Remembering JFK

JFK had surprised Lyndon Johnson by grabbing the Democratic nomination for President, leaving Johnson unhappy at the prospect of vacating his position as Senate majority leader for the largely powerless position of vice president. The two did not pose with happy smiles for this button; graphic artists pasted a headshot of Johnson behind Kennedy’s. The button urges voters to empower the President and the party by voting for the entire Democratic ticket with one pull on a voting booth lever. (Photos by Britt Aamodt)

This November marks the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Among the many buttons Paul Bengston has celebrating JFK’s career, this memorial button produced shortly after the president’s death rounds out his story and perfectly commemorates this year’s anniversary.

Kennedy visited Minnesota in October 1962. After a bean feed in St. Paul (ticket above), JFK was expected at an event in St. Cloud but never arrived. Disgruntled attendees wanted to be reimbursed for the dollar spent on their “I Saw President Kennedy” buttons (left). They could easily cash them in now.

Minnesota DFLer Arthur Naftalin presented himself with charismatic presidential candidate John F. Kennedy and popular Senator Hubert H. Humphrey to campaign for his first term as Minneapolis mayor. Naftalin went on to serve two terms in that office. 365 E 7th StREEt St Paul, MN 55181 WED-Sat: 11aM tO 6PM SuNDaY: 12PM tO 6PM

Bengston’s collection emphasizes JFK’s connection to Minnesota. This button pictures the presidential candidate above the names of three Democratic incumbents seeking re-election in Minnesota. Hubert Humphrey had been a Senator since 1949; Orville Freeman had been governor since 1955, and John Blatnik had been a Congressman representing Minnesota’s 8th District in the northeastern part of the state since 1947. Freeman was the only one of the four not to win.

The platform pass would have let someone stand on the platform where then-Senator Kennedy was scheduled to speak.

White House. Paul Bengston was only two when Kennedy died. “But I’ve seen it replayed on TV so many times I feel like I was there,” he says. In many ways, he inhabits that era more than most. He’s a history buff and a devoted collector of political memorabilia. His collection is broad-based, including items from the general categories of American presidents and Minnesota governors, as well as items reflecting bygone political and social movements (suffragettes, Prohibition, the Red Scare). But there are certain personalities and times that attract a memorabilia collector like Bengston more

In his early forties, Kennedy was himself still a young man when he courted the youth vote during his run for president in 1960.

November 2013

A campaign brochure (left & above) outlines JFK’s support of the growing civil rights movement. With the broad base of the Democratic party in mind, he is pictured with Congressman Chester Bowles of Connecticut, chairman of the platform committee, championing “the strongest civil rights plank in history.” The cover of this brochure showing JFK with leaders of the black community more directly targets a black audience. Inside are listed the seven rights Kennedy pledged to fight for in front of an NAACP rally in Los Angeles: “The right of every American to work as he wants to work . . . to be educated . . . to receive just compensation for his labor, his crops, his goods . . . to live in a decent home in a neighborhood of his choice . . . to obtain security in sickness as well as health . . . to think, to vote, to speak, to read, to worship as he pleases . . . to be free from the terrors of war.”

Press buttons are rare items because very few of them were ever made, and they were typically created for a one-time event.

But as Bengston heard the story, it was while in Minnesota that JFK received word of photos showing Soviet missiles in Cuba. “Kennedy hightailed it back to Washington,” says Kennedy & Johnson

Cont. from page 8

DFL delegate from Minnesota in the 1960s. He also has a number of items surrounding a JFK nonappearance in St. Cloud. Oct. 6, 1962, JFK was in the Twin Cities for a so-called DFL bean feed at the state fairgrounds. Press passes were printed. Tickets for the feed were distributed. There was a program brochure announcing scheduled speakers. (Bengston has copies of all of these.) “Afterwards, he was supposed to go up to St. Cloud,” relates Bengston. “It was a rainy day. Hubert Humphrey was there,

JFK

appeared together in a variety of styles in red, white, and blue.

JFK

In 1956, JFK made an unsuccessful bid for vice president “at a time when vice presidents still had to run for office,” said Bengston.

In 1957 JFK won a Pulitzer Prize for a collection of short biographies of U.S. Senators entitled Profiles in Courage. Although not recounted in the book, it was well known that during World War II, JFK swam great distances, risking his life to save the surviving members of PT-109, a patrol torpedo boat under his command that was sunk in the Pacific. The button evokes both his literary accomplishments and personal courage.

Bengston. It took a while for the news to reach St. Cloud. “There were people who’d paid one dollar for a pin that said, ‘I saw President Kennedy in St. Cloud.’ Some of them went back to the pin seller and wanted their money back.” Bengston says JFK memorabilia will always be collectible. “There’s this mystique,” he explains. “America went from stodgy Ike to this tan, youthful president. There were children in the White House. It makes you wonder how different our history would’ve been if he hadn’t been assassinated.” JFK routinely sent letters to state delegates about important issues to solicit their support for his position on them. Bengston has a sampling of such letters in his collection from Ruthmary Penick, former Minnesota delegate.

Miss Amy Jo’s artwork often hints at her Norwegian-American heritage. She makes the quintessential symbol of ranch life, a steer head, integral to the Fargo Film Festival with Norwegian rosemaling in the back-ground. She sneaks a rosemaled flower (on the box) and a Norse ship in the poster for the “Jubileum” exhibit.

discovered I loved the craft of screenprinting.” Screenprinting is one of the oldest printing techniques. It goes back 2,000 years to the Song Dynasty in China. According to historians, the Chinese wove human hairs into a screen and used the screen to print images. The Japanese adopted the technique but made their screens out of silk, thus the name silk screenprinting or serigraphy. (Sericum is Latin for silk and graph is Greek for writing.) Before the 20th century, screenprinting was predominantly a commercial printing process in Europe and America. But gradually

Every year, Miss Amy Jo does a cowgirl art print not for a commission or a client but for herself. When she was a little girl, she used to imagine growing up to be a cowgirl. But Miss Amy Jo adds glitz and glamor to her cowgirls, dressing them up and adding glitter to the paint so that the images literally sparkle.

In 2011, Bicycling Magazine named Minneapolis the number one cycling city in America, beating out perennial number one Portland. The cowgirl series grew out of a girlhood fascination with these decorative women in their fringed leather, cowboy hats and boots. “I did my first cowgirl for a birthday art show. I created a series of ballerinas, roller girls, and cowgirls, things that as I kid I thought I would grow up to be,” she says. Miss Amy Jo’s cowgirls aren’t Dale Evans or Barbara Stanwyck in her “Big Valley” days. There’s usually an element of whimsy traced into the traditional image. One of her cowgirls has a rose stuck in the rifle barrel, like a Vietnam

The Old Times

Maybe next year we’ll do pilgrims by Joan Sween November already! Time to change the front table display in the mall. Our very newest dealer said, “What shall we have for a theme?” After we all stared at her in astonishment for several minutes, she hazarded a guess. “Uh… turkeys?” We collected turkey planters, turkey platters, turkey candy bowls, turkey salt and pepper shakers, turkey candles, turkey candle holders, turkey tureens, turkey figurines, turkey flower vases, and wind-up turkeys. We surveyed our work. Nice… but it lacked something. We needed one big element to use as a centerpiece.

Our very newest dealer said, “How about a cooked turkey?” We all stared at her in astonishment, and then murmured, “Of course!” One giant golden crispy roasted turkey. It would make a fantastic centerpiece. It would have to be a papier-mâché turkey because it was going to sit there for a month. Who did we know who could mold and paint a realistic roast turkey? Fred! Fred and his wife Suzi had been in the mall for several years and both had a lot of artistic talent. But Suzi was evil. We would ask Fred. “Oh gosh, I can’t right now,” said Fred, holding up his hands in a hopeless gesture. “I

don’t have the time. Suzi is divorcing me, and it’s keeping me busy every minute of the day.” “Come on, Fred,” we wheedled. “Divorces are just a matter of signing papers and waiting.” “Uh-uh,” said Fred,

“we’re working on the never-ending Property Settlement.” “Is Suzi trying to take everything?” we asked. “No, it’s worse than that,” moaned Fred. “She’s being viciously fair.” “Uhhhh,” we said, “that’s a problem?” “You have no idea,” said Fred. “Take our collection of 200 salt and pepper shakers. Suzi’s dividing them 50-50. I get all the peppers, she gets all the salts. And she’s dividing our 12-setting sterling flatware.” “You each get six place settings?” “No,” he said with a sigh. “She gets all the spoons, I get all the forks.” were We flabbergasted. “And she gets

November 1, Fred walked in with a giant golden crispy papiermâché roasted turkey! It was an exact turkey shape and a beautiful centerpiece for our display table. Fred brushed off our compliments. “Don’t thank me,” he said, “Suzi did it. I can’t understand it. She’s still madder than hops because I won’t agree to cutting the dining room carpet in half, but she offered to do the turkey for me.” That was strange. Were we wrong about Suzi being totally evil? For the first week of November we all basked in the beauty of our turkey table with its splendid centerpiece. Then on the 8th, a customer in a pink pants suit and orange hair said, “What’s that strange smell?” We didn’t smell anything other than the scented candles in booth #15. On the 10th, we all could smell something funny. We checked the rest room. We looked around for forgotten lunch sacks. We poked under all the display cases, looking for dead mice. We found nothing. On the 15th, the smell was horrible! We called Public Works. Our last guess was that the sewer had backed up. The Public Works guy came into the mall, stopped suddenly, and said, “Phew, why does that turkey stink?” He walked over and pulled the turkey apart. An odor you wouldn’t believe rolled out. “Well, there’s a real raw turkey inside here!” he said. “Pretty rotten now.
