Mille Lacs Indian Museum & Trading Post
Travis Zimmerman, site manager of the Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post, points out the three districts that make up the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. District I is located near Onamia, Districts II and IIa near McGregor and Isle, and District III is near Hinckley. (Photos by Les Broich unless noted otherwise.)
By Virginia Broich ONAMIA, MINN.-Nestled off of Highway 169 on Mille Lacs Lake in east central Minnesota stands a treasure of the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS), the Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post. It is located on the reservation of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. Travis Zimmerman, site manager, said, “People come from all over the world. They may have tour packages and come from China, Japan, Russia, Sweden, or Australia. Some

Steven Premo, an Ojibwe artist, exhibited his work at the museum in a oneperson show in 2015. Zimmerman said, “One mission of the museum is to promote Indian artists. We like to support local artists.” Here Premo stands next to one of his 1984 paintings, “Dad.” His dad was a staff sergeant decorated with a Bronze Star in WWII. This work was displayed at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts during its “6 Native Minnesota Artists” exhibit. When his dad saw the painting, Premo said he gave it one of the highest statements of praise his children had come to recognize. “That’s pretty good.”

From 1920 to the late 1940s, the Ayers rented out cottages all around the Trading Post. After living in the cramped quarters of their rental cabins for more than 20 years, Jeanette and Harry Ayers built a house similar to this one in 1941. When their home was renovated, Zimmerman said, “the house still needed to be a house of the 1940s.” Today it is a children’s education center where Zimmerman and his staff give workshops for kids.

Harry Ayer holds basswood dolls made at Mille Lacs around 1925. “Dolls made from willow sticks or basswood fibers have long been a favorite of Ojibwe boys and girls,” according to text on the wall of the Trading Post Museum. “Often dressed in beaded buckskin clothing, dolls are outfitted with miniature tools, baskets, weapons, or musical instruments. Today, dolls are still made from traditional materials. But contemporary dolls with Indian features are also becoming popular, especially when dressed in colorful powwow outfits.”

Jingle dresses, named for jangling metal cones used as fringe on women’s garments, originated with the Ojibwe people at Mille Lacs in 1919, when a holy man had a dream in which he saw four women wearing the dresses, dancing, and singing. He and his wife brought the dresses and the songs to life, and four women put them on and performed, making his dream come true. Jingle dresses first were adopted throughout the Ojibwe community in Minnesota, then spread to the Dakota people in Minnesota, the Dakotas, and Montana.

Native Americans of the Great Plains believe the air is filled with both good and bad dreams.According to legend, the good dreams pass through the center hole to the sleeping person. The bad dreams are trapped in the web where they perish in the light of dawn. Historically, dream catchers were hung in the tepee or lodge and on a baby’s cradle board.

The Old Times
Luck is out there; go look for it.
By Joan Sween On the day of the big antiques show and flea market, I woke up feeling lucky. My body actually tingled with the premonition that I would find something wonderful today. I leaped out of bed and into clothes, washed my face, combed my hair, and grabbed my purse. “I’m ready,” I shouted. I found The Man I Married sitting at the kitchen table, drinking coffee, reading the newspaper, and still in his pajamas. “What are you doing?” I screeched. “I’m feeling lucky! We’ve got to get down to the fairgrounds!” “The gates don’t open until 8:00,” TMIM said. “Have some breakfast.” He was right; it was only 6:00 a.m.
Dealer’s Choice
By Joan Sween I made myself breakfast---five pieces of chocolate candy and a slice of cold pizza. “Aren’t you going to get dressed?” I asked TMIM. “There’s plenty of time,” he said. He was right, there was still a lot of time, so I killed time by arranging my money. “After that, I pronounced, “I’m all set to go. My money’s burning a hole in my pocket, heh, heh, heh.”
so “Don’t get excited,” he said. “We’re still way early.” I ran my mental check list again. Widebrimmed straw sun hat, check. Purse with shoulder strap, check. Money, check. Loupe, check. Rubber-tired walker with seat and basket, check. Mascara, sun screen, lip balm, check, check, check. I looked at the clock. “We need to leave in 20 minutes,” I said to TMIM. “Shouldn’t you be getting ready now?” “Plenty of time yet,” he said with his nose still buried in the newspaper. “I’ll go sit by the garage door,” I said, “so I don’t hold you up.” I put on some more lip balm. I counted my money again. I ran through my mental check list again. I looked

at the clock again. “Yikes!” I screeched. “We should be leaving in five minutes, and you’re still in your pajamas!” “Don’t get excited,” he said, folding his paper and heading for the bedroom. I was ready to explode when smack on time he appeared, dressed, washed and groomed. I just hate it when he does that. Finally we took off and arrived at the gates just as they were opening. The event had many buildings and 12 acres of outdoor booths. Usually, I went into the buildings first, but today was my lucky day, and
My body actually tingled with the premonition that I would find something wonderful today.
I felt fate pointing me straight toward the outdoor booths. I started down an aisle, looking carefully at everything. I should have looked more carefully. A sharp metal point on a tall Mexican yard ornament struck me on the forehead. After what seemed like a pint of blood, TMIM finally got me to stop bleeding. He suggested we have a doctor check me out. “No,” I said, “I’ll be fine. Today is my lucky day.” One aisle later a pile of horse shoes accidentally dropped
on my foot. TMIM bandaged it and suggested we have a doctor look at it. “No,” I said, “I can rest on my walker if I feel faint. Besides, this is my lucky day.” Farther on, a display of heavy antique picture frames was tipped by the wind---right on where my hand was. TMIM used a wooden spoon for a splint and wrapped my hand with an Ace bandage. He suggested we have an x-ray to make sure no bones
were broken. “Nahhh,” I said. “It’s just bruised and it’s my left hand. Besides I have to keep going because today is my lucky day. Then, in a dusty booth filled with inexpensive jewelry, I saw a Trifari jelly belly swan brooch, priced $20. Cleaned up, it would be worth ten times that much. I limped away on my sprained foot, with a

The Ayers added the sales room onto the Trading Post in 1926 to display Indian-made gifts from across the United States. In the early days, Harry Ayer exhibited his personal collection of Indian arts and crafts on the walls of the sales room. Today the spacious, restored room looks much like it did when the Ayers were in business. The rafters exemplify part of the original store design.

A nod to the wise Salt-and-pepper nodders Japan” are especially desirable), and nodders retained their firstmarket popularity throughout the 1950s. The great majority of salt-and-pepper nodders are porcelain, allowing for the most flexibility in shape and decoration. Porcelain also keeps the seasoning inside at its most fresh and flavorful. Sizing is fairly consistent; a nodder set measures roughly 3½ inches high by 4 inches wide. Nodder bases are often interchangeable, differing only in their hand-painted flourishes (roses are most common), or their applied decals celebrating a

Nodders fascinate because, unlike most other salt-and-peppers, they “do” something (in addition, of course, to their designated function). The first nodders, widely available in the 1920s and ’30s, were primarily produced for export by Japan and Germany. With the onset of World War II, those export gates clanged shut. For the duration, salt-andpeppers and other giftware items were domestically produced. Following the war, imports resumed (pieces stamped “Occupied Wedding day in the pigpen. A Florida souvenir nodder set, for example, is often enhanced with the application of tiny shells. Generally, the nodder’s removable porcelain shakers are mounted on a porcelain

The condiments themselves are held in ceramic pegs extending below the figural portion of each removable shaker. The shakers don’t hold much seasoning, but with whimsies such as these, practicality is never a major concern. A variation includes a central mustard pot, allowing for another useful condiment. And here’s an interesting note: filled shakers seem to nod with more consistency than empty ones. While the bases may be similar, on the
removable shakers themselves imagination runs riot. Animal lovers can populate their kitchens with an entire nodder menagerie. While fish, deer, and chickens are the most popular motifs, the design range includes almost every denizen of field and stream. There are winsome bear, bashful donkey, and playful kitten nodders. Pheasant, bluebird, and turkey nodders too, plus graceful flamingos and hot-to-trot racehorses. There’s even that oddity, the “yes and no” nodder: on a kangaroo pair, the mother’s head nods one way, the joey’s another. Locale souvenirs

to kids. Operating as a small museum, the original Trading Post tracks the history of the Trading Post and of the Ayers’ life in Minnesota. In 1926 the Ayers added the North Wing, or sales room, to the Trading Post. When the Ayers home was gutted, their dressers, bed frames, cabinets, and bed posts were moved into the sales room “to give it an old-time feel,” Zimmerman said. Today the sales room continues to display and to sell a wide range of contemporary Indian arts and crafts from all
over the United States. Craft supplies are also for sale. The Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post historic site continues as “active, viable, and vital to the living, ever-changing culture and people,” Zimmerman said. The Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post holds summer programs in July and August, including a birch bark basket workshop; a two-day workshop on making porcupine quill jewelry; a two-day workshop on making Ojibwe moccasins; an afternoon helping kids make shoulder bags; a fun run; and
wild rice processing demonstrations every Saturday in September. The Museum and Trading Post are located at 43411 Oodena Drive in Onamia.
