by Britt Aamodt DULUTH, MINN. – Duluth, Minnesota’s Lake Superior Railroad Museum doesn’t simply document rails and trains. It tells the story of a country. “There was America before the railroad, America with the railroad, and

America after the railroad,” says Ken Buehler, executive director of the museum and general manager of the North Shore Scenic Railroad. The breadth and rugged scope of the United States virtually guaranteed its history would be tied to the

means of its traversing. With the addition of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the nation swelled and would continue expanding with the addition of the Southwest Territory, Texas, and California. James J. (Jim) Hill, President of the Great Northern Railway, became known

Subtle hints went right over Bruno’s head. He would just smile and say, “I think it looks nice there.” Time marched on. I was working with a new dealer named Freida one day in May when I noticed something was different about the front area. I looked around, trying to figure out what was not as usual. Finally, I worked it out. “Where’s the green wagon wheel?” I asked Freida. “I sold it a while ago, when you were in the back with another customer,” said Freida. “You sold the wagon wheel!” I gasped. “It had a price tag

I was just surprised because the wheel has been there so long.” “Well, I think the “May Flowers” table looks a lot better without that old wheel,” she said. Later on, around lunch time, two ladies parked out front and walked into the mall.

be thinking of the one up the road.” They went back out the door, climbed into their car, and drove away. “What was that all about?” said Freida. “Beats me,” I said. Later that afternoon I was writing up a sales slip for a customer who was buying a pile of tea towels, when a bus pulled up out front and many women got out. The first woman in our door stopped and looked around in a puzzled fashion. She turned to the lady behind her and said,

“Oh, no, this is the wrong mall,” she said. “I must be thinking of the one up the road.” “That darn driver brought us to the wrong mall. Let’s get back on and tell him again that we want the mall with the big green wagon wheel.” The bus was pulling out before I could shut my dropped jaw and un-bug my eyes. I went running after it, waving tea towels trying to catch the driver’s eye, but he got away. At an emergency dealers’ meeting the next day, we all chipped in some money. Within a few days, our mall manager bought a big wagon wheel at a shop across the river in Wisconsin and a can of green paint at a local Menards. The wheel leans against the display table, marked “Not For Sale.” When customers remark that it doesn’t quite go with the table’s theme, we all just smile and say, “We think it looks nice there.” © 2013 Joan Sween

Told the No. 1 would be scrapped, Hill replied, “No, you’re not. You’re going to restore it.” It was, but years passed, and once again the Crooks was shuffled off to a dead line, a rail leading to a scrapyard. This time, Hill’s son Louis salvaged the aging beauty and had her restored for his father’s 70th birthday. Now she occupies pride of place in the museum’s exhibition space. The collection comprises seven steam, 14 diesel and two electric locomotives, plus over 40 pieces of rolling stock: coach, dining, sleeper,

mining equipment, ore cars, and a rotary snowplow flesh out the collection. The Immigrants Waiting Room, an original feature of the depot, has been interpreted through an exhibit on four local

rest,” says Buehler, adding that it had a secondary purpose as well, “to keep the immigrants away from the general population.” Immigrants from over 40 nations passed through Duluth en route to jobs on the Iron Range or other parts of the country. When the exhibit opened, the Patronas family, one whose stories are recounted in the display, held an informal reunion at the museum. Buehler found an elder stationed in front of the exhibit

who had come to pray for his first-generation family members. Another time, the executive director found a note on his desk. It was a message from a visitor who had toured the museum with her grandmother. An exhibit had evoked a family anecdote, never told before, about a grandfather who had worked for the railroad post office It’s moments like those that bring the museum’s collection alive, says Buehler. “Nothing happens until someone stands in front of an exhibit and tells their own story.”

The Lakeside Craft Shops “Art in the Home”

Fred Albert Dennett (1849-1920) was the founder and President of The Lakeside Craft Shops from 1910 to 1919. Dennett was born in Greenville, Maine, but he moved with his parents to Pigeon River in Sheboygan County, Wis., in 1851.

This label (decal) for The Lakeside Craft Shops showing a woodworker at his bench was affixed to the company’s furniture, usually on the bottom or the back of the piece. The company’s trademark included the apt motto, “Art in the Home.” This small table bearing the familiar label (decal) of The Lakeside Craft Shops is pictured in the company’s 1912 catalogue as jardinière stand No. H-10. This example is made of quarter sawn white oak, though it was also offered in solid mahogany. The design of this piece seems to borrow several design elements from table No. 251 of the Charles P. Limbert Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

When Dennett first announced his new company would make “novelties in oak and mahogany,” he planned to call the company The Woodcraft Guild, and some furniture was produced that bore this name (see decal above from a jardinière stand). However, Dennett soon changed the name of the new company to The Lakeside Craft Shops. 302 Oak St • Farmington, MN

by Peter A. The Lakeside Craft Shops was a company founded by Fred Albert Dennett in 1910 when Dennett was 61 years old. Dennett had already made his mark in business as the founder of the very successful Wisconsin Chair Company (18881954) in Port

The original factory building of The Lakeside Craft Shops still stands at the northeast corner of South 13th Street and Kentucky Avenue in Sheboygan. The factory was built south of the downtown in 1910-11 in what was then called the Factory District, but the neighborhood is now light industrial and residential.

This unusual Lakeside piece turned up at the 13th Annual Twin Cities Arts and Crafts Show in September 2012. Featuring quarter sawn oak with the original cane panels, the piece probably was intended to hold magazines, but it could also be used to display artwork. Curiously, it is not pictured in the Lakeside Craft Shops 1912 catalogue, suggesting that it was first issued in 1914 or later.

This is Lakeside’s jardinière stand No. H71 in mahogany featured in the company’s 1912 catalogue on page 55. The Lakeside Craft Shops offered thirty-six different styles of jardinière stands, many of them including a brass insert.

It was not long before Dennett realized that he could sell more phonographs if more records were available for consumers to buy, so later in 1917 he established a new company, the New York Recording Laboratories, Inc., to produce records. Perhaps recognizing this, The Lakeside Craft Shops thereafter began to specialize in one product line in particular, the cedar chest, a furniture form that appealed to many homemakers at the time. By 1915, Dennett began to focus his attention on the commercial potential of a new technology that was sweeping the country, the phonograph. One of Dennett’s other companies had been supplying phonograph cabinets to Thomas Edison for years, but after Edison’s factory complex in West Orange, N.J., was destroyed by fire in December 1915, Edison bought Dennett’s cabinet company outright. However, Dennett remained in the phonograph business. In 1917 he put The

one matchbook. Some are for matchbook lots, ranging from several with a similar theme to massive collections. Just recently, a seller offered--as a single lot-over two thousand matchbooks. Actually, as any serious collector (aka, a phillumenist) will tell you, the term “matchbook collecting” is a misnomer. A matchbook implies that the item in question is filled with matches. And, once upon a time, it was. But today’s collectors carry a torch for matchcovers: those now-emptied paperboard fold-overs
