The Old Times
Later in life, Quintal dabbled with creating her own comic book, which she called “Stratosphere John.” She never finished it. But the pages she left behind prove that even decades later, the Golden Age cartoonist still could deliver the goods. Typical of the 1940s, a woman might be the victim in this and 99 percent of the other illustrations McHattie found in her mother’s suitcase, but, far from typically, a woman was also the illustrator of them all.
Paul Bunyan Antiques Trails
Comics collectors may recognize the title “Heroes All” and even have received them as a student at a Catholic school in the 1940s. But what many collectors don’t know is that these comics were commissioned by Catholic Publishing Company, headquartered out of Minneapolis and that a Vee Quintal, a woman, was their star cartoonist.

The memoir recounts the life and artistic legend of Pearson, who drew under the shortened name Vee Quintal. Nearly as astonishing as a woman
Quintal’s career as an illustrator blossomed in the 1940s about the same time as Superman’s. The comic hero she later invented, Strasphere John, 08-11-08demonflies in pursuit of a purse-snatching villian, strating superhuman qualities rivaling his wellknown predecessor’s.

The Old Times
When buying antiques, don’t lose your head by Joan Sween I ran into Judy, a former neighbor of ours, in a grocery produce department--she was holding a cantaloupe to her ear and thumping it. She was delighted to see me, and thumped me on the back energetically. I wondered if I sounded ripe. Judy had just moved to a new home and wanted to furnish it with antiques but confessed she knew nothing about “old stuff.” She added, “I’m
just sick and tired of my sister-in-law being so superior about how old her things are. She even has a chair that once belonged to Marie Antoinette!” I tried to weasel out of it, but Judy was persistent, and finally I agreed to accompany her to the next big antique show and flea market in our area so I could give her advice on “old stuff that will take my sister-in-law down a peg or two.” The time came and we went to the show. I

I told her that was very unlikely. “No, it’s not,” she said, rushing ahead. “There’s one of those Marie Antoinette chairs right there!” She was pointing at a pretty little carved Duncan Phyfestyle side chair. “My sister-in-law’s chair is just like that,” she said, “only the covering on the seat is blue.” I leaned into her

The Old Times brought to life the adventures of a young St. Francis. In another she showed an as-yet unrepentant St. Olaf sacking London. Occasionally, the young cartoonist cast her favorite movie stars in roles. She put Fred MacMurray’s face on the King of France. She drew hunky Robert Taylor as St. Lazarus, who appears to El Cid in a vision. “In the same issue, you see the Cid asleep. He’s got a loincloth on. He’s beautiful and brawny,” says McHattie and wonders: “How much of that passed by Father Benz’s editorial staff?” In her day, Quintal was the highest-paid Twin Cities cartoonist. Depression. Her father lost his job. So a teenaged Quintal hired on at the North Minneapolis Ben Franklin to help out her family. As a child, she had honed her artistic talent by copying the faces of her favorite movie stars. She put that talent to use at Ben Franklin creating in-store ads. It was a customer who led her to Catholic Publications. Quintal’s instinct for swashbuckling heroes and handsome leading men came to the fore when her publisher premiered a new title, “Heroes All,” in 1943. McHattie has several copies in her collection. In one of them, her mother
