

looked like a failed contestant on “The Biggest Loser” came in. “Say,” he said, “why do you have all that cash sitting out beside the register?” I explained to him what the situation was. “You’d better duck that cash,” he said, “it’s an open invitation to a thief.” Shortly thereafter, Paul rushed in. He zipped behind the service counter and started pushing buttons on the cash register. Nothing worked.

I looked in my purse. Yikes. All I had left was two pennies, three battered antihistamine tablets, a jelly bean, and a rabies tag from the vet. “You’ve broken the cash register!” he said in a tone that was not nice at all. “We’ll have to call in a service technician!” Still not nice. “In the meantime, let’s get this money out of sight.” He started gathering up the pile of cash. I saw one more button on the cash register that I hadn’t tried. It was red. I pushed it. An ear-shattering siren shook the mall and set the porcelain to jiggling. Mr. Big Loser rushed up, spotted Paul behind the counter with a handful of cash, and tackled him. “Call 911,” he shouted. “I’ll hold him down till the police get here.” It’s difficult to fire someone who offers to help out of the goodness of her heart, but Paul somehow managed. © 2013 Joan Sween

Minnesota native reclaims Aitkin building Be Our Guest

Sylvia Allen

The newly restored Butler Building

The Butler Building in days of old.

by Sylvia Allen AITKIN, MINN.-There’s a saying that “everything old is new again.” That’s true of the historic Butler Building in Aitkin, Minn. The building, constructed in 1903 and enlarged in 1904, was open and operating (most recently as Butler’s Department Store) until 2011. That’s when I purchased it from

owner Chuck Butler with the intent of restoring it to its former glory and turning the three levels into a destination for retail, dining, and event space. I now live in New Jersey, was born and raised in Edina, and have family roots in the Aitkin area going back as early as 1914. After my grandmother (then a young girl) came back from a visit with friends

on Big Pine Lake and told her father how much she loved it, my great grandfather, Marion Clayton Wray, purchased 100 acres on the north side, where he and his family built a home. The home has remained in our family, and my mother, Dorothy Allen, still lives in Aicota. My family and I still visit the lake house on Big Pine Lake every

summer. Growing up, Aitkin and Butler’s Department Store were always a destination for me. I had been following the story about the Butler building in the Aitkin Age over the last several years and became distressed that a significant piece of Aitkin’s history was going to be turned into housing. I just love antiques and historical buildings and didn’t want to see such a storied structure destroyed. Luckily that didn’t happen, and I was able to talk to Mr. Butler about my ideas for the building. The plan for the building will be to restore it to its turn-ofthe-century glory in phases. Having restored my own 1740s home in New Jersey, I am well aware of the challenges involved. The first phase, which is under way, will renovate and lease the main floor, to be known as The Shopping Arcade. One lease has been signed so far, and the plan is to offer a diverse collection of shops, an Internet café, and corridor space for special marketing events like an indoor farmer’s market and craft fairs.

Our plan is to restore both the exterior and interior to the way it looked when Samuel Hodgeden had it constructed in 1903 and 1904. The building is in good condition for restoration, from its hardwood floors and oak panelling to its tongue-and-grooved pine ceilings. Recently uncovered were the original steel support columns, which are molded with decorative grooves and a floral design. They will be restored and lit to show off the designs. The second phase is the upper level, to be called the Opera House. This level will feature flexible event and entertainment space and a stage for performances and offer the community a historic venue for gatherings. The final phase of the opening will focus on the lower level, known as The Grotto. The 30-inchthick original rock

I am also working with the Aitkin County Historical Association and the Blandin Foundation. I hope that the Butler building will continue to anchor the downtown and be a destination for generations to come.
