A proud moment. Ruth Klossner grew up on a dairy farm and has loved cows most of her life. It’s natural, then, for her to collect anything related to cows. Here she is with her Grand Champion cow, Klossner Princess Delight, in a photo taken only a few days after she won the Championship of the Registered Holstein 4H Show at the Minnesota State Fair in 1966. beanie babies, CDs, banks, ads, and salt and pepper shakers,” Klossner said. Other groupings are stuffed animals, paintings, books, cups, tee shirts, mooing cookie jars, and a mooing rug. Each cow-related item is numbered to coincide
These framed de Laval cows are quite collectible. Klossner values each at $100. He patented an early milking machine in 1894 and invented the first centrifugal milk-cream separator. (Photo by Les Broich)

The Old Times
Tippifina, valued at over $6000, is named for Klossner’s friend, Tippi Hedren, best known for her role in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 film The Birds. Hedren and Klossner became friends in the late 1990s when Hedren and her family stayed with Klossner while the movie star served as Grand Marshall of the centennial celebrated by the nearby town of Lafayette, Minn., where Hedren had lived until she was six. The cow had belonged to Hedren since 1951, when she married Peter Griffith and the couple had received the statue as a wedding present. When Hedren saw all of Klossner’s cows, she decided to leave Klossner this special cow in her will. Later, she decided she not to wait, so she shipped the cow to Klossner, for whom Hedren’s friendship, as well as the cow, is priceless. (Photo provided)

with a catalog she keeps on her computer. Klossner’s antique cow items are mixed among the ones she’s received recently. One of her antiques includes a set of Swedish de Laval cows. “Worth 100 bucks a piece,” Klossner guessed. The de Lavals are both aluminum and cardboard. “I have all but an Ayrshire de Laval cow.” A Japanese celluloid cow comes from the 1930s. “Celluloid was a precursor to plastic and very delicate,” Klossner said. “There are not too many because they were easily broken.” In 2003 for $72 on eBay, she bought a collectible Swiss Steiff brown cow made in Germany. Someone in Great Britain was selling it.
Tippi Hendren, actress and animal rights activist, with her sister Patty by her side, tried out Klossner’s fully refurbished 1950 Ford Model 8N “Mooseum” Ford tractor. (Photo provided) This is how Klossner’s 1950 Ford Model 8N tractor looked when she bought it at auction. (Photo provided)

These cows are made of celluloid and are therefore rare. “Celluloid was a precursor to plastic and very delicate,” Klossner said. “There are not many because they are easily broken.” The third cow, dating to the 1920s, is a rattle, which makes its survival of over 80 years an even greater achievement. Klossner’s database reports she bought four of the cows on separate occasions in 1993 and 1994 for $5 to $22. The fourth from the left was a gift from a friend. (Photo by Ruth Klossner)
In 2006 one of Klossner’s friends brought her this Chinese banner from Hubei, China. It has a certificate with it that says, “This piece of antique belongs to the antiques that can be sold. Yichang Museum (Yichang Administrative Offices of Relics) assures its authenticity and gives permission to bring it out of the country. This piece of antique comes from the Three Gorges Dam Site-Zhong Bao Island.” The certificate has a seal stamped on it. (Photo by Ruth Klossner)

Elsie the Cow peeks out from the back of a shelf in Klossner’s home. Elsie became a mascot for the company named after Gail Borden (1801-1874), who in 1856 patented a way to process condensed milk to prevent spoilage. The cow began her advertising career in 1936 and was impersonated by a live cow, a registered Jersey heifer, at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, where Borden was displaying its Rotolactor, a rotary milking parlor. Other Elsie items on the shelf are playing cards, companion mugs of Elsie the Cow and husband Elmer the Bull, an ice cream sundae dish, and several glasses. “I have some originals,” Klossner said. On July 10, 2015, the Records Team Management from the Guinness Book of World Records informed Klossner that she is now the Guinness World Records title holder for the largest collection of cowrelated items. Klossner said, “The previous record, set just a month ago by a woman from Melbourne, Australia, was 3,000+. Before that, the record was 2,600+.” Klossner’s collection held more

Klossner bought a painting and then realized it was similar to one in the Friesian history book she owned. “The Clothilde cow family herd was in New York around 1900,” she said. The Old Times
It would have been a wonderful spot if I had owned a tricycle by Joan Sween I had accumulated a collection of about two dozen sterling tea balls, holding them back until I felt I had enough to make a nice display. They all had the little hook and chain to anchor them to the rim of the tea pot, and all hinged open in order to fill them with loose tea leaves. However, after that they were fantastically shaped in little houses, churches, stores, and garages. The most impressive were round, and carved and embossed with elaborate flowers, figures, rococo designs, and heads of famous people. “Where are you going to display those?”

said my work partner Cindy. “I have figured out the perfect place,” I said. “See the big space over my showcase? It’s about four feet from the top of that to the ceiling. I’m going to suspend my tea balls there.” “Lucky you,” said Cindy. “I wish I had something high like that where I could put my Victorian tricycle; dang kids keep riding it into things.” I got busy tying clear nylon monofilament to the hook on each tea ball and hanging them dangling from little staples spaced evenly along a dowel. I affixed the dowel to the ceiling and stood back to

She didn’t like it as well as she thought. “It kinda seems like something big, like an antique tricycle, would work better up there, don’t you think?” asked Cindy. “This is going to work!” I said through clenched teeth. I then put the key ring up on the top cup hook that was guaranteed not to move. The next customer asked to see a

I took a long clothes hook, such as they use in stores, and lifted the dowel down. The dowel tipped sideways, all the monofilament swung in a bunch and all the price tags twirled themselves together. It took me a while to untangle everything, and it turned out the woman didn’t want the church one at all. I could see that I would have to revise my system. I put the dowel back up, untied the tea balls from the dangling monofilament, tied a key ring at the
