The Old Times

Betsy-Tacy & Tib

Author Maud Hart Lovelace lived with her parents, older sister Kathleen, and younger sister Helen, at 333 Center Street from 1892 until 1906. Because Lovelace’s fictional counterpart, Betsy Ray, lived in this house in the first four Betsy-Tacy books, it is now known as Betsy’s House.

Be Our Guest Author Maud Hart Lovelace was born here at 214 Center Street in 1892. Later that year her family moved to 333 Center Street.

Betsy and Tacy turn 10 years old in Betsy and Tacy Go Over the Big Hill (book three). With Alphonso the Thirteenth being crowned King of Spain (1902), they squabble with older sisters Julia and Katie about whom to elect Queen of Summer. They resolve the problem by choosing a real princess from Little Syria. (Photos by Julie Holmquist unless otherwise noted)

Hill. Not much of a bookworm myself, I couldn’t understand why my older sister

loved the series. Only later did I appreciate and read more of the stories by Maud Hart

Lovelace. But even my sister’s fervor was outmatched at the 2012 Betsy-Tacy Convention in Mankato, Minn., where we encountered fans from as far away as Australia. Maud Hart Lovelace (1892-1980) wrote the fictional

Convention-goers viewed Carney’s sleeping porch, mentioned in Carney’s House Party.

Betsy-Tacy series based on her childhood in Mankato, or “Deep Valley,” at the turn of the 20th century. The trio of Betsy, Tacy, and Tib represented close friends Maud Hart, Frances “Bick” Kenney, and Marjorie “Midge” Gerlach. Many of the characters’ houses still stand, and we boarded a bus for a tour with

Betsy and Tacy loved the “chocolate-colored house” where their friend Tib lived. Her father was an architect like the father of Midge Gerlach, Tib’s prototype.

convention coordinator Barb Fecteau and local historian Bryce Stenzel. As we drove by places Lovelace had known, Fecteau mourned the loss of her high school and high school home, sites now hosting parking lots. We passed the cemetery where Lovelace is buried and wound around Betsy’s Big Hill to Little Syria below. A Syrian princess Betsy knew lived here. Fecteau pointed out one tiny house that might have survived from what was really called Tinkcomville. “It just looks like it could have been one. And I love it!” she added.

Lovelace incorporated a tower into her description of the “chocolate-colored house” above. It is believed that artist Lois Lenski used the round tower from this house as a model.

Back in Betsy’s neighborhood, we looped past classmate Winona Root’s house, Maud’s birthplace, and the Betsy-Tacy houses

The Carnegie Library was built in 1902. Now the Carnegie Arts Center, it houses a historical display in the former children’s wing. Every other Saturday, Betsy would visit the children’s wing of the Carnegie Library and read in front of this fireplace, over which hung a painting of the Isle of Delos.

(Helmus). “I’ve got pictures of them from the yearbook,” said Wilson. The last stop was the Carnegie Library, where Betsy went every other Saturday to improve her writing by reading classics. From there, everyone was free to tour the BetsyTacy houses on their own. Several girls had dressed up as Betsy, Tacy, and Tib (and Betsy’s older sister, The house of Eleanor Wood, who inspired character Dorothy Drew. Dorothy was an older girl that Betsy, Tacy, and Tib liked.

Carney Sibley’s house, where real life counterpart Marion Willard lived. The Sibley lawn was a favorite place for Betsy’s “Crowd” of high school friends to gather on September days. The Sibley automobile was also the Crowd’s chief means of transportation. The site of St. John’s Catholic church, which Tacy attended, is across the street. St. John’s Episcopal (Tib’s and later Julia and Betsy’s church) is across the street at the end of the block. The original building burned down in 1966.

This table from the Lovelace apartment is mentioned in Betsy’s Wedding. Betsy propped the back leaf against the wall and set books on the table as now displayed in the restored Hart Home.

Susan Brown, president of the BetsyTacy Society, showed us the collectibles stored in Tacy’s house and guided us through Betsy’s house. The Hart family lived there from 1892 to 1906, Maud’s freshman year of high school.

The Old Times

Tom Hart, Lovelace’s father, worked for a time at Blue Earth County Courthouse, across from the site of Maud’s high school. The courthouse, completed in 1889, still stands, but Lovelace’s high school has been razed. This 1887 banister from the Saulpaugh Hotel is displayed in the former Carnegie Library. The Saulpaugh equaled the Melborn Hotel, where Betsy and her friends began visiting Mrs. Poppy (Mrs. Saulpaugh) in Betsy and Tacy Go Downtown. Updated 10-14-07

The Old Times

I should have asked for a commission by Joan Sween I was at a 10-acre outdoor flea market. The hilly topography made walking tricky. The sun was hot and there was no place to sit down. I was panting and sweating in the blazing sun. Why, oh why, had I bought those five Fiesta plates at the second booth I came to? I should have remembered that Fiestaware doubles its weight every 50 yards. And there was no place to sit down. Then I saw a tree, and oh golly, it was making shade. I staggered toward the shade like a hippopotamus heading for a cool mud bank. Ahhhhhh. I

That was cheap! “This is a classic trumpet shape,” I said. “Which is very difficult to achieve and somewhat rare. And look at this sawtooth rim. There isn’t so much as a tiny nick or ding in these sharp points. No, I’m sorry, but I believe I’ve marked this too low. I’ll sell it to you for fortyfive, but if you walk away, I’m going to retag it at seventy-five. For the next hour I kept looking for the missing vendor as I acquired more and more cash. Suddenly a voice screeched. “What are you doing in my booth! What are you doing with my dog! Get out of my chair!” “I felt faint,” I said and explained the nochair problem. “I sold a few things,” I said and shoved $350 into her hands. “Why you sweet thing,” she said. “You can sit in my chair any time. You just stay right there, Honey. I’ll run and get you a cold drink.” © 2013 Joan Sween

I looked around for the vendor. No one in sight. I put my booth dog down and examined the iron dog. It had Phillips screws and was priced $20. “It’s a reproduction,” I said. “Oh,” he said, and turned to walk away. “Just a minute,” I said. “Why were you interested in the doorstop?” “I work for Mack Trucks,” he said. “I thought it would give people a laugh to see a bulldog holding my office door open “And you think they’ll laugh harder at a $250 antique bulldog than an identical $20 reproduction bulldog?” “You’ve got a point,” he said as he handed me $20.

The society had done extensive restoration, guided by Lois Lenski’s illustrations. “We relied on these drawings a tremendous amount,” said volunteer Bob Brown, explaining that most photos back then were taken in studios. He said at one point they had found a window frame beneath Winona Root’s house is kitty-corner from the site of Betsy, Tacy, and Tib’s the layers of the blank grade school. front porch wall, just as Lenski’s drawing attested. A few furnishings were original: Mr. Hart’s rocking chair and footstool, a corner cabinet that belonged to Maud and her husband, and a drop leaf table from their apartment. We saw more keepsakes in the Mankato library children’s room, including original Lenski illustrations and a small glass pitcher. Bick gave this pitcher to Maud for her fifth birthday, like Tacy did to Betsy. It symbolizes the beginning of the lifelong friendship at the heart of the Betsy-Tacy books. This rocking chair was given to Mr. Hart by the Thanks to the Knights of Pythias in 1901.

arbors and gazebos, and stood their ground amidst such unlikely accessories as airplanes, sailboats, “Good Luck” horseshoes, and oversize Cinderella slippers. Religious diversity was celebrated by toppers that came complete with their own rabbis, priests, or ministers. Ethnic diversity took a bit longer; early toppers were simply identical figurines with different skin tones. In the military? Grooms (and sometimes, brides), could be found attired in the appropriate uniforms. Occupational figurines included

England and the United States. The first readily available toppers, dating from the late 1800s, were handpainted, and fashioned of marzipan, (a sugarand-egg-based moldable almond paste), or the alsoedible gum paste. Soon, manufacturers realized that cake toppers needn’t necessarily be made of cake (or candy). They could be made of, well-wax, Plaster of Paris (aka “chalkware”), papier-mâché, crêpe paper, fabric, porcelain, ceramic, metal, bisque, celluloid, plastic, wood,

composition, saltware, glass, pipe cleaners, shells, and even peanuts! Many toppers were combos of different materials: a celluloid bride with a net veil or crêpe paper gown; a plaster groom, his tux a mix of fabric and paint. As the 20th century progressed, unique elements were incorporated. There were music box toppers and electrified toppers, which bathed the happy duo in twinkling lights. Wedding pairs struck their poses in cars, coaches, Fabergéstyled eggs, gondolas, and even hot air balloons. They found themselves framed in

A rarity in its time—the late 1950s—this topper features a Caucasian groom and a black bride. Special-ordered at a Virginia bakery, the topper was never picked up. Groom, 4½ in. h. $100-125.

Coast even provided “customized hair”: the bride came with a rubber wig, in a choice of color and cut. Among the numerous themed toppers: Barbie and Ken, Pez characters, Precious Moments, Kewpies, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and even Marge and Homer Simpson! Novelty toppers included brides attired

turned out toppers. A comprehensive cake-topper collection offers fascinating three-dimensional snapshots of times gone by. There’s added fun to be found in matching up toppers with actual wedding pix, since almost every wedding album included at least one

cutting-the-cake photo. Cake toppers are appreciated for their craftsmanship and diversity of style. Even more enjoyment, however, comes from imagining the uniquely personal histories of the couples who first cherished them. A wedding cake topper is a memento of a day like no other and a welcoming promise of countless happy days

ahead. All wedding cake toppers are from the Patty & Barney Deden Collection, courtesy of the Douglas County Historical Society, Omaha, Neb. Selected pieces from the collection (which numbers 1600 toppers) are on display at the Society’s General Crook House through October; a traveling museum exhibit is also available.
