Route 66
Remembering “the mother road”
Mom collected this matchbook from The Town House Restaurant in Elk City, Okla. Mom saved postcards, matchbooks, and/or a matchcover from five of the eight states along the route; she’s missing California, Illinois, and Kansas. Route 66 Kansas cards are rare. because the highway went through only12.8 miles of the Sunflower State. U.S Highway 66, coined “the mother road” by John Steinbeck in The Grapes of Wrath, opened in 1926, connecting Chicago to Los Angeles. In 2005, when Mom discovered I was collecting Route 66 postcards, she sent me this map card. (Photos by Virginia Broich unless otherwise noted.)
by Virginia Broich MINNEAPOLIS, MINN--My mom always said, “If you have a postcard or matchbook, we went there.” She collected these treasures during our family trip across Route 66 in our Buick Roadmaster to visit my paternal grandparents in California in 1953.

To matchbook collectors, a combo is a matchcover paired with any other form of advertising from the same establishment. Mom saved both a matchcover and a postcard from the Tewa Motor Lodge in Albuquerque, N.M., where we stayed in 1953. The lodge opened in 1946 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

The birth of the Boyer Hotel Court preceded use of the word motel. At this point, the expression hotel court was a change from tourist court but had not yet evolved into the word motel, according to the website, Route 66 University and Souvenir Gallery.

Cline’s Corners created a map for their matchcover. There is an important distinction between a matchbook and a matchbook cover. The matchbook includes all the matches in it. When the matches are eliminated, the flattened piece of light cardboard is called a matchcover. Most collectors collect matchcovers because they are easier to store and have less risk of damage. Cline’s Corners still exists today along Interstate 40 (once Route 66).

The Old Times
This advertising postcard, one half of a combo Mom saved from Rice’s Dining Salon in Amarillo, Texas. was recommended by her favorite food critic, Duncan Hines. The restaurant’s motto was, “If it swims, we have it.”
Once again, using her trusty Duncan Hines’ restaurant guidebook, Adventures in Good Eating, published in 1935, Mom discovered The Feed Bag Restaurant in Mesa, Ariz. The matchbook she collected boasts, “Recommended by Duncan Hines.”
saved both a postcard and matchbook from the Tewa Lodge. Among collectors, these are called a combo. On the back of the postcard, the lodge advertises “24 units. All tile baths, telephones and thermostatically controlled heat in every room.” To find good places to eat along our way, Mom carried her trusty red and white Duncan Hines guidebook, Adventures in Good Park Rapids Eating. “We took it everywhere,” Mom said. If a restaurant was recommended by Duncan Hines, a traveling salesperson turned food critic, the eatery was one of the best. “We never ate at a fast food place. That’s why we never got sick,
A matchbook, the other half of Mom’s Rice’s Dining Salon combo. The back of the matchbook has a map that places the restaurant smack dab in the middle of the Texas Panhandle. According to Joe Sonderman, author of Route 66 in Texas, it is now a map to nowhere; neither the building nor the restaurant still exists. The restaurant’s marquee with over 5,000 bulbs and a leaping neon swordfish at the top are now mere memories.

coming or going on our trip to California,” Mom said proudly. In Mesa, Ariz., we stopped and ate at a western dining room called The Feed Bag. On the matchbook Mom saved from that restaurant were the words, “Recommended by Duncan Hines.” My sister remembers that Mom was always looking for the Duncan Hines sign and said, “That was how she decided on a restaurant. While we couldn’t afford to dine in such establishments often on the trip, Mom would spot a road sign or use her guidebook to pick one hundreds of miles

Mom saved these leaflets from Clifton’s Restaurant, located in downtown Los Angeles near the original terminus of Route 66. A developer has been revamping the building. On January 31, 2015 the restaurant’s red neon lights lit up Broadway. There’s a sign above the entrance that states, “LIVING HISTORYCLIFTON’S-ESTABLISHED IN 1932.” Our family has been part of this history! (Photo by Virginia Broich)

The Old Times
The beginning: This postcard was the first my mom collected on our trip along Route 66. The building was “rocked” in and converted into Rock View Court in 1953, just in time for our family to stay there! The motel was demolished in 1966.

The end: My family gathered at Clifton’s Restaurant in Los Angeles, Calif., at the end of our journey to visit with my paternal grandparents. All seven of us made the trip from New Jersey, along Route 66, to California and back, thanks to Dad’s impeccable driving and a few drive-in theaters. Pictured left to right in the background are my dad, my brother, and my paternal grandparents. In the foreground around the table are (left to right) my uncle, my maternal grandmother, my mom, my sister, my two cousins, and me, the author, with ringlets in my brown hair and a big smile on my face.

I had priced it $900. “Is this for your collection?” I asked. “No, my best friend since college is moving to Minnesota and I want a special housewarming present for her.” “Does she have a large majolica collection?” I asked. “Uh… no… she collects leopards, and it’s hard to find any these days, other than the little rubber kids’ animal toys. She’ll be thrilled when she sees this.” I wrapped her purchase, charged her card, and smiled her off to her car. “I’m glum,” I announced to my work partner, “because a really fine piece of majolica is going to take its place in a leopard collection.” Later, a woman came to the counter Duluth’s Newest & Finest Multi-Dealer Mall
