Gray County 4-H: Year-round activities for children to learn and grow By John Lee
jclee@thepampanews.com
While most extra-curricular activities follow the school calendar that runs from August to late May, Gray County 4-H runs year-round, with their “year” starting on Sept. 1. Following the registration fee, the rest of the cost varies from program to program. “You can do anything you want to do with the registration fee,” Gray County extension agent Joan Gray-Soria said. “If you’re going to show steer, obviously that’s going to be more expensive because you have to buy the steer and the food rather than if you’re going to do a foods project.” The Gray County 4-H has roughly 20 programs, some year-round and some seasonal, including, but not limited to: food nutrition, photography, consumer education, public speaking, sheep, goats, dog projects, archery, air pistol and many others. As mentioned before, some are seasonal and some are year-round depending on the project leaders. The program is also looking to add robotics and air pistol shooting. Gray-Soria said students learn much more than what their project entails at Gray County 4-H. “I think they learn leadership skills, life skills, they learn teamwork, they learn interviewing and public speaking skills,” Gray-Soria said. “They learn to manage their time.” Gray County 4-H services all of the kids (third grade to 12th grade) in Gray County including Lefors, Grandview-Hopkins, Pampa and would like to start a 4-H club in McLean. They also have a program that runs during the school year for kindergarten through second grade called 4-H clover kids. “The purpose of that group is to explore different parts of 4-H so they can figure out what they’re interested in,” Gray-Soria said. “The 4-H directed towards third grade and up is our competition 4-H. So we don’t do competition with our clover kids.” The students in 4-H are also very involved in the community and give back by donating dog food to the animal shelter, cleaning the
parks and ringing bells for the Salvation Army around Christmas time. Extension agent Mike Jeffcoat, who oversees the shooting sports, has seen the program continue to grow daily. Jeffcoat said the 4-H’ers involved in that program learn more than just how to hold a gun and reload it. “We teach discipline and the ability to work with others,” Jeffcoat said. “We try to get them to learn patience and concentrate on what they are doing. Safety is No. 1, of course. But when they learn all of the other stuff safety comes in.” Jeffcoat said the livestock programs have the preliminary work done in the June to validate the student owns and cares for the livestock. The student is expected to provide their own food and care for the animals. “They have some responsibility and it depends on them,” Jeffcoat said. “They have an animal that depends on them that needs fed, watered and cared for properly.” For more information on Gray County 4-H call 806-669-8033.

Chubby's Burrito Co.: Building relationships and burritos one bite at a time By Steven Watson
swatson@thepampanews.com
Let’s face it, the Dyer family has been serving Pampa and the entire Panhandle for many years, so it should come as no surprise that when Jason Dyer decided to open up Chubby's, the food would be nothing short of the best. “As for Chubby's, my dad and I wanted to do something different and he came up with the name and I was like that sounds good let’s do it,” said owner Jason Dyer. “And it’s been great so far. I really enjoy meeting the new people coming to town from Borger and Canadian and really all over the Panhandle. I’m happy to see new faces in here for sure.” To say the least, Chubby's is quite different from other restaurants in the the area in that it’s only competition is 60 miles away. “You have to expand and think of different things to keep up with the times. The barbecue place has been a great force for years and years. The steak house is doing great. Flipz and Hoagies are also doing well so it
(Chubby's) was something different.” The inspiration for Chubby's wasn’t in burritos at all but was going to be a little burger joint. But as time rocked along and trying some new things like Chipotles, the Dyers settled on burritos. One thing that does separate Chubby's from other burrito shops is the ingredients that they use. “We wanted to make sure it was all fresh, high quality ingredients,” Dyer said. “We use premium flank steak and not frozen chicken, and fresh veggies. I also do all the chips and salad bowls in house and we try to get them in and out as fast as we can.” Chubby's Burritos, who celebrated their five-year anniversary in January, has already become a huge success with its build your own burrito layout and only the freshest ingredients, but for Dyer it’s much more than that. There is already desire to expand to other areas especially with the results that they have seen in Pampa but loyalty to the customers comes first for Dyer. “I would like to open up more in the future but it’s tough to expand because you have to take care of those that take care of you first,” Dyer said. Anyone who has been to the restaurant can see the joy that Dyer has to serve the community and even more than that he said he enjoys getting to know his customers. Chubby's is quite popular with the high school crowd and according to Dyer, just getting to bring the kids joy in this way makes it all worth while. More awesome still is that Dyer knows a lot of these kids by name and has even built relationships with them simply by serving them good food. There has been talk of changes to both the venue and the menu but nothing concrete yet. With the current economic climate, starting a new business can prove challenging. “It’s been a rough couple of years,” Dyer said. “Some folks think it’s easy; it’s not easy. You got to marry it and know every nook and cranny about it and put the time in. I guess that’s something this family understands.” Dyer couldn’t express enough however that the most important aspect of this job for him was getting to know people and getting to serve them; that building relationships through this avenue of service is absolutely paramount in the food industry. While these build-your-own burrito shops are popping up all over the nation with at least three in Amarillo, planting one in Pampa is a testament to the ability of the Dyer family to recognize good ideas and an even greater testament by putting them to good use.

Go get a coney from Texas’ Coney Island By John Lee
jclee@thepampanews.com
Perched in downtown Pampa just east of City Hall and the Pampa Fire Department sits a cozy little diner that has been a staple in Pampa for decades. Coney Island has been in Pampa for more than 80 years, at it’s current location for around 55 years, and has recently been owned by Roger and Brenda Donelson since 2001. “Linda (Austin, manager) has been here a long time and Ted and John Gikas (long-time previous owners) couldn’t keep it going because of health reasons,” Brenda Donelson said. The Donelson’s remodeled the restaurant last summer and had previously put in a hot water heater and an air conditioner unit. Austin, who has worked at Coney Island since 1971, said being a part of the Coney is just like home. “Seeing all of these people for generations and watching the children grow up is like a way of life,” Austin said. “People look
forward to coming back and it’s a part of their memory and you’ve become a part of their memory.” Some notable repeats at Coney Island include Mike Ehrle of the radio, John Warner and several class reunions. “We have a memory book which a lot of people have signed,” Austin said. Donelson said she would love to add milkshakes and malts to the menu. The restaurant already added ice cream, which you can get for 75 cents a cup. The Coney Island has even inspired a similar hot dog shop in Dallas. “This place gets in your blood,” Austin said. “The family-like atmosphere and the fact that we stress customer service.” The Coney Island’s menu includes coneys, hamburgers, vegetable soup, cheeseburgers, ham sandwiches, stew and their famous pies. The Coney Island is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday. They can be reached at 806-669-9137.

In June 2017, Harrah’s Bar and Grill celebrates two year of business By John Lee
jclee@thepampanews.com
WHITE DEER — In 2015, Kelly Hartman and her family saw a need in White Deer for a business that could serve as restaurant where residents could bring their families, and as an establishment where laborers could have some drinks after work. From this need, the notion of Harrah’s Bar and Grill became a reality and in June 2015, the business opened in the heart of White Deer. “We had nothing in town,” Hartman said. “There was a definite need for someplace where people could have lunch, dinner, a nice place to go on weekends.” Taking the bar-and-grill approach was necessary because residents of White Deer who may want to go and have a drink would have to travel to Borger, Panhandle or Pampa. “It was someplace where people could stay in town (and drink) and not have to drive far,” Hartman said. Harrah’s menu is mostly American loaded with hand-made items including burgers, chicken fried steak, French fries and pizzas. “A lot of our items are hand-made,” Hartman said. “We cut our own steaks. Make our own hamburger patties, cut our own fries, steak fingers, chicken strips and soups.” Head chef Matthew Polster said roughly 80 percent of the menu is made up of these hand-made dishes. was very good, almost too busy for their seating of 123 patrons. “It’s hard to tell in a town the size of White Deer the type of reception we’d get,” Polster said. “But we have a large following from Pampa, Borger, Skellytown, McLean and Groom.” Harrah’s is a locally-owned restaurant that draws it’s name from the building the houses it. Classic pictures of the building, which used to be a diner/barber shop, can be found throughout the building. The business employs 23 employees, 11 cooks, eight servers and four managers. Along with two family-friendly rooms for dining, Harrah’s Bar and Grill has a full-service bar equipped with shuffle-board and pool tables and a gated patio with a fireplace and television for outside fun with cornhole and washer pits. The restaurant also has an upstairs room that can be used for private buffets and business meetings. “We want it to feel like a Chili’s or Applebee’s,” Hartman said. “You can come here with your family for dinner, but you can have a drink with dinner. Or you can just come have a glass of wine and relax.” Hartman and Polster said their most popular items are their burgers, steaks and chicken fried steak. Harrah’s is closed on Sundays with their dining room open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Their bar is open from 4 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Disc Golf: Fun and free entertainment Staff Report Pampa’s disc golf course has been around since the late 1990s but Kelley Dewey had a vision come to fruition in 2010 to renovate the course. Dewey said he first played disc golf while in Red River, N.M. He came back to Pampa to find there was a disc golf course but it was not up to today’s standards for courses and only had nine holes. The holes had tone poles and not baskets. “I got with Kathy Cota from Pampa EDC and told her a plan and a proposal. I also got with Donny Hooper from the city,” Dewey said. “I decided it was best to fund it myself. And came to needing about $500 per hole so we got a sponsor for all 18 holes.” Dewey said much like at a regular golf course, a sponsor’s sign is place on a tee box. He said some of the sponsors were Pampa EDC, Hudson Tire, Clifton Supply and several other businesses and individuals. At the time, Dewey worked at the prison so they were able to use inmates in need of community service hours to help lay concrete. The city helped him dig holes. In 2015, the city had a meeting and his wife proposed to name the disc golf course “Dewey Disc Golf Course.” “I am pretty lucky I guess to have it named after me,” Dewey said. “Disc golf is free to play. There is a Professional Disc Golf Association you can register with and my number is PDGA #4117.” Pampa’s course hosts an annual tournament: The Harvester Open. This will be the seventh year for the tournament. Stayed tuned to Top Of Texas Disc Golf and Pampa Disc Golf Club pages on Facebook as they post tournament information. Dewey said Borger, Canadian, Dalhart and Amarillo have disc golf courses and host tournaments as well. The average cost for a tournament is $25-30. Dewey said with Hastings closing, he isn’t sure where he will get his discs as that was the only place in town that had good discs. He said you can play with just one disc or many and the most expensive disc to buy is about $20.
“It is economically friendly. The holes are in feet not in yards,” Dewey said. “It has the same rules as ball golf but it goes faster. The longest hole is 504 feet on our course and the shortest is under 300 feet. You can walk and play a full round in an hour and a half.” The Pampa Disc Golf Course is located by the intersection of North Hamilton St. and West Pennsylvania Ave. just east of Hobart St. in Pampa. Looks like a parking lot but it is Pennsylvania Ave. Follow street around to the first tee. No parking lot - park in the street. For more information on the disc golf course in Pampa or disc golf in general, contact Kelley Dewey, wormsworld76@yahoo.com.

More than weights and treadmills: Pampa Youth and Community Center By John Lee
jclee@thepampanews.com
The Pampa Youth and Community Center, located at 1005 Harvester Avenue in Pampa, offers more than just weights and treadmills for a person to get their workout in. The center offers classes in zumba, intensity and regular, water aerobics, aquatic zumba, jazzercise, high intensity training as well as two racquetball courts, a basketball court and a swimming pool. “All of those (the classes) have been pretty popular as of late,” director Miah Ebel said. “We also have access to weighttraining instructors if anyone wants to look into that.” One of the more concerning issues with many gyms is waiting for another person to finish using equipment. That’s not an issue with the Youth Center. “We haven’t had a problem with people waiting,” Ebel said. “If we did have that issue we would do what we need to do to provide additional equipment. We have a pretty good setup with several stations and several bench press machines, inclines. We haven’t had a problem with waiting.” The pool is not available at the Youth Center during the school year when the Pampa High School swim team has it reserved

Pampa APA League By Steven Watson
swatson@thepampanews.com
The Pampa night life has something to offer everyone. One such thing is the Pampa branch of the American Poolplayers Association. In a joint effort from many local establishments, Pampa has put together a league worth boasting about and that continues to grow with more than 50 members and growing. The American Poolplayers Association (APA) was founded by professional poolplayers and Billiard Hall of Famers Terry Bell and Larry Hubbart in 1979 as the National Pool League, which became the American Poolplayers Association in 1981. The two realized the popularity of the sport, but knew, that different from other sports, there was no existing recreational league system. Today, the APA has grown to nearly 250,000 members and boasts more members than all other “national” leagues combined. There are nearly 300 APA Leagues throughout the U.S., Canada and Japan. APA League teams have the opportunity to advance to the APA World Pool Championships each summer in Las Vegas. In 2010, Guinness World Records recognized this event as the World’s Largest Pool tournament. In addition, the APA also hosts a second tournament, the APA Poolplayer Championships, in Las Vegas each spring. APA pays out a combined $2 Million annually at these tournaments. One of the keys to the success of the American Poolplayers Association is The Equalizer®, the unique handicapping and scoring
join the Pampa Country Club
system that makes it possible for players of different playing abilities — especially novices and beginners — to compete on an equal basis, much like they do in golf and bowling. The Equalizer® uses a formula that measures a player’s ability. With the establishment of the league, there is a pool tournament nearly every night of the week at places like Mojo’s Bar and Grill who hosts APA league matches on Monday nights, singles buy-in matches on Wednesday Nights, and Scotch Doubles buy-in tournaments on Friday nights.

Hidden Hills Golf Course ranked fourth-best in state Staff Report
The Hidden Hills Golf Course is one of two courses in the Pampa area. Having opened May 19, 1990, Hidden Hills has entered its 27th year of service, and is located just north of Pampa city limits, along Highway 70. In 2014, Hidden Hills Golf Course was ranked as the fourth best economy course in the state of Texas by Dallas Morning-News for 2014-15. “That is quite an honor for Hidden Hills, the City of Pampa and the citizens of Pampa,” David Teichmann said. Former professional golfer David Teichmann is the club manager at Hidden Hills. “My main job is to make sure you have a good time when you come out here, but also run the operation, give the lessons, and make sure everyone gets around in an organized fashion.” Teichmann said “ I also maintain and operate the golf shop.” Hidden Hills has continuously seen improvements made to the course since its opening in 1990. “We didn’t have many cart trails, and now we have virtually all of them cemented,” he said. “We’ve had to rebuild some tees, and we’ve had to add sprinklers and all that, but it’s been an ongoing project.”
Teichmann said building the course cost roughly $800,000. He credited funds from the city, as well as donations, and volunteer works for the cost of construction. During 2014, Hidden Hills has made improvements to hole Nos. 3, 6, 8 and 14. “There is more to come in the next several years, Teichmann said. “We built a new fairway on No. 14 and hope to continue the work to enlarge all of our tee boxes and add new sprinklers where needed. The course has also had effluent water for 13 years. “That’s been a great benefit, having effluent water, because if we didn’t have that, we probably wouldn’t have much out here besides tees and greens,” Teichmann said. Hidden Hills has affordable rates. Green fees are $15 during the week, and $18 on weekends. Junior rates are $10 during the week and $12 dollars on weekends. Senior rates are $11 during the week. A one-person summer membership is $300, and lasts from May to September. For a couple or family, the summer rates are $350. For yearlong membership, rates are $525 for a single person, $600 for a couple, and $650 for a family. Hidden Hills is open daily from sunrise to sunset.

Top O’ Texas Trade Days n Event held every third Saturday of the month. Submitted
Something fun has started in Pampa, and we’re excited to get you involved! The Top O’ Texas Rodeo Association started up their sister project the Top O’ Texas Trade Days back in March. It’s beginning to grow into something Pampa can be very proud of! Oftentimes you hear residents say that they wish there was more to do in Pampa and that they didn’t have to leave town to find something fun to do. Well the Top O’ Texas Trade Days hope to make them your local monthly go-to event! The Trade Days run on the third Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They have vendors and artists who hand-craft items like signs and home decor, and vendors who make homemade foods such as cookies, pies, cakes, jams, jellies. We even have produce vendors, meat vendors, food trucks, specialty boutiques and companies like The Pampered Chef! They are located at the Norris Pavilion near the Rodeo grounds. Their Trade Days often coincide with Rodeo Events. Since this will be a kid-focused event, the Trade Day
vendors will all have a fun activity for kids to participate in. From rock painting, face painting and coloring tables, to cookie decorating, games, prizes and more! We think it’s going to be a lot of fun! We have a great group of people pulling together to create something fun for our town and make Pampa a town we can all be proud of. We urge you to come out to the next Trade Day on Saturday July 15th and help support growing this event – we’d love to see as many of you as possible! Looking to become a vendor? We are looking to fill a few more vendor spots for our monthly Trade Days. Additionally we are planning a Fall Festival and a Winter Festival and have some space available for holiday themed booths, seasonal food items, holiday photographers, musicians and more. If you or someone you know would like to become a vendor, please send us photos of what you sell along with your business name and contact information to topotexastradedays@gmail. com.

Welcome to Pampa and GrayCounty
Freedom Museum pays respects to all Military branches Staff Report Special exhibits coordinator Della Moyer aided with the updating of this article. Whether Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines, both former and current have a place they can visit here in Pampa to pay homage to their brothersin-arms and recall their service times. The Freedom Museum recognizes all branches of the military and has nostalgic items from all the wars. Opened in 1994, the Freedom Museum was founded by the Pampa Army Airfield reunion group and the Pampa Veterans of Foreign Wars. As well as remembering those who were stationed at the base, the purpose of the museum is “to collect, acquire, preserve and exhibit items of historical nature to America’s war efforts.” It is also to “educate each generation as to the efforts and sacrifices of war and to inscribe in their minds the cost of peace; to honor Americans in wars past; to preserve freedom by remembering the past; and to provide a tourist attraction for the City of Pampa, Texas.” The museum is open from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, but will open for special tours if needed. The museum has an average of 25 visitors a day. “We had 800 young folks in here in one day [when the Vietnam remembrance wall was visiting Pampa],” curator Andy Epps said. “It was a very educational experience for them as well as us, because their questions really allowed us to understand how much they did not have knowledge of. They asked some really interesting questions.” The building in which the museum is housed was built in 1939, as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Alphabet Soup” policies and projects that had acronyms for
names and came into order shortly after he was elected. It was built as a water pump station for the City of Pampa.
How it evolved
Over time as the Pampa Army Air Field Museum Inc. formed in 1987 and the local VFW joined in 1990, their efforts started to take off. They formed the Hall of Fame, now the Hall of Honor, and then opened the museum in 1994. At time of its opening, the museum had the UH-1H Huey Helicopter, which was active in Vietnam, and the M110 self-propelled 8” howitzer. Over time, it acquired a WWII submarine periscope, a McDonnell-Douglas B-25D, Norden Bomb sight, M2A1 Halftrack, a Sikorsky HH-3F helicopter (the Coast Guard helicopter), a US Army H-446 Crane, F4E Phantom II fighter, 1951 M38 Korean War Jeep,
WWII 1943 Ford Jeep, M60A1 Patton tank, an F-105 Thunderchief fighter bomber, B52 nuclear bomb case, 76mm T-124 Anti-Tank Gun and just in, a M998 HMMWV (Humvee). There is also an assortment of several other battle armaments and uniform collections. The Freedom Museum in Pampa, along with ones in Amarillo and in Liberal, Kansas, are among the handful of military museums in the Great Plains region. Epps did say that there are not many museums that try to cover all the branches of the military. “We try to cover them all,” Epps said. “Even though we started for just Pampa Army Airfield, in the old days that was the Army Air Corps., which later became our Air Force. As it moved forward joining forces with the VFW, it was decided to remember everyone, of all
branches of the service.” The museum functions solely on donations. The museum is required by the federal government to have one full-time employee or they will lose all their displays and exhibits. That employee is Ron Howell, a retired law enforcement officer who served in the US Army in Vietnam. Howell enjoys guiding visitors through the museum and relaying stories about various exhibits. When entering the museum, guests are greeted by either Epps, Howell or one of several volunteers who are always enthusiastic about their museum. If the tour starts on the right, tourists are taken into the Waters-Holt Room which contains the Hall of Honor and the two jeeps as well as a full-size diorama representing a jungle camp in Vietnam. The Hall of Honor has recently been upgraded and
37
A guide for visitors and newcomers can now be accessed digitally in house and online. This room is also used to display any special exhibits which may be ongoing. The current exhibit is “Vietnam-The Real Stories.” Various artifacts for all wars are contained in the display cases. Cutting across the front of the museum are models, uniforms and two ejection seats. Entering the West side of the museum, there is a model and pictures from the old Pampa Army Air Field, or the “Eagles’ Nest of the High Plains.” Circling the room are more uniforms, pictures and artifacts. Opposite the entrance is a gateway to a compound full of military history. There is the half-track, a military crane, a truck, the B53 nuclear bomb case, HMMWV and the B-25 bomber plane. Across the lot next to the CarmichaelWhatley Funeral Home are two additional aircraft, the F-4E which represents the aircraft which Pampan Jimmy Ayres was piloting at the time he was shot down during the Vietnam War and the F-105D which actually saw service in Vietnam. Freedom Museum USA is one of the premier military museums in the Texas Panhandle. Located at 600 N. Hobart in Pampa, Texas, it is within easy reach of anyone traveling through this area. Museum hours are Tuesday through Satur-
day from Noon until 4:00 p.m. Special tours can be arranged by calling (806) 669-6066. If you are just passing through or are new to the area and have not yet visited

CHURCHES OF CHRIST ARE A BODY OF BELIEVERS who are trying to the best of their
ability to restore a New Testament church in the 21st Century. Why would it be important for anyone to want to restore a New Testament church today? It really doesn’t matter too many people, but it does matter to those who belong to a Church of Christ. Churches of Christ are in a never ending mode of restoration. It has been said that if a COC is doing something that the New Testament church did not do, they will stop doing it. Likewise, if they are not doing something that a New Testament church did, they will start doing it. Stern warning is given to anyone who goes beyond the teaching of God’s word (2 John vs. 8-11). The fundamental belief of any member of a COC is that the Bible is in fact the inspired Word of God and the only absolute in the world. They believe that the Bible is the final authority for any religious discussion and it gives guidelines for living in any area of life. So members of a COC will
the Freedom Museum, please do so. If it has been a while since your last visit, please stop by and enjoy the new acquisitions and updated exhibits.
look to the New Testament for instruction how to worship and the plan for salvation. It could be said that members of a COC practice very “simple, no frills” Christianity. If one were to visit a COC on any Sunday (Lord’s Day), they would notice that every member participates in each act of worship, the most significant or most important of which is “Communion” or the “Lord’s Supper.” Every Sunday members of a COC will take a solemn moment to remember Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection by partaking of the emblems of “unleavened bread” representing the body of Christ and “fruit of the vine” which represents the blood of Christ (1 Cor. 11:23ff). It is a matter of faith that members of a COC take communion every Sunday (Acts 20:7). In a worship service in a COC one would notice that whole church family sings “a cappella” or (without instruments). It is important to members of a COC that each one offer a “sacrifice of praise of lips” (Hebrews 13:15). Also, it is important to members of a COC to note that the “heart” is the only instrument named in (Col. 3:16 and Eph. 5: 19-20) the texts that authorize singing in worship. One would also notice that in a COC worship service, the whole church will pray together, often being led by one of the men of the congregation (1 Tim 2:1ff.). In a COC worship members study together and are encouraged to follow in their Bibles the text the preacher is reading during the sermon. Bible study is vital for members of a COC (2 Timothy 2:15). During worship, members return a portion of the many blessings God has given each one. They all give together on the first day of the week or Sunday. (1 Cor. 16:1-3; 2 Cor. 9:7) Members of a COC teach the plan of salvation as revealed in God’s Word, that one is saved by grace through faith (Eph. 2:7-8). They believe that one must repent and be born again of the water and the spirit (baptism) as Jesus proclaimed in (John 3:3 ff.) They believe that Hearing the Gospel leads to a saving faith (Rom. 10:17). A saving faith prompts one to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, leading to obedience to Jesus’ command and be baptized unto salvation (Mark 16:15-16). It also leads to a desire to repent of ones sins (Luke 13:3) and ultimately to seek forgiveness of one’s sins by being baptized “into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, in the name of Christ” or “into Christ.” (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:38; Romans 6:3-ff; Gal. 3:26ff) The baptized believers are added to the church by God himself (Acts 2:47) and then the believer seeks to live a life worthy of the Gospel of Christ and be faithful unto death (Rev. 2:10). Churches of Christ have no earthly convention, conference or manmade creeds that determine what the Bible says or what a church of Christ should believe or teach on any issue. The only creed book a Church of Christ has is the New Testament. All Churches of Christ are autonomous and self-governing. Local Elders, who meet the qualifications for an Elder (1 Timothy 3:1-7) lead each congregation. In conclusion, if a person is looking for a Biblical church teaching strong Bible lessons and offering simple, no frills Biblical worship, a COC might be what you are looking for. At a COC every member participates in every act of worship and no one including the minister is better than anyone else. We are all equal in God’s eyes. Members of a COC know that they are not the audience in worship, God is. They do not attend to be entertained, they understand as worshippers, that they are the entertainers and God is the audience. God is searching each heart as his children take the Lord’s Supper, as they sing, as they give, as they study His Word together and as they pray together.

White Deer Land Museum: Pampa’s Window to the Past Staff Report The city of Pampa has a place to see the history of Gray County, and residents don’t have to go far to see it! Opened in 1970, the White Deer Land Museum is formerly the office of the White Deer Land Company, the land development company that was formed in 1886 with 631,000 acres. The museum houses one of the Southwest’s largest individual arrowhead and primitive tool collections. It also has more than 20 rooms depicting life in the Texas Panhandle around the turn of the century. The decision to make it into a museum was that of owner M.K. Brown, who passed away in 1964. People visit the museum every day, and last year’s total was about 3,000 visitors. “The White Deer Land offices were located in Pampa, and were selling land in Gray, Hutchinson, Carson and Roberts counties, right here by the railroad tracks,” said Kay Lard, museum director and curator. “That is why they wanted this address for the sales office. People would come off the train who wanted to live and settle here, and they would walk into this office and that is where they would purchase the land and finance it at the same time.” But eventually, the company’s sales trailed off. “Business kind of slowed down,” Lard said. “Some of the owners began leaving and going elsewhere, but one owner decided that they should make it a museum, which was the dream of M.K. Brown. “He recruited help including his sec-
retary, Clotille Thompson (also the first curator) and they made it happen after he passed.” Some of the exhibits include a country store, school room, chapel, barber shop, Western Union office, switchboard, military room, kitchen, parlor, sewing room and bedroom. While the museum
features something for everyone, the arrowhead collection tends to be a popular stop for the younger boys. “The younger boys really like the arrowhead collection which includes Clovis points. There are a few really neat fossils and all kinds of different things in the annex,” Lard said. “A lot of people like the land office. People go in there and think it’s a bank because of the counter, but it’s not a bank, it’s a land office. The military room is a major favorite, visitors really like that. That probably gets more attention than any of
them.” Lard said that one thing that makes the museum special is that it stays true to the purpose of showcasing Gray County. The Red River War annex not only features the large arrowhead display, it has expanded to feature the many artifacts collected by Pampa’s own Gerald Wight. Gerald located and gathered many pieces used at Gray County battles. We now have Gerald’s collection on full display and we are working on expanding that exhibit to include an Indian teepee, (Did you know teepees were furnished?), information collected about the usage of the buffalo, and other Indian living habits. Our annex also includes another Pampa collector, David Bailey. All these collections are a must see. Kay said that some of her favorite exhibits include the land office, the military room and Mr. Brown’s apartment. “I love Mr. Brown’s apartment,” Lard said. “I can just imagine him sitting up there in the mornings, eating his breakfast, looking out that window seeing the horse and buggies go by and seeing everyone bustling. I also like the land office as you can look over at the depot. You can imagine our Land Men meeting the trains, talking to the prospective land buyers and explaining their plans to make the Panhandle a great part of Texas. Little did our Land Men realize that they were selling what was discovered beneath that land. Oil and gas.

A guide for visitors and newcomers
Lard said that she often hears visitors talk about how unique the museum is. “They talk about how many artifacts we display that brings back precious memories of their family, their homes and their early life in Pampa.,” Lard said. In the last year we have changed and added to several of our exhibits and hope to refresh the whole museum but it takes time.
The museum is open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Visitors can call 806-6698041 for special tours. Admission is free but the museum welcomes donations. For more information, visit www.pampamuseum.org. We will be having a summer camp for kids ages 6 to 12, June 20 thru 23.

Woody Guthrie Folk Music Center n This land is your land. By Della Moyer
In 1929, 18-year-old aspiring singer/songwriter Woody Guthrie arrived in Pampa from Oklahoma at the behest of his father, an Oklahoma businessman down on his luck and working in Pampa to pay off debts. Guthrie arrived quite accomplished playing the harmonica and quickly acquired an amazing talent with the fiddle and guitar while in Pampa. He became a determined musician with little interest in the conventions of rural Panhandle life, spending more time busking on Pampa streets and reading in the local library than attending school, dropping out of Pampa High before completing his final year. In 1933, At 19, he married Mary Jennings and worked at jobs in Pampa while honing his musical skills. Guthrie and his wife, Mary, had three children in Pampa: Gwen, Sue and Bill. In 1937, Guthrie left Pampa behind, joining the throngs of Midwesterners driven from farmlands across America by the advent of the Dust Bowl and working their way west to California in the hopes of a better life. Guthrie, considered an icon of American folk music, authored the nation’s folk anthem “This Land is Your Land,” among other distinctly American classics. Guthrie may have left Pampa, but Pampa never quite left Guthrie. Pampa locals Thelma Bray and Glenna Lea Miller established the Woody Guthrie Folk Music Center in 1991. Housed in Pampa’s historic Harris Drug Store, one-time Guthrie employer, the Center serves as musical venue for live events throughout the year and a museum of relics that chronicle Woody’s life and music. The Woody Guthrie Folk Music Center strives to keep Woody’s words and music alive and to provide a place for the public to visit a little part of Woody’s world. Anyone may come there to learn about, talk about, sing about and add to the legacy of Woody Guthrie. The Center has a variety of books, recordings, drawings and pictures from Woody’s life. For those who might desire to play and sing, the Center is open on Friday nights for jams, stories and fellowship. These evenings are open to the public and anyone is welcome to pull up a chair to listen or to visit. The Woody Guthrie Folk Music Center is located at 320 South Cuyler, Pampa, Texas. For more information visit www.woodyguthriepampatx.com or call Michael Sinks at (806) 664-0824.
