jewelry. But she also ran an early occasional shop. The shop gave the daughter an inkling that maybe this collecting deal could be more than a hobby. Maybe it could be a business founded on beautiful, collectible, and vintage objects. “The first thing I collected was dolls,” said Judge-Ims. “Even today, I’m a great picker for friends who collect dolls.” In high school, she wore vintage dresses and fur coats. She borrowed her mom’s junk jewelry. She remembers the day one of her mom’s necklaces broke in school. The beads rolled everywhere. The popularity of the garter bracelet dates back to the Victorian Era in England, named for the long reign of Queen Victoria from 1937 to 1901. Prince Albert, the German Prince who married the young queen in 1840, gifted Victoria with a garter bracelet and so started a fad. (Photo by Lorinda Judge-Ims)

The Old Times

In Victorian England, mourners twined a loved one’s hair into wearable jewelry like this brooch. In America, where the Civil War broke out, mourning jewelry took a different slant. Wives wove their own hair into watch chains so their husbands on the battlefield could have a memento of home. (Photo by Lorinda Judge-Ims)

The three brothers have overlapping interests when it comes to collecting, so it takes a keen eye—or a mom— to know where one boy’s collection stops and another one starts. The boys keep their wares on shelves in their bedroom (above and left). (Photo by Lorinda Judge-Ims)

The Old Times Judge-Ims’s parents, Larry and Arlene, still live in Illinois. But they travel north to visit their daughter and hang out with her and the boys by the glass cases containing her jewelry at the Antique Mall of Rogers in Rogers, Minn. That’s Maggie sitting on Arlene’s lap.

Out of those pieces he created watch necklaces. He still makes them and has added refrigerator magnets made from earrings to his output. That act of creation

The Victorian garter bracelet was so-called because of its resemblance to the garters used to keep hose, individual leggings, from gradually inching their way down the legs and pooling at the ankles. Thus the garter bracelet made a somewhat risqué, suggestive reference to a lady’s legs. (Photo by Lorinda Judge-Ims)

The Old Times

If this is a blizzard, it must be March

by Joan Sween The Man I Married would not let me drive the car to the mall for my workday. He insisted on driving me there in his truck and picking me up at the end of the day. “There’s going to be a blizzard,” he said. “You’ll drive in the ditch and freeze to death.” “You’ve got to be kidding!” I said. “Look outside. The sky’s a clear blue with no clouds.” I was tempted to mention that I thought I was a better ice and snow driver than he was, but decided to keep my mouth shut and save my marriage. “It’s clear now, but it’s going to get nasty around mid-afternoon,” he said. He was biting his lip. I could tell he was tempted to mention that once I got behind a wheel, I sometimes forgot where I was

going and often was in danger of getting from Oronoco to Rochester via Milwaukee, but he didn’t say anything. No doubt he was doing his bit to save his marriage. TMIM Anyway, dropped me off at the mall, safe and sound, and we had a pretty nice day--even sold the pricy R.S. Prussia chocolate set in booth 13. Halfway through the afternoon, though,

“There’s going to be a blizzard,” he said. “You’ll drive in the ditch and freeze to death.” big, fat snowflakes began to fall gently to earth, and our customers took to their cars to get home before they began hitting the earth with a thud. By ten minutes to closing time there was a white

out, TMIM had arrived and was telling us to wrap it up, and we were raring to get home. But there was one couple still shopping. The lady had her of arms full merchandise. “Would you like me to carry some of your selections up to the counter for you so your hands are free?” I asked sweetly. “That’s very thoughtful, but I’m okay,” said the lady. “If we can get a start writing your sales slips, we can get you checked out and on your way home sooner,” I said. “Oh well, we’re almost done,” she said, “it won’t take long to check us out.” I retreated to the service counter. My work partner looked out the glass doors and sighed. TMIM stamped his boots and hummed, “Let It Snow, Let It Snow,” under his

breath. Finally the lady and her husband came up to the counter, arms loaded with collectibles. It looked as though our pretty nice day was going to end with one more pretty nice sale. As they set their items down, we began grouping them and setting out a sales slip for each group. Then we began to write. “Why did you separate things out like that?” asked the woman. “We have to write a separate sales slip for each dealer,” I said. “These three items came from booth #4 and they go on one sales slip. These next two items are from booth 28, and we write a separate sales slip for vendor 28.” my “Well, goodness, here we are waiting to pay and leave,” the lady said.

Stillwater & Walnut make Top 10 list STILLWATER, MINN. & WALNUT, IOWA, Stillwater, Minn., a river town called “The Birthplace of Minnesota,” and Walnut Iowa, have been named to Fodor’s Travel’s 2015 “Top 10 Best Antiquing Towns in the U.S.” The Main Street of downtown Stillwater is home to five antiques dealer malls, each with multiple floors of goods from antiques to vintage, industrial, and mid-century modern. Find furniture, home décor, collectables, jewelry, art, coins, retro clothing, glassware and more. Those shops are: Staples Mill Antiques at 410 N. Main Street; Stillwater Antiques Mall at 101 S. Main Street; Our Antiques at 119 S. Main Street; American Gothic Antiques at 236 S. Main Street; and MidTown Antiques at 301 S. Main Street. In addition, there are a few specialty shops such as Let There be Light at 210 N. Main Street., showcasing repair and sales of hard-

to-find beautiful old light fixtures, and Black Letter Books with shelves of out-of-print or rare publications. Stillwater, located 40 miles east of the Twin Cities, has a population of over 18,000. Walnut, Iowa, located midway between Des Moines, Iowa, and Omaha,

Neb., has a population of under 1000, but the town, “Iowa’s Antique City,” boasts almost a dozen shops, markets, and malls, and puts on a show that lines the streets over Father’s Day weekend in June. The only other Midwestern town to be named to Fodor’s Top 10 is Galena, Ill. Most towns are located in

states on or near the Atlantic coast: Wiscasset, Maine; Millerton, N.Y.; Adamstown, Penn.; Buchanan, Va.; and Charleston, S.C. Hazel, Ky., and Clinton, Tenn., lie further inland, but Walnut, Iowa, is the only town on the list that is west of the Mississippi.

Local collectors host Antique Bottle, Advertising, & Stoneware Show & Sale

Antique bottles such as these will be for sale at the 44th Annual Minnesota Antique Bottle, Advertising, and Stoneware Show and Sale.

--PRESS RELEASE BLOOMINGTON, MINN.--The 44th Annual Minnesota Antique Bottle, Advertising, & Stoneware Show and Sale will take place Sunday, March 22, in the Knights of Columbus Building at 1114 American Blvd. in Bloomington, Minn., from 9:30 a.m. until

2:30 p.m. Admission is $5. Nearly 60 dealers from across the Midwest will join members of the North Star Historical Bottle Association for this special event. A huge variety of pre-1920 bottles and memorabilia from yesterday’s brewery, distillery,

saloon, barber-shop, country store, pharmacy and soda fountain will be offered for sale. Red Wing stoneware and a variety of antique advertising items, from beer trays to country store coffee and tobacco tins, will also be for sale. The North Star club is pleased to host this popular event again in 2015. More than 100 antique bottle and advertising shows are held across America

and abroad each year, but few bottle collecting clubs have hosted 44 such events. Patrons often remark that the diversity of antiques and collectibles offered at this show is amazing. Each year brings new dealers and attendance continues to grow. These numbers reflect the popularity of this event. As the economy improves, collectors continue to see antique bottles, advertising, and stoneware as good,
