“witch’s brew” (tropical punch with a slab of steaming dry ice), and plates of “cat cookies,” (with gleaming candy corn eyes and fork-tine whiskers), await the hungry hordes. Near the foot of the stairs, an eerily grinning Jack-o’lantern awaits his prey. And slowly down the stairs they descend: pint-size devil imps and fairy princesses, friendly ghosts and

wart-nosed witches, each lugging a stuffedto-the-brim trick-or treat bag. Their freshout-of-the-box costumes, (dime-store bargains that even included a mask), are at last making their longawaited, once-a-year appearance. It’s 1960, it’s Halloween, and the party is on! Nowadays, Halloween is second only to Christmas as the biggest decorating holiday ever. We spend over six billion dollars

annually on new and vintage Halloween decorations, costumes, treats, and other paraphernalia. Over one quarter of the candy sold each year is sold at Halloween. (That fills a lot of trick-or-treat bags). Halloween décor items, both old and new, have been fashioned from die-cut cardboard, crêpe paper, metal, composition, plastic, fabric, wax, and ceramic. Among the most popular depictions of things that go bump in the night: Jack-o’lanterns, witches, skeletons, bats, and black cats. Although Halloween collectors veer toward the vintage, they sometimes have a devil of a time finding exactly what they’re looking for. The relative rarity, and corresponding priciness

Antiquing in the

of Halloweenabilia, is primarily because these were items of ephemeral shelf life. Die-cut cardboard cats and witches with accordioned crêpe paper arms and legs were really only intended for one-time use. Hung with a lavish application of Scotch tape or poked with thumb tacks, the pieces were often damaged, then discarded when the witching hour had passed. The reason?

They were inexpensive, and next Halloween would bring a brand new crop. (One party goods manufacturer, Dennison, even published, for a time, German dimensional die-cut witch, 16 in. h., $125an annual “Halloween 150. Bogie Book” featuring the latest additions to their ghoulish décor line.) can Prices sometimes be on the scary side: a U.S.-made die-cut witch face from the 1950s can fetch up to $30. The Old Times

A grand entrance to Trader’s Market

ELKO-NEW MARKET, MINN.— You couldn’t call it an antique, not even vintage. It was only 15 years old. Not a reproduction, though, the Real Thing, and probably it is the only one of its kind surviving from the year 2001. In fact, it is so rare that John Whaley, manager of the Trader’s Market in Elko-New Market, Minn., asked if the Old Times could track down whoever it was that turned in a discount coupon from 2001 to get into its Labor Day weekend event for one dollar off the regular

The mystery discount coupon

price. Whaley and his partners, who count up and sort through all the discount coupons at the end of the antique show and flea market, would

love to know how somebody came upon this tattered old coupon and what their story is. Did they find it in an old coat pocket when they were cleaning out

Aunt Mildred and Uncle Harry’s estate and decide to check out Trader’s for the first time? Or had they found it in a book they had been reading that year and were tickled pink to be able to save a few dollars getting into the market this year? If you have a clue or can already swear to the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, please e-mail Whaley at prairiecenter250@ gmail.com -- and while you’re at it, why don’t you copy us, too, at linda@theoldtimes. com

The Old Times

Seriously? Are there pots of gold at the end of a rainbow?

by Joan Sween It was Tuesday; Cindy and I worked the mall together on Tuesday. She started our day with a pronouncement, “I’m I mean, I’m bored. happy to be here and all, but there’s no excitement in our work day.” “So what are you thinking?” I asked. “A visit from Publisher’s Clearinghouse?” “No,” she said. “Just something a little different. Something a little daring.” Shortly thereafter a fresh-faced young man of about 20 or so came into the mall carrying a cardboard box sealed with tape. “Do you ladies buy antiques?” he asked.

She started our day with a pronouncement, “I’m bored. I mean, I’m happy to be here and all, but there’s no excitement in our work day.” “Is that what you’ve got in the box?” asked Cindy. “I don’t know. Maybe,” he said. “I bought this box of stuff at an auction sale.” “I’ll take it!” said Cindy. “How much do you want for it?” “Would $5, cash, be too much?” he asked. I threw Cindy a bugeyed look and a frantic eyebrow signal. Even for only $5, buying sight unseen was a careless way to do business. My hints didn’t work. “Don’t get your knickers in a twist,” said Cindy after the young

man had left. “I had fun gambling on the box. It’s the most fun I’ve had for weeks, and it only cost me $5.” While I remained untwisted, Cindy took the tape off the box and began taking things out one by one. She removed many pieces of pure junk, and then said, “Well what do you know?” as she reached into the box again and pulled out a natural green and white carved jade snuff bottle that I estimated to be worth somewhere between $15 and $20. “How’s that for excitement!” she crowed, reaching for a price guide. I was happy for Cindy’s good luck, but still had a lot of reservations when the next Tuesday the same fresh-faced young man walked in with a sealed box. “I bought another box of stuff at an auction sale,” he said. “How much?” said Cindy, pulling the box

toward her. Again, I bugged my eyes at her, but she wouldn’t even look. “I think this stuff is a bit better,” he said. “Would $10, cash, be too much?” As soon as he left, Cindy tore the tape off her box and began to lift out pieces of pure junk. Then, as she peered into the box, her hand dived in and pulled out a sterling silver candle snuffer of about a $40 value. “A-hah! A-hah! Who’s getting all the excitement now!” she squealed as she danced around. Next Tuesday, there was our fresh-faced young man with his sealed box again. “I don’t think you want this, he said bashfully to Cindy. I went to one of those fancy auctions and paid a lot for these items.” “How much?” said Cindy. “Would $500, cash,

be too much?” he asked. With my knickers definitely in a twist, I grabbed Cindy, pulled her into the rest room and gave her the sternest lecture I could muster. “Do not ever pay three figures for a sealed box!” I hissed. “Besides, where are you going to get $500 cash?” “I’ve made money on his boxes every time!” she hissed back.

A labeled bottle and an embossed bottle of William Radam’s Microbe Killer; the embossing was painted to enhance readability. A trial in Minneapolis in 1913 determined that Microbe Killer’s claim to cure all kinds of diseases, clearly stated on the label, was fraudulent. The Minneapolis Sunday Tribune said the verdict was seen as “a triumph for the government and as the most important step toward the curbing of misbranded patent medicines that has ever been taken since the passage of the pure food and drug act in 1906.” The government chemist who testified at the trial would later file similar charges against the Microbe Killer in New York. An 1891 copy of Secret Nostrums and Systems by Charles W. Oleson, M.D., revealed that Microbe Killer was nothing more than red wine, sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and well water. by Steve Ketcham Collecting early vessels, whether glass bottles or stoneware jugs, is a history lesson. These pieces of the past were often discarded after use, their first owners believing them to be empty. But in fact they are full of history, and the lessons they teach are usually not found in textbooks.

From the frontispiece of his 1884 book, a portrait of William Radam, inventor of Microbe Killer. Note how the History microscope on the table has a prominent presence; the two Cont. on page 14 could practically be in conversation.

William Radam published his book, Microbes and the Microbe Killer in 1884. Over 300 pages, it might be the world’s longest infomercial. Radam tells how he treated and cured his own illness, thereby discovering Microbe Killer. He (conveniently) claimed the only cases his potion would not cure were those where the patient started using Microbe Killer too late. He insisted he could have cured the recently deceased Emperor Fredrick of Germany. He said none of his seven letters to the emperor were answered. Radam’s explanation: “Jealousy reigned among the physicians in attendance.”

Keep Jug Tightly Corked / Wm. Radam’s / “Microbe Killer” / No. 2. This bullet shaped gallon jug is bottom signed “Minnesota Stoneware Company Red Wing Minn.” Similar jugs were made with the numbers 1 and 3 stamped on the shoulder. At least a dozen versions of Radam jugs are known. Three were made at Red Wing. At the peak of his success, Radam had 17 laboratories in the U.S., Canada, and Britain. An 1891 copy of Secret Nostrums and Systems by Charles W. Oleson, M. D., revealed that Microbe Killer was nothing more than red wine, sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and well water.

The label on a Microbe Killer bottle justifie the production and promotion of three different Microbe Killer products by differentiating them according to strength: No. 1 for all diseases of a chronic but not malignant character, take a wine glassful four times a day, one-half hour before each meal and on retiring at night. No. 2 is stronger than No. 1 and is intended for patients of stronger constitution. It should be taken the same as No. 1 No. 3 is very strong and is intended to give quick relief in malignant, very painful and dangerous diseases, where quick action is necessary to save a life or relieve the patient from great pain. For diseases such as Choler, Yellow Fever, or Diphtheria, take one-half pint every one or two hours, using it at the same time as an injection and compress until improvement sets in; then take regular doses.

Metzger was proud enough of his Dr. Bopp’s Bitters that he advertised it on his letterheads. No doubt the product contained a good dose of alcohol; most bitters did. Note that the letterhead also advertises “Cayo Coco Wine, The Great Blood Tonic.” What better way to increase the sale of wine than to promote it as having great medicinal qualities?

This Lewis L. Metzger Co. flyer repeats the word “bargain” and claims: “Dr. Bopp’s Hamburger Type Stomach Bitters $2.50 per Gallon. This is the very best Bitters sold in this country. We can recommend this fine Bitters as the best remedy for stomach and liver trouble.” Considering that the product is offered by a liquor dealer and likely contains around 20 percent alcohol (most bitters did), the promise of remedial benefits to the liver are bold indeed. Note that Metzger also offered his Uncle Mike Whiskey in gallon jugs in the promotion at the bottom of the page.

The Old Times Lewis Metzger used this one-gallon size jug to contain his Dr. Bopp’s Hamburger Stomach Bitters, which he sold for $2.50 per gallon. It is bottom signed “Minnesota Stoneware Co. Red Wing, Minn.” A two gallon jug bearing the identical stamp is also known to exist. Metzger was born in Germany in 1858. He opened his St. Paul liquor business in 1902 after spending many years as a traveling salesman. Metzger was a mason. As of 1907, his residence was listed as 51 Avon St., St. Paul.

Metzger, Zein & Co. / Distillers, / St. Paul, Minn. / Sole Agents for the U. S. for / Dr. Bopp’s / Hamburger Stomach Bitters. Measuring one-half gallon in size, this stoneware jug is currently the only known example to feature advertising for Dr. Bopp’s Hamburger Stomach Bitters. Two larger versions, measuring one and two gallons, bear a nearly identical advertising stamp reading “Lewis L. Metzger,” but fail to mention Mr. Zien. Metzger and Zien were in business together in 1903, but by 1905, Lewis Metzger is listed alone in city directories. Research by Wisconsin bottle collectors Peter Mass and Tim Wolter found that Zien was one of several brothers involved in the liquor trade in Milwaukee and Duluth. The jug shown is bottom signed (embossed) “Minnesota Stoneware Red Wing Minnesota.” It is interesting to note that the Zien brothers sold Berliner Magen Bitters in amber bottles, but no bottles, embossed or paper labeled, are known for the Dr. Bopp’s brand.

The Old Times

Metzger marketed Dr. Bopp’s Bitters in stoneware jugs, but most bitters came in glass bottles. Some bitters came in fancy bottles with exclusive, patented designs. Here is a bottle patented in 1897 that contained George Benz and Sons Appetine Bitters. To its right is the bottle used by P. J. Bowlin to market his Digestine Bitters. Like Metzger, both Benz and Bowlin were St. Paul liquor dealers before Prohibition.
