Statues take collectors on Grand Tour
The Runner. Made by Fonderia Artistica Sabatino de Angelis & Fils in Napoli, Italy. It is unusual in that it has a mounted seal. Circa 1850-1875. Statue, 18¾ inches h.; base 10½ x 4¾ inches. The statue is a copy of a Greek original found in the Roman ruins of Herculaneum, the town once buried, like Pompeii, under ash. The original Runner is paired with another, one now chasing the other in a museum in Italy. This specimen shows off perfectly the outstanding characteristic of a good bronze: details rendered by a chiseler. Strands of hair, individual fingers and fingernails, toes and toenails all show up in clear definition. “If you feel his hair, you can feel the sharpness. All of that detail is the work of a chiseler.”

Les Enfants d’ Edouard (The Children of Edward), by Francois Michel Pascal (1810-1882), 1852. Marked Daubrée editeur, designating the foundry. This bronze, a favorite of Passow’s, is in the French Troubadour style, a movement in the 1850s or ’60s depicting young innocent children. England’s child king Edward V and his brother Richard, a poignant historical subject, are reading together. The two children, also called the Princes in the Tower, were kept in the Tower of London, a prison, after the death of their father, Edward IV, in 1483, supposedly for their protection. However, they disappeared forever that summer. In 1852, Pascal showed the plaster version at the Salon, the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France, for over a century. Passow has never seen Les Enfants in this size before but has seen a smaller version in a book and a marble version sold online. In the strands of hair and other details, this statue displays the fine detail of a premier bronze. Underneath the statue, a giant bolt is immediately apparent. Passow identified at least four pieces that had been separately cast, including a main piece, a child’s head, and the stool.

German Shepherds (left), by Charles Paillet (18711937), France. Signed. Pre-WWI or a little after. 21 inches x 16 inches x 8½ inches. Signed in the front left corner Ch. Paillet Medaille D’Or. Paillet won a gold medal for this design at the annual art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. This is a lifetime bronze, meaning it was cast during the artist’s lifetime and not after his death. Dogs were one of the artist’s specialties. German Shepherds (above) Passow is as interested in the underside as in the outside of a statue because it gives more clues about its age. Most turn-of-the-century or older bronzes are cast in several pieces. This one is cast in three; each dog and the base is cast separately. “These bolts don’t look as old as some. Some have hand-cut nuts that were used to hold things together.”

That meant not only that it was a replica of a bigger, already famous image but that the foundry was using a method it had invented of producing the statue in various sizes.

And in an era before every tourist had a camera, statues also took the place of pictures and home movies. The demand for statues of all sizes was big. Besides looking for ways to keep their memories of the Grand Tour fresh, travelers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries wanted souvenirs that would decorate their homes, fuel the imagination, and spark conversation, so they scattered beauty, personality, and stories in the form of statues on tables and mantels and beside archways and entryways. homes, life-sized pairs often appeared at the foot of staircases or on either side of a fireplace. Craftsmanship is what really sets what Passow calls a Grand Tour bronze apart. Bronzes were usually cast in more than one part and bolted together. The separation into several parts enabled the artist to construct a more intricate design. Liquid bronze was poured into a mold through sprues and eventually hardened. When the mold and sprues were removed, the solid figure emerged with

Japanese bronze. Meiji period 1880-1900. It is signed on the bottom in Japanese characters. Once Passow gets that translated, he will be able to date it more accurately. “This is a good one—he has markings on the bottom of his paws. His coloring is well preserved, though when it was made, it stood out even more than it does now. The two-tone patina was a bunch of extra work. I’m presuming it meant they patinated it in two different ways. They ate away the metal in one area. They had to put on a coating, probably wax, to keep the other metal area from being eaten away. You see how shiny the lighter color is. The darker is more pitted. They did the smoothing of the statue first. Once they ate the metal away, they weren’t able to polish it down. It was all smooth like the lighter color of brown first.” Passow considers Japanese bronzes like this one equal to or better than any of the French bronze sculptors. Tigers sculptures also often appear attacking each other or on the back of an elephant or being stomped on by an elephant. “I unfortunately have never been able to own one,” Passow confessed. A foundry mark cast into it reads Cire perdue, indicating the lost wax method of casting. “When you look at it, it is more an impressionist interpretation of the subject, rather blurred, so they didn’t need to have the sharply drawn detail that came with chiseling. This is example shows that some cire perdue castings with cast seals can be right and old.” By Uriela. Made in Germany. Inscription on back: IA 2540. Circa 1895. Handmade in clay, baked, and then painted, this bust is a terra cotta in the Art Nouveau style. The markings on the base are meant to spell her name. Although Passow can’t make the writing out, her dark skin and the coins and bangles hanging from her headband indicate she is probably a heroine of the Middle East. She also has a small hole in her ear where an earring probably dangled, accentuating her neck. “It all comes from the touring,” Passow said. “They went to Europe, the Middle East, to Egypt.” Terra cotta busts painted and in good condition like this one are rare because they are fragile. “You cannot drop these, and the paint cannot stand big temperature or humidity changes.”

This was the New York World’s Fair. And I was there, too. In the official “Fair Guidebook,” event president Robert Moses noted, “the Fair aims to be universal, to have something for everyone.” That it did, which is why it retains its significance 50 years after the fact. Mid-century modern was the overriding architectural style. Space-age futurism, in the form of spheres, spires, and swooping, sweeping, building facades, resulted in a design environment just right for the atomic generation. New and more adaptable construction materials, such as fiberglas and
stainless steel, meant that anything that could be imagined could be built. Here was a place where the Jetsons would be right at home. (In fact, in some Fair advertising materials, they were.) Now, about my own World’s Fair connection: in 1965, I was chosen for the Boy Scout Service Corps. Our job: staffing the fair’s Boy Scout Pavilion. Our attire: old-fashioned campaign hats, and,
Scout Service Corps jacket and campaign hat. $125-150/set. (photos by DonaldBrian Johnson, except as noted))
over our regular khaki uniforms, must-wearat-all-times red nylon jackets. (Since this was summertime, many a sweltering Fair day was in store.) We were each assigned specific Pavilion duties. Mine: demonstrating mouthto-mouth resuscitation on Resusci-Annie. Remember her? This
lifelike plastic dummy had a full-sized head crowned with wispy blonde hair, and a realistic torso. When resuscitation was performed correctly, Annie’s chest would miraculously rise and fall. But, since Annie had to fold up in a suitcase when not in use, the rest of her was much less realistic. Her

legs, just ski pants stuffed with cotton batting, had a habit of flopping about the display table. Plus, Annie’s rubbery lips had to be wiped thoroughly with rubbing alcohol after each use, playing havoc with teenage complexions.

Gear heads glory in antique motorcycles by Virginia Broich ST. PAUL, MINN—They fish motorcycles out of lakes, excavate them from barns, borrow them from museums, buy them, trade them, restore them, coddle them, and congregate once a year to admire them. He modified this motorcycle with a specially built oil tank and starter. As he grew older, Wagner found it increasingly difficult to kickstart this motorcycle, so he installed an electric starter. The Old Times
Sometimes it doesn’t make much sense to us either by Joan Sween It was Monday at the Mall, following a perfectly lovely weekend. The Man I Married and I had spent all of Saturday going to garage sales. We hadn’t found any longlost Fabergé eggs, but I still brought home some treasures--22 paperback mysteries and a microwave egg poacher.

green? Do fat cells grow? I took a calming breath and in a nonchalant tone said, “Yes, we have been known to buy things from time to time.” “Good,” she said, reaching in her carton. What would it be? What would it be? She pulled out a newspaper-wrapped item. What is it? What is
