co-organizer of Dylan Days, “but for millions of people the word Hibbing will only escape their lips because of Bob Dylan.” The singer-songwriter wasn’t

Hibbing High School was built with mining money and was completed in 1924. A New York Times reporter called the sumptuous building a “palace in the wilderness.” Dylan graduated in May 1959 and immediately hopped a Greyhound bus, another Hibbing business, for Minneapolis.
Suzie Spitzenberger, Elk River, planned her vacation around Dylan Days, toting her portfolio of 24 portraits of the singer. Of her interest in Dylan’s work, she said, “I needed something to latch onto, and his music was there. Everything he did was wonderful.” Her favorite song? “Born in Time.”

One fan, Bill Pagel, moved to Hibbing and bought the house behind Dylan’s boyhood home, with hopes of someday buying the Dylan house and converting it to a museum. Pagle also owns the Dylan property in Duluth.
Natalie Goldberg put it, this generation’s Shakespeare. As Brown noted, for most people, Hibbing only exists as a marker in the singer’s past. Because of that, every year, throughout

You were a wayward traveler, and you came looking for Bob Dylan,” said Linda Stroback, Zimmy’s owner and Dylan Days organizer. The more famous a person is, the more rumors grow up around him. One rumor reports Dylan boasted to friends at the University of Minnesota that he had the biggest bar mitzvah Hibbing had ever seen. What can be documented is the location of the event, the Androy Hotel on Howard Street.

The Old Times
A fan visits the home where Dylan’s high school girlfriend, Echo Helstrom, grew up in what used to be the boondocks of Hibbing. Her family were hardscrabble Finns. Bob, Helstrom said, liked to come over and listen to her father’s record collection and sing songs around the campfire.
Dylan knew Red Rock Capital Advisors as L & B Café, his go-to spot for his favorite dessert, cherry pie à la mode. Echo Helstrom remembers the night she met Dylan. He was standing in the intersection and playing guitar in the snow. She went into the café and he followed. They talked for a while and discovered they liked the same music—music most people in Hibbing knew nothing about.

by Donald-Brian Johnson The lights are low. The shag carpet’s lush. The gleam from a crackling fireplace reflects off leather sofas and burnished wood. The drinks are cold, and the hi-fi’s humming. It’s the early 1960s, and the “bachelor pad” beckons. If you’re a fan of that TV phenom, Mad Men, the scene strikes a resonant chord. looks, photographed to maximum effect. When the time came to roll up the rug for a bit of pre-twist dancing, old favorites like The Three Suns (“Mamie Eisenhower’s favorite recording group”) and “Lawrence Welk And His Champagne Music” (“whether your party is for two dozen or simply two”) were just a platter-drop away. Album covers often featured exuberant partygoers dressed to the nines. For the men, skinny ties and
elegantly tailored suits. For the ladies, cocktail dresses, beehive hairdos, and sparkling jewelry. At bachelor pad parties, the guests put in an effort. Party records got the guys and gals talking. Sophisticates reveled in the selfeffacing stammer of rising young comic Bob Newhart and his “button-down mind.” A lot further down the good taste scale was Rusty Warren, whose racy songs and blushinducing comedy Torch Time with Gogi Grant. Gogi “reaches into routines elicited plenty the heart of the listener with warmth and sympathy.” $5-10.

The Old Times
When spectators go on parade Still Parade has offered a most unusual event—a parade that remains stationary while spectators walk around, in front of, behind, and sometimes even through it. Why a “stand still” parade? The town’s main street, sitting just off the banks of the winding Root River in southeastern Minnesota’s scenic Bluff Country, is about three blocks and change. If you’re going to have a parade in Whalan, this is really the only way to do it. “People love the Stand Still Parade,”

The first robin is no longer the harbinger of spring would have concentrated on the even greater pull of used merchandise laid out in a cold garage. Despite the danger, The Man I Married and I fling ourselves out into the chilly morning, heading for the first garage sales of the year. Naturally, there are cars parked, double parked, and abandoned in the middle of the street at every location. At the first sale, TMIM pulled partially into the seller’s driveway to let me off, intending to back out and park wherever he could find a space. The garage sale husband came running up, brandishing a bat, bellowing, “No
parking in the driveway!” “He’s just letting me off!” I holler back, leaping out of my seat. “Get off! Get off!” the man, snarled viciously thumping his bat on the fender of the truck. TMIM backed out with a screech, and the truck headed down the block with my purse dangling from the door handle. “What? Was he just letting you out?” said the man. “Yes!” I sputtered indignantly. “I hope you have insurance to cover the damage you did to the truck!” “All of these people make me a little

excitable,” said the man. “Don’t worry about the truck, this is a Nerf bat.” Throwing him a dubious look, I headed up the driveway and into the garage. Much of the soft merchandise was collected in brown grocery bags with prices for the whole bag. I started examining the contents of a bag to see what was in it. The garage sale wife rushed over, nudged me out of the way, and began pawing around in the bag. “This is a good one,” she said. “There’s quilt fabric and ribbons and some of this and a lot of these pretty things and all for two dollars.”

By Joan Sween The lady next to me started looking in another bag. The wife grabbed it, stuck her arm in and chirped, “This is another great bag. There are these lovely crocheted items and five pieces of porcelain and these spoons. Aren’t they lovely?” “I don’t know,” said the lady customer, “all I can see is your elbow.” “Oh, oh, oh, oh,” said the wife. “Sorry, sorry. So many people here, you know, I get a little excitable. You just look for yourself.” By now, TMIM had parked the truck and

was looking at a box of DVDs. “Hey, what’re you doing?” said a teenaged boy, shoving through the crowd and grabbing up the box. “Mother! You can’t sell my DVDs!” “Sweetheart, you went through your collection and said we could sell these.” “Yeah, well, that was before I saw all the people that wanted them!” He rushed back into the house, clutching his box of DVDs. “Let’s get out of here,” said TMIM, grabbing my hand and pulling me out of the mass of humanity like a cork from a wine bottle. by Joan Sween Spring gives birth to a movement that is more frightening than the bulls running at Pamplona, more frantic than squirrels racing each other up and down trees hoping to score.
