Boy Scouting & Girl Scouting A century of memories

Girl Scouts visited many beautiful spots and participated in many outdoor and characterbuilding events commemorated in badges. (Photos by Britt Aamodt unless otherwise noted.)

It was traditional for Minnesota scout troops to pose for photos on the steps of the state capitol in St. Paul, Minn. The Drum and Bugle Corps from this 1963-64 photograph chose the North Star Museum as a site for their troop anniversary. (Photo courtesy of the Northstar Museum of Boy Scouting and Girl Scouting)

It’s hard to imagine a world without s’mores. But the tasty campfire treats didn’t make it into print until the 1927 printing of the Girl Scout handbook, Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts.

The museum’s copy of Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts once belonged to a troop in Tower, Minn. And just what are those girls silhouetted on the cover wearing, anyway? Shorts? Bloomers? A visit to the North Star Museum and Executive Director Claudia Nicholson might clear that up.

Believe it or not, this is a Girl Scout blouse from the 1960s and ’70s. The Girl Scouts tried to stay current with fashion trends by adding extra costume pieces like this shirt to the standard uniform. At first glance, the design might look floral but is actually the letter G and S repeated. Bill Blass, Halston, and Mainbocher, all internationally renowned mid-century fashion designers, designed uniform pieces for the Girl Scouts.

Scout uniform and see how it’s changed over the past hundred years. “It’s a history museum that uses scouting as a lens to look at the past,” says Nicholson. The North Star Museum collects scout stories and artifacts from the Upper Midwest. But it doesn’t shy away from telling the larger story, too. Robert BadenPowell, a veteran of the Second Boer War, started the Boy Scouts in 1908 to teach England’s boys about nature and the outdoors.

A Boy Scout troop from Mountain Lake, Minn., attended the first World Scout Jamboree after World War II in 1947 in Moisson, France, carrying Duluth packs blazoned with Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox.

The Brownie program started in 1926 to reach girls ages seven to nine. This group clad in uniform paired up to learn how to salute.

The Girl Scout uniform of the 1960s and 1970s featured a wool beret sporting the Girl Scout insignia, the initials GS mounted on a green clover leaf matching the green of the uniform.

Antiques Bel Air In 1926, the Girl Scouts of St. Paul rented Camp Lakamaga on Big Marine Lake for an outing. Four years later, they purchased the land, which lies 40 miles north of the Twin Cities near Forest Lake, Minn. It is still a destination for Girl Scouts of both Minnesota and Wisconsin for hiking, fishing, archery and camping. (Photo courtesy of the North Star Museum of Boy Scouting and Girl Scouting)

name the girls’ group the Girl Guides. “Because women guided society and men and were keepers of domesticity,” says

Nicholson. Then an American living abroad came into the picture. Her name was Juliette Gordon Low. Her husband had left her for another woman but died before the divorce was final.

Though he’d left everything to the mistress, Low fought the will in court and won. Financially secure now and single, Low sought to devote her life to meaningful

work, but to what? A meeting with BadenPowell provided the answer. She brought the Girl Guides to America in 1912.

In 1961, a Minnesota Boy Scout troop raced down the Mississippi River with these special Aquatennial paddles. Lifelong Boy Scout Byron Selgrede, though not part of the Aquatennial group, once enjoyed many camping and canoe trips with his Wisconsin troop and can appreciate the feel and look of the commemorative paddle.

In Low’s hands the program took on a new emphasis. “In the firs Girl Scout handbook, the admonition to the girls is choose a career, learn a skill or trade. Make sure you can take care of yourself if there is no one else to take care of you,” says Nicholson.

Low had learned from her own experience that women needed more than sewing and nature hikes to make it in the world. (The takecharge philosophy dropped away in the mid-20th century but was reinvigorated after the women’s movement of the 1970s.) The museum’s artifacts and

Bottling the taste of success

The Scouts hired illustrators to design memorable covers for the Boy Scouts of America handbook from 1911 until 1990. They liked this illustration so much, they used it again but changed the look a bit by flipping it horizontally and printing it in a different color.

7-Up look-a-like bottle collector Dick McChesney, featured in October 2010, contacted the Old Times to encourage collectors everywhere to keep hunting. In 1929 C.L. Grigg introduced the drink that was to become 7-Up as “Bib Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda.” “He wanted to capitalize on one of its ingredients, namely lithium, which was used as a mood stabilizer as well as a treatment for hangovers,” wrote McChesney. Among the few: “A drink called ‘Cheer Up’ on a bottle dated 1943 used the phrase ‘plus lithium’ on its label. ‘Ritz,’ another lemonlime drink on a 937 bottle said, ‘super

White gloves were an essential component of the Girl Scout uniform, especially for the older girls and troop leaders, in the middle of the 20th century.

Not until 1927 did the Brownies get their own uniform separate from the Girl Scouts. The uniform came with a floppy pixie cap modeled after the brownies from British mythology.

The uniform holds a special place in former scouts’ hearts. The mid-century Girl Scout’s fitted blazer and matching skirt came in a traditional green

out his Boy Scout bugle.” Successful as he’d become, Berger, like many, never forgot his scouting days. Freelance writer, author, and playwright Britt Aamodt’s Superheroes, Strip Artists, &Talking Animals was nominated for the 2010 Minnesota Book Award.

The Old Times

Maybe my co-pilot’s license needs renewing Dealer’s Choice

by Joan Sween Do people do garage sales the same way we do? The evening before, I sit down with a tablet and the newspaper and make a list of the garage sale ads. The next morning, The Man I Married takes the tablet list and a big map of the city, and starts numbering the addresses in a logical geographical route. The cat tries to help TMIM by spreading himself across the map. Finally, TMIM blows the cat hairs off the list, grabs his truck keys, and we’re good to go. “What’s our firs stop?” he asks. I give him an address on 58th Avenue, and he heads out. Immediately I am concerned. “Where are you going? You need to go NORTH of 55th to get to 58th!” “No,” he says. “Fifty-eighth is west of

You have to go south into the Camelot section, then west until you fin 58th, and then turn north.” “You’re not making sense AT all,” I stoutly maintain. “Fifty-eighth is north of 55th.” “Fifty-eighth Street is north of 55th,” he says through gritted teeth. “Fifty-eighth Avenue is still west of us.” “Oh, yeah, right,” I say. After we fin the sale (six sections of neat iron fencing purchased), we pop back in the truck. “Where to next?” TMIM asks. I give him another address. “Whoo,” he says, heading in the general direction. “Is that this side or the other side of Hwy 52?” “I think it’s the other side. You know, out by where Maryjane Pulaski lives.” “Kendall and Maryjane moved three

Leaving that sale (a six-foot carpeted cat tower purchased), TMIM asks, “Where to next?” I give him the next address. It’s close in to the center of town. We get there and TMIM drives down the street, then drives back up the street slowly, then drives slowly around the block. “Well, you wrote the address down wrong,” he says. “I did NOT!” “You must have. Did you bring the paper with you? Hang on, I’ll pull into this alley and we’ll check out the ad.” And there we were in front of the sale. “Huh.” TMIM says. “The ad must have said ‘in the alley,’ and you missed it.” “I did NOT!” As we finall drive away (laden with some old map prints suitable for decoupaging), TMIM asks, “Where to next?” “Next is 2025 Northern Heights Drive.” He zips along, humming. “Where are you

By Joan Sween years ago,” he says. “All right,” I say with forced patience. “Out where the Pulaskis USED TO LIVE.” “Are you sure it isn’t that gray townhouse area just east of the sound wall?” he asks. “The highway doesn’t run true north right there, you know.” “I KNOW which way the highway runs! “All right, all right,” he says. We drive out to the Pulaski’s street. Then we drive back across the highway to the gray townhouse area east of the sound wall. “Oh, yeah, right,” I say. “The highway kinda veers a little just about here.”
