by Sid Korpi I never thought: “Someday, I want to be June Cleaver.” I find it impossible to keep an immaculate house or have dinner awaiting my husband, but you might see some similarities between Barbara Billingsly, the actress who portrayed Leave It to Beaver’s quintessential ’50s homemaker, and me— at least in our costuming. I LOVE the look of women’s clothing from the ’50s and ’60s and have become a vintageclothing-store/ebay junkie, amassing closets full of retro wear. I watch “Mad Men” and “Perry Mason” reruns to drool over the outfits and have made a quasi-

Becky “Brody” Dalton of Duluth, a pinup fashion model, says, “In the 1950s, the United States was in its heyday. Everything was made beautifully. Clothing from that era is so detail-oriented and made with such care. The fabrics and the prints are absolutely gorgeous. Designs back then were so flattering, made for women of all shapes and sizes. Wearing clothing from that era just makes you feel beautiful.”

Clark Gable gave Bonnie Kane, Kailyn Brooks, and me the eye at the “House of Ghosts” premiere at the Heights Theatre. Beer collector show on tap --PRESS RELEASE MAPLEWOOD, MINN.--Hundreds of breweriana enthusiasts will gather at the Aldrich Arena in Maplewood, Minn., on Saturday, October 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the annual Guzzle and Twirl Show and Sale sponsored by the North Star Chapter of the Beer Can Collectors of America. This beer-lover’s show and sale is one of the largest in the Midwest, drawing some 150 dealers from across the country.

They will bring a vast assortment of beer collectibles ranging from pre-1900 beer bottles, mugs, glasses, and signs to newer neon lights. Trays, openers, kegs, cases, coasters, and corkscrews new and old will be offered for sale as well. If it was produced by or for an American brewery, especially the past and present breweries of the Midwest, there is a good chance it will be found at Guzzle and Twirl. There will be no beer for sale at the

event. Chairman Dave Wendl says, “Guzzle and Twirl is a great opportunity for collectors to enjoy a huge amount of breweriana. Be it a pre-Prohibition beer tray or a glowing neon light for behind the bar, collectors are likely to find that special beer collectible at Guzzle and Twirl.” The Aldrich Arena is located at 1850 White Bear Avenue in Maplewood. Admission, $5. Call 651-731-9573 for more information.

See the guy in the striped shirt? That’s him.” Finally a break came in the steady flow of traffic “I’ve got to hit the rest room now or have an accident,” I said to TMIM, turning to rush up the aisle… and bumping smack into Larry. “Not now! I said, and took off. Come the end of the show, we were thrilled with how successful it had been for us. As we packed up, we were obliged to move around Larry to get things in the right tubs. “You can’t say I didn’t give it a chance,” he said, “but this show was not a money-maker for me. I don’t think I’ll be back.” TMIM and I said at the same time, “Gee, Larry, that’s too bad.” © 2013 Joan Sween

1913, Betty was just nine when her father’s car plunged through thin ice on Madison’s Lake Monona, and the family moved in with relatives. Although art had always been Betty’s passion, there were no funds to indulge that interest. But the urge to create remained: “I kept a scrapbook in which I placed any and all pictures, poems, and ideas that I found

My scrapbook is a pretty battered-looking thing, but it is full of ideas. “I wanted most of all to take an art course, and in ninth grade I got into one. Hundreds of Red Wing families, even today, can recount stories of their relatives working in the town’s clay industry, and many will point with pride to a piece of stoneware or A tree stump planter created for the grave site of an individual whose initials pottery that has been in were applied to the piece. What did the initials stand for? Maybe this article the family for will reach a descendant who knows.

generations. Some such pieces were made as part of the general product line of one of the factories. Other pieces, sometimes known as “lunch hour” pieces because workers made them in their free time, were unique creations. They were made specifically for personal use or as gifts for family and friends. Of all the crocks, jugs, pitchers, and plates made for personal use and toted home by the potters of Red Wing, those made in remembrance of a family member hold the greatest importance. Remarkably, some of these pieces have been on display in Red Wing for decades. They are found in the city’s cemeteries.

This Oakwood Cemetery stoneware gravestone was created for infant Francis Meritt Olson. “Born May 17, 1899; Died June 9, 1899.” It is full of Victorian gravestone symbols, including oak leaves (strength of faith, eternity), and grapes (sacrifice, blood of Christ, immortality). Evidence suggests this marker was not created at the sewer pipe factory. The decorations and glaze were more likely found at one of the potteries. Portions were also done in marble.

Oakwood Cemetery, located in the heart of the city and high on a bluff, holds over a dozen gravestones and/or flowerpots made especially to mark the site of a family member’s grave. Nearly all were made using the forms and glaze used at the Red Wing Sewer Pipe Company. But while various sewer pipe molds were used for the foundations of these grave markers, each marker was further fashioned into a unique and lasting work of art by its maker. Some of the pieces were never marked with a name; these were meant to simply hold plants or flowers at a gravesite. Others, clearly meant to mark the grave of a family member, bear the name, birth date, and date of death of the individual interred there. Many were children. Grothe, Johanna collections and exhibits manager at the Goodhue County Historical Society in Red Wing, conducts tours of the historic cemetery. During the

tour she talks about “the history of the cemetery itself, Victorian era mourning

practices, gravestone symbolism, and family histories of some of the plots we look at.” Grothe also shared “Oakwood Cemetery was established in 1854. 35 acres of land were deeded to the city

of Red Wing in 1857 at the cost of $3.50 per acre. It was platted around 1863-1864. The Betcher Memorial Chapel and the Blodgett Memorial Gateway were designed by wellknown architect

evidence on the Oakwood Cemetery stoneware markers. The foundation of each of these hand-crafted memorial sculptures is a pre-formed piece of sewer pipe. Careful examination reveals that the artists often added a layer of clay to the exterior of the basic form and then carved it to appear like tree bark. Individual appliqués in shapes such as grape clusters, oak leaves, vines, and flowers were then attached. All carried symbolic meaning. Tour groups learn that Victorians were big on gravestone

Tree-stump style grave marker for Mrs. Samuel Haner. The anchor symbolized hope and life eternal, the tree stump a life cut short.

Wanting to preserve the figurine by having it fired,Betty remembered a nondescript building she passed on her way to work. The sign over the door read “Ceramic Arts Studio.” She stopped by the next day. Open since late 1940, CAS had been specializing, none too successfully, in the hand-crafted manufacture of pots, vases, and bowls. A potter brusquely informed Betty that the Studio didn’t take on outside projects. Fortunately, at just that moment, coowner Reuben Sand entered. He saw the figurine, and was
