Elephants. Just one of an infinite number of categories a collector can focus on.

Buttons don’t just come in plastic. They can be made of rubber, pewter, fabric, black glass, and pearl, as demonstrated by Kris Peterson, program manager of the Minnesota Button Society. (Photos by Les Broich)

by Virginia Broich M E N D O T A HEIGHTS, MINN.- Question: “Button, button. Who’s got the button?” Answer: The Minnesota Button Society and their enthusiastic program manager, Kris Peterson. To some, a button is nothing special. It’s something they see in their everyday lives. But to collectors, buttons represent works of art. Peterson, who began collecting when she was nine years old, credits a neighbor for initiating a button collectors group. In 1957,

Cont. on page 3 “It’s All Fun and Games with Buttons,” last year’s theme of the Minnesota State Button Society, was exemplified in this first-place presentation. Th contestant assembled examples of equipment, pastimes, games, and sports. The judge particularly liked the blowing bubbles button of reverse painted glass in metal. This year’s theme is “Bird Watching on Button Lane.”

Excerpt from a chart depicting different types of buttons. Collectors can use these distinctions to organize their collections.

Mrs. Ethel Malone started “The Jolly Juniors.” Peterson, along with her sister and three other neighborhood kids, attended meetings of this group, the first junior button organization in Minnesota. “Mrs. Malone ignited the spark for me. She had a passion in her for button collecting and shared it with her girls,” Peterson said. For six years, Peterson accumulated what she calls a “kid” collection, in which the buttons were housed in boxes and tins rather than sorted and mounted on cards. In this type of collection, the range of texture consists of more plastic and Bakelite. The oldest button in her collection is probably 1930s Bakelite. She feels that a kid collection is “stuck in a time period rather than a collection created over

Another plus to her early assortment of buttons included ones her uncle brought back for her when he traveled around the world. Everything in her collection is at least 50 years old. Adult collections contain more specific themes and areas of interest, according to Peterson. “The collector sorts out and arranges the buttons on cards. It helps, as a collector, to get the full complement of something,” Peterson said. If collectors want to enter button contests, they must follow the rules in the Blue Book, published annually. It informs collectors how to create a card and qualify. In

Peterson found valuable information in this used booklet she bought for 25 cents at the button show one year. “This is where I discovered The Jolly Juniors started in Minnesota,” she said. The booklet details a 20-year history of the Minnesota State Button Society, from 1943-1963. Mrs. Malone, founder of Peterson’s Jolly Juniors club, co-authored the booklet, making it an extraspecial artifact.

This pearl button chart includes tinted, inlaid, polished, cameo, and painted buttons. Pearl buttons were made from the soft inside bed of a clamshell. In the U.S., Muscatine, Iowa, became known as the “pearl button capital of the world.” Located on the Mississippi River, the town was ideally located to harvest clams for manufacture. The decimation of clams and the development of plastic buttons led to the decline of the pearl button industry in Iowa and around the world.

The Old Times

Right now, this poor fellow is bundled under a barrage of blankets . . .

“To all who want more extra money than ever before!” Wallace Brown magazine ads, like this one from the 1950s, had would-be card salesmen ordering in droves.

offered an enticing variety: the “Royal Deluxe All-Occasion Assortment” (“all embossed, with enhancements including jewels, flocking, feathers, and bronzing”); the “T’allIn-Fun Set” (“terrific designs that tickle the funny bone in the new smart TALL shape”); and the “Christmas Wonderland Splendor Collection” (“beautiful sparkling cards glowing and glistening with old-fashioned Christmas cheer”). Top of the line though, and just right for the futuristic ’50s and ’60s: “Surprise Action PopUp Cards,” “leaping

unfolded, and there was no telling what might spring forth: a fire truck with towering ladder; a frolicking kangaroo, her pouch filled with well-wishing joeys; a “get well” donkey kicking up its heels; a

The Old Times

Minnesota: April sleet, May hallucinations

by Joan Sween The song says April showers bring May flowers. That may be true elsewhere, but in Minnesota the truth is that April sleet brings May showers. Nor does Minnesota mess around with wimpy May “showers.” We deal with deluge, flood, hail, cloudburst, torrent, downpour, cats and dogs, pitchforks and axe handles, and buckets. I was violently reminded of this recently in May. We were under a severe rainstorm warning and advised to stay off the roads. Good advice, but I had to make a trip to the shop to deliver a collectible that I had promised a customer. After fighting the 60 mph winds and blinding sheets of rain, I made it to the shop, trembling with relief. However, I still had to get from my car to the front door. I fought to get my driver’s door open, tried to run to the shop door, and was pushed flat by the wind

and water. I crawled to the shop door, pulled myself up, and dashed in, along with about 185 gallons of water.

We deal with deluge, flood, hail, cloudburst, torrent, downpour, cats and dogs, pitchforks and axe handles, and buckets. A wind gust sent me flying and knocked my head against the edge of the service counter. I fell into the flooded floor. I saw blackness. “We can’t just let her lie there in the water,” said Anne. “We should pick her up.” “How much does she weigh?” asked Patricia. “You have a point.”

“Maybe we should ask a strong customer to help us.” “But there’s no one here. The place is totally empty.” My dazed mind was trying to regain consciousness. ‘No one here. Totally empty.’ Oh no! Somehow I had slipped into another dimension and I was on the Mary Celeste, the brigantine, discovered adrift and deserted in the Atlantic Ocean, off the Azores Islands, on December 5, 1872. “Well, we’ve got to elevate her somehow and get the water pumped out of her,” said Patricia. “What if we draped her over a blanket rack?” said Anne. “We could use that old jack that Jeff has in his booth.” I could feel something hard slipped under my stomach. With a click-clank, click-clank my middle started to elevate. Eventually, something was shoved under me until I was bent over

with my head and feet hanging down and water pouring off me. I was afraid to open my eyes. I opened them. Everything was upside down! Oh no! I was on ‘The Poseidon Adventure!’ “That’s getting rid of the water,” said Anne. “She looks a little green,” said Patricia. “Is she sick?” “Seasick,” said Anne, giggling. Seasick? Oh yes, my head hurt. My eyes wouldn’t focus. The world was going up and down. Up and down in 40-foot waves. Oh no! I was on a sinking swordboat in ‘The Perfect Storm!’ Wait! I tried to stand up, and saw I was clinging to the service counter in the shop. In the shop! I was okay! This had all been a hallucination from hitting my head! “I think she’s getting a grip,” said Patricia. “She still looks pretty woozy,” said Anne.

Dealer’s Choice

By Joan Sween Woozy. Yes indeedy. And I was about to lose my breakfast. ‘Bathroom,’ I mumbled. ‘Sick.’ “The storm made the city sewer system overflow, “ said Anne. “We’re not supposed to use the bathroom until tomorrow.” Oh no! I wasn’t okay. I was still in another dimension. I was on that cruise liner that had three days of overflowing toilets! I started to sink to the floor. “Take deep breaths,” said Patricia as she slid a stool under me. “We’ll get the hair dryer out of Phyllis’ booth and dry you out.

Imagine you’re on a sunlit beach with warm breezes blowing over you.” I relaxed. I imagined I could feel the warm breeze and the soft sand. My halfdrowned brain pictured me as a ‘Sports Illustrated’ swimsuit antiques dealer. © 2017 Joan Sween

She is also an accomplished playwright whose works include the drama, The First Woman, referring to Mary Surratt, who after being convicted of aiding in President Lincoln’s assassination became the first woman to be executed by the U.S. government.
