The Old Times

Gone but not forgotten By James Neagbour Christmas. The season of light, food, friends and family, and goodwill. It is also the season of memories – memories of our lives. From early childhood our annual Christmas celebrations mark our years. We fondly remember opening those beautifully wrapped presents on Christmas morning. We remember all the

happiness and joy the season brought. For 100 years Dayton’s department store in Minneapolis helped millions of families celebrate a happy holiday season. Dayton’s entered the lives of Minnesotans early in 1902. Right from the start they had an effect on the retail scene of Minneapolis. Fine merchandise and great costumer service,

all in beautiful surroundings, insured their trademark of quality shopping. From early on, Dayton’s made the Christmas season special by using holiday gift boxes for their customers’ gift purchases. The designs used on the gift boxes were so varied over

A beautiful poinsettia design was printed on metallic gold paper for this Art-Deco-designed Christmas gift box in 1935.

In 1997 the 8th floor auditorium Christmas display was “The Nutcracker,” and Dayton’s shopping bag featured artwork by Maurice Sendak. the Dayton’s Christmas display windows were never of a religious theme. When questioned on this during the 1950s, the store’s general manager, Donald C. Dayton stated: “We believe that there is a distinction between the religious side and the festive side of Christmas. On one side there are the Christ Child, the manager, and church bells. On 08-11-08

the other side there are Santa Claus, Christmas trees, and sleigh bells. We believe that the religious side should not be commercialized. We believe that church and home are better places for religious symbols than a business establishment.” Inside the store was the magical Santa Arcade where generations of children gazed in wonder and truly believed. There were train rides and merry-go-round rides and even live pony rides. Santa was also there to take our gift

I understand Mrs. Claus likes children. Good for her. by Joan Sween For December, we decided to have Santa in the mall for kiddies to visit. Great idea, but none of our male dealers would agree to play Santa. They all laid their ears back, dug in their hooves, and said, “No way, Ho-say!” Well, okay, fine!

We’d have Mrs. Claus instead. No doubt she would be less frightening to the littlest ones than some fat guy with fake whiskers and a vocabulary limited to “Ho, ho, ho.” We drew straws for who would be Mrs. Claus, and yours truly got the short one.

Come the first Saturday, I put on a bright red dress, a white pinafore apron, and high-button shoes. I combed my hair into a little bun, sprayed it silver, and donned a pair of rimless spectacles. The other dealers found a rocking chair, and a little side table.

We even laid in a supply of cookie dough. Shortly thereafter, a lady with a little girl arrived. The on-duty dealers quickly shoved some dough into the microwave. When the lady and the little girl walked in, the shop was redolent with the smell of baking cookies. hello, “Well,

famously. I chattered on about my fat, hairy husband and his band of alien toymakers; she kept up a running series of nods. The microwave dinged and the on-duty dealers put a plate with two warm cookies on my side table. “Want a cookie?” I asked my lap passenger. She nodded. I started to hand her one, when there was a sudden shriek, and the cookie was slapped out of my hand onto the floor. “Carolyn is NOT allowed to have sugar!” the mother snarled as she snatched up her child and stormed out the door.

I started to hand her one, when there was a sudden shriek, and the cookie was slapped out of my hand onto the floor. Oh, well. You can’t win them all. Things would get better. I retrieved the cookie, brushed it off, and ate it. I ate the other cookie on the plate. Our next young person was a boy about nine. “I smell cookies!” he said, as he came through the door. “And you shall have one,” I warbled, “just as soon as they’re out of the mic-er… oven. Meanwhile, would you like to tell Mrs. Claus what you’d like for Christmas?” “You’re not Mrs. Claus,” he said.

“Why yes, I am,” I said. “If you’re Mrs. Claus, what’s Santa’s real name?” “Nyquil,” I snapped. Just then the plate with two cookies arrived. He made a dive for them, but I got my hands on one. “One cookie is enough!” I shouted. “You don’t want too much sugar!” Shortly thereafter, a little seven-year-old girl wearing a velvet dress and a superior simper walked in. “You’re not really Mrs. Claus,” she said. “Of course I am,” I said. “Mrs. Claus is grayhaired. You’re wearing silver hair spray,” she said. “Okay, kiddo,” I said, leaning close to her and whispering. “I’m really gray, but I want to keep Santa thinking I’m still a babe, so I dye my hair. But when December comes, I have to look

Dad took care of the outside work, braving the elements to Wire angel trio with wooden heads. Tallest figure 15 in. h., $30-40/set. string colored lights along the eavestroughs. Mom’s domain was indoors, and there were plenty of homemaking magazines eager to help her dazzle with “the best Christmas ever.” But who knew there could be so many variations on a theme?
