the name says it all
A play of color is what Lu-Ray Pastels is all about. (Photos by James Cihlar)
A covered sugar bowl in Windsor Blue and a creamer in Persian Cream. The swirl handle on top and the strapped handles on the sides of the creamer are examples of some of the few embellishments in this relatively restrained line.
by Jim Cihlar During the depths of the Great Depression, Americans had to make do in many arenas of their lives. When jobs were scarce and money was tight, grand extravagances were out of reach. And yet, American homes still
managed to find affordable ways to add a little pizzazz to their everyday routines— particularly to their tabletops. Many added a little sparkle to mealtime by using colorful Depression Glass; others embraced the wildly popular
Fiestaware. Launched in 1938, Lu-Ray Pastels was a subtle yet still colorful alternative for those looking to add some luster to their daily lives. Taylor, Smith and

A Windsor Blue teapot. The earliest issues had a flat tea spout. This is a later issue.
A selection of Lu-Ray bowls. Starting from top, a 10-inch salad bowl in Persian Cream, a nine-inch bowl in Surf Green, three eight-inch bowls or “nappies” in Surf Green, Windsor Blue, and Sharon Pink. A platter-shaped bowl at 12 inches in Windsor Blue, and four “lug soup” bowls in the four standard Lu-Ray colors.
Cake plate in Persian Cream
Lu-Ray Pastels were produced from 1938 to 1961. The early pieces were nearly all marked; later pieces were less frequently marked. T.S. & T. stands for the manufacturer, Taylor, Smith and Taylor; 10 indicates the month, October, and 41 indicates the year, 1941, this piece was made. These marks likely were a way to maintain quality control, but now they aid collectors.

Taylor (T.S.&T.) launched the Lu-Ray Pastels line in summer 1938. They were capitalizing on the trend of bright dinnerware that first began in 1930 with California pottery company J.A. Bauer’s intense primary color dishes. Fiestaware was launched in 1936 by the Homer Laughlin Company of Newell, W.Va. T.S.&T. saw an opportunity amidst all the brightly colored dinnerware of the period. “The company recognized that not all American women wanted their meatloaf
and mashed potatoes on neon colored dinner plates” write Kathy & Bill Meehan in Collector’s Guide to Lu-Ray Pastels. Instead, T.S.&T. aspired to “completing the color cycle in modern dinnerware” with “delightfully delicate pastels.” Taylor, Smith and Taylor was founded in East Liverpool, Ohio, in 1899, with a factory in Chester, W.Va., where it produced multiple lines until closing in 1981. The Lu-Ray Pastel line was in production from 1938 to 1961. The name was originally suggested by one of the company’s lead sales-
men who had recently returned from visiting the colorful LuRay Caverns of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Some of the other collectible lines in T.S.&T.’s history include Vistosa, CoralCraft, and Pebbleford. Collectors of Lu-Ray Pastels are aided by the company’s frequent if not entirely consistent use of a backstamp marking not only the product line but the month and year of production. If Fiestaware occasionally introduced new colors to their

--PRESS RELEASE HUTCHINSON, MINN.--The Treasure Shed in Hutchinson, Minn., is moving to a new building located at 1110 Hwy. 7 E., just 1½ blocks west of their current location. The shop will be closed for moving from July 2431 and reopen at 1110 Hwy. 7 E. on August 1. The Treasure Shed is home to 55 dealers who strive to continually restock with quality and affordably priced items including antiques, collectibles, yard and garden accessories, home décor, painted and refinished furniture,
repurposed items, sports, records, toys, tools, signs, jewelry and more. Most dealers plan to make the move, and the shop has room for 10 more. For information call 320-587-7770. After remodeling the existing space and adding an additional 3500 square feet, the building will be slightly larger with an improved layout. It is handicap accessible and will be more energy efficient, including brighter LED lighting and a new heating/cooling system. Many booths will be offering discounts in the weeks to come.

The covered casserole, here in Persian Cream, was made only from 1938 to 1948. Taylor, Smith and Taylor at one point marked some of the larger pieces for production only in Persian Cream, the most popular color.
Lu-Ray was just one line offered by Taylor, Smith and Taylor, and its shapes were inspired by other lines, including the Empire and Laurel lines. Not marked Lu-Ray but T.S. & T., this grouping shows similar shapes in a set of handled soup bowls and saucers with decals and gold trim, spotted at Simply Vintage in West Saint Paul.

To contemporary eyes Lu-Ray Pastels might not look overly subtle, but in historical context they were—in comparison, that is, to Bauer, Fiestaware, and T.S.&T.’s own “festive” line, Vistosa. The shapes of the major pieces were largely consistent throughout the product’s run and have an elegant restraint to them. They are missing any decals or painted embellishments, adding to their timeless appeal. The textural decorations are limited to a swirled
knob atop lidded pieces, a strap decoration on the joint of handled pieces, and tabs on handled or “lug” soup bowls and platters. The coasters feature an incised stylized flower. For the collector,
some shapes are still relatively affordable and easy to find, including dinner plates, chop plates, platters, bowls, tea cups and saucers, while others

And an ornamental object of the past, when transplanted to today, becomes the must-have focal point of a modern décor--a focal point so old it’s new. Among the easiest items to incorporate in a modern environment are bronze figurines and sculptures. They are just as visually relevant today as they were during their first wave of popularity, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Bronze first appeared some 4000 years ago (that’s how the “Bronze Age” got its name). It proved particularly suitable for
tools since, unlike iron, bronze was not prone to rust or fracture. From bronze as a utilitarian metal to bronze as a medium for artistic expression was a short step. After initial use as a decorative accent on ancient temples, bronze attracted the attention of sculptors. Unlike marble, the lesser density of bronze required less interior support. Heroic figures sculpted from marble stood or sat. Those in active poses (outstretched arms, extended legs) ran the risk of limbs snapping off due to their weight. With bronze, more natural positioning was possible. Bronze also allowed for more specific detailing in the ADMISSION $7 $1 OFF with this ad!

mold. Color variations were even possible, with a bronze sculpture’s exterior gilded, or given a chemical “bath”, thus transforming the original bronze coloring to green, black, reddish brown,
or even a light orange. Although not in favor during medieval times, bronze sculpture returned to the forefront during the Renaissance. The Industrial

Revolution of the mid19th century gave bronze another boost. Thanks to improvements in the manufacturing process, “limited editions” came into vogue. Now, a foundry could cast, from the sculptor’s original mold, as many copies (“editions”) as were warranted. Most affordable were the whimsical items known as “Vienna Bronzes,” first produced in the 1850s. These tiny sculptures of humans, animals, objects, and edifices were exquisitely detailed and carefully cold-painted. Some even offered surprises: a shopper is draped in a

--PRESS RELEASE MONTICELLO, MINN.--Riverstreet Station Antiques of Monticello, Minn., has one thing no other antiques shop has—the original work of artist James Quentin Young. Young creates his work from old wood, metal, and found objects. An early advocate for recycling and renovating discarded items, he incorporates them into his works along with the dominant symbol of his Christian faith, the cross. His contemporary designs draw on his experience as an artist in the media of painting—he has a master’s of fine arts degree—jewelry making, and furniture restoration. His beautiful and

We could have done worse, but I’m not sure how
By Joan Sween “Well, here it is, July, the Independence month,” I said to my co-worker, Susan. “I suppose we should do some sort of thematic observance.” “We were going to do something like that
last year,” said Susan, “but we never got around to it. Remember, we ended up with two cartons of sparklers that we didn’t use and are still stuffed under Bill’s big showcase?” “This year we’ll be better. Let’s drag those
cartons out and see if the sparklers are still good.” Susan and I carried the cartons up front to an open area, right next to Kelly’s quilt display. I opened the top carton and reached in for a couple sparklers. Susan

put a match to the ends, and we waited to see if they still did their thing after being packed away for a year. They must have had plenty of time to dry out, because they suddenly burst into huge geysers of blinding blue flame. “Holy cow!” I shouted and dropped my handful back into the top carton, whereupon the whole carton went nuclear, joined by the bottom carton which activated the first stage of lift-off, sending the whole works up into the ceiling fan. We stood there with our mouths gaping open until the sizzling and smoke subsided. Our eyebrows were missing, the ceiling was covered with black soot, and Kelly’s quilt display was charred and smoking. We cleaned up all the mess we could reach. Undaunted, however, we looked for something else we could use to honor the occasion. The bar and grill next door to us had set up outdoor tables with big red, white, and blue umbrellas. They had crowds of diners enjoying lunch in the shade; surely we could do something just as nice. “How about all flags Bruce those bought at that VFW auction last January?” “Great!” I enthused. “We could ring the

We stood back and admired our handiwork for all of one minute until a huge semi went by on the freeway, creating a slipstream that ripped all our flags out of the grass and sent them whizzing north toward the bar and grill. closer examination we could see them in our neighbor’s outdoor dining area--skewering colorful umbrellas, burgers, watermelon, meatballs, croissants, piles of pasta, pork chops, burritos, and other plated viands. Everything on the tables was a patriotic porcupine of nationalism. “Quick, get inside!” yelled Susan, pushing me toward the shop door. She whisked us through the door, locked it, and began to run around the mall, turning off all the lights. “What are you doing?” I stammered. “Hide! Hide!” she hissed. “If that lunch crowd finds us, they’re going to kill us!” “Oh, it can’t be that bad,” I chuckled. “Surely they have a sense of humor.” Just then a mango with a flag staff run through it bounced off the glass of the front door. “Ulp! Maybe they haven’t had time to see the comic aspect yet,” I croaked. We stayed hidden in the protective mall for two hours, until the angry mob next door finally went home. But drat it, despite everything we still wanted to make an Independence Day display. We were scraping bottom for ideas, but eventually agreed on a tableau. We dragged two rocking chairs out to the porch, and using red, white, and blue table cloths and tea towels, fashioned long dresses and mob caps. We each sat in a rocking chair and pantomimed sewing flags. After all, next to George Washington, who’s more patriotic than Betsy Ross? © 2017 Joan Sween
