A Family History in 3D Be Our Guest
Louis Grams
Guest Columnist
By Louis Grams My Grandpa Grams loved Christmas. He would always have a carefully decorated tree in his living room, and nearby there was a plaster and wood mountain about five feet tall with many tiers of terraces winding around the tapered cone. On the terraces was a whole world of figures—animals, people, and trees (all

This is a more recent addition to our collection, perhaps seven years old, but it is a good representative of the various Nativity scenes that are represented in about 15 ornaments on our trees. This one, from Mexico, is made from a gourd, hollowed out and cut open. It is about 3½ inches tall. We also have 14 actual Nativity sets from around the world that decorate our home.
This is the very first ornament I ever received. The kids in our neighborhood had a custom of exchanging Christmas ornaments, and this one was given to me in 1950 by the son of the then Chief of Police of Minneapolis. The ornament is German blown glass. The tradition of exchanging ornaments at Christmas extended to and continues in my family and among some of our friends. Over the years folks have brought us ornaments from all around the world and we have gathered ornaments wherever we have traveled. I lost count of them somewhere over 1,200. This German glass ornament (2 in.) came to the U.S. with my great grandfather. It still has the reed assembly that allows it to be blown like a horn, though the sound is now pretty raspy. The hanger has been missing for years, but it still gets placed on a branch of our tree each year. This ornament is roughly 180 years old.
I would have preferred a game ball with the autographs of all of the great Twins players of the era, but I settled for Twins ornaments for both years that they took the World Series. I mean, we live in Minnesota. How could we not have something to mark those great days?
Six hand crocheted pandas, each with a distinct personality, made their way to our home from China about 35 years ago, when a friend of ours made an educational trip there. Each one is unique. Other Asian ornaments on our tree come from Malaysia, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and others.

The Old Times
A traditional German blown-glass bear was given to me by my father in 1953. Its colors have faded a bit, but it still has a favored place on the tree. At the time, there was a wonderful German import store in Minneapolis named Holtzerman’s. Every year at Christmas we would make a trip there to select ornaments to give as gifts, to eye their amazing wind-up toys, and to bring home a supply of marzipan candies shaped like fruits and vegetables.
Not all of our ornaments rise to the level of being “antiques”; some of them are just fun. This resin pot of coffee with cup never stops pouring. It was a gift from a friend who used to own a huge Christmas store in Rockford, Ill. He had some of the cleverest ornaments around.
Not every ornament on our tree was intended to be a Christmas ornament when it was made. This is a nutmeg grater from Grenada in the Caribbean, a gift from close friends who spent over three years working there. Nutmeg is one of the main crops on this beautiful island. This “ornament” also reminds me of my own trip to Grenda to lead a conference there.
What can I say? I married a nurse, and I have managed to keep her busy for 43 years with way too many illnesses and surgeries. This good little wooden German nurse is prepared to give a big injection with the dullest possible needle in the world. We have many German ornaments and many German ancestors.
This is one of a set of four tiny brass and glass lanterns (3 in. tall) that a friend of ours sent us in 1987 from Turkey, where they were made. The lanterns actually open, and a small candle can be placed inside.

The Old Times
This wooden “Hun” or Viking was the first ornament I gave to Nancy, while we were engaged in 1970. The idea of giving her a bearded Hun found its inspiration in my own beard and the fact that we called each other “Hon.” We’ve exchanged ornaments every year since then. The wooden Hun, actually a Viking, is from Norway and has a cloth cape. This fiber and feather owl was given to me by my father in about 1952. It was the first of many birds to join the collection. One of the largest of our ornaments is a 16-inchlong Pheasant and one of the smallest ornaments is a tiny ¾inch-long Scarlet Tanager in a nest.

Every member of our family has at least a few ornaments made by my mother over the years. From time to time, she would come up with an idea for ornaments to give away that she could make from scratch, such as this cloth angel. It is about 4 inches tall and was one of more than a dozen like it that she made and gave away.
parents would make special expeditions to Holtzerman’s, a fabulous German import store (no longer in existence) in Minneapolis, to find the most spectacular ornaments; these were not plain globes but intricate glass or wood wonders. When I went off on my own, I continued to carry on the Christmas ornament exchanges with friends, and when Nancy and I married, our Christmas trees continued to gain decorations as we

exchanged ornaments with each other, then with our children and many of our friends. As our family grew and our houses grew, we ended up with more trees and more decorations. Some of the trees were indeed decorated with plain globes, but the main tree (now two trees) became a carrier of “the collection,” which included ornaments from my great grandparents, grandparents, parents, our own family, and many, many friends.
When Nancy and I were married in 1971, a neighborhood friend gave us a box of over 20 different Christmas ornaments she had gathered during a year of study in France with travels around Europe. This wooden rocking horse is from Italy. Our friend collected the box of ornaments before Nancy and I were even dating and became a part of our neighborhood ornament exchange for many years.
Today our two trees are decked out with about 2,000 incandescent and LED lights and somewhere around 1,200 ornaments from all over the world—England,

The Old Times This 4-inch-long bugle we bought about 30 years ago can be played and produces enough noise to annoy just about anyone. Among other instru-ments on the tree are several wooden pianos, a porcelain organ, a wooden violin and harp, and other brass and glass horns. Our five children are all musical as are mom and dad.
Okay, it’s plastic, it’s tacky, and I loved it when my dad gave it to me as a six year old; each of our kids has loved it, and our grandkids love it. The metal disc in the plastic lantern spins off the heat of the lights on the tree. Of course, since we have increasingly gone over to LED lighting, which gives off much less heat, the spinner doesn’t turn quite so fast anymore, but it still is mesmerizing. We all stare at it at some point, and it spins up all kinds of Christmas memories.
This set of hand carved African animals was made in Tanzania. A friend brought them back for us as a Christmas present, knowing they would end up on our tree. This repurposed menagerie now takes its place on the smaller of our two main trees each year, where they can be viewed at close range. We also treasure a magnificent Tanzanian Nativity carved in ebony with African costumes and features. That set includes a giraffe and a rhino, among other unique animals, for the stable.

Blame it on the Canadians Maple cookies are irresistible
by Joan Sween The Man I Married and I finished setting up our booth at our town’s first winter indoor flea market. The good news was that the exhibition hall had big access doors so vendors could
drive in and unload right in front of their assigned space. The bad news was that until everyone had unloaded, the winter winds made it dangerous to touch anything metal with your tongue. Every

perused the items in the booth. In Minnesota there’s an unwritten rule that if you take a vendor’s free treat, you are obliged to carefully view his merchandise and think about buying something. We are taught that rule even before we’re out of diapers. And if the vendor is selling toilet brushes and all we have is a rustic outhouse, we DO NOT TAKE the free treat. When I got back to our booth, the event was opening to the public and it was finally

looked quite different. Back at our booth, the irresistible smell of maple cookies came floating up the aisle. Remember the movie, “The Ten Commandments,” where the last plague of Egypt came floating through the streets in green tendrils, taking out everyone’s firstborn? It was like that to me. When the maple fragrance floated up the aisle, I was wondering how many cookies I could barter

I zipped behind them, thrust my arm between their bodies, grabbed two cookies and made a quick getaway. Back again at our booth I saw a knowing look come over TMIM’s face. “Let me smell your breath,” he said. “You’ve been sneaking cookies!” I had no shame. I tried to talk him into going and getting a cookie for me. He refused. “Note to all single girls;” I muttered, “before saying ‘yes,’ find out if he will at least fetch a cookie for you.” For what seemed like hours, I watched the cookie booth until I saw the vendor head toward the restrooms. The Old Times
One of the oldest ornaments in our collection, this ornament is believed to have come from Germany with my great grandfather when he immigrated to the United States. It is made of glass beads and tubes held together by thin wires. The ornament is at least 158 years old. The ornaments on our trees are like a collection of memories of people, places and experiences.
Another example of a repurposed item on our trees. This medallion is taken from the hat of a French officer involved in the Iraq war. A doctor friend of ours who served in Desert Storm brought this back for our tree along with a medallion from a member of the Royal Saudi Army.
This is another of our oldest ornaments that came over from Germany with my great grandfather and is also in the neighborhood of 180 years old. The German blown glass is so thin that I half expect it to be reduced to a pile of dust each time I unwrap it, but it and a few others still grace our tree.

When Hmong people first began to settle in Minnesota (so like those semi-tropical mountains of Laos!), some friends of ours became very involved in helping them find ways to make a living. They did beautiful needlework with layered fabrics. We have about six examples on our trees, this being one of my favorites. The tassel strings are covered with glass beads.

Today our two trees are decked out in about 2000 incandescent and LED lights and somewhere around 1,200 ornaments from all over the world: England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Holland, Turkey, China, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Madagascar, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Mexico, Grenada, Jamaica, El Salvador, Peru, Chile, and still more. Each ornament on the tree (except for the mirrored disco balls I bury deep in the tree for extra sparkle) carries collected memories that get carefully taken out and put on display for our family and friends each year.

I’ve always loved rose-breasted grosbeaks. I used to watch two pairs come to our bird feeder. The males would gently feed the females before they would take any food for themselves. When I found this ornament about 17 years ago, I couldn’t resist!
This Swedish Dala Horse came home from Sweden with my parents when they made a trip to Scandinavia about 35 years ago. Hand painted in traditional Dala style, the horse is really meant to sit on a shelf or table, but he always finds his way to a branch on our trees. This horse is about 4 inches high and 5 inches long.
Nancy and I have a number of ornaments on our trees that we have exchanged with each other. This one, about 35 years old, is among our favorites. Nancy’s not blond, and I’m not buff, but we both love ice cream and visits to ice cream parlors, so this is a good fit.

I don’t know if they hang decorated Easter eggs on their trees in the Ukraine, but we do at our home. This was a gift some years ago, and given it’s fragile nature, it is remarkable that it still is around. Ornaments as fragile as this one tend to get hung in higher places on our tree to save any close encounters of the worst kind with our grandchildren, but they are Christmas tree lovers and never do anything to harm the ornaments.
This is one of our more precious ornaments, a 45-year-old piece of French hard candy. It hung on a tree in Aix en Provence one Christmas while a friend of ours was a student there. She could only afford candy decorations that year, and saved this one for us.

We have ornaments made of many different materials from capiz shells to brass, to wood, to cloth, and even to wax. This angel from Germany is made of to wax and has somehow survived summers in Minnesota and Colorado when temperatures have pushed to just over 100 degrees. Of course, all of the ornaments are packed away wrapped in paper toweling. This angel was a gift from my parents after one of several trips they made to Germany to visit relatives.

Mississippi River. Those fine homes are now the site of Little Falls’s Christmas at the Mansions. It is the largest fundraiser of the friends group that in 2006 took over the buildings’ upkeep and opened the Linden Hill mansions to the public. In 2014, the holiday tour runs November 28 to December 7. The theme is “Christmas In My Hometown.” “Charles was the lumberjack of the two,” said Pat Sharon, a Little Falls native who volunteers on the Linden Hill board. In contrast, Musser was the businessman of the two, neat and organized. Soon after the completion of his home, Weyerhaeuser married Frances Maud Moon of Duluth. She had captured a real prize in this strapping young man: His father, Frederick, even in 2014, ranks as the eighth richest man ever (adjusted for inflation). Shortly thereafter,

Every year, the friends group chooses a theme for the Linden Hill Mansions holiday tours. They also pull out the Musser collection of Christmas trimmings and ornaments. There are few if any Weyerhauser belongings at Linden Hill because the family moved away in 1920, and the Mussers then had ownership of both houses.
Musser fell for a family-oriented girl from New York, Sarah Walker. “The Mussers wanted many children. Their home sleeps 23. But it didn’t happen,” said Pat Sharon, tour guide. In 1910, they lost a son shortly after birth. To divert Sarah from her grief, the daughter of a physician, Alice, came to live with the Mussers. Alice became much more than a companion. She and Sarah were like daughter and mother. Years later when she lost her husband, Alice ran to Sarah in Little Falls for consolation. The Mussers eventually adopted a child, Mary. And a year later, to the very day, Sarah gave birth to the

The Old Times
When Laura Jane died, she left both mansions and their contents to the city of Little Falls. Contents included everything from Laura Jane’s fur coat collection and her family’s antique heirlooms to the humble bric-a-brac from her bathroom cabinets. Now those everyday items have a vintage appeal.
Bobby pins, hair spray, and a hair net were just a few of the hair care items left among Laura Jane’s personal effects.

piano and dance to swimming and tennis at no charge to her students. Laura Jane traveled widely and often. Many times, student lessons were suspended while their teacher vacationed in Hawaii with friend Margaret Hamilton, who had played the witch in “The Wizard of Oz” (1939). Fortunately for visitors, Laura Jane was something of a packrat. Both homes overflow with her various collections: Native American
artifacts, books, dinnerware, music boxes, her family’s antique furnishings, and Oz memorabilia. Spread throughout is also the humble brica-brac of daily life, which over the years has taken on the patina of vintage collectibles like old radios, Fuller brush purchases, toiletries, and an early whirlpool machine. Laura Jane died in 1989 at the age of 73, willing the homes to 2014 has brought Little Falls. The homes 6-16-09
