The Old Times
Let’s cancel February and go straight to March by Joan Sween February is a big disappointment. It’s the month wherein we keep hoping for that change in the weather that smells faintly as though spring is coming. But it never does. Maybe in March there’ll come a whiff of spring, but not February. All February smells like is the exhaust from the snow blower. Even worse, there are idiots running around chirping, “What are you guys going to do on Valentine’s Day?” Seriously? I’m going to do the laundry and The Man I Married is going to empty the cat box. Apparently, the thing to do on Valentine’s Day is to get all gussied up, go
out to a restaurant that adds $4.95 to your check if you had a cup of after dinner coffee, order steak, champagne and tiramisu, gaze fondly into each other’s eyes and exchange Valentine presents. TMIM and I climb into our pajamas, make two bowls of popcorn, hunker down into our recliners, gaze fondly at a re-run of “The Wizard of Oz,” and pass a box of cherry cordials back and forth. This is very romantic-our recliners match and we’ve put extra butter on the popcorn. Other people, however, consider Valentine’s Day a giftgiving occasion. When did that happen? The world is getting goofy about gifts. Next thing you know, we’ll be

What can possibly be more wonderful than giving gifts that say, “I Love You.” Just this morning, for example, the shop had been open for only half an hour and I had time to eat only three heart-shaped frosted cookies set out for the

customers, when a lady walked in. She referred to a Post-It note in her hand. “I’m looking,” she said, “for a Heddon Magnum Torpedo fishing lure. I’m told you have one here.” Whoa! I almost choked on my cookie. Yes, we had one. And after a courtesy discount, it came to $910.00. “You must collect lures,” I said while I wrote up the sales ticket and my work partner gingerly wrapped the hooks. “No,” she said, “but my sweetie does, and I want to give him a Valentine’s present that will knock his socks off. I had to sell my entire Precious Moments collection to be able to afford this lure, but it’s going to be worth it to see the look on his face.” The shop stayed

busy for most of the day, but no other individual sales broke three figures. We had to keep replenishing the cookie plate, though. They were very tasty. Toward the end of the day, a man came in. Squinting at his iPod, he said, “Do you have an Enesco Precious Moments ‘We Would See Jesus’ figure? I’m told it’s about ten inches tall.” “We do,” I said. “You know that one is very rare?” “I know,” he said, “it’s going to cost a bundle, but hey, a person doesn’t want to be stingy on Valentine’s Day.”’ I brought the figure up to the service counter. “These are numbered, yeah? he said. “I should be sure I’m getting number 0965/1500.” I showed him where to look for the number. “That comes to $1,200.00,” I said, writing the sales slip. He whistled in amazement. “I had to sell my entire fishing lure collection to have enough money, but it’s going to be worth it when I see the look on her face,” he said as he left. My work partner and I sagged onto our stools, teary-eyed and too moved to even eat cookies. As O. Henry first showed us in 1905, the gift that says “I Love You,” is the best gift in the world. © 2014 Joan Sween

A Minnesota gem Louis Sullivan’s “Jewel Box” bank
Three exterior views. Commissioned by the owner of the National Farmers’ Bank, Architect Louis Sullivan’s “Jewel Box” was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976. It can be difficult to decide where to look first, there are so many fine features to behold inside the bank. The leaded glass windows contribute to Sullivan’s “color symphony” by their different colored panes and the changing tones of light they cast throughout the day. The arched ensemble of stained glass panels on the left faces south, the one above, west; below, a glimpse of how the arches complement a rectangular skylight.
Louis J. Millet, who designed the bank’s stained glass leaded windows for Sullivan, founded the Chicago School of Architecture, a collaboration between the Art Institute of Chicago, where Millet taught decorative design, and the Armour Institute of Technology.
It is believed these American Glass windows created by Louis Millet were taken from the northeast corner of the lobby during the 1948 remodeling. They are now installed sideways in the hallway of the rear office building.

George Elmslie (18691952), born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, emigrated to Chicago in 1884. He served as Louis Sullivan’s chief draftsman and ornamental designer for 20 years. Elmslie left Sullivan in 1909, joining William Gray Purcell in Minneapolis.

function: the appearance of a building should fit the purpose for which it was built. He loved nature, and his style foreshadowed the Prairie School of architecture made famous by Frank Lloyd Wright (a Sullivan mentee). Sullivan also held that form did and should reflect the culture of its surroundings. He was appalled with the frequent borrowing of architectural styles, like the prevalent Roman and Greek-style banks of that day. In Kindergarten Chats, one of his lengthy
writings, Sullivan demands that a banker in such structures should “wear a toga, sandals, and conduct his business in the venerated Latin tongue --oral and written.” Fortunately, Sullivan found a sympathetic client in Carl K. Bennett, vice president of Owatonna’s National Farmers’ Bank. Bennett wanted to build a distinctive and special bank, an artistic structure that would promote his bank’s position in a community where much of the wealth came from dairy farm-

Oskar Gross painted this pastoral mural based on scenes from a local farm that had the first registered dairy herd in Minnesota.
