The Old Times
A slice of the toaster scene By Les Broich ROCHESTER, MINN.— On its way to becoming toast, a slice of bread can be perched, pinched, turned, swung, slid, driven, tipped, flopped, dropped or popped up. At last year’s convention in Rochester, Minn., participants celebrated all of these methods of making toast and the development of appliances that do the toasting. Local hosts were Marlys and Maynard Jones. A highlight of the convention was a tour of the toaster shed, built by Maynard to house the Jones’s collection of 1,100 toasters. The convention’s best-of-show award, “Toast of the Town,” was presented to Maynard for a toaster made by Illinois Standard Manufacturing Company in Chicago, Ill. The operating instructions are on the Maynard Jones pointed out the assets of his Universal Model E9410, manufactured by Landers, Frary & Clark in the late 1920s. “The toaster is operated by the two buttons on its base,” Jones said. “Pressing a button swings the basket out so bread can be inserted or toast removed.” Release the button and the basket rotates and swings back to the toaster. Many collectors consider the E9410 toaster one of the most striking ever made. It has been called the “Sweetheart” toaster because of the diamond shape and earring-patterned handles.

In July, 1909, General Electric designer Frank Shailor submitted his patent application for the Model D-12 toaster. The D-12 is referred to as a “Wire Fence.” The fence is bare resistance wire. To make toast, you have to place the bread inside the fence. Of course, when the bread has turned to toast, it must be removed from inside the fence. Convention participants speculated that, in addition to the toast, this toaster produced a significant number of burns and shocks. General Electric marketed it as the “Radiant Toaster.” “Pacific Electric Heating Company and Simplex also began producing toasters around this time,” Jones said, “but the D-12 is recognized as the first commercially successful electric toaster sold for consumer use.”(Photos by Les Broich unless otherwise noted)

Richard Larrison showed an Edison screw fitting, also known as a socket set; one end of the cord would screw into a light bulb socket and the other end plugged into an appliance. Larrison owns J.R.’s, The World’s Largest Small Appliance Museum, in Diamond, Mo., where he houses some 6,000 different appliances, including 1,200 toasters. Asked what attracted him to toasters, Larrison replied, “I like the different ways they work. Also the designs.” Larrison has paid as much as $5,000 for toasters that, after about 25 years of collecting, he attests are one-of-a-kind.

Toaster Collectors Association President Vicki Mattheis was able to indulge in her love for old toaster advertising when she assembled the display featuring colorful Toastmaster ads. Mattheis decided to bring some of that color to life by setting out dishes matching those shown in the ads. “When doing anything involving Toastmaster, it is wise to involve Eric Murrell. He has all the information anyway,” Matthies stated, “so I just went to him when I needed some answers.”

“It can be cumbersome to operate,” Maynard Jones said of his “Toast of the Town” award-winning toaster, “but it makes good toast.” Jones supported his claim by making some. Toaster Collectors Association (TCA) President Vicki Matthies turned her Perc-O-Toaster so everyone could see the nonstandard plug design on the back. “They were trying to make it easy to use,” Matthies’s husband, TCA Treasurer Richard Matthies, surmised. “One of the results was the unusual connection of power cord to appliance.” Vicki warned, “If you plan on buying one, be sure it has the original cord. There are no reproductions available.” Perc-O-Toasters were built to last, but the difficulty of finding them with the original cord makes hers, also in excellent condition, a rarity. She was about to buy one in 2005, at a TCA national convention that also was held in Rochester, Minn. “As I was walking toward it, another of our members beat me to the table and snatched it up for $150,” Matthies related. She spent the next eight years searching for an affordable Perc-O-Toaster. Her luck finally changed. Included with the donations from Dan LaBelle for 2013’s silent auction was the object of Matthies’s hunt. “I was lucky enough to get my Perc-O-Toaster this year at the silent auction for well under that $150 price!” she proclaimed.
On February 6, 1906 Albert Marsh, an engineer working at Hoskins Manufacturing Company, received a patent for a nickel-chromium alloy called nichrome. Nichrome wire can be heated to high temperatures and reheated repeatedly without starting a fire or otherwise damaging the wire. Because of this patent, any manufacturer using nichrome had to pay a licensing fee. Most electric appliance manufacturers used this wire, and those devices carried the LMP cartouche, consisting of the letters LMP, which stand for Licensed under Marsh Patents, surrounded by a triangle. Sometimes the triangle is missing. The symbol appeared on toasters from 1915 to 1923, when Marsh’s patent expired. His employer, the Hoskins Manufacturing Company, marketed their engineer’s invention and is still in business today selling nichrome wire.

Produced during the late 1920s and early 1930s by the Armstrong Electric Company of Huntington, W.Va., the Perc-O-Toaster is a hybrid designed to make both toast and coffee. Bread is placed between heating elements in a drawer so no turning is required to toast both sides. Another component containing heating coils fits under the percolator. An ad in a May 1931 Saturday Evening Post priced the appliance at $11.85.

Collector Maynard Jones took the best-of-show “Toast of the Town” award for this unique specimen designed to boil eggs and to toast bread at the same time. The hole is for a butter container, which Jones will leave empty until he can find an original container. The device caught Jones’s attention when someone, wondering what it was, sent him a picture. Jones replied that if it was for sale, he would be interested in buying it. Two months later the owner replied in the affirmative. The egg-shaped objects in back are part of an actual egg timer. “You wind up the egg timer and set the time,” Jones explained. “At the set time, chains would pull a basket of eggs out of boiling water. Here the chains lift the cover.” Not much is known about the origins and the development of this toaster except that it was built by Illinois Standard Manufacturing Company of Chicago, Ill. “Myself and others have tried to research it,” Jones said, “and we’re not getting anywhere. I think it’s from the 1920s.”

Excel produced the Toastoy in the late 1920s. In this photo one of its tulip design doors can be seen in a mirror. The Toastoy measures about five inches high and was a functioning miniature toaster for kids. It was designed to work with a half slice of bread. Note the exposed heating element. “Can you imagine that on a toy store shelf today?” Marlys Jones asked. This toaster was also advertised for adult use when only a half slice of toast was desired. The Toastoy could be ordered from Excel Electric Company, Muncie, Ind. for $1 or for $1.25 if shipped west of Denver, Colo.

Ken Huggins sat with two of his 1,507 toasters. “Both of these toasters are very rare,” Huggins said. The one on the left is a Suzor Carousel Toaster. It is a swinger, which means the baskets pivot on a vertical axis. This is accomplished by turning the knob on top. This toaster was made in France during the 1930s. “I have not seen another toaster like it,” Huggins stated. The dial toaster on the right was manufactured in 1929 by the Dial Toaster Corporation of Minneapolis. A person would dial to the desired setting. “This toaster was designed by a very talented mechanical engineer,” Huggins said. Elmer H. Smith was granted his patent July 9, 1929. Huggins’s prior collections included radios and automobiles. He started collecting toasters in 1995; his collection was recognized as the largest in the world by Guinness World Records on July 31, 2012, when he had 1,284 toasters. One of Huggins’ interests is observing the parallel development of the toaster and electricity in our culture.

Manufactured by Landers, Frary & Clark, these Universal toasters date from the late 1920s to early 1930s. The brass toaster on the left is model E9422. “It was originally nickel-plated,” Eric Murrell said, “but the finish has been stripped by the previous owner.” The nickel-plated E9422 cost $10.95. The chrome-plated model E7222 on the right was priced at $12.95. “In 1929 a non-automatic toaster could be purchased for around $2.50, so these were high-end luxury appliances,” Murrell noted. “In toastercollecting circles, these toasters are called ‘sliders’ because the toast slides in and out of the toaster in a basket.” These toasters are automatic. At the end of the heating cycle, the spring-loaded basket is released, and the toast flies out. “I think these automatic sliders are in response to the Waters-Genter Toastmaster pop-up of 1926,” Murrell said. “I have an advertising brochure from the E9422 that touts its ability to deliver toast ‘entirely free of the oven,’” Murrell stated. “This plays on the ‘no burnt fingers’ idea of most early toaster innovation, but also I think it’s an attempt to differentiate this toaster from the vertical pop-up.”

Built by the Chicago Flexible Shaft Company, the Sunbeam Model T-9 has been called possibly the most popular model ever made. Advertisements claimed “the lovely oval design is the last word in modern styling by George Scharafenberg.” Sometimes referred to as the World’s Fair toaster, it was first produced in the year 1939, coinciding with the opening of the 1939 New York World’s Fair; it continued in production through the 1940s. The manufacturer did nothing to dispel the notion of the logo etched on the toaster being a reference to the Trylon and Perisphere of the fair. Collectors have also noted that viewing the toaster logo upside down reveals a “T” with a “9” superimposed on it. But there’s a skunk in the flower patch. The Model T-7, which preceded the T-9, has the same logo etched on it.

The Old Times As World War I was ending, Charles Strite was in Stillwater, Minn., working on a toaster that would not require constant attention to keep the toast from burning. He achieved his goal by marrying springs to variable timers and filed for a patent on his pop-up toaster May 29, 1919. The WatersGenter Company of Minneapolis acquired the patent rights and sold the toasters to hotels, hospitals and Childs restaurants. A lever lowered each pair of bread slices, and an arm could be set in a slot to determine how dark the toast got.
The first pop-up toaster intended for use at home, the Toastmaster Model 1-A-1 manufactured by the WatersGenter Company of Minneapolis, arrived on the toaster scene in 1926. The company was created in 1921 to produce the commercial pop-up model patented by Charles Strite of Stillwater, Minn., in 1919. This scaled-down version of the commercial toaster was designed by Murray Ireland, a factory superintendent. Its introduction caught the nation’s attention, and in 1927, March was designated National Toaster Month. An ad in the March 5, 1927 Saturday Evening Post promised: “This amazing new invention makes perfect toast every time! Without turning! Without burning!”

development in the history of toasters. “After nichrome, they really started making toasters,” Maynard Jones said. In 1909, a patent application was submitted for the General Electric Model D-12 toaster. Designed by Frank Shailor, the D-12 is recognized as the first commercially successful electric toaster. Some major influences on the growth in the popularity of toasters were the increasing availability of electricity, Otto Rohwedder’s creation of a pre-sliced-loaf and sealed-bag process,

The cover of the winter 2013 issue of the Toaster Collectors Association’s newsletter, The Saturday Evening Toast, proclaims: “Downton Abbey gets a Toaster!” The toaster pictured here, from Ken Huggins’s collection, is the model that appeared on the mega popular BBC production, complete with its original box. Newsletter editor Eric Murrell said the toaster scene appeared in season three. Not everyone was happy with head housekeeper Mrs. Hughes’s latest acquisition. “Carson, the head butler, is not accustomed to change and is not amused. The scene is nothing more than a sub-sub-sub-plot, but it illustrates how everyone in the early 20th century had to come to terms with new ideas--like electricity in the home.” (Photo by Virginia Broich)
Here is a 1935 hospitality set from Marlys Jones’s Toastmaster collection. Hospitality sets came to the toaster scene in 1933. “They were considered chic and sophisticated,” said Eric Murrell, the TCA’s go-to person for all things Toastmaster. “They were often given as wedding presents,” Murrell continued. “Marlys probably bought this set from me.” A set included a tray with a pop-up toaster and dishes for butter, jam, and other toast toppings. “The hostess would set out the tray so guests could watch the toast pop up,” Murrell explained. “Think about it!,” Murrell exclaimed. “It was so revolutionary. Here was a toaster you didn’t have to watch. But then they brought it out to watch it!” A 1941 ad shows a similar hospitality set priced at $25. The online US Inflation Calculator shows an equivalent 2013 purchasing power of $397.75. Production of the sets ceased in 1954. By then, pop-up toasters were no longer a novelty.
According to biographical information from his grandson, Lloyd Copeman’s business was inventing. He had about 700 patents to his name. Grandson Kent Copeman reported, “Lloyd and his wife Hazel were windowshopping, and they were looking at an electric toaster displayed in a shop window.” At the time electric toasters toasted bread on one side and then the bread had to be flipped by hand to toast the other side. The story goes that Hazel asked Lloyd to invent a toaster that would automatically turn the toast. Kent Copeman claimed, “Family oral history continues to say that she made a model of the toaster using hairpins.” In 1914 a toaster patent was issued to Hazel B. Copeman for the first toaster to turn the toast without having to touch the bread. It was called the “Automatic” toaster. Companies wanting to produce similar toasters had to pay royalties to Copeman or come up with a different way to turn the toast. The first Westinghouse toasters were identical to the Copeman toaster except the Westinghouse name and the words “Copeman Patents” appear on the nameplate. 302 Oak St • Farmington, MN 651-463-3401 www.VintageMarketplace.org An Occasional Shop Located in Downtown Farmington, MN

Some toasters were designed to drop down instead of to pop up. A flap is closed so the bread slice is trapped near the heating elements. After the bread is inserted, an activation lever is pressed. When the time set for toasting is reached, the flaps open and the toast drops out. The “pop down” toaster pictured here is a Delta. “It’s probably from the 1940s,” Maynard Jones said.

Membership voted Eric Murrell’s Toaster Cafe exhibit the best display of the show. He was honored with the “Most Toastworthy Display” award. “I’d rather have this award than the Nobel Prize,” said a straight-face Murrell. At his table was a cafe menu that featured toasters for sale instead of toast. His interest in toasters began in 1976. “My wife Susan and I saw pictures of toasters in a book by Artman [E. Townsend Artman, Toasters 1909-1960] and thought this would be a fun thing to collect,” Murrell said, “and within a week we purchased four toasters.” Their collection now numbers over 300.
Charles Strite’s 1929 patenting of an automatic pop-up toaster for home use and, beginning in 1930, Wonder Bread’s marketing of standardsized, pre-sliced bread. While it became simpler to make toast, the same cannot be said about toaster collecting. That patent number that was going to identify a toaster might instead be for a part within the toaster. Comparable toasters often sell at significantly different prices. This seems to leave us with toasters equal in quality but not equal in value.
This Waters-Genter Company Model 1-F-1 commercial toaster stands 18 inches high. The 1-F-1 was marketed to restaurants, cafeterias and sandwich shops. Ads claimed over 40,000 of the toasters were used daily. The device had the capacity for toasting 12 slices at once. It was from a toaster like the 1-F-1 that, in 1919, Charles Strite designed a smaller, two-lever popup toaster for commercial use. The 2014 Toaster Collectors Association (TCA) annual convention is coming up in Charleston, S.C.

Toastrite toasters were made by the Pan Electric Manufacturing Company of Cleveland, Ohio. The toasters were built during the late 1920s and were produced for just a few years before the Depression. Sometimes misidentified as porcelain, they are actually made with onyxide china. The Toastrite is a percher, which means the bread stands alone near the heating element. A variety of colors offered the possibility of matching tableware and other decorations. The toaster was advertised as “tremendously sturdy” and “practically everlasting.” The Blue Willow pattern can be hard to find and is pursued by most serious collectors. “The Toastrites came in 11 colors,” Maynard Jones said, “and there are three or four that are one of a kind.” These one-of-a-kind toasters were most likely created at the request of company officers to commemorate a special event. Some Toastrite toasters sell in the $400 to $600 range, but prices at the $4,000 to $6,000 level are not uncommon. According to Jones, “Some of these prices have been coming down.”

The Old Times
Minnesota has lots of “nice,” but no chutzpah by Joan Sween Aunt Clara, who was visiting from the East Coast, and I were going to the big antique show and flea market. We’ve all heard the expression, “You can never be too thin or too rich,” but Aunt Clara was pushing the envelope. She didn’t have an ounce of body fat anywhere and probably weighed 115 pounds--maybe 98 if you took off all the diamond jewelry. She even had diamonds embedded in each long pointed painted fingernail. She was worth the budget of a small nation sashaying along on four-inch stiletto heels (diamonds in the shoe clips). We stopped at a booth that had a tall, American Brilliant Period, cut glass vase. I picked it up carefully and was admiring it. It was rather pricy at $250, but tall enough to support some of my favorite long-stemmed bouquets. The vendor came over. “Isn’t that a lovely piece?” she said. “Yes,” I said, “it’s beautiful.” Suddenly, long,
diamond-studded talons hooked themselves into my arm and pulled me aside. “What on earth are you doing!” hissed Aunt Clara. “Are you nuts? Were you raised in a closet? Don’t tell her the vase is beautiful!”
She didn’t have an ounce of body fat anywhere and probably weighed 115 pounds-maybe 98 if you took off all the diamond jewelry. “Why not?” I said. “It is beautiful.” “You have to haggle!” said Aunt Clara. “Drive her price down.” “Well, of course,” I said, smiling at Aunt Clara’s panic-stricken face. “I was planning to negotiate.” “Thank goodness!”
History visits Little Falls at Linden Hill --PRESS RELEASE LITTLE FALLS, MINN.--You are invited to visit a mansion full of beautiful antiques, scrumptious desserts, delicious wines, Irish tea, and Reality Roasters coffee during an evening of “Historia on the Hill” at Linden Hill in Little Falls, Minn. The event will be held Thursday, October 30, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., in the Musser mansion at Linden Hill Historical Event Center in Little Falls, Minn. Antique photography and costumes from the Musser collection and the work of Minneapolis-based fine art photographer Timothy G. Piotrowski, a 2011 Minnesota State Arts Board recipient, will combine to tell an interesting story of Victorian times. Limited seating. Tickets, $20 for nonmembers and $17 for members, include the
program, self-touring the mansion, desserts and beverages, and are available at Linden Hill in Little Falls, at info@ linden-hill.org or by calling 320-616-5580.
gasped Aunt Clara. We approached the booth again. I smiled at the vendor and said, “Could you do any better on the price of that vase?” “I could go two hundred,” said the vendor, putting on a regretful expression to show the discount would probably drive her to the poor house. “Oh my,” I said, glowing at the generosity of the discount. Again the talons, this time with an added body block that caused me to step onto the paw of a German Shepherd who was passing behind us along with a man in a leather jacket. “Hey, watch it!” growled the man. “Grrr!” growled the German Shepherd. “Unbelievable!” growled Aunt Clara. “They told me Minnesotans were polite, but I never dreamed it was this idiotic. Stand back and I’ll show you how we do it in the East.” She approached the vendor. “Honey,” she said, “I know times are tough, but asking $200 for a
vase with a crack running through it, is not reasonable.” “What!” gasped the vendor. “There’s no crack in that vase!” “Sure there is,” said Aunt Clara, holding the vase up to the light. “See? It starts here near the rim and runs down almost to the bottom.” She ran a finger slowly down the length of the vase. “It probably won’t hold water.” “I don’t see a crack,” said the vendor. Neither did I. “Are your glasses okay?” said Aunt Clara. “When’s the last time you had your prescription updated?” “Well, uh… not for a while,” said the vendor. “Oh, dear. How about $150?” “Surely you’re joking,” gasped Aunt Clara. “One hundred and fifty dollars for a vase that won’t even hold water? A vase that’s only good for looking at? Why one hundred would still be highway robbery.” “All right! All right!” trembled the vendor. “One hundred dollars and it’s yours.”

DEALER’S CHOICE
By Joan Sween “Well, all right,” said Aunt Clara, “but just because I’m a fool for pretty things to look at.” Thrusting the bag with the wrapped vase at me, Aunt Clara bustled down the aisle. “It’s like shooting fish in a bucket,” she crowed approaching a different booth. Pointing to an exquisitely carved Tramp Art chest, she gushed, “Look, it’s just like the ones they have in Pier One. Isn’t it
cute?” “Pier One!” choked the bearded vendor. “That’s over one hundred years old!” “Go on,” laughed Aunt Clara. “Don’t kid a kidder.” I slinked away without listening to any more. I guess I’d rather pay more and negotiate less. © 2014 Joan Sween Joan Sween, a former English teacher and dramaturge, is an antiques dealer in southeastern Minnesota who has written three books: Nice Girls Don’t Bite, a paranormal mystery featuring two Minnesota Nice antiques dealers; a collection of her columns titled Dealer’s Choice; and Deathblow: The Encore Killer Always Returns.

Minnefest means memorabilia & more
“Sometimes it is difficult to put a date with a toaster,” Jones said. “Some toasters sold for a very short time and some others sold for 15 years,” he continued. “We just don’t know when time started or when time ended with some toasters,” he said. Sometimes a toaster would be sold to a different company, but the toaster remained unchanged. “I have three toasters that are alike. They are identical but carry the names Rock Island Manufacturing, E-Z Turn and Bee-Vac,” Jones stated. “I just can’t find any difference in them. By the way,” Jones added, “many of the older toasters had fancy doors with holes cut in them for patterns. Manufacturers found out that closed doors kept moisture in and made better toast.” toast-making devices. To learn more, visit toastercollectors.org
