Craftsmanship & patience A woodworker’s story
Ian Gale is shown working in his shop in Madison, Wis., where he was established from 1988 to 2002. “In the photo I’m restoring the carving on a 19th century chair,” Gale said. “I must have been about 38 then. Yikes!” (Photo provided)
by Les Broich ALMA, WIS.--Ian Gale was in his early twenties and looking, “to do something constructive that would be useful in a peacetime economy.” Although not a Quaker, he had attended Friends School in Moorestown, N.J. People there knew he was good with his hands and interested in woodworking. The father of a former classmate hosting a dinner for Italian-American Chisels might not be created equal, but each makes its own contribution to the perfection of a work. Gale does have some power tools, but he does most of his work by hand. (Photos by Les Broich unless otherwise noted)

“I made this piece from scratch in my Madison shop around 1988. It’s a quarter-size replica of an 18th century Sheraton china cabinet,” Gale said. The cabinet is made of poplar and veneered in satinwood and burl thuya. The trim is ebony and fiddleback mahogany. “It’s true to period construction methods,” Gale explained, “including individually glazed panes of glass in the doors as well as functioning locks.” The cabinet is 21¾ inches wide, 11 inches deep and 47 inches tall. It’s made in two pieces. The top cabinet section is 7½ inches deep. “Like another quarter-size replica I made,” Gale explained, “this type of piece would also have been used by sales staff to demonstrate the skill and styles of the cabinetmaker.”

The 19th century bible box fully restored. Gale was commissioned to restore a 19th century bible box made on the Isle of Mann. “It needed a complete restoration,” Gale said, “so I disassembled the box and made sure to label each piece to aid in reassembly after repairs are made.” Above is a good look at the box dissembled. He told Gale, “You’re learning. I’m teaching you everything I know. I have no secrets.” Gale noted, “Back then I could actually live on minimum wage.” “The first hole I drilled was in a 1760, hand-carved Chippendale,” Gale related. “I tried not to think about it.” Between 1960 and the 1980s, the Chippendale increased in value from $2000 to $80,000. A special moment occurred near the end of Gale’s apprenticeship. He and

A silence you could cut with a butter knife lengthened. Aunt Augusta glared down her nose and across her bosom at me. “Are you telling me,” she growled in deep tones, “that I do not know R.S. Prussia when I see it?” “Um… er… it’s a very good reproduction.” “Nonsense! It’s R.S. Prussia. Take it up to the counter and start wrapping!” When I rejoined Aunt Augusta, she was peering at a display of
antique match holders in a showcase. “Let me see that one,” she said, pointing. I removed it from the showcase and handed it to her to examine. “Ah,” she said. “Silver. Good. Wrap this up also.” “Excuse me,” I said, “but it’s marked ‘German Silver.’ German Silver is a shiny metal alloy that is not silver at all.” The silence was longer. The tone was even more frigid. “I am an expert in these things and it is not wise to contradict me,” she hissed. I wrapped up the match holder. I continued for the next half hour, to comment truthfully on her selections, though at times I felt I was taking my life in my hands. I wrapped up a molded plastic bracelet that she insisted was Bakelite. I wrapped up a pair of gold-plated sewing scissors that Aunt Augusta pronounced as solid gold. I wrapped up a plastic netsuke that Aunt Augusta almost burst her long-line bra explaining to me that it was pre-ban ivory. When she finally left, I was trembling with stress. I pulled a quilted toaster cover over my head, wrapped myself in an old muskrat coat, and hid in the dark equipment room. My work partner opened the door and looked in. “She thinks she bought valuable antiques,” I whimpered, “and it’s all my fault.” “Don’t be ridiculous,” said my work partner. “She bought what she wanted to buy. Now get out of there; you look silly.” © 2015 Joan Sween

The Old Times Gale restored the pediment, a triangular space forming the gable of a low-pitched roof, for a northeast Minneapolis home. “The pediment had four major splits running horizontally across it,” Gale explained. He also encountered numerous layers of white paint over the original colors. The restoration work began with removing the piece from its location over the door. “I repaired the cracks by filling the spaces with wood,” Gale said.

Perrella were examining a shattered leg on a 1780s Hepplewhite sideboard. Perrella wanted to know what, after six and a half years, Gale would do to repair it. The master agreed with the student. “I wasn’t a beginner anymore,” Gale explained. In 1980, Gale left Perrella and opened a shop of his own in
Moorestown. He worked at his craft and developed clientele in both public and private sectors. Over the years, Gale has realized restorations require patience. “When doing restoration work, a wait of six months is not a big deal,” Gale said. Even the weather can affect a project’s duration. “Things take longer to dry when it’s humid. Too much
Gale found about a dozen missing or damaged pieces of carving that needed to be restored. “I repaired the missing parts by gluing in blocks of wood where there were missing pieces of carving,” Gale explained. “Then, using my carving tools and files, I shaped the blocks to blend in with the existing carvings. I painted the restored carvings using the original colors I discovered below layers of white paint,” he concluded. The restored pediment was then returned to its original location over the door.

proposed fix can be successful. Gale said, “I’ve spent a lot of time fixing other people’s mistakes. They just didn’t know what they were doing.” As a restorer, Gale enjoys bringing a piece back to its original state. “Restorers won’t do x-rays and come up with gilding research,” he said. That’s for conservators in museums who “are responsible for the care and repair of museum articles.”
In 1988 he moved from New Jersey to Madison, Wis., and in 2007 relocated to Alma, Wis., on the Mississippi. Then Gale wanted to live in the country, so two years ago he left Alma’s Main Street for the Riecks Lake Park area north of town. He combined his home and shop in one structure. “It was time to build my dream home,” Gale stated. “An inheritance paid 70 percent of the cost.” His shop now occupies over 50 percent of his home. “This photo shows the top drawer of a four drawer Sheraton chest I made from scratch in 1986 or so,” Gale said. The piece is a quarter-size replica that measures 22 inches wide, 12 inches deep and 18¾ inches tall. Gale explained, “The carcass is made of poplar. It is veneered in birds-eye maple and rosewood. On top is a large diamond inlay of burl thuya wood.” The inside is fitted for jewelry and scarves. “Pieces like this were used by a cabinetmaker’s sales staff to take around the country as a sample of the work of the maker,” Gale related. The Sheraton, characterized by straight lines and graceful proportions, originated in England around 1800. Restoring Your Home? ClipThis Ad!

Xcentric Goods moves to White Castle
The inside of the former hamburger shop provides a spacious venue for displaying antique and vintage pieces. (Photos provided)
--PRESS RELEASE MINNEAPOLIS-The historic White Castle building at 3252 Lyndale Ave. S. in Minneapolis is now home to Xcentric Goods, an antique/ vintage shop that offers furnishings, jewelry, and fine art. Xcentric Goods was open for a year and a half just down the street, but the business outgrew its original space. When the White Castle building opened up, it was a perfect opportunity. Co-owner David Omer says, “We have more space, and it’s such a distinctive building. Everyone knows where it is and how iconic it is.” The structure was originally built as a restaurant in the White Castle chain in 1936— the eighth in the Twin Cities—and sat on a site on Washington
Avenue in Stadium Village near the University of Minnesota. In 1950, it was moved to Central Avenue and Fourth Street Southeast in the Eastgate neighborhood. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is one of a few historic buildings moved from its original location— appropriately so, since White Castle designed the structures to be portable. Since moving to 3252 Lyndale Ave. S. in 1984, it has housed a contracting firm and an accordion repair/ jewelry business. Co-owner Clark Miller says, “We wanted to pay homage to the history of the building.” Hence Xcentric Goods displays historic White Castle posters and photographs and sells vintage White Castle
Anoka shop owner celebrates two milestones --PRESS RELEASE ANOKA, MINN.— This winter Carolyn Smeaton, proprietor of Amoré Antiques in downtown Anoka, Minn., reached two milestones. December 2014 marked 20 years in business at 2008 Second Ave. N., and on January 21, 2015, she turned 80 years young. She and the shop are still going strong. Smeaton and her late husband, Neil, opened the shop on December 8, 1994 with three other couples. In
2006, they bought out their partners and became sole owners. Now 80, Carolyn still manages the 7800 square-foot shop and works several days each week alongside the 50 dealers who rent space and offer all kinds of antique specialties. She says “I love what I do. I meet people from all over the world.” When not running Amoré Antiques or promoting downtown Anoka and its history,

Besides all this, Owners Omer, Miller, and Blaine Bolden, along with two other dealers, market an eclectic mix of styles and periods and pride themselves on offering unique, offbeat pieces. Xcentric Goods is open from 11 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and from 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Offstreet parking is available.
Carolyn creates pieces for her 10 East jewelry line, featuring vintage beads and pendants. 10 East is available exclusively at the shop. Half of all sales are donated to children’s charities. Amoré Antiques is a woman-owned, family business and one of the oldest antiques shops in Anoka. It is open seven days a week. The Old Times
Standards for appraising personal property By Jim Billings Appraisal practice continues to tighten under pressures from federal statutes, going beyond that summarized in my article in Old Times several years ago. The Federal Trade Commission and Treasury, along with insurance companies, are tightening requirements for a qualified appraisal. These requirements include education, experience, designation from a professional appraisal organization, and continuing education.

What is an Appraisal? An appraisal is an opinion of value, “value” itself being an elusive term. Value relates to a particular situation or purpose: to insure or to donate? To replace? To sell/divide? To determine this, one must look at the market most appropriate for the situation. In a case of unset gems donated to the Smithsonian Institution (Anselmo v. Commissioner, 1983), the Tax Court found that the amount claimed should reflect prices paid by jewelers at the wholesale gems market, rather than by the public in retail situations.
than $5,000 must be substantiated by a qualified appraisal. For lesser amounts the donor still must have a basis for the valuation. As an appraisal is a legal document that might have to be defended in court, the appraisal must be undertaken by a qualified appraiser, one who has earned or demonstrated competence evaluated and officially recognized by a professional appraiser society. Three professional organizations monitor their membership’s qualifications for personal property appraisals. Each society requires credentialing from the Qualified Appraisal Appraisal Standards Generally a non- Board of the Appraisal cash deduction of more Foundation based upon Duluth’s Newest & Finest Multi-Dealer Mall

Privacy The Gramm-LeachBliley Act of 1999 allows the Federal Trade Commission to include appraisers as “financial institutions.” The Code of Federal Regulations demands that privacy be respected, as a doctor, lawyer, or accountant would keep all information confidential. In one case where the seller appraised an item at “fair market value” much higher than it could be sold for, the court required him to pay the buyer the difference. Reardon whether he thought the shop down the block would be interested in advertising. “Oh, I don’t think I’d go down there,” Reardon said mysteriously. It wasn’t long before a press release arrived announcing that Reardon had reached an agreement with Looking Glass owners Jen Demulling and Gwen Wright; in June they will be taking over the shop he opened in January 1991. The women have outgrown the shop they opened in 2013 and are glad to take over the business at 117 N. Cascade in Osceola, Wis. and the beautiful 19th century mercantile building Reardon bought and renovated in 1990. Reardon will show his wares in the basement while they take over the main floor.

chicken egg, with the larger end intended to hold a goose egg. The real egg cups to beat, however, are novelties and figurals. Even the most hard-
boiled collector cracks a smile when greeted by egg cups that pay tribute to such pop culture icons as Mickey Mouse, Snow White, Bugs Bunny, and those ever-purply Smurfs. The cups are a special hit with baby boomers,

conjuring up childhood recollections not that far in the past. Many are in traditional cup shapes, with the character likeness an applied illustration. The really good eggs, however, are figurals, often of heads (a natural), but sometimes full body depictions, such as “Noddy.” He’s the winsome scamp who now and then shows up in the Downton Abbey kitchen. Other popular themes are fairy tale and nursery rhyme favorites, animals, buildings, and vehicles such as toy trains. And, when Easter egg time rolls around each year, you’ll find a flock of chicken cups and a hutchful of bunny cups

on antiques dealers’ shelves. Giving these to wide-eyed youngsters each Easter—complete with an oversize chocolate egg—was a tradition in the early 20th century. Candy maker Fanny Farmer even made sure recipients knew where that delicious chocolate was coming from: its duck cups were emblazoned with the company name. In recent years, the
tradition of an annual Easter egg cup has been carried on by candy companies such as Cadbury’s. Once upon a time, long before the days of Egg McMuffins, breakfast meant a wellstocked and welcoming kitchen table— including eggs in their individual cups. Egg cups had folks starting each day with a smile. So this Easter morning, why not treat yourself to a leisurely breakfast? You’ve probably got at least one egg cup
