In 1950, adults could look forward to living just over 68 years, and the average yearly income was in the neighborhood of $3200. To today’s ears, that sounds well below the poverty line—but let’s take a closer look at everyday expenses: * Gas: 18 cents a gallon! * Rent: $75 per month! * A first class postage stamp: 3 cents! * A ticket to the movies: 65 cents! * Hamburger: 49 cents per pound! * Bread: 17 cents a

loaf! There were, of course, major expenditures too—but even those now seem mind-bogglingly low: a brand-new car could be yours for $1500, a brand-new home for $8500, and a year’s college tuition, (at Harvard, no less), was just $600! And what else? Well, Harry Truman was comfortably ensconced in the White House. The FBI came up with its first “Ten Most Wanted” list. Television was well on its way to replacing radio as America’s favorite home entertainment medium,

A 1950s “modern flair” was guaranteed with “Fashion Takes The Floor.” The home décor pamphlet was chock-full of design ideas to “compliment contemporary furniture and keynote your modern living.” Better Homes and Gardens ad, September 1950

Optimistic new trends emerged that during the previous years of selfdenial would never have seen the light of day. The fabulous ’50s had arrived, and consumers were ready to celebrate! The Original Recyclables!

This 1970 photo provides a view of the rear of the house. The Dutch influence in the shutters and flower-boxes is accentuated by the windmill. At this time the building had arches at the rear corners. (Photo provided)

Julie Gubbin enjoyed a rare moment of relaxation at Al Hofstede’s gingerbread house, now the location of Antiquified, her antiques and collectibles business. Gubbin opened Antiquified in 2004 in the Alamo Building on Central Avenue in Northeast Minneapolis. The building’s owner had other plans for her space and did not renew her lease. “My customers wanted me to stay Northeast,” Gubbin said, “and I knew about the special house at the corner of California Street and Lowry Avenue.” She decided to just go for it and knocked on the door. “Our dad wasn’t big on vacations,” John Hofstede offered. “That time could be used working on the house.” Longtime neighbor Delores Volk said of the senior Hofstede, “He was always working on something. He was a very handy man.” “My dad was very proud of that house,” Al Hofstede affirmed. The Hofstedes sold the house for $57,000 in 1993 during a down market. Twenty-two years later in 2015, the

through here,” he continued. “We had arguments, you know, like when politicians get together. I don’t know how my parents put up with it, but they did.” “The house was put on the market when mother went into eldercare,” Tony Hofstede stated. “We

Well yes, Shawnee is wonderful, but ….

by Joan Sween It was the first day of the big antiques and flea market show. The dealers were all set up and traffic was fulsome. Across the aisle from me was a dealer named Marge who had an attractive booth--her dark blue table covers all matched and her merchandise was sparkling clean. Prominent on her front table were three Shawnee cookie jars-Smiley Pig, Muggsy, and Lucky the Elephant, each priced at $250. Two hours into the show, another dealer friend of ours came rushing up. “Watch out,” she said, “there’s a new dealer coming this way. She’s writing down everyone’s prices so she can copy them on her own stuff!” “No!” said Marge. “That’s not right. She should learn to do her own pricing, not steal from our experience.” I kept my mouth shut. It seemed to me that checking the pricing of other dealers was one of the best ways to learn. I do it myself on occasion. “I hear she’s looking especially at cookie jars,” said our warning dealer. She rushed off to alert the next aisle. “Learning how to price cookie jars by looking at mine, huh,” said Marge. “I’ll show her some prices she can copy.” She zipped the

Dealer’s Choice

By Joan Sween price tags off her three cookie jars and replaced them with a price tag of $1,000 on each. Then she went back to tending to the sale of her other items.

Two hours into the show, another dealer friend of ours came rushing up. “Watch out,” she said, “there’s a new dealer coming this way. She’s writing down everyone’s prices so she can copy them on her own stuff!”

Half an hour later, Marge said, “Psst! Joan! I think that’s her.” She nodded at a woman in a bright pink sweater coming up the aisle carrying a small notebook and a pencil. We pretended not to take any special notice of her. She arrived at Marge’s booth, looked at the cookie jars, frowned, then looked closer with eyes as round as saucers. “Excuse me,” she said to Marge. “You have these cookie jars priced $1,000 each.” “Shhhh,” said Marge. “Don’t let any other dealers hear you.” “What?” said the new dealer. “This year’s Ceramic Convention was just held yesterday in Zanesville, and it was reported that Shawnee pottery was the rarest of all collectibles. Prices will be soaring, and I want to get the high prices before anyone else hears the news.” That didn’t quite make sense to me, but I kept my mouth shut. “Really!!” said the new dealer. “Excuse me, I’ve gotta go.” “Promise you won’t tell anyone?” said Marge. “No, I won’t tell, I won’t tell,” said the new dealer as she rushed off. “She’ll tell,” said Marge, “and you know what will happen?

Everyone will laugh at her, and it will teach her to learn her own pricing.” Two hours later, the rumor reached us. The word was that dealers all over the mall were raising their prices sky-

high on Shawnee. “Good heavens, look what I’ve done,” said Marge as she leaned on a corner of my booth. “They’re believing it! What do you think I should do now?”
