by Mary Jo Koplos The imminent arrival of a granddaughter spurred Marge Basnett’s interest in doll collecting and her subsequent interest in doll repair, although the dolls of her childhood are a far cry from the Monster High dolls her now-6-yearold granddaughter, Danika, loves. Basnett is the founder of the Minnesota Doll Doctors Association (DDA), which recently was named an official state chapter of the national Doll Doctors Association (also DDA). The members of the local group, now going on its second complete year, includes professional doll doctors as well as collectors and hobbyists. Tammy Schmitz describes how to apply eyelashes.

Part of Tammy Schmitz’s personal doll collection. The boy soldier doll in the back was manufactured in the early 1900s by the French company Société Française de Fabrication de Bébés et Jouets--also known simply as SFBJ. Schmitz took the doll to the veterinary office where she worked to X-ray him and see he had any internal damage. She purchased the little French doll in the front from a customer. It has custom-made snowshoes.

Heights, has a strong interest in doll conservation and an impressive personal collection, including a number of her favorite pre-1930s antique bisque dolls that, she says, melt her heart. According to Schmitz, “this group is very open to sharing knowledge so that we can all preserve our dolls or those belonging to others. We work hard to respect each other’s experience, too. They are a great group

and although many of us have just met, friendships are developing quickly.” That sentiment is shared by fellow doll doctor Demi Gilbertson of Demi’s Doll Studio & Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minn., who loves that “there are other doctors out their ready and willing to help in an emergency and offer new, innovative solutions to old problems, i.e., repainting, hair rooting, new glues & polymers, etc. I have learned that there are other doll doctors who are willing

to share ideas, tricks of the trade, and share their expertise in doll repair. Very refreshing.” Basnett is quick to point out that membership is not restricted to professionals and as a matter of fact, with the exception of one other professional member-Julie Tollison of Making Amends Doll Hospital in Red Wing, Minn.--everyone is there simply to learn how to repair and

Basnett, who in 2007 created an online Yahoo group called Baby Boomer Babies as a way for vintage doll collectors to share their passion and knowledge, was encouraged by one of that group’s members (who is now the president of the national organization) to form a Minnesota chapter.

Minnesota DDA’s first organizing meeting was held in July 2012, and the first chapter meeting was in January, 2013. In 2014, the Minnesota Doll Doctors Association met on January 12 to learn the art of facial painting and touch up. The Old Times

March is a good month for flying kites---but not tarps by Joan Sween It was a beautiful March day, perfect for dragging out last year’s tarps and scrubbing them off so they’d be ready for this year’s outdoor season. I started with a brown 10 by 15 tarp, laying it out in a clear spot on our deck. I went back inside for a bucket of sudsy water and a long-handled scrubbing brush. When I came back, the tarp was gone! Good heavens! Who would steal a used tarp? And how had they gotten into the back yard that fast? I looked around in puzzlement, and then saw the tarp. March winds had picked it up and blown it into our neighbor’s yard, plastering it against the supports of their second-story deck. Retrieving it might be a little tricky as the neighbors had a very tall fence around their property--the kind with points at the top of each

upright board. I picked a spot to climb over where there was a tree on our side of the fence and a tree on their side. I climbed our tree, stepped over the fence and stretched a foot for their tree. I couldn’t move. Something was holding me. I finally figured out that I had caught the seat of my jeans on the sharp points of their fence.

I wiggled. I tugged. I went through more contortions than a Jane Fonda exercise tape. Nothing helped. I was snagged good and tight. I wiggled. I tugged. thought. It was a weekday afternoon. There was no traffic on our street. All our neighbors worked except the old guy across the street and he napped all afternoon. I had no choice. I would have to step out of my jeans. I kicked my shoes off and slid my legs out of my jeans. Now I could reach the other tree and climb down to get the tarp. White cotton briefs printed with pink teddy bears were a little chilly for March, but I would be back home in a jiffy. I dived under the neighbor’s deck and started gathering up the tarp. Just then the neighbors came out on their deck. Eeek! They were supposed to be at work. “It’s a perfect day for scrubbing off the deck,” she said. “While you do that, I’ll clean the grill,” he said. Yikes, I thought, and pulled the tarp over my head. Just as sudsy

water started coming down through the cracks, a raccoon dived under with me. I had to get out of there. Er… we had to get out of there. Moving quietly, dragging the tarp that covered me, I sneaked out the other side of their deck. The raccoon must have thought it was a good idea, because he came along. The fence on the other side of their property had a gate. I slipped the bolt lock, felt my way to their front yard, turned and headed in a direction that I thought would get me to my front yard. A male voice shouted, “Should I hit it with the tranquilizer dart now?” “Good heavens, who’s out there?” I said to the raccoon. He shrugged. “Doesn’t sound like
