by Linda Simpkins

Matti models an 1890s evening gown, which calls for an elliptical hoop skirt creating a flat front and extended in back to help support a large bustle with its own supporting cage. The extensive material required suited post-Civil War prosperity and accentuated a woman’s waist and S-shaped figure.

Transported to the 21st century, Jane Austen—and, no doubt, Cranford author Elizabeth Gaskell, whose Miss Mattie opened a tea shop--certainly would approve. Hannah and Matti Mae, eldest sisters as close as Jane and Elizabeth Bennett, open a millinery shop and end up hosting customers from around the world.

The American colonial dress on the left has panniers attached to the bodice. The dress on the right, with a shorter bodice and a slimmer skirt, is based on drawings from the 1780s. Complementing her dress, women of the time wore big hair and a big dinner plate hat. (All photos provided)

Matti and Hannah call this the Li’l Ren, as in Little Renaissance. The model of this miniature Renaissance court dress is two years old. “For her birthday, her parents were giving her a party, and she had a doll with a dress like this, so we were commissioned to make one for her.” The little chemise has machine embroidery on the hem, wrists, and neckline. The dress is most in demand for flower girls at Renaissance-themed weddings.

Dress-Up

Cont. from page 1

The embroidered taffeta with a chenille velvet dress Hannah models reflects a 30-to-40 year period of fashion in the mid-17th century when bodices came to a dramatic point. The big bell sleeves of Henry VIII’s era were out; straight, tight sleeves were in. At the top, a ruffled collar appears in a dramatic puff. Over 600 beads adorn the bodice, skirt, and puffs of the sleeves. It would not have been unusual for the ruffle to have been beaded as well. This dress ended up being sold to a fan in the suburbs of Tokyo. “The crazy thing was, a friend of ours was teaching English over there. He walked down the street and saw this picture in the window.”

Once financially independent, they marry the men of their dreams. Matti’s Millinery & Costumes grew out the sisters’ childhood playtime. Matti, in particular, had always liked to play dress-up and be, as Hannah put it, the princess. After much younger sister Gabby came along, Matti liked to dress Gabby up as the great lady, and Matti would play her maid. One day 17-yearold Matti realized Gabby did not have a hat to go with her outfit and was determined she should not suffer such deprivation. So Matti cut up a cereal box, made a cardboard frame, covered it with a piece of velvet salvaged from an old cape, adorned it with a feather from a feather duster, and presented Gabby

The dress that launched Matti’s Millinery. After six months producing hats and spotty sales, Matti sat down at a used sewing machine to make the Civil War dress they’d always dreamed of. Their first historical reproduction dress, it came complete with a cape and a diamond shaped hat with an ostrich feather. A week later, Hannah took pictures, listed it on eBay, sold it to one customer and got an order for another one just like it, and they knew their business had entered a new era.

Jane Austen era Regency outfits. The lady’s ball gown features Grecian lines, an empire waist, a pippet--a thin, slim stole or shawl,--and a turban headpiece. The gentleman wears rather tight, fallfront breeches, named for the flap in the front (the zipper had not yet been invented). Breeches were often made in a fashionably nude color out of chapskin, something fairly supple with a little bit of give. Sometimes men would soak their breeches and then put them on so the breeches would form to their skin as they dried. His wool frock coat with a double-breasted front features a high collar. A cravat tied round his neck tucks in above the buttons, and his cut-away jacket shows the vest underneath. The narrow shoulders add to the fitted look.

This cotton Abigail colonial dress of the 1760s and 1770s, named for Abigail Adams, features lots of lace and ribbons appropriate for a woman in a wealthy household. In the 18th century before the French Revolution, women wore fairly bright colors. The sleeves had to be below the elbow to be considered modest. This girl is not wearing full panniers, which would have accented her waist by adding material on each side over the skirt. She is wearing a dinner plate hat made out of straw, flat with a shallow crown. The ribbon tied beneath her chin keeps the hat on her head, a practical and pretty accent. In colonial America, cotton was an expensive cloth. Eli Whitney’s cotton gin, which separated the seeds from the picked cotton, didn’t arrive until 1794. Woolen or linen dresses were more common and less expensive because sheep and flax were quite prevalent throughout the colonies. Typically, women didn’t have the money, the resources, or the time to make a more elaborate dress. Most of them, even the wealthy, had to work, at least around the house, so they needed a more practical garment, without cumbersome, large skirts. A lot of them would layer petticoats. The French court, by contrast, was very opulent at the time.

Matti models a movie-remake dress from Jane Austen’s Persuasion, the one worn by Phoebe Nicholls as the heroine’s older sister, Elizabeth Elliot, in the Amanda Root version. “One of our best customers ordered it from us.” This mauve colored Renaissance gown is made of an overdress and an under chemise suitable for a member of the middle class, perhaps a merchant’s daughter, or for a servant in an upperclass setting such as a castle. The full dress laces up at the front bodice, and its skirt is open, split, to reveal the underdress. The underlying chemise gown has long sleeves, and its skirt is floor length. “It’s sort of a nightgown with puffy sleeves and a drawstring at the collar. A lot of Renaissance women would wear the chemise as a nightgown and then put their overdress on top of it when they got up in the morning.” The model is wearing bracers on her forearms out of fabric matching the overdress, and she’s got a little headband on.

This Edwardian suit was made from a modern jacket by adding detail on the collar and flaps. A hobble skirt like this typically had something binding around the knees and was made to be really tight. Designers would make the skirt only so wide, forcing women to mince their steps. The hat, which elongates her figure, gives her added height and completes the outfit. “This is one of the largest hats we’ve ever made.” Cont. from page 4

in her pockets. This creative outlet and modest financial success gave Matti an unprecedented feeling of accomplishment, but without Hannah, it is doubtful Matti’s Millinery would have gone global. Encouraged by their parents, who had homeschooled the girls

and taught them that experience can be as good a teacher as a textbook, Matti and Hannah called in a friend to teach Hannah how to market their hats on eBay. Six months later, the girls had grossed about $250 and, thrilled as they had been with every sale, admitted that amount was neither a good return on their time nor enough to

This is not just another 17-yards-of-fabric 19th century dress but is modeled after one worn by the Katherine Pierce character from the television series Vampire Diaries. “It’s basically your 1870s gown. It’s got a little bit of a bustle and a train, yards of pleating, pleated ruffles, and Venetian lace, almost a corded lace, very ornate and very thick. A heavily sewn lace, instead of being delicate, it’s a thicker lace, re-embroidered, very thick. It is commonly seen on window dressings and pillows.”

launch them into adulthood. So one morning Matti, armed with a garage sale sewing machine and a swath of lining taffeta purchased at 40 cents a yard, announced that

During the crinoline period of the 1860s, hoops belled out all around a woman’s legs, giving her great freedom of movement but requiring as much as 25 yards of fabric. The velvet-flocked ball gown on the left has five yards of fabric, the minimum required. This “show stopper,” as Matti calls it, is popular for Gothic events in red and black, green and black, purple and black, or white and black. It calls for some 60 yards of trim and has six layers of ruffles. They use a sewing machine to attach ruffled lace, which comes in a strip. The ball gown at right features a higher waistline, making the skirt even more prominent. These gowns are slightly off the shoulder, the style for evening. “They did not show a lot of cleavage; that’s why you see fichus and shawls around the neck. And heaven forbid you see the woman’s ankle.” The white ball gown is made out of lace, 17 yards of fabric; the skirt has three layers, with flowers added all over the gown and matching ones in the model’s hair--“everywhere they could put them, basically.” This gown ended up in Japan, where it is a fad to dress up in costumes taken from American and European history.

February 2016

It’s a new kind of bridal party! Four friends who got engaged and were getting married in four months invited more friends to dress up and celebrate together. In front is a Scarlett O’Hara barbecue dress. The gold and burnt orange dress is a classic Civil War style in a jacquard, which is cotton based, is a little bit like drapery material, and a lot of times has weaving in it with a pattern. “It is ideal for Renaissance and Civil War dresses because is not as flimsy and holds up well. It is actually fairly simple but elegant.” The blue and white stripe dress is a silk plaid. Hannah, in the wedding dress, is wearing an ivory taffeta with ivory Venetian lace around neckline and skirt. “We wanted to make that because we have a lot of brides who want it for their wedding. Even if they are not having a vintage wedding, they just like the look of it.”

“Our younger sister Gabrielle wanted a modern take on a 1950s dress. It has a ’50s shape, a halter top, and a sweetheart, gathered neckline, and the skirt is flared liked the ’50s but has a little bit of train in back. The dress has more the high-low look you find today.”

today she was going to sew that Civil War dress they had always talked about. A week later Hannah took a photo of a model wearing the dress, complete with a cape and a hat all made in matching fabric, and posted it online. Soon, two buyers were vying for the same dress, bringing them two sales, one for that dress Hannah’s flower girl wore a linen eyelet dress in and one for another just yellow with red Mary Jane shoes. Hannah had fun coming up with her own 1950s style wedding ensemble. She found the shoes, which are actually saddle shoes, online. “They’ve the got straps on them and little details in brown and red and chunky 1½-inch block heels. They were just perfect.” The dress she made after a visit to a bridal salon. “We found one with a classic ’50s sweetheart neckline and with a full rounded skirt. I decided to make the same dress only shorter. I started with an ivory base for the skirt and the bodice, and then an ivory tulle, then a mocha tulle, and then I corded lace that had a varying champagne-and-ivory color going on. Around my shoulders I have a bit more tulle, creating a classic ’50s shawl, and I have the ’50s bird-cage veil. The original gown was a lot like Grace Kelly’s and gorgeous but way out of my budget.”

The Old Times

What was once the nursing cottage at Regional Treatment Center in Fergus Falls, Minn., provides a beautiful Tudor style backdrop to a Renaissance fashion shoot.

Mattie models a Renaissance gown, complete with French hood, suitable for King Henry VIII’s court. The gown consists of a lot of separate pieces, the main four being a bodice that laces up the back, two skirts, and a chemise underneath. The bodice is fully boned. The oversleeves come off. This style from the early 16th century has a flat front or conical look.

Hannah, herself bedecked in Renaissance fashion, dressed her Bassett Hound, Wellington, up to model this elegant cavalier doggie jacket at a pet costume contest. She gave him the credit. “He did win, although he didn’t have a whole lot of competition. I think he knows which side is his good side.”

point in the business. The sisters share in the pressures of meeting deadlines to turn out orders for Halloween or Mardi Gras or Civil War re-enactments. Matti’s specialties include researching fashions, from medieval to the 20th century, down to a detailed understanding of differences between classes and positions at court. Two years ago, Matti designed her own wedding dress in 1930s

This taupe colored gown of shantung, a faux silk, is trimmed in black chiffon. With the turban headpiece and full train, this elaborately styled gown suits the mid-Regency period, 1815-1820. Older women preferred darker or more mature colors. “You would see browns, anything that looked a little bit more wealthy.”

Hannah and Matti’s flair for the dramatic gave rise to these 16th century, Italian Renaissance fantasy costumes. He is wearing a jerkin with a muffin top or hat. She’s got on a simple, Italian Renaissance dress with her hair up in a snood. “We like to play board games. He was representing one of the characters at a Board Game Geek Convention.”

Matti took apart every seam of a taffeta, bighuge-puffy-sleeves 1980s prom dress, and reconstructed it completely to create this Civil War-era ball dress for the Christmas holidays. The black lace and black velvet accents, the ruffles on the neckline and above the sleeves, were addons.

I lied. But I love you anyway.

You must really love me!” Gearing up for sweetheart sales, we dusted our shelves, hung hearts and cupids all over the mall, set out a plate full of frosted heart cookies and a bowl full of candy kisses, and made ourselves as pretty as possible. We were all set to receive lovers when two walked in. They

He set the fruit jar on the service counter with a thump; it was three-fourths full of change. “There’s our valentine!” he announced with pride. “Oh, Jimmy, you’re so adorable,” she giggled. “With inspiration like you, Sweetie, I

could climb mountains,” he cooed. Sweetie tore her eyes away from Jimmy and turned to me. “We’ve been saving our pocket change all year,” she said. “And now we’re going to spend it on one perfect valentine present for the two of us.” “Seventy-five dollars and sixteen cents,” Jimmy reported proudly. “He’s a genius at math,” Sweetie practically swooned. “What a wonderful idea,” I said. “You two go look for what you’d like, and we’ll guard the coins.” Off they went, arm in arm. As time passed, we could hear them talking in loving tones. After some time, they had apparently split up and we could hear them calling sappily back and forth. After another stretch of time, they both approached the service counter from different directions.

Jimmy plopped down a modest-sized wall-mount sign that said “Coors Light” in neon and had a figure of a lizard in green neon wrapped around it. “Isn’t that perfect?” he asked. “The green lizard stands for your degree in biology and ‘Coors’ is made in Colorado where we’re going to have our honeymoon!” Sweetie wrinkled her nose in distaste and said, “It’s a beer sign.” She lifted her prize up to the service counter. It was a McCoy clown-head cookie jar. “It’s perfect,” Sweetie said. “A clown stands for happiness, which we both will have all the years of our marriage.” “It’s a cookie jar,” Jimmy said with a stony expression. “I don’t like cookies.” “You told me I make wonderful cookies!” said Sweetie. “I lied,” said Jimmy. “Oh yes? Well I lied too when I said you

Come on, let’s go. We don’t need a gift, we have our love.” They left. We swept up the cookie jar and dropped their coins into the cash register. Valentine’s Our Day present? The price of the cookie jar exactly equaled the total of their coins! © 2016 Joan Sween

could drink beer in the living room on game days. I hate beer!” “Not half as much as I hate cookies!” shouted Jimmy as he dashed her cookie jar off the counter and on to the floor with a smash. Nobody breathed for two minutes. The first sound was Sweetie taking a deep breath. “Oh Jimmy, Precious, do you love me that much?” “I love you a hundred times more than a cookie jar,” he declared loudly. “I’d smash a million cookie jars to prove I love you!

by Joan Sween It was February, the month for lovers, and the month that usually delivered good sales figures to antique malls because people were looking for something charming and oldfashioned. Actually, I can’t figure that out. Whether you’re young and in love or old and still in love, wouldn’t something charming and new be more suitable? I mean, doesn’t an oldfashioned gift murmur, “It’s been good so far, Kiddo, but I’m not guaranteeing the future?” Oh, well, we never look a valentine sale in the teeth, no matter how old because we know a woman will be thrilled that a man thought to go shopping for a present. The present itself is immaterial. If she is truly in love, a woman will open her valentine present and shriek in delight, “A new Mizuno Pro Catcher’s Mitt!
