them, comb their hair, and make them as presentable as possible, and we would sell them in our shop.

They were a little Red Cross nurse, and a baby doll. The demand for them was so great, my father had to work day and night to fill the orders. This helped them through the most difficult times.

Her “Scarlett O’Hara” was the first doll licensed as a book/movie tie-in. Such Hollywood stars as skater Sonja Henie and child phenomenon Margaret O’Brien saw themselves reenvisioned as dolls, while a World War II series paid tribute to women in the service. We assured her we had more and smiled as she left. As another customer approached the counter, Sharon quickly moved to the back of the shop to put the remaining bag in the microwave. The next customer was a man and his fouryear-old daughter. The man put a pile of collectible valentines on the counter. The top one was particularly nice with a delicate honeycomb heart foldout. “I want this one,” said the little girl, grabbing the one on top. “No, Cecily,” said the man, taking the valentine. “That’s a surprise for Mama. We have to keep it nice. Let go of it, please.” “No!, said Cecily, and gave a tremendous backwards yank, ripping the valentine in half. I set the valentine aside and wrote up the remaining undamaged ones. (We don’t charge for accidents.) Just then, Sharon came up from the back with a freshly-popped bag of popcorn, and set it on the far end of the counter. “Popcorn!” shrieked Cecily and ran for the bag. “No, Cecily! That’s not yours,” said her father, diving for the bag. A tussle ensued, the bag ripped, and popcorn flew in the air like a geyser. He was a nice man; he offered to sweep it up, but we insisted we would do it. With only one

Then we watched in growing despair as we recorded and wrapped her purchases and she ate all the popcorn. “Oh no!” she said. “Look, I’ve eaten all your popcorn. You can’t believe how hungry I was! Finally, when a customer asked to have a case unlocked at the rear of the shop, near our cubby-hole of a kitchen, I ducked in, and finding two bags of microwave popcorn, I thrust one into the microwave. The next time Sharon went that way, she snagged up the popped bag and carried it to the front counter. We opened the bag, hungrily, hoping it would hold us off until one of us could run for our lunches. A nice-looking customer in a pretty sun dress approached the service counter with her arms full of purchases. We started to write sales slips and wrap fragile items. “Popcorn!” she exclaimed “Do you mind if I have a few? I skipped lunch and I’m

(Photo by Leslie Piña, from Moss Lamps: Lighting the ’50s by Donald-Brian Johnson & Dr. Piña, Schiffer Publishing.) During a Moss factory tour, Johnson noticed “a stack of black and white sample pictures of Moss lamp models. For furniture shows, the factory would often only make a display piece. Then, if there was interest, they would put it into production. That’s why ‘one-of-akind’ Moss lamps literally do exist.”

Post-war exuberance in design and manufacturing encouraged the use of conversation pieces in the home— often in the form of bold, outsize, angular lamps. At roughly the same time, Danish Modern encouraged streamlined minimalism, natural materials, and earth tones. Since the middle of the 20th century was a time of innovation in American design, many

manufacturers of table lamps took an anything goes approach. As Jan Lindenberger writes in Lamps of the ’50s and ’60s (Schiffer): “New materials and production techniques developed during the war era were readily available for new commercial purposes”-including lamps, which Lindenberger says came to “represent an era of hope, modernism, and faith that science and technology had stepped in to create a bright future for the hardworking American family.” Materials included fiberglass, spun glass, ceramic, Lucite, Plexiglas, and more. A few brand name makers such as Moss and Reglor inspire specialized collectors today. Reglor lamps often featured matched sets of plaster bases,

Beer collector show on tap --PRESS RELEASE MAPLEWOOD, MINN.--Hundreds of breweriana enthusiasts will gather at the Aldrich Arena in Maplewood, Minn., on Saturday, October 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the annual Guzzle ’N Twirl Show & Sale sponsored by the North Star Chapter of the Beer Can Collectors of America. This beer-lover’s show and sale is one of the largest in the Midwest, drawing some 150 dealers from 2 ps t Sho Grea to get to y s st Ea almo from here! w y n A

across the country. They will bring a vast assortment of beer collectibles, ranging from pre-1900 beer bottles, mugs, glasses, and signs to newer neon lights. Trays, openers, kegs, cases, coasters, and corkscrews new and old will be offered for sale as well. If it was produced by or for an American brewery, especially the past and present breweries of the Midwest, this is the place to look for it. Chairman Dave 6-16-09 Wendl says, “Be it a

pre-Prohibition beer tray or a glowing neon light for behind the bar, collectors are likely to find that special beer collectible at Guzzle ’N Twirl.” There will be no beer for sale at the event. The Aldrich Arena is located at 1850 White Bear Avenue in Maplewood. Admission, $5. Call Dave Wendle at 651-731-9573 or visit www. northstarchapter.com for more information.
