IS PUP READY FOR THE 2015 ASEAN INTEGRATION?

It is your first major quiz in the semester. You are late. You quickly took your bath and wore your uniform. You did not mind the breakfast in the table and said good bye to your mother. And now, you are waiting outside the house for a cab. As you rode inside, a chill rushed down to your neck. It’s because you remembered that you have your first major exam today. And this time, you are totally worried. As if Zeus has sent his thunderbolt to you, you skimmed the pages of the book and reviewed the lessons quickly. You regret the fact that you played Clash of Clans last night, and should have studied the lesson about History of Money instead. At last, you are now entering the room. Your teacher disappointedly handed you over the questionnaire. Your Singaporean classmate passed his paper, then the Thai and Malaysian buddies. You sat between your Vietnamese and Indonesian classmates and started answering the test. Just a few ticks and the time is up, but you’re still stuck on the paper, not knowing what to answer. And then the bell rings. Suddenly, you remember that you are a Filipino. The scenario above is likely to be our position in the 2015 ASEAN Integration. The 2015 ASEAN Integration is a result of the ASEAN 2020 Vision to build an ASEAN Community. ASEAN 2020 agreed on “a shared vision of ASEAN as a concert of Southeast Asian nations, outward looking, living in peace, stability and prosperity, bonded together in partnership in dynamic development and in a community of caring

societies.” The leaders of the member countries decided to accelerate the regional integration to 2015, to highlight ASEAN’s centrality and to make sure that ASEAN remains the driving force in maintaining the evolving regional environment. The 2015 ASEAN Integration is planned to have good objectives, however, are we prepared for it? For educators and students, education is our main concern here. What is our stand in the upcoming change in our system? We have to first solve the challenges on our way to cope up. If not, when the integration takes place, we would be eaten alive by our neighbors. We would be like the Filipino student in the story beaten by his foreign classmates because he was not fully prepared for the examination. Though this is already our battle cry, investment in education would be a great start. There is a continuous effort in the government and some private institutions to strengthen the educational ground, like the incorporation of the K to 12 curriculum in our schools and the shifting of academic calendars of some universities and colleges in the country, but it is not enough. Looking at the world rankings of our universities and colleges, only some are included like the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila, De La Salle University, and University of Santo Tomas. And yet, our bests are not the best in the world stage. They lie far below in the list. To take

note, the last three are private universities. The tuition fees in these universities cannot be afforded by the common Juan de la Cruz. If the government would just add funds to our State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), maybe then we can see improvements. Lack of funds would mean lack of resources in educating our young people. Professionals would not mind going abroad to seek greener pastures instead of imparting their knowledge here in the country. Facilities in SUCs, not all, but mostly are old and not in accordance with the state-of-the -art level, unlike with private ones which can buy the latest model for the needs of their students and this should be improved. If not, we would not be able to train and hone well, making them less competitive in the global scene. What more to those who need an intensive effort in education? Top universities in Southeast Asia are public schools, unlike in the Philippines. In short, some of the private universities and colleges in the country offer a more diverse education than SUCs.

equipment needed in their investigatory projects. Collaboration of SUCs and private higher education institutions should be strengthened. Interests of both parties can be addressed. Competition is present among universities and colleges, all aiming to be the best in the country. This creates a barrier among us. What if we could work together and aim to be the bests of the country? Partnerships should be promoted by both sides. This idea is no longer new, but we have to put more of our attention here. Our differences can be covered up by helping each other. Though we are archipelagic geographically, we can be united in our educational sector by this partnership between publics and privates. The top university in Southeast Asia now is the National University of Singapore with very competitive educational courses and curricula. However, the Philippines can be on top too, if we will act together and it is not the government’s sole obligation, but also ours, the school body portrays an important role in preparing for the 2015 ASEAN Integration. Our country once led our region, we can do it again.

Maybe the problem is not really about the availability, but accessibility to the funds because Commission on Higher Education (CHED) regional director Catherine Castañeda said that the money is alWe have to face these challenges ways available. Then, what takes it so long in order to rise up. We have to put our atfor them to allocate it to SUCs hungry for tention to the definition of our programs. it? If we do not want to end up like in the story, we should act now. We should discover ways on how we would adapt in the new system. We would know the things that we need to improve and potentials that we need to develop. At the end of the day, whether we like it or not, this integration will happen. The best way to welcome it is to prepare for it. (Mark Jeremy P.

To fulfill the advocacy of improving the financial literacy of banking and finance students, Junior Financial Executives – PUP San Juan Chapter in partnership with Prof. Patricia M. Bustamante and all fourth year banking and finance students, conducted “Investing in the Stock Market today” seminar on September 13, 2014. Speakers were Mr. Carlos Leandro F. The said event aimed to acquaint all the banking and finance students about the nature of stocks, why and why they need not to invest in stocks, how to pick winning stocks, methods of investing and how to get started. Speakers shared that there is another way to earn money by not actively working for it. It’s what they refer as ‘passive income’. Your money works for you. Through the issuance of shares or shares subscription, the corporation can raise their capital. They introduced stock market and recommended investing on it. The speakers shared four tasks on picking the right stocks to buy. First is to know the prices. Second is to know some fundamentals or do fundamental analysis. Fundamental analysis is a

I find it difficult to shop for clothes. I would either cringe at the sight of what I wear, or start to shed a tear at the sight of the price tag, making what it seemed a short shopping trip take a whole day. If you’re in the same place as I’m in, you must be sick of your ways of shopping, too. I finally decided to sit down and actually think about how to make my next spree somewhat better and cost-effective. Here’s what I learned: Never shop in just one place – Don’t just stay in one place thinking they have all you need. Just like food, there are loads of different shops that carry the right stuff fit for your style and size. You can get more variety in your clothes and know where else to shop the next time.

technique that attempts to determine a security’s value by focusing on underlying factors which affect a company’s actual business and future prospects. Next to it is to do a Top-Down review. It is the way of determining the company’s economic position and its current state in business cycle. Lastly, is to know the company’s prospects by looking for other companies with ability to grow earnings - good or cheap valuations and fine background. Buying stocks has two methods Peso Cost Averaging and Market Timing. In the Peso Cost Averaging, you will invest a fixed amount of money at regular intervals over a long period. It is better to track down your invested money. Here in stock market, they will not enforce you to invest always; it is upon your discretion if you still want to increase your investment or not. In market timing, you will do trend analysis. We aim to watch and follow market direction and the strategy for buying and selling stock. Furthermore, the speakers also conferred about the risks that may arise in investing in the stock market and how to mitigate them all. Investing in stocks is a lucrative way of yielding money in a passive manner. The younger we start to invest, the higher the profit that we may gain. (Christopher Arlo Malacad)

She grew up from a rich family but chose to live independently at the age of eighteen. There, she experienced a lot of situations that made her think her life was a failure. She found God’s love and protection amidst living a life with many suicidal attempts, people who made her life unbearable, but thrived in different impossible situations. She looked for jobs and had her fate with a cookware company, being a top seller peddling hundred and twenty sets and earning a million in just a month. Well, that’s a record! Ms. Charry has also developed a framework with China, Macau and Hong Kong; a framework where she discovered that we are all being clipped off by a lot of business people who are taking advantage of the misinformation being scattered about Chinese goods. YOU’RE LATE!

Do banking and finance students need to practice cheer dance to ensure financial analysis and forecasting, Rizal’s life and works for accountancy students to balance financial statements, or even memorizing the lines for Sabayang Pagbigkas in preparing the main course for hospitality management students? Summing it up – what is really the point of doing this? Do minor subjects really matter for college students? The CHED Memorandum Order No. 20, Series of 2013, also known as the new General Education Curriculum, gives a paradigm shift on the way the Higher Education Institutions should handle the General Education. It says on its first article that this “General Education is the portion of the curriculum common to all undergraduate students regardless of their major”. Now, subjects like English and Filipino for Banking and Finance students aren’t categorized anymore as Minor Subjects, but rather as General Education. Also, only students majoring in Economics will take its Basic Economics, and Politics will require Introduction to Politics and Governance. In short, these introductory subjects will no longer be taught to all students, only to those who are majoring in a particular discipline. Primarily, this curriculum’s purpose is for every student to appreciate knowledge, be open-minded, secure their identities as an individual and as Filipino, and be aware of their role for the country and the world in a larger scope. As for the student’s perspective, it would be with the way students look at it. Take this one: Dos Policy for the Accounting students can be the perfect example of the distinction between the two. While this is a good way to motivate us to focus on our majors, students like us would start to aim for the bare minimum for our majors while simply saying "Kahit tres lang, okay na!" with our minors. We become more studious with our major subjects that we start not to care about our minors, simply because some aren't related to the course we're studying. We can say that we understand, because first of all, why are we studying a subject that is only remotely related, or even not related at all, to our course? We believe that even if the subject is something we would not be majoring in, it's something new to learn nonetheless and should be taken as seriously as a major. Saying this, the distinction between major and minor subjects isn't the problem, but the standards we have towards our grades. That's the reason why we're all so focused on the difference between majors and minors, isn't it? We’re not saying that we should have the Dos policy with all our subjects and to all courses, but to become more motivated with our studies, to elevate our standards when it comes to grades and to release the mediocrity in our college lives. While major subjects should be more focused on for obvious reasons (It’s what we'll be doing after we graduate, after all) there should be no distinction between the two. Let me end with a quote by Wayne Dyer: “If you change the way you look

at things the things you look at change.”

Maria Angela Almario: Have you watched the movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs? It's about a guy who invented a machine which has the ability to make it rain food. I know it sounds silly but if i were to invent something that would help on the improvement of the community it would have to be that. Poverty, i think, is a very crucial issue in each community which needs to be addressed, and one way to minimize it is by producing food for those who are unable to provide for themselves, and this machine would do exactly that.

Janessa Villapando: For me, it isn't about creating an invention to improve our communication, but a project that would promote the less usage of cellphones and gadgets. While the internet and our cellphones have taken on new levels of communication and have given us the chance to interact with millions of people around the world, it has also hindered us from properly talking to those in front of us, from focusing on studies, from giving time to appreciate the little things in life without the urge of taking a photo to show to your followers. I am not against gadgets and the internet, as they have both been VERY good to me, business and college wise (not SIS though hihi). But we have to know when to put our phones down and our faces up, and a project to do just that would hopefully increase our communication skills, and even give us the chance to know the people around our campus.

Jeremy Esquejo: I have observed that some parts of San Juan City dispose their garbage improperly, especially the plastic wrappers and such. Instead of improperly littering these wastes, why don't we create a program where these would be collected and recycled into useful materials? As I have watched in the news, there is a machine in China or Taiwan that converts plastics into threads and other materials. This thread is used to make clothes and textile products, which in fact, are better and more durable. See? If we can make a similar project for this one, for sure, problems in improper disposal of plastic wrappers here in our city would be addressed. This has a domino effect also. Not only do we answer the problem on plastic concerns, but we could also provide livelihood programs for our local people, thus, helping to uplift their social status and the economy of city and country.

Nowadays, we can hear a lot of people, especially those who are in the business and finance fields talk about stocks and such. In addition to this, some would say, “Oh, you should now be involved in stocks. It’s good to start young.” While this is good advice, many young people merely blink their eyes, for they do not know anything about it, missing their chances of earning money for themselves.

Teaching a Unique Profession “EDUCATION?! Why this course? You will not earn a good living from teaching! Checking of papers, lesson planning, and doing visual aids during your rest days and vacation…” These are some of the things my dear mother mentioned when I took Education as my bachelor’s degree. Up until today, I’m still not sure as to why I chose to become a teacher. The only thing I’m sure about was that ever since I was a child, I knew that teaching would become my life. And when I started college, I explored the world of teaching, discovering and experiencing many things that gave me more reasons why teaching is my life and true calling. Teaching is unique because… You need to be a manager, counselor, motivator, leader, model, surrogate-parent, facilitator, instructor, data-analyzer; Public Relation Specialist, statistician and researcher. Not only do we have to be all these at the same

time, but these roles are utilized every single day. Teachers are responsible for different areas such as assessment, attendance, graduation rates, dropouts, discipline and even the educational progress of the students to ensure that each individual reaches their ultimate goal in life. We are also expected to become behavioral specialists and learn to apply different styles of teaching, to look for different effective strategies that will meet the needs of the learners. Lastly, we are accountable for producing the next generation of our society. We are in charge of the kinds of leaders, employees, and lawmakers and basically, our future generation. This responsibility lies in the hands of a teacher. And because of all these, I realized how important and unique the career I chose is. (Maj. Stone Heart)

A sight of stock market financial ticker tapes is confusing to a beginner because of its number, graphs, lines, words and more. That is why institutions, companies, and organizations hold seminars and conferences to individuals who are new in this field but willing and interested to learn about stocks. However, there is another way to immerse oneself in the world of stocks with just clicks away. And it’s free. By simply installing TradeHero in your mobile phone, you can now learn and experience what it is like to trade stocks. Singapore based My Manisku Pte Ltd launched TradeHero months before 2013 ended. It is an application designed to give users a free simulation about stock trading. This is also a social investment network that allows users to connect with their social media accounts and online friends.

Another good feature of the app is that as you become a top trader or someone who makes big profit for the shares you trade and when someone follows you, you would be able to earn half of TradeHero’s $1.99 collection. This amount would be forwarded to your Paypal account. The better trader you are and the more followers you get, it pays off to actual earnings. Now who wouldn’t want to learn about stocks this easily? With TradeHero, we can now be knowledgeable about stocks even with the introduction. We can experience near real-time information from stock markets by just enjoying and clicking our mobile phones. At the same time, we can have earnings. Instead of doing not-so-important activities in the Internet, why not invest with this one? (Mark Jeremy P. Esquejo)

Stop thinking small; Think Big

Most people think of innovation as creating something new; being different or novel among the rest, but is that really how we ought to perceive it? More importantly, with the growing trend of contemporary technologies in our society, how does one try to create – or at least implement – the process of innovation? There have been a great number of instructions and demands from the internet about the matter, but let me distill them into simple but much compelling tips, with helpful examples, along with the aid of PUP San Juan Prof. Richard Dacalos’ opinion – because I‘ll be quoting some of his answers during our interview with him regarding this topic. Look at the problems you have It could be as communal as the heavy traffic in EDSA or as personal as your everyday household problems, what’s important is that you have in mind a specific problem that’s waiting to be solved. ‘Problems are Opportunities’ – says Prof. Dacalos. He also said that innovation is creating a need that may or may not exist. It’s like Nero looking at who survived and to them he granted his mercy and bags of gold. It’s also like the arena where Christians were fed to the lions, as dessert. I ask you to mull on those. We just know them “by brain” and it’s only now that we realize by heart and can picture in our minds Christians being fed to lions and had their arms torn by the beasts and their face scratched upon and eaten up whole. But what’s up here in this 21st century? Christians in all ways are respected and they respect back in return. And the Gladiators are men and women who fight to withstand forever, in order to LEARN.

Doon niya natutunan maging matatag, masipag at matipid.

Jenny G. Patris ang kanyang buong pangalan. Pamilyar na ba? Bunsong anak nina G. Luis P. Patris at Gng. Cleofe G. Patris. Nagtapos siya sa kursong Bachelor in Secondary Education Major in Math. Bata pa lamang ay kinakitaan na rin siya ng angking talino. Sobrang nagpapasalamat siya sa Panginoon, sa kanyang pamilya, sa magasawang Robledo (kanyang mga amo), kina Prop. Ian Saguindan at Prop.

open it? Would you accept Him as your Savior and Lord? What if He asked you to repent and change your lifestyle, would you do that? Would you surrender to Him? God loves us so much that He gave Jesus Christ, His one and only son, to save us from our sins. Whoever believes and confesses that He is Lord would be saved. Christ who has not sinned suffered for us. He was crucified and penalized so that we would be cleansed and justified in the eyes of God. He took the shame, guilt, and pain that we should have experienced in order to save us back. Jesus has long added us to His eternal love and what we just have to do is to accept it. Do you feel that right now Jesus is humbly knocking in your heart and asking you to let Him in? Brothers and sisters let Him in for it would cost you nothing but salvation, joy, and faith.

Today’s generation, technology has been encompassing every aspect of our lives; from the time we wake up to the period of going to bed. One of the manifestations of this is the internet. With this, one thing that makes it so appealing is its capability to let us communicate fast and virtually. Facebook is a social medium application where we can send our messages instantly, upload files and images, update our statuses, and look for our old and new friends, may they be personal or virtual. Most of us usually do “confirm” or “add as friend” those we do not really know, maybe because we based it on their profile picture, mutual friends, or we have met them in some events and places. The Valiant Filipino Basketball Athletes Most Filipinos are really fascinated in playing basketball. Fortunately it is one of the desired sports that has been initiated to everyone courtesy of James Smith of United States of America. We may be able to see people playing this sport everywhere as long as there is a ring to take a shot on. It seems that people who engage in this game are all having fun and allow themselves to alleviate anxiety and to maintain a good healthy body.

This sport is indeed for everyone. Just one ring is enough to start playing. The Filipino icon basketball players like James Yap and Jimmy Alapag, and on the other hand, Kobe Bryant and Lebron James of NBA Basketball really persuade Filipinos to keep in touch with this great sports.
