The Old Times

Women get behind sale & causes by Britt Aamodt MINNEAPOLIS – Spring 1907: Teddy Roosevelt occupied the White House. Cars jostled with horsedrawn wagons on city streets. And in Minneapolis, 25 women convened at the public library to establish a new club devoted to civic and charitable works. The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis has been around longer than the Model T and its 1928 clubhouse overlooking Loring Park is a recognized historic landmark. Over a hundred years later its membership is still actively involved in the betterment of women and children through The point with a good champagne flute is to make it tall enough so the bubbly doesn’t bubble over. But for Diane Henry, coordinator of the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis’s Annual Estate Sale, the flutes and the other donated items are a means of funding the club’s charitable causes.

The Woman’s Club’s location overlooking Loring Park on the edge of downtown guarantees them a lot of foot traffic for the one-day sale. Browsers 7 Rush sale “gift store,” which sell smaller can also check out the dollar table and City items. (Photos by Britt Aamodt)

The estate sale doesn’t limit itself to collectibles and antiques. Carolyn Golberg found a barely-used Italian cooking set, painted enamel over steel, for her cabin up north.

But never say never. They once sold a Federal chest of drawers. And there were other finds that were more trunkful than armful -- a Victorian baby carriage

and a heavy French wall clock. “You see a lot vintage jewelry and handbags. They just fly out the door,” Henry said. “We usually have an assortment of nice

linens, china, crystal and pottery.” The Woman’s Club sale is, in essence, a combined estate sale.

Nope. The “Max Factor Girls,” as they came to be known, each received annual compensation in the heady amount of--one dollar. That’s right. One dollar. Major himself, and all his newly-discovered stars, including a vocal quartet, the Hoboken Four. Wait a minute --who’s that in the spotlight? Why, it’s the group’s lead crooner: skinny, smiling, and soon-to-be-famous Frank Sinatra! In the words of Woodbury Powder, that definitely qualifies as “a bit of stardust magic. . . a flawless, film-star ‘finish.’” Donald-Brian Johnson is the co-author of numerous Schiffer books on design and collectibles, including Postwar Pop, a collection of his columns. Long-running HarMar show closes --PRESS RELEASE ROSEVILLE, MINN.— After a run of over 30 years, Minnesota’s last mall show has been shut down. Nina Wolbank, owner of Juno Promotions, the most recent producer of the HarMar Mall Antique Show & Sale said that the owners of the mall gave her notice that they were cancelling all future shows after the March 1 & 2 show closed. Juno Promotions had shows

scheduled for April, July, and October 2014. All three are cancelled. Wolbank noted that all dealers who had placed deposits would have their checks mailed back. “It’s very sad” she said. “The ones hurt most will be the dealers who depend on this kind of show. This was the last mall show in Minnesota.” According to Wolbank the HarMar Mall show was started in the early to mid-1970’s by Mike Liptak of St. Paul, MN. He later went on to start and run antiques shows at the Roseville mall, Bandana Square, and

Signal Hills mall, but the HarMar Mall show was the first, the longest running, and his favorite. Liptak sold the show to two women who ran it for several years before Juno Promotions purchased it from them in 2010. Juno has run the show for the past 13 years. When asked what she will do now, Wolbank said that she was going to take some time off and rest up before deciding how to proceed. She noted, “This is not the end of Juno Promotions! We’ll be back to do another show somewhere, somehow!”

early history, travels along the Silk Road and maritime routes interchanged Indian and European influences. Greco-Roman, Mughal, and Hindu mythologies share many similar stories: humans transformed into animals, and infants prophesied to kill the king. Similarly, Greco-Indian statuary was influenced by both sources. Beginning early in the 16th century, Mughal Emperors Babur and Akbar reformed local institutions. As Islamic rulers, they integrated local Shaivite, Vaishnavite, and other forms of worship into their visual culture. The Mughal dynasty’s admiration of Persian culture spread throughout northern India. Political and cultural harmony ensued. Cont. on page 21

A plump caterpillar crawls on barky limb, near thorns, serrated leaves, and butterflies. A life-infused scene presents past, present, and future at once: cocoon/caterpillar/ moth, buds/new fruit/ ripe fruit, leaves fresh or recently nibbled; and features textures: buds/ moths/feathers/thorns,

serrated leaves, bark. The caterpillarbutterfly cycle also stretches time. An 18th century Anglo-Indian Chippendale lady’s rosewood writing desk awaits Lady Impey. Delicate yet energetic, the desk also beckons Charulata, the aspiring writer within the film, onward toward her mission. Upon the desk, floral motifs of inlaid ivory swirl around one another, swinging along a vine and repeated upon the delicate silver
