Bitten by sharks & trilobites
This petrified sperm whale tooth weighs two pounds and is over eight inches in length. It was recovered at a South Carolina site near the teeth of its number-one predator, the Megalodon. (Photos by Britt Aamodt)
By Britt Aamodt BECKER, MINN. – Troy Bondhus grew up in Monticello with lots of siblings and lots of hobbies. He loved Star Wars. He loved words. And when his dad returned from a trip, he discovered he loved fossils too. “My dad brought home fragments of shark teeth from
Barbados,” said Bondhus, who as a 12-year-old tied one of the teeth with a leather thong and made a necklace out of it. He’d admired sharks for a long time, their freedom and power. But the teeth, fossilized bits of animals that inhabited the sea long before the first humans stepped on
land, struck a new chord in him. In high school he special ordered a preserved shark to dissect in biology class. But the collecting bug didn’t strike till decades later. By that time, Bondhus’s mother and sister owned an antiques store in Becker, Pedal Inn Antiques, so the habit ran in the family. Except his collectibles were far, far older. “The Megalodon went extinct about 1.5 million years ago,” he

Mako sharks are called the falcons of the sea because of their extreme speed and maneuverability. The size and attractive shape of their teeth also make them appealing as stones placed in jewelry.
Even after millions of years, the serrations along the edge of the Megalodon tooth are sharp. The sharp points were used to slash and rip through a prey animal.

Spring Gold Rush returns Mother’s Day weekend
Fish first appear in the fossil record 530 million years ago. Though fossils abound, their survival after millions of years is a miracle. For a specimen to be preserved, its body had to be made of materials that could be fossilized and then it had to be subjected to appropriate, ideal conditions.

“How do you tell if raccoons have got rabies?” I asked. “They look like this,” she said, hanging her tongue out, crossing her eyes, and staggering. “Why don’t you come with me,” I said. “You seem to be the expert.” Together we slowly crept down the aisles of the shop, me peering into jardinières, punch bowls, fishing creels, bread boxes, and anything else that might

“Get him out! Get him out!” shouted Linda, climbing down from the counter and reaching for the broom. Her plea gave me some pause. First of all, maybe the raccoon was a collector and therefore a legitimate customer deserving respect. Second, maybe it wasn’t a “him,” maybe it was a “her.” And finally, how would a raccoon of either gender react to having a broom swiped at it? Maybe those masks they wore indicated a low threshold of irritation. “Oh, no,” moaned Linda, “what if he’s got rabies?” By now, the raccoon had disappeared down a cross aisle. “Go after him; see if he’s got rabies.” I noticed that Linda was nominating me to make the medical diagnosis while she remained behind the counter brandishing the broom.

look. Apparently raccoons can count. Linda and I repaired to the back of the shop to discuss a new deportation strategy. After a great deal of whispering, no plan had been reached. We tip-toed back to the front of the shop to see what the raccoon was doing. He wasn’t there. Neither were the cookies. We quietly went in search of him again, finally locating him snoozing in a wicker doll buggy. We gently wheeled him out the door and parked the buggy on the porch, assuming that when he woke up he would go home to the wife and kiddies. I neatly Then lettered a sign reading,

by Joan Sween It was a lovely spring day and I was standing in the door of the mall, holding it open so the fresh air could come in. We’re right on the outskirts of town with farm fields near by and it was heaven to smell the warming earth and the promise of growing things to come. I was so intent on enjoying early spring that I failed to notice something walk between my feet and saunter into the mall until Linda, my work partner, shrieked, “Raccoon!” and leaped on top of the service counter. I turned around and sure enough, a fat, fluffy raccoon was heading down an aisle, tipping his nose up and sniffing curiously.

Bungalow owners will admit there is no single definition of a bungalow. The house is usually one or one and a half stories with deep eaves. In the bathrooms of early 1920s Twin Cities’ bungalows, you might find wainscoting and hexagonal bathroom tiles.
Gustav Stickley, born in Wisconsin in 1858, went on to become a renowned furniture maker in the American Craftsman style. Johnson refurbished his Gustav Stickley sideboard by replacing the missing plate rack.

Ceramic animal figurines offer up nature in miniature.

Anthropomorphic: Here’s where most ceramic animal renditions fall (and where Mickey M. would feel right at home). The animals have been given human-like traits and/ or attire. We see an umbrella-hoisting pig, or a skunk decked out in picture hat and gloves, and accept them as whimsical extensions of our own existence.
Once you’ve paid a visit to this animal kingdom, you won’t be able to resist returning time and again. Daybrighteners during World War II, they continue to cast their sunny spell in the present, sure to bring out the animal (or, at any rate, the animallover) in you.
