A neighborhood presence for 100 years Be Our Guest

The Church of the Incarnation shortly after its completion in 1919 at the corner of Pleasant Avenue South and 38th Street in Minneapolis. Incarnation’s French-born architect Emmanual Masqueray clearly followed the European model of churches: A substantial structure dominating the urban landscape, a bell tower visible from far off, a building clearly recognizable as a church, integrated into the neighborhood in a way that reminds the people of the building’s purpose and importance to parishioners. (Photo courtesy of the Minnesota Historical Society)

By Tad Bornhoft MINNEAPOLIS-When I started researching the history of my parish for its 100th anniversary celebration, it occurred to me that my wife and I had been at the church for over a quarter of that time. That gave me

A bas relief sculpture of a cross on the front of the pulpit. Jesus, depicted with the crown of thorns he wore when he was nailed to a wooden cross, is in the middle. The four gospel writers, each of whom tell the story of Jesus in the New Testament, are portrayed as the four “living creatures” that surround God’s throne, as described in the Book of Revelations 4:7: Matthew, the winged man (or human angel); Luke, the ox; John, the eagle; and Mark, the lion.

A rose window is a large circular stained glass window above the central entrance to a church. Segments of stained glass radiate out from its center, resembling the unfolding petals of a rose. The rose window can be the initial element of iconography to those entering the church. Seen here from the altar, Incarnation’s rose window rises above the choir loft and depicts St. Cecilia, who symbolizes the central role of music to the liturgy.

enough perspective to look back and make note of some things that had changed from the time we were married, and also to contemplate the constant and stable attributes of parish life. The parish was begun at a time and place when much was new and people experienced more uncertainty than stability. Those who brought the church to

new neighborhoods wanted to offer a strength and steadiness to their worshipers. This solidity was in part presented to them through the strength and tradition of the church building. From the time he became archbishop of the diocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis in 1888, John Ireland sought to expand the

A triptych-styled stained glass window; the center window is approximately 12 feet high. The scene depicted is the Annunciation, the announcement by the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus, the Son of God, marking his Incarnation (Luke 1:2638). Mary is kneeling, being addressed by the angel. Above her is the dove representing the Holy Spirit, and above all is God the Father. Directly across the church is another triptych, depicting the Transfiguration of Jesus, an event before his crucifixion in which he discussed with Moses and Elijah two Old Testament figures, the upcoming accomplishment of his mission through suffering and death on the cross.

The cornerstone of the Church of the Incarnation was laid during a ceremony on August 5, 1917, with Archbishop John Ireland presiding. The text inscribed on the stone was taken from the Gospel of John, “The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.” Placed in a copper box within the St. Cloud red granite cornerstone was a sheet of vellum upon which was written the date of the ceremony and the names of the President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson; the governor of Minnesota, J.A.A. Burnquist; the Archbishop; and the pastor of the church, Father James Cleary. Copies of the Twin Cities’ daily newspapers and three local Catholic weeklies were also included.

the first parish church south of Lake Street in Minneapolis. To be called The Church of the Incarnation, the project was a step in faith, building a new church in a sparsely populated area on the city’s outskirts. Ireland and Masqueray knew each other well and had worked together for several years. The Frenchman had studied architecture in Paris and immigrated to the United States in 1887. He worked in New York until 1901, when he was appointed Chief of Design at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Mo., where he met

A bas relief sculpture of a lamb on the altar. The lamb represents Jesus, who Christians believe allowed himself, as the Son of God made man, to be sacrificed like a spotless lamb for the sins of the people. The medallions hanging below the altar on which the lamb lies represent the seven sacraments practiced by Catholics: Baptism, Penance, Eucharist, Confirmation, Matrimony, Holy Orders, and Extreme Unction Marble is a lovely, durable, and translucent stone long favored for making three-dimensional artwork. It is also valued by sculptors for its relative softness. The carving process begins with the making of a clay sculpture to size. Instruments are used to transfer measurements from the clay model to a block of marble to guide the sculptor. The carver makes use of increasingly refined tools and technique for chiseling, riffling (scraping o sawing), and filing the stone. Marble is also resistant to shattering, an attribute appreciated by carvers when their work was loaded into crates for a long voyage to Minneapolis. The marble used in Incarnation Church was probably quarried and carved in Pietrasanta, Italy, north of Pisa on the coast of northern Tuscany.

Ireland. The two men found they shared a love for magnificent French cathedrals. Ireland asked Masqueray to come to St. Paul and act as architect for the

new cathedral for his archdiocese. Masqueray stayed in St. Paul the rest of his life. He went on to design the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis and several Protestant and Catholic churches in the Midwest, as well

as cathedrals for Wichita, Kan., and Sioux Falls, S.D. Incarnation in Minneapolis would be Masqueray’s last project, and his largest

Along the walls lining the nave, the central part of the church where the congregation sits, are a series of windows above eye level known as a clerestory. The windows admit light without distracting worshippers by offering a view of the outside and, of course, are another venu for iconography. Featured here is a rendition of IHS, a shortened form of the name of Jesus Christ in Greek, dating from the third century.

A reproduction of an icon depicting Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The original was painted on wood with a gold leaf background in the 13th century, and its Byzantine style is highly symbolic. The Blessed Virgin Mary wears a dress of dark red, representing Jesus’s suffering and death. The blue mantle represents her perpetual virginity, the cloaked veil, her pure modesty. She is looking towards the faithful and holding Jesus, whose crown symbolizes his divinity, while the Archangels Michael and Gabriel hover near. In one interpretation, Jesus has been asleep, seen his future sufferings in a dream, and woken with a start, kicking off his sandal. His mother comforts him as she looks outward with pity toward those he will save. Above on the left, Saint Michael presents Jesus with the lance and sponge to be used at his crucifi ion. On the right, Saint Gabriel holds nails and a three-bar cross. Over the figures are Greek letters naming the Mother of God, Jesus Christ, Archangel Michael, and Archangel Gabriel.

Cont. from page 4 “Our Lady of Victory,” instituted as an annual feast in the 16th century by Pope Pius V, commemorates a victory in battle attributed to prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This cast marble statute can be found at the back of the sanctuary. Marble casting allows faster and multiple production of a sculpture. After a mold is made of the original, a mixture of marble dust and resin is poured into the mold and allowed to cure. The mold is separated to release the sculpture, which may require some finishing work to remove imperfections. Often cast marble sculptures are then patinated (painted) like this one to produce the final piece

Baptisms at Incarnation were originally performed in the Shrine Room, a marble-lined room off the vestibule at the entrance of the church. A repository in the room stored the oils and other items used for anointing at baptisms. On its brass door Jesus is depicted being baptized by John the Baptist (Matthew 3:13-17).

The side altars at Incarnation each feature a pair of stained glass windows depicting saints or scriptural events. Here the left window shows St. Vincent DePaul, France’s 16th century champion of the poor. In the background is Notre Dame. The right window highlights St. Paschal Baylon, a 16th century Spaniard who had a great devotion to the presence of Christ in the consecrated bread and wine and who also was known for charity to the poor. He is often depicted, as here, in adoration before a vision of Jesus.

Classified ads for south Minneapolis homes would now and then mention the number of blocks from the listed property “to Fr. Cleary’s church,” referencing Incarnation’s first pastor. Today the prosperous neighborhood a mile east of Lakes Harriet and Calhoun encompasses lovely homes, locally

owned businesses, popular restaurants, and several more churches. It’s not a French cathedral, but stepping inside Incarnation gives a sense of majesty, reverence, and peace. The sanctuary of Incarnation, the space at the front surrounding the altar on three sides, is constructed of brick with stone trim and features a semicircular vaulted ceiling 60 feet high divided into five broad arches. Okay, I’ll admit it. You can teach an old dog new tricks. glass doors, woodwork, until the unit gleamed. Mary and I were speechless. Didn’t Linda realize that one little kid with a piece of chocolate candy would destroy all her work on the glass doors? Next, Linda fitted a mirror atop every wooden shelf of the side bookcase units. And then she polished and wiped every part of them. Whew, what a lot of work! Mary and I wondered if Linda had decent enough merchandise to put on those shelves. Was Linda planning to wipe things off every day?

and I were scheduled to work, we were eager to see Linda’s merchandise, and if-after all that work--she had sold anything at all. Now would come the time, we assumed, when we could start to be helpful about how to generate sales. We rushed over to Linda’s booth the minute we opened the mall. She had placed antique dolls on the top of her units where they couldn’t be handled without assistance. Each doll had a little stand-up sign that explained the doll’s age, manufacture, and other special features.

Mary and I were of the give-it-a-flick-of-thefeather-duster-everysix-months type of dealers. Then she topped it all off by placing some scent-producing units out of sight on the top of her showcase. Mary and I were horrified. We feared they were some of the noxious potpourri stinkums that some dealers favor. We found excuses to stroll past her booth space with our noses on full alert, but all was pleasant. If anything, there was a very faint suggestion of fresh linen. The next time Mary

by Joan Sween We were getting a new dealer in the mall. She would be taking a booth space that was eight feet by ten feet, bookcase units along the sides and a locking showcase across the back. Mary and I were on duty the day the new gal, Linda--who had never rented a mall booth previously-started moving in. Mary and I gave each other smiles of experience--not in a mean way, we just knew there was a definite learning curve for making a success of renting in a mall, and we would eventually need to think of sensitive ways to point out her mistakes to Linda and to offer helpful hints. She started by hauling in a small roll of high-end carpet cut to exactly fit her new booth’s floor space.27 Mary and I rolled our 65 eyes. Linda would discover the wisdom of that decision after the first muddy spring day. Then Linda carried in large slabs of mirror and completely mirrored the back wall of her showcase. Next she used glass cleaner 65 and wiped and scrubbed and rubbed every inch of her showcase-Mora mirrors, glass shelves,

why all that unnecessary work isn’t delivering a great many sales.” “I wonder if she’s made any sales at all?” I mused. We went to the sales file at the service counter and looked behind Linda’s dealer number. It was jampacked with receipts. There was almost no room for anyone else. Just then Linda came in, carrying a big box. “I’m new at this,” she said. “Is it usual to have to restock one’s booth every other day?” I forget what we muttered in response, but after Linda left, Mary said, “Maybe I’ll go shopping for some carpet tonight.” “Me too,” I said. “I think I’ll stock up on glass cleaner.” © 2017 Joan Sween Joan Sween, a former English teacher and dramaturge, is an antiques dealer in southeastern Minnesota who has written three books: Nice Girls Don’t Bite, a paranormal mystery featuring two Minnesota Nice antiques dealers; a collection of her columns titled Dealer’s Choice; and Deathblow: The Encore Killer Always Returns. She is also an accomplished playwright whose works include the drama, The First Woman, referring to Mary Surratt, who after being convicted of aiding in President Lincoln’s assassination became the first woman to be executed by the U.S. government.
