Hibbing Miner. Snell reports The Minnesota History Center has a special fondness for Dewey Albinson (1898-1971). Born in Minneapolis, Albinson attended what would become the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. During the Great Depression, he worked for the WPA Federal Art Project documenting Minnesota and its people, like this canvas of a Hibbing miner, at a moment in history. New York,” said the younger Snell. “I’d take them gallery to gallery. I changed my college major to art history. I went all in.” Snell’s instincts were correct. His grandfather had collected some important works. A maritime painting by 19th century artist

Lake Pepin (above). Nicholas Richard Brewer (1857-1949) grew up not far south of Lake Pepin in Minnesota’s Olmstead County. In 1875, he moved to Minneapolis and studied under German artist Henry J. Koempel. Brewer traveled a lot and had many commissions in Arkansas, but always remained tied to St. Paul. Cover: Enthroned (right). In 1951, Hugh Kappel (1910-1982) exhibited with Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Robert De Niro, Sr. (the actor’s father), Helen Frankenthaler, and dozens more at the ground-breaking 9th Street Art Exhibition in New York. Later, the artist taught at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. His legacy is kept alive by a website created by grandson Tony Hale.

The Old Times
Bruce Willis has nothing on me! good! I was meandering along, examining things on the front tables of a large square booth, and turned into the opening at the front, with my eyes still glued to the goodies on display. Unbeknownst to me, there was a wooden antique coaster wagon on the ground inside the booth, with its handle across the opening. I went flying. You know how they say that when you’re about to die, your whole life flashes before you? Well, I knew I wasn’t going to die because what flashed through my mind was that final scene from DIE HARD II. You know, where the huge jetliner is

finally heading for the runway, and you hear the climactic movement of Sibelius’s “Finlandia?” (Tympani: Pom! Pom! Pom! POM! Trumpets: Tran dada tata tata! Tran dada tata tata!)
You know how they say that when you’re about to die, your whole life flashes before you?
I was airborne through the “poms” OK, but landed with a whoomp and a huge cloud of dust before we got to the trumpets. “Oh, no!” screeched the female half of the booth partnership. “Is it
hurt?” That struck me as odd, but maybe with all the dust, she couldn’t tell if I was a him or a her. “Is it hurt?” she queried again, wringing her hands and running back and forth. I had made a fourpoint landing---knees, elbows, chin, and.... er..... beach ball. “Is it hurt?” She was close to tears. How nice of her to be so sympathetic. For the record, yes, indeedy, it certainly hurt. The male half of the booth partnership hooked a hand under my elbow and hauled. I pushed; he pulled. I got partway up, pitched sideways, lurched into the vendor, and we both went down again, with me on top.
pointing at his partner, “Do something helpful! Go sell something to those people!” I rolled over on one elbow. (Ouch, yowch, yowch.) The man got up and extended a hand cautiously. I pushed; he pulled. This time we both got upright, although I think it was a little uncomplimentary of him to say, “Ooooof!” when he pulled. The woman ran over and began examining the antique coaster wagon. “How much is the wagon?” someone in the crowd asked. “Does it have any damage?” The lady vendor hyperventilated as she examined the wagon
Dealer’s Choice
By Joan Sween “Careful!” she wailed. “Don’t break the handle!” Light dawned. I was not the object of her extreme concern. This new position gave me a different view, and I could see that a crowd was starting to gather. “You!” said the man, looking me straight in the eyes. “Get off me!” “You!” he said,

“Maybe not,” he said, “but I think I threw my back out trying to get you off the ground.” A short while later, I was sitting on a nearby truck bumper with my pants legs rolled up as The Man I Married picked gravel out of my knees. “How are you feeling?” he asked. “Where did you mostly land?” I gestured in the general area of my midsection. “Oh,” he said, and
