The birth of the Christmas Seal

Dr. Edward Trudeau, the first tuberculous-infected doctor to recover through rest, direct sunshine, and cool clean air. He started the first tuberculous clinic in the United States and was the founding president of the National Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association.

by James Neagbour Edward Trudeau was dying. A medical school graduate with a young wife and a small child, his being diagnosed with the White Plague at 25 years of age had destroyed his hopes for an idyllic life. Trudeau isolated himself away from his family in a secluded cabin in the Adirondack Mountains. There in upstate New York, he waited to meet death --but instead he found life. He recovered from tuberculosis, the most fatal of diseases. Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau published his findings of fresh cold air, bed rest, and direct sunlight as the miracle cure. Even though most doctors scoffed at Trudeau’s findings, he then opened the first tuberculosis treatment

The 1943 Christmas Seal was designed using Penelope Groll from Blooming Prairie, Minn., as a model. Penelope was convalescing at a New York tuberculous sanatorium when she was photographed by Nickolas Muray and sketched for the seal design by Andre Dugo.

The double-barred cross and a greeting from Santa adorns an ad for Christmas Seals in 1930.

The first American Christmas Seal (on left) was designed by Emily Bissell in 1907, and the variation (on right) was issued that same December to extend the anti-tuberculous campaign through New Year’s.

In 1904 the National Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association was formed with Trudeau as its first president, and, since they saw themselves as starting a crusade against tuberculosis, they chose for their symbol an emblem from the first crusades – the double barred cross.

The Old Times

Countless celebrities have promoted Christmas Seals over the years. In 1962 it was Lassie and Timmy who were featured on posters and counter displays.

With the end of World War I, the 1919 Christmas Seal campaign focused Americans’ attention on battling an equally deadly enemy that was closer to home – tuberculous.

Santa holds a giant-sized replica of the 1928 Christmas Seal in his red-mittened hands. The toys peaking out of his bag are a poignant reminder that children’s lives are precious and fragile. December 7, 1930. Patients at the Owasso, Minn., anti-tuberculosis hospital for children enjoy the brisk cold air and direct sunlight while skiing and putting up Christmas Seal posters. The temperature that day reached a high of 31 degrees. Over 65 YEARS of Lighting Expertise!

The Old Times

With America involved in World War I, the regular Christmas Seal campaign was suspended and in its place was the Christmas Roll Call. When you donated $1 to the American Red Cross, you were put on the Christmas Roll Call and received a printed envelope containing a small, 10-stamp sheet of Christmas Seals.

Volunteers started selling the stamps in the post office lobby just days before Christmas, but sales were slow. It quickly became evident to Miss Bissell that she could not raise the needed $300 before New Year’s. The Christmas Seal crusade against tuberculosis was failing. In desperation Emily went to the newspaper office in Philadelphia, where she pleaded her cause. Columnist Leigh Hodges decided on the spot that her cause was just, and the slogan “Stamp out tuberculosis” was perfect. The newspaper not only agreed to publicize the Christmas Seal campaign but to sell the seals in their

Since many people sent Christmas cards and New Year’s greetings, she had gained herself another week. The newspaper published facts about tuberculosis and the only known cure every day. President Cleveland threw his support behind the Christmas Seal campaign, and $3,000 was raised through donations from the seals, more than enough money to save

“O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!” Collectible Christmas tree pins

Monet “zigzag” tree, white rhinestone and gold. $15-20.

by Donald-Brian Johnson What kicks off the holiday season at your house? Some folks start baking Christmas cookies (or eating them). Others begin unraveling myriad strings of Christmas lights. And then there are those who don their first Christmas tree pins of the season. If sweaters festooned with sequined reindeer aren’t quite your cup of Christmas tea, Christmas tree pins provide a more subtle, yet equally sparkly, salute to the season. Their glittering blend of brilliant metal and glistening gemstones has made them yuletide’s most popular jewelry. Just check out the thousands—yes thousands—listed for sale daily on eBay. No two Christmas tree pins are quite alike. Season after season, from Thanksgiving right up until Christmas

Day (and spilling over into those 12 days after), collectors can pin on an entire forest of Christmas tree pins, without ever once being stabbed by a repeat. They’re quite literally the gift that keeps on giving. The first massproduced Christmas tree pins stretched their branches skyward in the 1940s. Dilated? No problem, I know the mall like the back of my hand.

by Joan Sween I patted on the front door of the mall until I felt the handle, pulled, and walked in. My work partner, Jenny, was already there; the coffee was brewing. “Why were you slapping the door?” she asked.

“Just looking for the handle,” I said. “I had an early morning eye exam, my eyes are dilated, and the world looks fuzzy.” “Good heavens!” she said. “And you drove here? You could have been in an accident!” “Nah, not a problem,” I said. “You see a big fuzzy blob coming at you on the freeway, you just stay to the right.” “How are you going to work?” she asked. “I’ll be okay. This dilation will wear off in a6-16-09 couple hours or so.”

Just then the door chimed, and a tall, fuzzy blob entered the shop. “Good morning, Sir,” I greeted cheerily. “Are you trying to be offensive?” the blob asked in a soprano voice. “Sorry,” I said. “My mistake.” I quickly gave her the story of the early eye exam and the dilation. I finished with, “Please browse all you like; I’ll check to see how your doing in a little while.” I gave the lady time to shop and passed the time eating some of the cookies set out for the customers. I had to pat around until I found them. They were in some sort of new holder, stacked in rows one behind the other. “Bleah!,” I said, trying to chew and swallow. “These cookies taste like cardboard.” “You’re eating the manager’s business cards,” Jenny said. “Oh. Well, maybe

I’d better go check on my lady customer.” I found her fuzzy figure standing at the end of a booth. “How are you doing? I asked. “Is there anything I could help you find?” She didn’t answer. “Why don’t you tell me what you’re looking for, and I can help you look.” She didn’t answer. This was getting ridiculous. Why was the woman being so rude? “Erm …” whispered Jenny beside me. “You’re talking to a five-foot plastic lightup Santa.” “Oh.” The door chimed. “I’ll handle this one,” said Jenny as she headed for the service counter. I heard her greet someone. Then I heard a lady’s voice say, “May I leave her on the counter while I shop?” “Her?” Does she call her purse “Her?”

Oh, well, people are strange. I know a lot of people who give their car a name. I decided to head for the rest room, feeling my way along, trying to remember how the aisles were
