A Mighty Tonka is paired with a Tonka Loader. In 1946 a tiny Minnesota start up company emerged on the shores of Lake Minnetonka called Mound Metalcraft. This company evolved into the giant Tonka Toys. The word Tonka is a Dakota Indian word meaning great or large. (Photos by Les Broich)
Milton Bradley changed the name of the game Pretzel to Twister. Originally, Saint Paul-based ad man Reyn Guyer called the game, “King’s Footsie.” His idea of a back-to-school promotional display for shoes morphed into a successful game that many kids still play today.
Evel Knievel, American daredevil of the 1970s, inspired multiple miniatures by performing death-defying motorcycle stunts. The majority of his jumps were made on the Harley-Davidson XR-750 motorcycle. Some of his successful jumps were made over as many as 12 cars and three vans, 100 rattlesnakes and two vans, and 14 Greyhound buses.

by Virginia Broich SAINT PAUL, MINN.- “Childhood’s joy land, mystic, merry toyland, once you pass its borders, you can ne’er return again.” So goes the song from Walt Disney’s 1961 Christmas attraction, Babes in
Toyland. Contradicting these lyrics, the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul, Minn., is giving visitors the opportunity to relive their childhoods. They can enter the toyland worlds of the mid-20th century and reconnect with magical times.
The exhibit is divided into three living rooms representing the decades of the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s and are designed to look like doll houses. “Like a 1960s Barbie house,” said Bill Dinon, a museum supervisor at

The Old Times Invented by Ronald Howe in 1963, the Kenner Easy-Bake Oven used a 100 watt electric light bulb. “OSHA wouldn’t allow Easy-Bake Ovens today,” said Bill Dinon, a museum supervisor. An online article at answers.com, “Ten Things You Didn’t Know About the EasyBake Oven,” says the oven, which originally sold for an amount equal roughly to $115 today, was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2006. Living on in updated versions, the oven inspired a chefdeveloped cookbook in 2003.

Back in the 1950s, the now collectible Hopalong Cassidy lunch box triggered the era of metal lunch boxes that lasted until the 1990s, when injectedmolded plastic replaced metal. Mr. Potato Head holds a special place in toy production history. At first, buyers got only features and had to supply their own head-a real potato. Soon buyers were finding rotting potato heads in the toy box and under the bed, leading to new safety regulations and the production of hard plastic bodies and safety-tipped face and body parts.

The Spell It game, produced on cardboard, appeared in the exhibit with other “playthings with a purpose.” Educational toys enjoyed a big surge in popularity and production in the post World War II era, endorsed by medical, teaching, and toy-making professions. The Mouse Trap game was a 1963 creation of the Ideal Toy Company. When Dinon reminisced about this game he played as a child, he remembered he was intrigued by the parts that moved to capture a mouse. “There was no battery or computer chip. It was just a board game,” he said.

The Old Times
Cooties got their start in Minnesota, and the infestation quickly spread nationwide when Dayton’s, perhaps Minneapolis’s most prominent department store, decided to take a chance on creator Herb Schaper’s little critters in 1950 and ended up selling more than 5,000 sets by the end of that year. Schaper, a mailman, didn’t set out to be a toy inventor. The cootie emerged under his hands first as a wooden fishing lure that he whittled as he walked his route.
Betsy McCall paper dolls were first introduced in McCall’s Magazine in May 1951. The cover of that issue shows a young girl holding the first cut out paper doll of Betsy McCall. The paper doll artist from May 1951 to June 1955 was Kay Morrissey. On this page, “Introducing Betsy McCall,” Morrissey first created Betsy, clothes for Betsy, and added her dog, Nosy, and his dog bed.

Revell model kits that had to be assembled--or, more accurately, that thousands of mechanically oriented kids got to assemble--came on the market in 1945 and were big sellers for several decades. In Toys of the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s, authors Kate Roberts and Adam Scher assert, “If you were building plastic models as a kid during the 1950s, ’60s, and ‘70s, chances are Revell had you covered. Authenticity was the company’s forte and the detailing was amazing, so good that in 1960 the Kremlin purchased several kits to beef up Soviet intelligence on U.S. warship designs.”

Jarts, or lawn darts, are large, weighted darts with three plastic fins intended to be tossed underhand towards a horizontal ground target. Advertised for adults, beginning in the late 1960s, but played with by kids, a wayward throw of a jart caused more than one injury and, finally, one death. On December 19, 1988, the Consumer Products Safety Commission banned the sale of all lawn darts in the United States.

He changed his image from fighter of military enemies in an army uniform to a fighter of mummies, crocodiles, and spies during the postwar peace movement, according to Laurie Johnson, interpreter at “History a la Cart” in the exhibit. “These were acceptable enemies,” she said. The Old Times
King Kamehameha had it lucky They didn’t have flea markets in 1795
By Joan Sween The Man I Married and I shop differently when we’re at flea markets. He looks for anything bigger than R2D2, and I usually buy items smaller than a breaded shrimp. We often have to split up. As we started our favorite flea market early one morning, TMIM looked at his watch and said, “Okay, we’ll touch base at 10:00 in front of the ceramics booth of the Bonanza Lady under the big tree.” The “Bonanza Lady” had an overachieving chest and was in the habit of wearing necklines that dropped to one-fourth of an inch above her nummies. TMIM didn’t realize that because he had chosen to wear a particularly colorful Hawaiian shirt that day, I would be able to pick him out of the crowd any time I wanted. I just had to look for a neon glow and people suddenly donning their sunglasses. We each took off at our own speed. At a few minutes to 10:00, I headed for the Bonanza Lady’s booth under the big tree. When I got there, I discovered there was a booth, but it was set up by two men. The lady in question had reserved a different spot this season. Oh, great. Was I supposed to wait at the booth under the big tree or the booth of the Bonanza Lady? I looked around in bewilderment and then spotted a brilliant

Hawaiian shirt halfway down a row. I scampered up behind him, slid my arms around his waist, gave him a big squeeze and cooed playfully, “Hey, Big Boy. Wanna have a little fun under a tree?”
I scampered up behind him, slid my arms around his waist, gave him a big squeeze and cooed playfully, “Hey, Big Boy. Wanna have a little fun under a tree?” “Excuse me!” said a lady standing next to him, who was shaped exactly like R2D2, but much, much bigger. Eeek! Hawaiian Shirt wasn’t TMIM. His
lady friend grabbed his ear and growled at me, “Do that again and you’re gonna get hurt, Bimbo!” The plowshare bird he was carrying smacked me across the face as she hauled him away. I made my way to the new booth location of Bonanza Lady. I got out a pad and wrote a note. “If a man in a Hawaiian shirt shows up looking for me, would you give him this note?” I asked. “Sure, no problem,” she said as she folded the note and tucked it into her Big Valley. “How’d you get that shiner?” she asked. I trudged away, not sure which I should worry about most--a black eye or that note warming in its cozy crevasse. Up ahead I spotted another brilliant Hawaiian shirt. This time I was positive I had the right man, I sneaked up behind him. “Who let you out of the house wearing that ghastly shirt?” I asked.
He stopped. He turned. He was carrying a little purse dog. He wasn’t TMIM. “Pardon me, Madam,” he said in an aggrieved tone. “This is an original $860 Duke Kahanamoku shirt from the 1940’s. People who wear original $2.98 knit shirts from K Mart should be careful what they’re calling ghastly.” As he turned to go, his dog bit my hand. I hollered, “Ow!” and jumped back, right into the arms of another Hawaiian shirt, who was also not TMIM, but who did step on my foot. “Ow!” I ran for my life. I sat on a bench between the cheese curds and the ice cream sandwich concession stands. I
