The Old Times

“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” By Joan Sween I pulled up and parked beside the antiques mall, ready for work. I paused a minute to smell the cold, clean air. I could tell that we would have snow before the end of the day. Most Minnesotans can do that--- smell snow coming. I am surprised that I can. Being Polish, I can smell goulash from half a mile away, but snowsmelling is a recent accomplishment. There were two other cars parked in the lot---my work partner’s and one I didn’t recognize. I opened the door and WHAM! I was hit with an olfactory tsunami that slapped me back against the door. The

Not that I have ever been in a bordello, French or otherwise, but that’s what leaped to mind. I staggered to the service counter with my coat sleeve over my nose. “What?” I gasped to my work partner, Bev. “What?” “Ee ah eu eelr,” she said. Then I noticed that she had a dresser scarf tied across her nose. I raised my eyebrows in puzzlement. She stiffened her spine and pulled off the dresser scarf. “We have a new dealer,” she gasped. “And the mall smells like an Albanian chicken coop!” Bev gestured

toward a lady who was just coming around a corner. “This is Sallie.” I was obliged to put my coat sleeve down and bare my nose in order to greet her. Instantly I felt smothered in odors that I was having difficulty identifying. Maybe the overall effect was more like Siberian skunk farm. “I’m pleased to meet you,” I said. “What is that horri--um… What is it that you sell?” “Mostly art glass, but with a special sideline of scented candles!” Sallie gushed. “I make my own. There’s big money to be had in scented candles, especially those with new designer fragrances.” “Designer fragrances?” I asked. “Yes!” said Sallie. “People don’t want the traditional roses and lilies any more. They want odors that are nostalgic, that recall significant moments in their lives. Wait here, I’ll be right back.” She disappeared down an aisle toward her booth and returned a few minutes later, carrying an armload of candles.

“Sniff this,” she said, extending a candle toward us, “and tell me what comes to mind.” Bev and I sniffed. It smelled to me like the angleworms that crawl up on the driveway when the lawn gets too waterlogged, but I couldn’t say that.

We hadn’t a clue. “Warm Kittens!” she shrieked. “Isn’t that just the sweetest thing ever?” “Sweet,” we said. “But that’s not all,” chirped Sallie. “I even make a series that will appeal specially to men. Smell this one.” I took a sniff. in a Crockpot,” “Sniff this,” “Roast I crowed. she said, “Yes!” said Sallie, another extending a extending candle. “And here’s candle ‘Wet Boots on the Back the Stove,’ and ‘Ripe toward us, of Fishing Creel,’ and “and tell me ‘Haaawk Ptooie!’ Isn’t a clever name? laughing so hard I knocked over the telephone. “Just ‘Dust!’” “What great ideas!” said Sallie, heading for her booth. “I’ve got to write these down!” “Us and our big mouth,” said Bev. We sighed deeply, and reached for dresser scarves to tie across our noses. © 2014 Joan Sween

Orphan returns to tell his story

A chair similar to this belonged to nearly every State Schooler. When using them, children had to sit in total silence with their feet flat on the floor, knees together, and arms folded. “The Chair” could be used as a punishment, as a dressing chair for the girls, or as a place to wait before the children left the cottage in a group. (Photos by Julie Holmquist unless otherwise noted)

by Julie Holmquist From 1886 to 1945, the small town of Owatonna, Minn., housed what became the third largest orphanage in the nation. Over time, 10,365 children lived on its practically selfsufficient 300 acre campus. But until about 20 years ago, most people in Owatonna had forgotten the orphanage existed.

Orphan’s story Cont. on page 5

The main building housed the dining room, chapel, offices, and staff living quarters. The small boys’ cottage, where Ronglien lived for one year, was in the south wing. The orphanage museum began in the turret and now fills the building’s main hall. Athletics were an important activity for State Schoolers, who had their own gym with a swimming pool on the lower level. These are still in use today as part of the Owatonna Tennis & Fitness Center.

The Old Times

In 1938, students and staff of the State School gathered in front of the main administration building for a group photo. Boys and girls never played out on the front lawn except for their special Fourth of July celebration. On that day, each child was given a Cheerio—an ice cream bar on a stick. others, had negative experiences with matrons. Circumstances changed in Cottage C-3 with new matron Julia A. Keefe. In his memoir, A Boy from C-11, Ronglien recalls, “By sheer decency, she

conquered the hearts of supposedly unmanageable boys.” Keefe was like a mother to Ronglien and kept in touch through old age. State Schoolers were heavily involved in athletics, including

winning a national Golden Gloves trophy every year. Ronglien made it to the finals, though not the championships.

Orphan’s story Cont. on page 6/8

As a kid, Ronglien would sometimes peek through the keyhole of the assistant matron’s door. Once, she caught him on his knee peeping through the door, but she never said anything.

Miss Morgan, matron of C-11 from the time it opened (1923) to 1945, was Ronglien’s matron for the eight years he lived in C-11 and did not make a favorable impression.

Orphan’s story Cont. from page 4

Former State-Schooler Harvey Ronglien has made sure they remember. At age five, Ronglien and his sixyear-old brother, Oscar, entered the State School for Dependent and Neglected Children. With their mother dying of tuberculosis and their alcoholic father in prison, Harvey and Oscar were the only

two of eight siblings who had not found a home. It was the Great Depression, and the orphanage ran at peak capacity: 500 kids, from babies to age 18. Ronglien lived 11 years in several of the 16 “cottages,” homes for 25 to 35 children at a time. They attended school together, marched to meals in the main dining room, played on separate cottage playgrounds, and did chores. Most infamous was scrubbing the dining room floor after every meal. Each cottage was run by a live-in matron and assistants. Unfortunately, Ronglien, like many

Orphan’s story

Cont. from page 10

Ronglien watched the new school being built in 1933, when he lived in the small boys’ cottage. He attended this school from grade one through grade eight and later attended Owatonna High School.

Bedrooms at the State School were only used for sleeping. The largest bedroom in C-11 would have held 12 beds. Ronglien said a Faribault company made these beds as replicas of the originals. Boys in C-11 never used their pillows. Instead, they placed them on the floor while sleeping, so they would look fresh if visitors came.

visual stations tell the story of the orphanage. Outside, six audio stations guide visitors across the campus. Ronglien frequently leads tours himself. Thousands of visitors come from across the country and Ronglien feels rewarded when he can help children and grandchildren of State Schoolers understand more about their parents’ habits—why they went to bed early; why they ate everything on their plate—it was the way they grew up. Despite the demanding schedule, Ronglien wants to get the story out. “Our thing is—we did live; we were people. . . . It should be known that all these kids went through that State School.” Ronglien is wellsuited to the task, because, as he said, “I’m the guy that lived the story.” Julie Holmquist is a photojournalist, researcher, and piano teacher who enjoys learning history.

Ronglien lived in C-6, the little boy’s cottage, for one year until he turned six. This cottage was on the south wing of the main building.

Golden Gloves trophy and original State School punching bag and boxing trunks. The Golden Gloves boxing program was big at the State School and an important part of Ronglien’s life. The trunks belonged to Ronglien’s friend, Marv Tenhoff, who later graduated from St. Olaf College and became a school superintendent in Dodge Center, Minn.
