Imbibing history at the Volstead House
Volstead poses alone. Are those lights from heaven shining down on him?
Time Magazine featured Andrew J. Volstead, “A good Christian man,” on its March 29, 1926 cover. Seven years after he became nationally known for sponsoring the Prohibition Act,—informally referred to as the Volstead Act— and three years after he left Congress, he was investigating St. Paul businesses that sought legal license to purchase alcohol for industrial use.
by Linda Simpkins GRANITE FALLS, MINN.—Before you get in the door of the house in Granite Falls, Minn., that from 1894 until 1947 belonged to the author of the Volstead Act, a large plaque urges visitors to take a wider view of the U.S. Congressman than his role as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee pushing through a bill implementing the Prohibition
Congressman Andrew Volstead, his wife Nellie (born in Scotland), and their only daughter, Laura. Laura, whose hair looks like it has been lovingly curled and braided, affectionately rests her hand on her mother’s shoulder and lessens the formality of the photo.
Andrew Volstead didn’t build this white clapboard structure in Granite Falls, Minn., but he added the porch and watched the trees get tall enough to provide it with shade. The prairie town holds the distinction of belonging to two counties, Chippewa and Yellow Medicine. Renville County is so close that some online sources list it as sharing a chunk of the town. The house falls in Yellow Medicine County.
Amendment, a now infamous, if noble, attempt to eradicate recreational drinking from America. Born in eastern Minnesota to pioneer Norwegian Americans, as a young lawyer Volstead migrated west to Granite Falls, an agricultural prairie town on the Minnesota River, where he served as country prosecutor, city attorney, mayor, and then as a U.S. Congressman from 1903 to 1923. What he was proudest of, the plaque outside his door attests, was the CapperVolstead Act, passed in 1922 and still in effect, which makes an exception to antitrust laws by giving farmers the right to band together in locally This cast iron head of Volstead in a top hat with a big nose and an open mouth was a bottle opener owned cooperatives.

“Let’s review our manners,” she shrilled to be heard over the chaos of excited comment. “What are we going to do with our hands?” she asked. “DON’T TOUCH ANYTHING!” chorused a dozen little voices that were still in the fingernails-onblackboard vocal range. “What is an antique?” she belted. “SOMETHING THAT’S VERY, VERY OLD!” “And ….?” “WORTH A LOT OF MONEY!” “’Very valuable’ is a nicer way to say it.” “VERY VALUABLE IS A NICER WAY TO SAY

They sounded like the subsonic buzzing sound of an irate wasp nest. As they passed through the door, the pile of customer cookies on a plate near the coffee urn miraculously disappeared. These kids were quick; I didn’t even see their hands move. My work mate, Penny, and I stood behind the service counter with our jaws

“Why don’t we let one of these nice ladies tell us about it?” said the chaperone. I looked at Penny. Penny looked at me. “I’ll give you the brownie that’s in my lunch bag,” said Penny. She had a deal. I’ve been known to dare quite a bit for a brownie. I started explaining a pansy bowl to the cookie munchers. I had to back up to explain what a pansy was. Then I had to back up and explain why pansies had short stems, but tulips didn’t. Then I had to back up and explain how the water got into the small slot. I had broken into a profuse sweat by the time I concluded by asking the kids to imagine their dish full of the velvet faces of pansies. “UH-UH! THAT’S NOT RIGHT!’ shouted the cat-dish boy. YOU PUT A BALL IN THIS SLOT HERE, AND THE CAT CHASES IT AROUND! “Many people spend years collecting cat dishes ….er, pansy bowls,” said the chaperone. “We should respect their opinions.” “HAH!” said the cat dish boy. “HEY!” said another urchin. “THAT’S NOT AN ANTIQUE! Not everybody was anti-Prohibition. This cast iron memento in the shape of an ax, the likes of which Temperance-driven Carrie Nation was said to have wielded, serves no purpose except to celebrate Prohibition.

The Volstead Act took effect in mid-January 1920. That spring, The New York Times singled out Laura Volstead, linking her to the infamous act: “Girl secretaries of Congressmen created a sensation last week when they appeared . . . tripping gayly through the corridors of the House office building garbed in . . . becoming overalls.” The list includes, second from left, “Miss Laura Volstead, Who . . . The Old Times The Volstead House will soon be open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In the meantime, and always for groups of over 10, please call 320 564-3743 to set up an appointment.
Volstead House Cont. from page 8
Granite Falls is almost equally proud of Volstead’s daughter, Laura, who graduated from George Washington University, worked in Washington, D.C., as a secretary for her father, and in October 1928 married New Yorker-turned-Alaskan Carl Loman, son of a judge, and moved with him to Nome, Ala., where they took advantage of a few rare hours of winter sunshine to don parkas and have their photo taken with some very tame reindeer. Not coincidentally, Loman made a name for himself as The Reindeer King of Alaska. The Volstead home has a copy of the autobiography he ultimately published in 1953, Fifty Years in Alaska.
family home is a pleasure to visit, by far its most uniquely entertaining artifacts are those associated with Prohibition. Among them is a bottle opener in a caricature of Volstead’s face. It was once screwed to a wall or cupboard through holes in his big Norwegian ears, keeping the device steady while a thirsty farmer or proprietor pried a bottle cap loose in Volstead’s open mouth. From a decanter in the shape of a Volstead-faced puppy to a volume of Prohibition Songs, Volstead’s universal identification with Prohibition cannot be denied, and at this distance, definitely should be enjoyed.
Linda Simpkins lives in Sauk Centre, Minn., and is editor of the Old Times.

November 2016 What’s the fascination of a ceramic chicken figure or an old empty beer can? “THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS! I’VE GOT ONE JUST LIKE IT IN MY TOY BOX!” shouted the boy, while shoving his classmates in order to get to the door. “ME TOO!” “ME TOO!” “ME TOO!” dozens of little voices called as they headed back to their bus. The shop emptied in a whirlwind. “Why do people collect old empty beer cans?” asked Penny. “Don’t ask me,” I said, chewing her egg salad sandwich. “I don’t understand this
business at all!” © 2016 Joan Sween Joan Sween, a former English teacher and dramaturge, is an antiques dealer in southeastern Minnesota who has written three books: Nice Girls Don’t Bite, a paranormal mystery featuring two Minnesota Nice antiques dealers; a collection of her columns titled Dealer’s Choice; and Deathblow: The Encore Killer Always Returns. ashtrays, “operator” dolls, keychains, shot glasses, and bellshaped paperweights. Consumer giftware also capitalized on the motif, with telephoneinspired salt-andpeppers, cookie jars, refrigerator magnets, ornaments, jewelry, sheet music, and handbags. A 1976 Bell Telephone fantasy collage celebrated the telephone’s 100th birthday. Famous folk, from Abraham Lincoln to Shirley Temple, were shown making phone calls, “just to talk.” In today’s texting world, that may seem amusingly quaint. After all, these weren’t, by any stretch of the “Distinctive phones from Northwestern Bell.” The imagination, “smart 1976 Bell “Design Line.” phones.” On the other hand, they were there only when we actually wanted them. Maybe they were smarter than we think.
