STRIKING VINTAGE GOLD
by Linda Simpkins APPLE VALLEY, MINN.—Deb Haupt has been waiting for this to happen. After years looking in old books to see if somebody had stashed money away there, the owner of Haupt’s Antiek Market picked up a bargain worth thousands. And she almost flipped it too fast. Deb and Greg Haupt have been combining business with pleasure for years now. First it was leading buying trips to Europe. Since their daughter moved to New York City two years ago, they have been making the drive east to hang out with Kristy and to comb thrift stores for good deals while she works in the theatre industry as a stage and light expert. A year ago, Deb and Greg set off for Manhattan in their Odyssey from Kristy’s Brooklyn brownstone, hitting about eight thrift stores and jamming more and more treasures into the van, reminding themselves to leave room for their suitcases. They were cruising the aisles at Housing Works Thriftshop when a ski poster caught Greg’s eye. At $167, $178 with tax, the price was set quite a bit higher than their usual

by Donald-Brian Johnson In 1872, when Jules Verne’s Around The World In 80 Days first appeared in print, readers were thunderstruck. 80 days to traverse the globe? Impossible! And yet, readers couldn’t get enough of the adventures of Phileas Fogg and his faithful valet, Passepartout, who raced ’round the earth by rail, steamship, and even balloon, in an effort to beat the clock.

Nostalgic / Modern McCoy Pottery
The Butterfly line was produced in the early 1940s. McCoy often produced each new design in three or more glazes.
by James Cihlar McCoy Pottery has held an important place in the hearts of collectors for decades. In 1910 J.W. McCoy and his son Nelson McCoy founded the Nelson McCoy Sanitary Stoneware Company in Roseville, Ohio. In 1933, the company name shortened to the Nelson McCoy Pottery Company. At its peak, it was the largest pottery in the area, with more than 500 employees producing approximately five million pieces a year. The company ceased production in 1990. Christine Hoffman often carries McCoy pieces in her shop, Foxglove Market, on Grand Avenue in Saint Paul. She says that McCoy’s “simplicity and everyday appeal” make it work well for contemporary interiors Chilly Willy is decorated with “cold because it is “nostalgic paint,” which is color applied after the and modern at the same

Mustang? Mustang? Was that something made by Fabergé ? by Joan Sween It was a lovely day at the antiques mall. My work partner, Dick, and I were having a lively discussion about “stuff.” He had too much of it; I didn’t have enough of it. A man and a woman came through the door, carrying a flatware case. “Do you buy things?” the man asked. “Sure,” I said. (Do we buy things? Do cows give milk?) I gave Dick a “go ahead, you’ve got seniority” gesture. He gave me a “go ahead, I’ve got too much stuff”

the box, checking out pieces. “Well, this isn’t sterling,” I said. “It’s silverplate.” “Of course it’s sterling,” the man groused. “See where it says ‘EPNS?’” I explained, pointing to the mark on the back of the handle. “That stands for Electroplated Nickel Silver. You have a mixture of different patterns here with a lot of plate wear on the backsides. In that condition, these pieces don’t have much market value.” The man snapped
the case shut, tucked it under his arm, and marched for the door. “Come on, Sarah,” he snarled. “Let’s go someplace where they know their antiques!” Well! I consoled myself with a couple pieces of the mall’s complimentary candy. A couple hours later, a lady walked in with a small chest. Uh... she was carrying a small chest---her personal chest looked good-sized. “Do you buy vintage jewelry?” she asked. “Sure,” I said. (Do I

gesture. The lady opened the wooden chest. It was full of jewelry. I reached to take the first piece out to look at carefully. She moved quickly around to the side of the counter and stood over me. As I examined the pieces one-by-one, her eyes followed my hands like a hawk. Talk about stress! “How much do you want for the lot?” I asked when I was done looking.

In 1911 George Brush gained controlling interest of the J.W. McCoy Pottery Company and renamed it the Brush-McCoy Pottery Company. The McCoys sold their shares in 1919, but the name remained until 1925, when it changed again to the Brush Pottery Company. Brush ran until 1982. She assisted her husband in his work for twenty years and presented the company designers with valuable ideas. The popular and beautiful flower forms were her inspiration. During the design phase, Mrs. McCoy would take flowers directly to the designers to see if vases could be made in those particular forms.”

Prestwood says, “Craig Nissen and Bob and Margaret Hanson recommended me to the producers. I was in
disbelief when they called and asked if I would do the segment, but of course I said yes!” The show clip is available for viewing at marthastewart.com. At first, Prestwood said, “McCoy was kind of pushed aside by dealers. The other Ohio potteries were much more in demand and much more expensive.” When she first started, “McCoy was cheap enough and plentiful enough that anyone could collect it. In recent years there have been several rare items surface that have sur- In 1940, Hobnail Heart cookie jars were made in prised even auctioneers yellow, green, pink, blue, and white glazes. Some

“How much do you offer?” she asked. “Well,” I said. “There are some nice pieces here. I could give you $500 for all of it.” She snapped the chest shut, tucked it under her arm, and headed for the door. “Thank you,” she said. “Hey, wait a minute! Did my offer offend you?” “Oh, no. I plan to sell this on eBay, and right now I’m just going around getting estimates.” Sigh. This time it took a handful of the mall’s complimentary candy to chase the Foleysimply blues away. (I must go on a diet.) Toward the end of7 the day, a man came in 25 with a photograph in 95 his hands. “Do you buy things?” he asked. “Sure,” I said. (Do pigs fly?) I gave Dick a “go ahead, I’ve got a little too much on my plate” gesture. He gave me a
“go ahead, I’m not going to touch it with a fork” gesture. The man slapped his photo down on the counter. “You know what that is?” “It’s a photo of a badly dented 1965 Mustang.” “That there is not only a classic car, it’s a famous car, and I’m willing to sell it to you for a song!” “Famous?” “This is the car they used in that movie Dr. Zhivago. And the car that John Wayne crashed and died in out Milaca Milaca on Route 66, just after he made The Ten 23Commandments!” Pease I gave Dick an “I think I’m going to be sick” gesture.
