Brimming with antiques SPYHOUSE COFFEE ROASTERS
Johnson’s St. Paul Spyhouse is months from its July 2017 opening, but he is already scouting Minnesota antiques shops for sugar shakers and other items to add a touch of old-time ambiance to the newest addition to the Spyhouse family. This ringed-glass pair looks great next to a brass lamp. (Photos by Britt Aamodt unless otherwise noted).
Christian Johnson, a longtime antiques buff, has scrounged local antiques shops and shows to create a distinctly different look for each of his four Minneapolis Spyhouse Coffee Roasters locations: Whittier Spyhouse on Nicollet Avenue; Northeast Spyhouse on Broadway; North Loop Spyhouse on Washington Avenue North; and Uptown Spyhouse on Hennepin Avenue. His next venture will open on Snelling Avenue in St. Paul. (Photo courtesy of Christian Johnson)

by Britt Aamodt MINNEAPOLIS – Maybe the fascination with old beautiful objects began with the fire sale. “So my friend’s dad hired four of us to throw away the clothes and whatever was damaged by the fire,” Christian Johnson said, seated in his office in what used to be the Land O’ Nod mattress factory in Northeast Minneapolis. Johnson’s friend’s dad was a banker, and the property and nearly everything in it had been ravaged by fire. This was in North Dakota, where Johnson

Mid-Century Modern then,” Johnson said about his first café opening. “Herman Miller. Charles and Ray Eames. The chair made for the Time-Life building in New York, that was my favorite chair.” The executive chair,
designed by Charles Eames for the TimeLife building’s sleek 1950s lobbies, was upholstered in leather or fabric on an aluminum base and frame. Johnson still loves the chair. Initially, he gave the first Spyhouse a modern vibe. There were Barcelona chairs, chrome arc lamps, and
an Eames cabinet speaker. What the young entrepreneur discovered, however, was that the clientele could be rough on furniture. So he swapped out pieces for sturdier alternatives. But vintage remains everywhere, from the hand-painted ads (for cigarettes and 25-cent
haircuts) to the RCA Victor tube set. Johnson opened his second Spyhouse on Hennepin Avenue in a 1907 brownstone. Tin ceilings and exposed brick define a narrow space, which is opened up by the addition of beveled mirrors. Mirrors are a recurring theme in Spyhouse cafes, along with vintage maps and images of John Kennedy and Franklin Roosevelt. Johnson found his

by Donald-Brian Johnson And, as of April 6, 1917, the Yanks finally were coming. That’s when Congress officially approved a declaration of war on the German Empire. The decision of 100 years ago resulted in an outpouring of patriotic expression not seen since the Civil War. This time, however, the nation joined together in facing an external enemy. Defeating that enemy called not only for military might, but also for a unified effort on the home front.

America.” That one had to wait for the dawn of another war and the vocals of Kate Smith.) Yip Yip Yaphank concluded with “We’re On Our Way To France,” the soldier/ performers marching up the theatre aisles, and back to their barracks. The final
Broadway performance on September 14, 1918, however, had a different ending. This time, as the cast (led by Sgt. Berlin) exited singing “We’re On Our Way to France,” their march took them to the troop carrier destined to transport them overseas. For today’s collectors, World War I
sheet music is an attractive collectible. The artwork is generally superb, done by such illustrators as Norman Rockwell. Some collectors may want the work of a specific composer. Others may wish to collect as many cover variations of a specific song as possible. The price is certainly right: lots of 10 or so assorted pieces in acceptable condition often show up on eBay for a “buyit-now” price of under $30; single mint copies by a specific composer or artist are in the $2550 range. World War I marked a tipping point

Empty, empty.” “For all intensh and purposhes, empty,” said Patricia. “Maybe they were jush a teenshy tiny not-empty, but we made shure they were legal.” “A teensy tiny notempty,” I said. “They still had something in them?” “Yeah.” “What?” “Bourbon.” “They were full of bourbon!” I was flabbergasted. I helped myself to a cup of coffee. “No, not full, full,” said Anne. “More like two shwallows full.” “So what did you do with the two swallows?” I asked. “Well, we shwallowed them,” said Patricia in an isn’tit-obvious voice. “So . . . Sandy brought in 15 Jim Beam bottles, each with two swallows inside . . .” I poured myself some more coffee. “And it would be illegal for Shandy to shell them like that, so we were getting rid of the evidensh,” said Anne. “. . . fifteen bottles, two swallows each,” I continued . . . 30 swallows. swallows of bourbon, did you?” “Good heavensh, no!” said Patricia. “We couldn’t have held all that! We poured quite a bit of it off into another container!” I took another shlow ship of delishious coffee as I thanked the mall’sh lucky shtarsh that Anne and Patrisha weren’t falling-down drunk by now. “Maybe it would be a good idea if you two shwitched over to coffee and made an effort to shober up,” I suggested. “Coffee!” they both blurted simultaneously. “Not coffee!” “Why?” I asked. “What’sh wrong with coffee? Ishin’t it what mosss people use to shober up? Where did you two pour off the extra bourbon?” They both looked at me with red faces. “Well?” I asked. “Where’sh the leftover bourbon? You mush have put it shomewhere? Shomeplash? In shome short of container?” “Um . . . yesh. Shomeplashe,” giggled Anne. “Sho, where?” I asked. “In the coffee!” they shrieked, tipsily knocking things off the counter. “Ah!” said I. “That makesh perfect shenshe. All nishe and legal. Pour me a little more coffee would you?”
