La Crosse shop celebrates 30 years

--PRESS RELEASE LA CROSSE,WIS.—The Antique Center of La Crosse, Wis., is celebrating 30 years in the antiques business. Thirty years ago seven antiques lovers dreamed of owning their own shop. Then Gantert Furniture began to call their name. A fixture in downtown La Crosse for over a century, the then vacant building’s size and location begged for an antiques shop and gave the budding entrepreneurs courage to sign a lease. A flurry of activity

followed, as they cleaned, scrubbed, measured out spaces, and came up with a business model. Today, the shop is still a major downtown attraction. Over the years, more dealers joined the enterprise, expanding retail space to the basement and second floor, and handwritten receipts gave way to computer-generated ones. What was modern for dealers who grew up in the ’50s and ’60s is now vintage to the younger generation. The treasures coming out of Grandma’s house have changed over the

years. The Antique Center is open 361 days of the year, closed only on Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Every effort is made to keep reproductions and new items out of the store. Last year the Antiques Center guest book listed visitors from 43 states and 12 foreign countries. Perched on the Mississippi River and home to three colleges, La Crosse is an easy drive from the Twin Cities and an even easier one from Rochester, Minn.

The city is proud to bill this as an outstanding show, once ranked by Country Living Magazine among the nation’s top 12 antiques shows. This free show is located along the banks of the Zumbro River in historic Oronoco, Minn., (10 minutes

north of Rochester and some 45 minutes south of the Twin Cities on Hwy 52). Hundreds of dealers will fill over a thousand booths up and down the streets. All proceeds help fund community projects, including the fire department. The VFW

is hosting a pancake breakfast, and the fire hall a sandwich shop. Families and dogs welcome. Hours: Friday and Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. For information, visit goldrushmn.com or call 507-367-2111.

1949 to promote interest in rare and antiquarian books and book collecting, and to foster collegial relations,” per their website. Not surprisingly, there are books about book collecting, and the ABAA lists the top 10, including ABC for Book Collectors by John Carter; Collected Books: A Guide to Values by Allen and Patricia Ahern; and A Gentle Madness: Bibliophiles, Bibliomanes, and the Eternal Passion for Books, by Nicholas Basbanes. Fittingly, antiquarians and booklovers have been memorialized in literature, from Christopher Morley’s espionage tale The Haunted Bookshop to Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451 to Umberto Eco’s Italian Renaissance mystery The Name of the Rose. Dealers came from far and wide. Of course, many Twin Cities booksellers, such as James and Mary Laurie

Strand leaves Collectors Corner

--PRESS RELEASE FERGUS FALLS, MINN.—Elfrida Strand, one of the founders of Collectors Corner in Fergus Falls, Minn., is retiring this month just short of 32 years as an owner of the business. Back in 1985, she and her friend Ann Odegard got to talking at auctions and decided they needed a venue for selling the antique treasures they had accumulated. They found four other people to begin with them and opened the shop. Their first location required them to haul merchandise up a metal staircase, so after a year, they went to J.C. Penney and rented half the basement. They have been downtown at 221 W. Lincoln ever

since. Over the years Strand noted a profound shift away from fine antiques to primitives and collectibles that were very important in people’s childhoods. Fisher Price toys, Tonka toys, certain dolls, and children’s books, for example, have become very popular. Strand’s knowledge of antiques stretches back over about 40 years to a time when she and her husband used to do flea markets and antiques shows in southern Minnesota because one of their daughters lived down there. After her husband died 20 years ago, Strand said, “I just wasn’t ready to give up

my antiques yet, and I figured this would give me something to do. I enjoyed the people. I enjoyed looking for things. I enjoyed our group of five who worked very well together. I loved to meet people, and I loved having old classmates and friends who had moved away come in when they were in town.” Strand says there is no shortage of dealers applying to take her place at Collectors Corners. The shop will go on. And so will Strand, now 90, who has good health, daughters in Alaska, Iowa, and Minnesota, plenty of grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, an urge to travel.

The Old Times

American Pickers, eat your heart out.

by Joan Sween Finding enough resale merchandise was getting more and more difficult, not just for me, but for all my dealer friends. In fact, things were getting a bit desperate. I had bruises on my shins from competitive tussling at garage sales. Winning the bid at auctions was so close to resale price it could make your teeth tingle. And what’s the proper attitude when visiting another shop, looking for sleepers? I’m not comfortable with the two-faced scenario one is obliged to go through when you find a sleeper, priced at $20 and you know you can re-price it at $100. “Isn’t this sweet,” you coo when you place it on the service counter. “My er …niece, will love this on her bedroom shelf.” How do the bigtime swanky metropolitan dealers find merchandise? Oh, right. They buy containers shipped from Europe. Humph, forget that. The best I could afford would be a cardboard box shipped from Iowa. “Too bad you don’t deal in rusty old motorcycles,” said The Man I Married, “you could be like those American Pickers.”

Dealer’s Choice

By Joan Sween Suddenly the clouds rolled away (I’m not kidding) and a bolt of lightning reached down and smacked my right brain. “Minnesota Picker!” I shouted. I could become a Minnesota Picker! “Don’t be ridiculous,” said TMIM. “You don’t know a thing about old motorcycles.” “But I do know ceramics and jewelry,” I said. “Uh-huh,” he retorted. “And how are you going to know where they are?” “Trust me,” I said, “I know where to look.”

Saturday morning I prodded TMIM out of bed, fortifying him with an infusion of coffee. We started slowly driving the back roads of farming country. “Keep to gravel roads,” I instructed. “Gravel roads!” he exclaimed. “No one in his right mind is going to try to sell anything from a shop on a gravel road.” “Watch!” I said. Some time after that, we were passing a farmstead nestled in some old oaks. Paint was peeling off the house; the front porch listed sharply to one side. Nearby was what looked like a chicken coop with a tarpaper roof ripped in spots. A small weatherworn sign dangled sideways from one nail, reading a faded, “Antiques.” “This is it!” I said. “Pull in! Pull in!” A woman wearing an apron and two old fat dogs came out the back door. She was

wearing the apron, you understand, not the fat dogs. “You have antiques for sale,” I said. “Duh!” she said. “I hope you’re not interrupting me because you just want to look.” “Oh, no,” I said. “I’m a serious buyer--if you’ve got what I want at the right price.” “Uh huh,” she grumbled, unlocking the coop and letting us in. “That’s everyone’s cop-out.”

it,” she said. I looked around and selected two small North Dakota School of Mines pots, priced $5 each. (And which I intended to re-price at $200 each.) “Uh-huh,” muttered the lady. “Looking for the cheapest items, are we?” A tabletop display of common necklaces piled carelessly caught my eye. “Ten dollars a necklace,” she snapped. “A fair price.” A woman I pulled the Miriam wearing an st Haskell Held from the pile. Rush to Rochester’s Olmstead County Fairgrounds is on!

Russ and Rhonda Blank of Sparrow’s Nest Antiques in Lincoln, Neb., bring eye catching American primitives to Rochester’s Gold Rush.

--PRESS RELEASE ROCHESTER, MINN.—Townsend Promotions is proud to announce its annual summer Gold Rush, a vintage and antique show and flea market, to be held at the Olmsted County Fairgrounds from Friday, August 19 through Sunday, August 21. The fairgrounds are located at the intersection of Highway 63 South and 16th Street S.E. in Rochester, Minn.

“What makes Gold Rush so special is the consistent quality and unique merchandise presented by dealers,” said Kae Townsend. That quality, she promises, can be found in an inexhaustible myriad of artifacts both indoors in nine buildings and outdoors on 52 acres of

fairgrounds. Dealers from all over the United States and Canada will fill over 1300 spaces with everything from fine and vintage jewelry to primitives and Americana to midcentury modern furniture and barware. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and
