By the late 1940s, with other diversions competing for America’s entertainment dollars, Liberty’s readership dwindled. In 1950, the presses finally stopped rolling. And then, in 1971, they started up again, with the debut of Liberty: The Nostalgia Magazine. At first, the revived Liberty presented an entertaining mishmash of vintage articles. STAMPED in his memory
“Shin Asahi Mark,” a Japanese stamp pad, means “new sunrise,” a meaning reflected in the trademark on the box showing an illustration of the sunrise. “Rubber stamps are basically the same around the world,” Helmes said. “Mount the rubber on the tin and then put the tin over the holder.” The beginning of the English sentence on the front of the pad, “This stamppad is no need to put ink of the face of aboard by means of chemical action,..” inadvertently indicates that the translator’s first language is not English. (Photos by Les Broich unless otherwise noted)

In this “Artistamp Picture Set No 785,” Mickey and Minnie Mouse spread the fun of stamping for children. On the cover of the box, Mickey is stamping Minnie’s name. He holds the rubber stamp pad in his hand; the inkpad is close by. The picture was copyrighted by Walt Disney Enterprises.

by Virginia Broich SAINT PAUL, MINN.-Let’s go stampin’ with Scott Helmes. He owns 35,000 individual antique rubber stamps and 750 sets. In his well-organized Helmes collection, categorizes his antique rubber stamps into three groups: marker sets, education sets, and kids’/entertainment sets. “This division is my own way of classifying what I have bought. A marker set would be used to roll on a crate for manu-
facturing purposes. In the 1920s the crate didn’t absorb much ink,” he said. distin Helmes guishes his marker sets from others by their alphabets, numerals, and ornaments. “Their primary use was to help shopkeepers and similar entrepreneurs print signs for commerce. Printing was usually an expensive production for simple signs, and rubber stamps made a

“Our Gang” rubber stamps were based on the popular short films about a group of neighborhood children and their adventures first created by producer Hal Roach in 1922. This rubber stamp set, copyrighted in 1930, contains many of the original members of the “Our Gang” comedy series. Fans will remember Allen “Farina” Hoskins, Jackie Cooper, Norman “Chubby” Chaney, Bobby “Wheezer” Hutchins, and an American pit bull named Pete the Pup. In the 1920s, Farina became the most popular member of the gang and the most popular black star of the 1920s.

This children’s rubber stamp set contains instructions for use on top of the box. “Lay the ruler on the paper. Then ink the stamp by pressing lightly on the pad contained in the tin box and then press the stamp on the paper. “The Lone Ranger” picture printing set appealed to children who listened to the show on the radio. The Internet website, Essortment, bills “The Lone Ranger” program as “the greatest radio western.” The show was first broadcast on January 31, 1933. Originating from WXYZ in Detroit, Michigan, the program ran until August 31,1955.

The final category Helmes created, children’s sets, “have a primary purpose of being for children at play or leisure. Often they are related to the popular culture as found in newspapers and on radio.” This classification is exemplified in his “Famous Funnies Printing Set.”
Helmes categorizes this “Army and Air Force” printing set under “children.” With this kit, children made up their own battles with rubber stamps. Some of the images they could work with are: a heavy tank, an airplane, and soldiers in fighting stances. An inkpad and crayons are included in this set. (Photo by Scott Helmes)

The Old Times An early “Terminal Letter Stamping Set” used by At&T would be considered a marker set since it was used by business. A similar one sold for $15.51 in 2013 on eBay.
*The Antique Cellar in Paynesville, MN regretfully announces that Nancy and Ron Stebbins will be leaving the store to pursue other interests and to spend more time with their grandchildren. They will be selling their entire inventory of high quality antiques and collectibiles as follows:
This large rubber stamp, called a marker stamp, was used to roll an identifying mark on crates for commercial purposes in the 1920s. The primary use of marker stamps “was to help shopkeepers, and similar entrepreneurs, print signs for commerce,” Helmes said. Since printing small signs for shopkeepers was expensive, using the marker stamp helped keep down the cost. This marker was probably used by a grocery store.

In the winter of 1974, he found three drawers of stamps under a table at Apache Plaza in the City of St. Anthony, Minn. The sets contained every subject taught. He had begun doing concrete/ visual poetry in 1973. “I was intrigued by the possibility of using the stamps for the poetry,” Helmes said. He bought the rubber stamps for three dollars and the

How do you tell a bare lie from a bear lie? by Joan Sween It was 20 degrees below zero outside and (I swear) three below inside the mall. A month or so ago, the mall manager, Shirley, had tired of the dealers switching the temperature around, and, worse, leaving it set on high all night. She had put a lock box over the thermostat, set at a permanent 70 degrees. But my work partner and I were freezing. I called Shirley. “Shirley, we’ve got to turn the heat up; it’s freezing in here.” “No, it’s not,” she said, “the thermostat is set for 70.” “The mall’s got 14foot ceilings; all the heat is rising to the top. It’s three below down on the floor level, and every time a customer comes through the 2 ps t Sho Grea to get to y s st Ea almo from here! w y n A
door, we get a sub-zero blast.” “All right, I’ll stop by late-afternoon and check things out,” she said. “Meanwhile, you should be able to deal with a little chilliness.”
had a coffee slushy. I was muttering some heated (ha ha) comments about our mall manager when I called her again. “Shirley, it’s so cold in here the coffee is frozen. We’re going to start selling it as Chilly Cappuccino.” “Oh ha, ha, ha, ha!” she laughed delightedly. “You can’t fool me, Joan, I’ve gotten used to your sense of humor!” “I’m not making this up!” I said as she hung up, still laughing. Shortly thereafter we had another series of incidents. When customers pulled their warm hands from their pockets to pick up and examine a delicate glass goblet, it would shatter in many pieces due to the temperature difference.
It was 20 degrees below zero outside and (I swear) three below inside the mall. Chilliness! Lateafternoon! We were not Eskimos! I poured myself a cup of coffee. It should warm me up a little while I braced myself to call her again. The coffee poured strangely. It6-16-09 was half frozen. I
I called Shirley again. “We’ve got to heat the mall up; people are breaking crystal stemware right and left, just by touching it with warm hands.” “That’s a good one!” chuckled Shirley. “I have visions of the shop floor littered with glass--Not!” “It’s just like that!” I said. “I’ll bet you could be a success as a standup comic, you’re so inventive!” “I’m not making this up!” I shouted. “See you later this afternoon!” she giggled and hung up. My work partner and I sat huddled and shivering in our coats until lunch time, only to discover that our bag lunches had frozen solid. I had egg salad on the rocks and my

By Joan Sween partner had macaroni and ice chips. I called Shirley and reported this-emphasis on possible starvation. The conversation went pretty much the same. Her delight at my creativity. My insistence that “I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP!’ That did it! Something had to be done to make this woman understand our problem. I knitted my brows. I turned all my supposèd creativity loose. I got an idea and got on the phone one more time. “Shirley,” I whispered, “I have to be quiet so I don’t wake him up. and smeared egg salad and cheese all over the quilts. I’ve called Animal Control, but if he wakes up before they get here, we’ll be in big trouble. You’ve heard the old adage of a bear in a china shop? You might want to come and check the damage. Maybe while you’re here you could turn up the thermostat.” She let out a loud screech and shouted, “I’m on my way! Don’t wake up the bear!” Funny thing. She
