71st Annual Top O’ Texas Rodeo: A tradition of two nights of fun-filled action Last year the Top O’ Texas Rodeo Association changed the annual rodeo from a three-night event to a two-night event in what has been lauded as a great move. The tradition will continue this year as the 71st Annual Top O’ Texas Rodeo will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 4 and Saturday, Aug. 5. “That (moving to two nights) was very successful,” director Cindy Kemph said. “Our attendance remained the same over two nights compared to three.” The Second Annual Muttin’ Bustin Extravaganza will take place on the first night as well as a free barbecue dinner for ticket holders. For the purpose of brevity there won’t be any side-
shows aside from the regular events for the children. “We’ll have our calf scramble and nickel drop every night,” Kemph said. “The regular kids events.” There will be a new voice of the rodeo as Ricky Bindseil, from Marble Falls, will take the mic with his own flavor of wit and entertainment. This year Gray County sheriff Michael Ryan will be the grand marshal for the parade which takes place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5. Following each night of rodeo there will be a dance at the Top O’ Texas/Norris Pavillion. Friday’s dance will feature music from Chancy Bernson while Saturday’s dance will have music from The Buster Bledsoe Band. Tickets for each dance are $10 per person or $15 per couple. “It’s another way to provide entertainment for the people who come out to the rodeo,” Kemph said.

“It’s a good time.” Rodeo tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. The rodeo is important to the area not just because what it does for the economy, but also because it’s a piece of Pampa tradition. “We’ve got to keep it alive because that’s part of our tradition and heritage here,” Kemph said. “There’s a lot of people who use the rodeo here to get together with family and friends. I know a lot of people who have box seats and it might be the only time their families get together outside of holidays. We have people who have box seats in the same family for 60-plus years. Those people meet all of their friends because they’ve also had the same seats for so long.” For more information on the Top O’ Texas Rodeo, call 806-669-0434.

Current Miss Top O’ Texas prepares to pass on the Crown By Steven Watson
swatson@thepampanews.com
Another year has come and for current Miss Top O’ Texas, Shelby Watson, that means passing the crown off to a new cowgirl. Shelby is the 14-year-old daughter of Jessica Watson and Chris Bridwell. She will be starting her Sophomore year at Pampa High School in the fall. Shelby has lived in Pampa her whole life and has been rodeoing and competing since the age of three. She has three main mounts, Odie, Sofia, and Flits and her hobbies include hunting and fishing. For Shelby, while she loves to rodeo, she also loves to influence her younger fans. ”I love the little kids running up asking for pictures and autographs,” said Shelby. “It makes me feel like I have done a good job, like I am a good rolemodel.” Shelby competes in National Little Britches Rodeos where she competes in barrels, poles, trail, goat tying, ribbon roping, breakaway roping, and team roping. She has earned many titles including: 2008 HCSP Reserve Champion, 2009 HCSP Year End Champion and High Point Champion, RCSP Year End Champion, 20102015 TOTRC Year End Champion, 2012 WDRC Year End Champion, as well as winning the PBRA Year End Finals saddle and 2013 PBRA Year End Finalist Championship. She has qualified for BBR World multiple times. In 2015, she was the JRCA Reserve Champion Barrel Racer and won second in the average for the year. Shel-
by also won the 2D Champion saddle with Post Time Productions. She finished up at National Little Britches finals with a go round win and an average win and finished out sixth in the world
in 2016. So far this year, Shelby has maxed out in almost all of her events qualifying her for the SHELBY cont. on page 5

She is considering pre-med and eventually becoming a neurosurgeon. She says the most important thing in life is God and her family. Shelby believes in hard work and determination, setting and reaching goals, helping others, and having faith in our Lord and Savior. Shelby’s motto is,” You can’t cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.” While holding title can often be a burden for some, for Shelby that’s not the case. “I would say the most challenging part for me is the night before I have to make an appearance I have to put roller in my hair,” Shelby said. “ I guess that’s an easy challenge compared to some.” Shelby has really enjoyed being Miss Rodeo

Daylee Bowman throws name Ashley Ferguson looks to take the in hat for Rodeo Queen reins of Miss Rodeo Top o’ Texas By Steven Watson
swatson@thepampanews.com
Local Freshman and long-time rodeo competitor Daylee Bowman is seeking to be the next Top O’ Texas Rodeo Queen. The daughter of Tobee and Jennifer Bowman, Daylee is no stranger the Texas Panhandle and the life of a cowgirl. “I have been riding since before I could walk.” Bowman said. “Competitively, I been riding in AQHA shows for seven years. I show in Ranch Pleasure and in rodeo I team rope with dad and I do barrels and poles.” Some of her achievements include PGSQHA High Point Champion 20122013, COTAHC Open High Point Youth 2013-2014, Rank Little Buckers Sr. Barrel Champion, and two-time qualifier for the AQHA World Show in Ranch Pleasure. Her hobbies and interests are horse shows, rodeo, reading and her horse. When she isn’t competing she enjoys hanging out with her family and anything that involves livestock. Bowman’s favorite thing about Pampa is that it is a close knit community where everyone knows everyone and no one is afraid to lend a helping hand to someone in need. Her horse’s name is Max. According to Bowman he is extremely ornery and loves anything sweet, especially cake and he even loves to play dress up.
As a seven-year competitor and lifelong cowgirl Bowman now seeks to be Rodeo Queen. “ I feel like with as many different places as I travel, I feel I could be a good representation for our small town rodeo by promoting it all the places I go,” Bowman said. “I’m very passionate about rodeo and I think I can inspire others to be as well.” Bowman wants to be queen because she feels it would be a fun opportunity to meet new people, learn new things, teach things, and decorate Max for parades. It would also show that all of her and Max’s hard work had paid off and that she had accomplished a childhood dream. Despite her young age, Bowman is DAYLEE cont. on page 7

Ashley Ferguson is in her last year of eligibility to run for Miss Rodeo Top o’ Texas and said having grown up on ranch her entire life, she would like to inspire all generations as Rodeo Queen. Ferguson wants to be crowned queen because she wants to represent the Top O’ Texas area with values, loyalty and the heart of a true cowgirl. She wants to leave a legacy for the younger generation to know that absolutely anything is possible. “I want to do it because I want to be an inspiration to not only the younger generation but the older, as well,” Ferguson said. “Not only in just the rodeo but who I am as well.” The daughter of Ronnie and Julie, Ferguson wants to help grow the sport of rodeo and the Top O’ Texas Rodeo Association. As far as advice from current queen Shelby Watson? Ferguson said she is looking forward to everything that comes with Rodeo Queen. “I just heard it’s a lot of fun and a it has a lot of opportunities,” Ferguson said. A rodeo competitor herself, Ferguson rides in barrel races and enjoys watching team roping, saddle bronc and barrel racing. Like a mother with her children, Ferguson can’t make a choice on who her favorite horse is. She has Titus, who she has raised. Blaze, who is her barrel racing horse and Haas who is her ranch horse. Ferguson said one of the challenges in raising a horse is learning their temperament. “It’s a fun challenge to me, we’ve always
raised horses,” Ferguson said. “I love working with different ones and learning their personalities. One can be easy to train and the next one has an attitude or is hard-headed. It’s a challenge with each one but it’s fun.” Ferguson, who was home-schooled for nine years, graduated a year early in 2016. Ferguson grew up a preacher’s daughter on the Matthews/Johnson Ranch and lived there for 10 years. The most important thing in Ashley’s life is God. “Without Him, I wouldn’t be here,” Ferguson said. “I wouldn’t be where I am in life today, and I wouldn’t have the blessings I do. Above all, I wouldn’t be able to do what I know and love without God.” She lives by the motto, “Put God first and you’ll never be last. Never give up and leave a legacy so big people will wonder how you did it!” ASHLEY cont. on page 7

Meet rodeo announcer Ricky Bindseil Ricky Bindseil was born and raised in the small town of Spicewood, Texas which is located in the Central Texas area of the Hill County about 35 miles west of Austin. Ricky grew up farming and ranching and had a huge passion for agriculture and livestock. Ricky began at an early age to love the sport of rodeo as he began riding steers in local youth rodeos. He then seemed to have an even bigger love for rodeo and started calf roping where he competed through his early years of junior high all the way through high school into his early adulthood. Ricky attended Marble Falls High School and was a graduate of the class of 1995. During high school Ricky was also an active member in both 4-H and FFA raising and showing beef cattle, swine and poultry. After graduation Ricky started working on the Palface Ranch which was the founder of the Red Brangus cattle breed. In 2008 Ricky started a different career in the public safety sector and began employment with the Burnet County Sheriff’s Office as a correctional officer. In 1999 Ricky successfully completed Police academy and began his career as a Police Officer. Ricky has continued in the public safety sector where he currently is the Patrol Captain with the Burnet County Sheriff’s Office. In February of 2012 Ricky began a second career
when he attended the Chad Nicholson Rodeo Announcers School held during the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo and became a Rodeo Announcer. Ricky has excelled in the rodeo industry as he has been the Announcer for the Professional Armed Forces Rodeo Association World Finals from 2014 – 2017. He is also an active member with the Cowboys
Professional Rodeo Association as well as the United Professional Rodeo Association as he announces numerous rodeos throughout the rodeo season each year. In 2016 Ricky accomplished a lifelong goal in his rodeo career as he was accepted into the elite group of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) as a PRCA Rodeo Announcer. Ricky is married to his wife Missy Bindseil and has two children, son Cade Bindseil 16 years old and daughter Emma Bindseil 12 years old. His wife Missy had a huge part into his announcing career as she attended college at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, TX, on a music scholarship. While attending Tarleton State she became friends with Chad Nicholson (PRCA Announcer) and the connection between Ricky and Chad began in the rodeo announcing world. Missy is not only Ricky’s right hand lady in everyday life, but she is his music director in the rodeo industry. In 2017 Missy received her membership into the PRCA as a music director. Ricky is a member of the Daybreak Rotary Club of Marble Falls and volunteers with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), the Hill Country Children’s Advocacy Center and numerous other non-profit organizations in the area.
