Fort Snelling
Preserving Minnesota’s military history
Architect and tour guide Chuck Liddy points out features during a walking tour of the Fort Snelling Upper Post. Behind him stand three remaining barracks. When they were built, hundreds of soldiers bedded down in each of these buildings every night. (Photos by Julie Holmquist)
Building 151 behind Officers’ Row was built to house bachelor officers. Liddy once saw a building at the Presidio of San Francisco that looked identical, except for the stucco and Spanish flair. This is because the military often built with standard design plans across the country.

In fact, the nearby Upper Post with its approximately 28 boarded-up buildings likely offers more surviving architectural artifacts than the mostly reconstructed Lower Post fort. One evening early in June, about thirty

Building 65 gives an example of historic preservation that takes into account a building’s entire period of significance. Part of the Guard House history is that soldiers once bricked up a door at left. However, this was so poorly done that the preservationists had to redo it. Liddy said crews purposely re-patched it with differentcolored brick and mortar to mimic the bricking-in done by the soldiers.

called the Post Headquarters or Clock Tower Building because of the c. 1880 Seth Thomas/Hotchkiss clock once installed in the Italianate-style tower. About this time, General Alfred H. Terry (a contemporary of George Custer) moved the Department of the Dakota from downtown Saint Paul to the Upper Post. (Liddy noted that this was a great disappoint for downtown businesses, who eventually convinced the government to transfer their lost clientele back
to the city.) Upper Post expansion was hasty, and poor building materials soon required General Terry to oversee repairs to problems like decaying pilings. The Upper Post and its buildings developed over many periods of high activity: The Spanish American War, World War I (about 183,000 soldiers were processed at the base), and World War II (roughly 300,000 to 400,000 men processed). Between the two World Wars, the base gained a reputation as the

The restored Seth Hotchkiss clock and gears are currently on display at the Historic Fort Snelling Visitor’s Center. The clock, which includes three faces and a bell, was first installed at Post Headquarters in 1883. It is run by 600 pounds of weights and a 125 pound pendulum and must be rewound after eight days.

VA Owned Buildings: Buildings 217 and 218 west of Bloomington Road still bear building numbers assigned during the time of Upper Post military activity. The buildings in this area are now owned by the VA. Liddy said this was the rear of the post, where barns, warehouses, jeeps, and tanks were kept, and where provisions came in.
Fort Snelling
explained, “the stuff that the WPA did in the have the liberty to play Thirties is historically favorites with certain just as important as the styles. “Even though Italianate-style Clock you may prefer Clock Tower building.” Tower, Italianate-type The VA buildings and you administered the Upper really don’t like Post from 1946 to about something that was built by the WPA in the Fort Snelling Thirties,” Liddy Cont. on page10 Cont. from page 6
Building 67, often referred to as the Clock Tower Building, was the first to be built on the Upper Post, c. 1879-81. For 130 years, it displayed a c. 1880 Seth Thomas/Hotchkiss clock. The rare clock was recently restored thanks to a $40,000 Partners in Preservation (PIP) grant courtesy of American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The clock is currently on display at the Historic Fort Snelling Visitor Center. There has been talk of repurposing the building for a charter school, although this has not happened yet.

Fort Snelling
Cont. from page 7
Officers’ Row (rear view): Ten officers’ houses (one a double family dwelling) stand abandoned on Officers’ Row. These homes were built between 1879 and 1905, changing over the years with actions such as the removal of a porch. Liddy said the exteriors became dirty, probably from a combination of wood and coal-burning appliances and from jet fuel from the nearby airport. Officers’ Row used to extend twice as far south toward where the airport is now. During World War II, the cantonment, or residential section, at the end of Officers’ Row housed extra soldiers in less substantial shelters dubbed “dog houses.”
1970, after which the land was deeded to the State of Minnesota and administered by the DNR for recreational purposes. The army vacated the last buildings in 1997. Hennepin County stepped in to assist the DNR with grants and bonding work for preservation. Miller and Dinwiddie architects performed reuse studies and continue to oversee restoration work like mothballing, masonry, and roof work with the assistance of minor convicts from Hennepin County Sentencing to Serve. Today, the view from old Taylor Avenue testifies to the past. Three barracks remain that each once housed hundreds of men. Ten surviving
August 2014 homes sit directly across in the abandoned Officers’ Row. The Clock Tower Building, Band Building, former jail, and hospital are among the other buildings still alive. Progress is slow, but Miller Dunwiddie Architecture continues to work toward their goal of keeping the post standing. “We’re trying to maintain the buildings long enough so that they can be reused for new purposes and keep the historical importance of Fort Snelling to the nation and the state,” said Liddy. --PRESS RELEASE ORONOCO, MINN.—All are invited to catch Gold Rush Fever at the 42nd anniversary of the Downtown Oronoco Gold Rush Days in Oronoco, Minn., from Friday, August 15 through Sunday, August 17. The city is
Oronoco set for Gold Rush Fever
proud to bill this as an outstanding show. The May 2010 issue of Country Living magazine listed the Downtown Oronoco Gold Rush Days among the top 12 antiques shows across the nation. This free premiere antiques show and flea
market event is located along the banks of the Zumbro River in historic Oronoco, Minn., (10 minutes north of Rochester and about 45 minutes south of the Twin Cities on Hwy 52). Hundreds of dealers from throughout the region fill over a thousand booths up and
down the picturesque hamlet’s streets. Just about the whole town participates in the event. It’s great fun, and it’s all for a great cause, too, as all proceeds help fund much-needed community projects, including the fire department. There is
fun, color, and excitement. Start your day with the veterans as they flip pancakes at the VFW, and then stop at the Fire Hall for a cool beverage and sandwich. Bring the whole family and Fido, too. Hours are Friday and Saturday, 7 a.m. to
7 p.m. and Sunday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visit goldrushmn.com for additional information, or contact Carol Olson, Event Coordinator, at 507-367-2111 or goldrush@bevcomm. net The 2015 show will be August 14-16.

The Old Times
Been there, done that, and probably much worse by Joan Sween I unlocked the mall and started turning on lights when I heard the door bing-bong. Today was the first work day of a new dealer. “Is that you, Jane?” I shouted. “Yes,” she shouted back. “What should I do to help?” “You can get the coffee going.” I kept on with the lights. Suddenly, “Aiigh! Help!” I raced to the front. “I’m coming!” Jane stood bug-eyed as water poured out of the coffee maker, all over the floor. “I just poured the water in and the pot started shooting it out all over!” she moaned. “That’s all right; it’s not your fault,” I said. “This is a different style of coffee pot. You put the empty pot under the grounds basket, and use this plastic pitcher to pour in the water.” “Oh,” she said. “I’m sorry I made a mess.” “That’s okay,” I said. “We should have warned you about it. You set up the coffee again, and I’ll mop the floor.” I gathered a pile of rags from behind the counter and got down on my hands and knees. By the time Jane got the coffee going again, I had mopped up the spill and had gotten the knees of my beige slacks wet and dirty. I handed the rags to Jane. “Squeeze these out and hang them up somewhere to dry,” I said. I went back to a booth where I had noticed that a customer had gone through a pile of tea towels and didn’t think it was necessary to fold them back up again. I could hear Jane wait on an early customer. Still carrying a couple tea towels, I went back to the front counter to make sure Jane knew how to file sales slips. “The sales slips get put in this file box behind the dealer’s number,” I told Jane. I looked at the sales slip. All it said was “blue vase $40.” “Awp!” I said, and burst out the doors, racing after the customer’s departing car,
flung open the door of the microwave, and sprayed white foam all over the microwave, the snack area and myself. “What on earth was that!” I exclaimed while scraping foam off my head. “It was your mop rags,” said Jane. “I thought they would dry faster in the microwave. I feel really stupid.” We could hear the village volunteer fire crew pull up out front. WHEEOO! WHEEOO! WHEEOO! Jane started to tear up. “Don’t feel bad,” I said, patting her shoulder. “Lots of people have probably discovered the hard way that you can’t dry fabric in a microwave.” After the fire truck left, Jane and I surveyed the damage. A thick black cloud hung in a layer near the ceiling, the microwave was black inside, everything was covered in white foam, and the whole mall stank of smoke. “Why don’t you go prop open the front doors,” I said to Jane. “I’ll turn on the overhead fans, and we’ll see if we can clear out the smoke.” “Okay,” she said. “Hey, there’s a door at

By Joan Sween frantically waving my tea towels, trying to catch his eye. I ran as fast as I could, but he got away. I dragged back to the mall, sweaty from my exertions, my blouse tails hanging out, and my hair in straggles. “You have to record the dealer number, the inventory number, and save the price tag,” I panted at Jane. “I’m sorry,” she said, looking downcast. “That’s okay,” I said. “You’ll get the hang of things eventually.” Just then, thick, black, acrid smoke began rolling through the mall. The fire alarm went off. SHREE! SHREE! SHREE! I ran toward the back of the mall. Smoke was pouring out of our microwave. I grabbed a fire extinguisher,

entranced audiences with its optimistic promise: you may live on a dusty Kansas farm, but with just a dash of magic (and a cooperative tornado), you too might make it “over the rainbow.” The reasons for the
appeal of Oz are many. There’s the spot-on casting (can you imagine anyone more wide-eyed than Judy Garland’s Dorothy? Wickeder than Margaret Hamilton’s Wicked Witch?) The Arlen & Harburg score included the instant smash ballad “Over the Rainbow.” And when it

collector plates and the like, to line the Yellow Brick Road from here to the Emerald City; very few top a hundred dollars. After 75 years, The Wizard of Oz still commands our hearts. Sure we know how it
all ends: the Scarecrow gets his brains; the Tin Man gets his heart; the Cowardly Lion finds his courage; the Witch gets melted; the Wizard sails off somewhere in his balloon, and Dorothy, at long last, gets to go home. But each time we see The Wizard of Oz, it’s like we’re seeing it for the
very first time, propped up on our elbows in front of a tiny TV, waiting for those opening credits to roll. Pass the popcorn, please. It’s time to journey “over the rainbow”!
