EDITOR’S NOTE As the old saying goes “There’s nothing permanent in this world, rather than change.” Though sometimes it brings up misconceptions and negative impressions, change itself is inevitable. But having progress is different; it is intentional. As Tony Robbins put it: “Change is inevitable, progress is optional.” It takes some amount of force to implement it. It wouldn’t just come with a snap. It takes blueprints of plans, creative minds, breakfast to midnight meetings, and one team driven with vision to execute it all – and for us, it’s the Editorial Board. We worked hard to come up of a redesigned look of Paraseist. Starting with articles up to the blueprint, we’ve then conducted interviews and pictorials, making it eye-catching and readable for students is the integral yet the hardest part. This special issue covers the events and activities organized from January to July 2015, as well as the competitions our students have participated in and outside the campus. We’ve featured stories of inspiration and recipes of success from our graduates, janitors who took PUPCET, and the Mr. & Ms. PUP San Juan 2015. We’ve also added new sections like: Accounting & Finance, Business & Lifestyle, Education & Technology, Alumni Stories, Music & Entertainment, and Masterpieces. I’d like to take this opportunity to give credit to all of our editors, artists, writers, photographers and advisers who worked tirelessly for the last five months: this is a product of our passion, commitment and diligence. And to all our readers, for your continued support and trust to the official student publication of our campus, thank you very much! Hope you enjoy reading every single page from this issue!

araseist, the official student publication of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines - San Juan Campus, has organized a half-day seminar entitled “Citizen Journalism: A Responsibility of Every Juan” on February 17, 2015 at the Conference Room of the university. It was one of the highlighted activities of the recently celebrated PUP San Juan’s 7th Founding Anniversary. Ms. Rowena Paraan, Head of ABS CBN’s Bayan Mo iPatrol Mo, presented the Citizen Journalism: how social media has continuously played its role in spreading the news, how it gives local news a national attention, and how ordinary people could be part of the change. Mr. Caisam Yvez Nopueto, Editor-in-Chief of The New Builder, the official student publication of Mapua Institute of Technology, spoke on how to innovate the campus journalism from the writing styles up to the graphic lay-outing. He also shared five steps such as - understanding basics, know thyself, analyze, implement, and feedback. Each discussion was followed by an open forum where participants were given the privilege to raise their questions to the speaker. The activity concluded with a closing remark from Ms. Ana Sha-Riel Dela Cruz, Associate Editor; followed by the singing of PUP Hymn. (Myron Danielle L. Montefalcon)

Ms. Grace Pangan and Ms. Leny Dacillo during the National Finance Summit 2015

wo Banking and Finance junior students – Leny Dacillo and Grace Pangan represented the Junior Financial Executives – PUP San Juan in the National Finance Summit 2015. The theme of the summit, “Ground Zero for Global Competitiveness” was held on January 24, 2015 at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City. This was spearheaded by the Junior Confederation Finance Association of the Philippines (JCFAP). It intended to refresh and revitalize finance students to not only to provide them with competencies of the worker in the finance industry, but also competencies that would fit in the most practical and internationally

minded finance persons. “The event was helpful and full of learning. All the speakers were brilliant in delivering their topics. Edmund Lee and Brian Hachez advise participants to first invest in knowledge before investing in stocks, to do more than what is expected, and to always be ready whenever an opportunity arises. These are just few of several things that participants learned from them which really put a mark in our hearts. That is why we gave them an excellent rating after the summit,” said Dacillo and Pangan. (Myron Danielle L. Montefalcon)

unior Financial Executives – PUP San Juan Chapter (JFINEX) launched its first ever team building activity and victory party on March 25, 2015. It aimed to foster camaraderie and goodwill among organization officers, classroom officers and its members; to inculcate the spirit of unity; to enhance further good management within the organization and to hone the leadership skills of all officers and members involved in this activity. The team building entitled “Building Connection for a Strong and Unified Organization” was started with a leadership seminar spearheaded by Paul Roman A. Perez (JFINEX – President) and Myron Danielle L. Montefalcon (Paraseist – Editor-in-Chief) as the

speakers. For the afternoon meal, we held a boodle fight which was participated by all students who were present at the event. Each team had their own corresponding names and colors: there were seven teams in total. The games started in the afternoon right after the boodle fight. It started with a yell competition. Seven other stations which composed of various games. At the end of the day, team Risk won the event and garnered the most disciplined and most effective team work award. Next to them was the team Money who did not place any rank but achieved the most unit-

ed award. Team Stocks got the second place while team Bonds achieved the third place. For the evening event, the victory party entitled “VICTORY: A Fruit of Unity” was celebrated in commemoration of the achievement sustained by the organization from the concluded 7th founding anniversary last February 2015. The said events provided a great opportunity to bond and to build a strong connection within the people of the organization since it served as a conduit and a process to strengthen synergy among the leaders and subordinates toward victory. A

s our gastronomic journey continue as the Paraseist staffers go out to look for new restaurants that don’t only satisfy our taste buds, but can also fit an Isko’s budget and give them a place to hang out in. Everyone knows that Wilson and P. Guevarra Street is nestled with some of the best and affordable restaurants. But this time, the busy street of A. Mabini is our stop, introducing the newly opened Asian Fusion restaurant: 7 Flavors! Wondering what 7 Flavors is? It’s a resto that serves food and drinks that are literally composed of seven flavors such as sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter, umami and astringent. Who would have imagined an astringent which is used as ingredient for toners is included in your food? Not only does it offer such kind of food, but it also has three things to offer – the artisan bakery, gourmet café, and Asian fusion buffet! Gastronaut Corporation is the group behind the 7 Flavors. They’re a group of food enthusiasts who had an idea wherein they want to capture the market for the takeout crowd through the bakery, casual diners through the café, and diehard foodies for the buffet. “It’s a three-in-one concept that so far looks like it is working” said Karlo Aquino, one of its partners. They make sure of its prime spot, marketing-wise: they got a place in a busy street. Imagining so many people coming from Makati taking a shorter route to the North, and they see the inviting picture, the attractive window and green wall up there, and they see people dining. People trapped in traffic might then say “Kain muna tayo dito” or “Balik tayo dito next time.” As for us students, what makes it great is that it is just blocks away from our campus! As you enter the vicinity, you’ll be welcomed by a green wall and a window on the left corner. Cool, isn’t it? It’s their objective to have a cool and refreshing theme that promotes eco-friendliness. Upon entering, you’ll see their wall of fame, featuring no other than Chef Boy Logro, who crafted almost everything offered by this restaurant. He doesn’t cook there every day but he imparts the recipes to their chefs. Each of the three set-ups has different looks and personalities; the same way the food they serve. The man who created the whole place is the one who also designed Wafu in Greenhills.

f wearing a ourmet café tering buffet

Let’s start with artisan bakery where they offer premium goods. As we arrived, baked goods were almost sold out. Their best-selling pastry is their Signature Ensaymada with seven distinctive flavors such are butter, pandan, cheese, ube, coconut, leche flan, and bacon, which cost a mere P40 each! Other than ensaymada, they also have their signature oversized Pandesal, baked goods and other delectable pastries. Next stop is their gourmet café for casual diners. They’ve posted the entire menu on a chalkboard wall. They change their menu every few days for it not to get boring, living up to the principle that says “Variety is the spice of life”. Their café is more of an experimental setup, formulating new drinks and dishes made possible by their master barista and baker Hansel Martinez. For instance, they have Elvis Milkshake – a milkshake with bacon; Inferno Milkshake – a milkshake that is spicy; Hog Heaven for breakfast – bacon wrapped longanisa and sinangag topped with tocino bits; Signature Cheesecake, where they use local ingredients: toasted coconut for the crust infused with calamansi; ube, langka and fresh durian for its layers; topped with barako whipped cream and ChocNut crumble. Imagine all seven flavors in a bite! They also have their cake for the day but don’t have the definite, bold flavors similar to their Signature Cheesecake. When we came, there was chocolate cake, carrot cake and banana cloud cake. We asked what’s Hansel’s inspiration are and how he came up with these recipes, he jested and replied “I don’t know. They just come

out. I just want to create delicious food and drinks”.

Plus points for their set up that it is a perfect venue for friends to hang out with while waiting for their next class, or students to chill while they study and do their reports. Jump in to their second floor that houses the Asian Fusion buffet. It can lodge up to 150 people, perfect for family gatherings, reunions and meetings. It also has three function rooms to use. What’s great about the restaurant is that they don’t have the same old dishes, but their cuisines for the buffet change everyday. The day we visited 7Flavors, it was Italian Night where all stations serve Italian-inspired dishes. They have 24 different dishes in total, and unlike other mainstream buffets, they don’t copy other dishes but come up with their own unique dishes. What makes 7Flavors stand out is how different they are compared to other restaurants. It’s their selling point. People don’t ordinarily purchase and eat what they can find in 7Flavors. 7Flavors is quite tricky yet ‘sulit’ for Isko’s budget to spend with after a tiring day! Splurge and spend the break with your friends or have a night out with your family there.

“She came home exhausted from school, opening the fridge and making a sandwich or eating whatever was inside, then waits impatiently for dinner, lying unproductively in bed and thinking of getting another snack while starting up on homework.” That was me three years ago. I was 170 pounds of curves that were definitely NOT in the right places. If you saw me back in 2012, you would not be able to recognize me then. During my 17th birthday, I decided to change for the better, achieving my goal of losing more than 1/3 of my weight (60 pounds!) before summer 2015. Many people ask me how I lost the weight, and usually, I find it difficult to answer the question, because it wasn’t just a one-way street. It was a path of roadblocks and various directions. So I decided to compile all of what I remember during my weight loss journey, create tips on how to effectively lose the weight and help others do the same! 1. Begin slowly I started off promising myself that I would workout strenuously and only eat fruits and vegetables. While that worked for a few days, I eventually went back to my old ways. My tip is to make changes gradually instead of cutting things out cold turkey. Add a 15 minute walk to your day, or settle for half a cup of rice instead of a whole cup. That way, you aren’t depriving yourself of what you want, nor are you killing yourself working out. Increase the activity and lessen your intake as you go, and you will soon get used to it. 2. Track your progress Take photos of yourself! It may be embarrassing at first, but you’ll soon appreciate it! I used to do this when I was feeling down or in need of motivation. You may not see the change in the mirror at times, but you’ll definitely see it in progress photos. That, and posting your ‘before and after’ photo on Facebook will make you pretty proud of yourself. 3. Do NOT restrict, eat in moderation I would really like to exaggerate this tip. NEVER deprive yourself of the food you want. Eat in moderation. If you want a cookie, go eat a cookie! Just don’t finish the whole jar. Treat yourself to the food you love once in awhile. Eating something “bad” isn’t bad at all, but eating too much of it is. I made the mistake of depriving myself of the things I love, and trust me, a life without the food you love is not a life at all! Now, I eat 80% “clean” (fruits and vegetables) and 20% “dirty” (ice cream and pizza!). 4. Love yourself This is your typical “everyone is beautiful in their own way” tip. Your body is not perfect and never will be. You will find flaws that you won’t be able to fix, and that’s okay! It is these flaws that make us stronger and make us who we are. Embrace them! We may look at ourselves in the mirror and feel fat, or we may not like the numbers we see on the scale, but remember, weight does not define the beauty you have within you. Do it for the health benefits and not only for the appearances.

5. NEVER give up This tip goes for every journey you take, from studies, work, or any goal you’d like to achieve. Losing weight isn’t something that happens overnight. You WILL be frustrated on the lack of change and there will be times you’ll give up because you’re just so tired. Falling down is inevitable, but it is your choice whether to stand up or remain there. When times like these come, I just lace up my shoes and go for a run! Remember the reason why you’re doing this, and keep your eye on the prize. These are only some of the things I learned while I was losing weight. Feel free to approach me for support or questions. What are you waiting for? Get up and begin! 9 | BUSINESS & LIFESTYLE

We yearn to feel someone else’s pulse with our hand. We aspire for a moment of silence to just gaze at the person we deem as ours. We want information about the person’s; hopes and dreams, their fears, things that make them laugh, or things that make them cry, so we could do whatever humanly possible there is to prevent them from shedding tears. And all of these are a secret. We won’t tell them… because all of the above make us cower. What if they don’t feel the same way? What if they won’t accept the sacrifices we’re willing to do for them? Are they really worth it? What if the person we are in awe of is only a false image? The cynics, the helpless, and even the most disgusting teens are capable of loving. However, let’s not forget we’re kids. We’re naïve and emotionally unstable. We look for love on the wrong places like

clubs and online dating apps. We look for love at wrong times like when we’re just lonely or angry with someone who broke our hearts. We fall in-love, yet get tired easily; and why? It’s because we crave so much of it that we tend to rush when we aren’t ready for it. We are most curious when it comes to love. When we have feelings for someone, we don’t see the wrong in them. We literally think of them as perfect. We flip hard and immediately; which is foolishly bad. We fall in-love with words, rather than actions. And we fall in-love with ideas and thoughts, instead of reality. I’m not saying it is wrong to fall in-love at this age, it’s just that we have to be in-love for the right reasons. Let’s stop creating false ideas and find someone who’s not perfect from what we think, but perfect for what the person in actuality is. 12 | MASTERPIECES

the young achiever

There is a side about our Mr. PUP San Juan Christian Cenon Aquino that many don’t know. During his free time, he loves surfing the net, watching the news, and other stuff. He hates vegetables, loves watching movies but only sci-fi genre. His favorite sport is chess since he was young. During his previous academic year, Christian was also an achiever. When he was in elementary, he was at the top 7 of the graduating batch with honors. When he was in high school, he was the Student Council President and received a leadership award of their batch. The title holder of Mr. PUP San Juan comes from the Accountancy program. This goes to show that BSA students are not just good in academics, but can also show their talents in front of an audience. Christian Cenon Aquino proved it when he stepped up in the competition; He performed talents out of his comfort zone, then won the Mr. PUP San Juan pageant. It was a very tough pageant. There were talent shows, and competition was very stiff among the contestants because all of them were talented, and at the same time smart. The rehearsals were stressful during the preparations of the pageant.

Christian was just a regular BSA student when he joined the Mr. and Ms. PUP San Juan pageant. The competition was difficult and frustrating for him because the activities done in the pageant were not his interests such as dancing. “I suck at dancing” according to him. He was intimidated by the other contestants because they were good at it and were doing it right. But it didn’t stop him from practicing to perfect his moves and make it right. Christian is also not photogenic. He doesn’t take selfies frequently, can’t project himself in front of a camera, and thus made it uncomfortable for him to do the photo shoot. He managed to get out of his comfort zones and showcase the other side of him that a lot of his friends did not know about him. His talents and good intellectual skills in the question and answer portion led him to win the pageant, and capture the title of Mr. PUP San Juan. He has the perspective that each and every one of us has his own purpose in life; that we exist for a reason, and we are bound to have a good future. This kind of perspective helped him win the competition and like Jannie our Ms. PUP San Juan, he won the recognition and admiration of the PUP San Juan community. After Christian won the pageant, his college life changed and transformed him into a more confident person. (Romeo Pangilinan)

the girl next door

Jannie Dela Concepcion is a simple girl with a big dream of becoming a web developer. She’s currently taking up Bachelor of Science in Information Technology in PUP San Juan. Her first year in the university was typical, just like what any other student experiences. During her leisure time, she loves reading books but selective to interesting topics like mysteries and thriller. Jannie’s favorite hobby is biking and treats it as her sport. She is also friendly that’s why her circle of friends come from different courses besides her blockmates. She also likes to sing but doesn’t like to join in any singing contests. Jannie was an ordinary college girl, but her college life changed when she became Miss PUP San Juan of 2015. It was the 7th founding anniversary of the university when she was encouraged to join the pageant. Even though Jannie doesn’t really want to join the said pageant because of the amount of responsibility that she was about to face, she proceeded and took the challenge to showcase her inner talents and proved that she wasn’t just “beauty and brains”. At the same time, during her practices in preparations for the pageant, Jannie took the opportunity of making new friends. She met new acquaintances and some of those helped and supported her in the competition. Jannie wasn’t expectant throughout the event that she was going to win. She didn’t even want to win at all because she perceived that she doesn’t deserve to win the pageant. Though, when it was about time for the question and answer portion, Jannie was certain of her answer and mentioned her best friend with regards to the question. With all that, Jannie won the pageant and became Miss PUP San Juan. After the pageant, she gained recognition and admiration from other students of the campus. Her responsibilities increased as she was to be a good role model in the university. She engaged herself in different projects to help and contribute in achieving the goals of the university. Winning that pageant gave her the realization that she has to set a good example inside the university. Jannie wants to promote cleanliness in the campus, gender equality, as well as to boost their self-esteem. Jannie was indeed deserving of that title and to be called Miss PUP San Juan. Jannie didn’t win just because she has the most beautiful face or the most intellectual answer in the question and answer portion but because she has a sense of responsibility and exerts effort towards achieving her goals. It was 11th day of April when they went early to our campus, not to maintain cleanliness of the school as janitors, but to take the PUPCET. Armed with their pencils and knowledge, they took the entrance examination despite the fact that they had less advantage among the 600 PUPCET takers, they only hoped that they would be able to pass and be accommodated in a state-university that offers quality education with the lowest tuition fee. At the age of 26, Mr. Eduardo Sacoco is already married with one son and currently living with his parents in Quezon City. He wants to be a CPA but his grades don't qualify from the required grade under BSA program that's why he chose BSED Math as it was his second choice when he enrolled last May 2015.

In 1955, Einstein wrote that “when the Earth’s mantle shifts, the poles follow”, and he is correct. According to scientists, our planet is heading back into an Ice Age, and this is shifting the global climate patterns wrapping the Earth. The Earth’s axis is increasingly unstable, which is causing an increase in earthquakes, and the magnetic poles are weakening, allowing more sunlight to penetrate our thinning atmosphere.

Have you watched “Armageddon”, “Eruption”, “The Core”, “The Day After Tomorrow”, “2012”, or the latest, “San Andreas”? These are all great, and mixed-emotions movies. There is comedy, action, drama, and romance, of course. And these movies provide horror too. Not in an “Insidious” and “The Conjuring” way, but more like in a life-anddeath situation way. These movies show us the realities of what we are doing to Earth and the fate that is waiting us.

of these extinctions are the natural calamities and disasters that took place. Earthly extinction is inescapable and should be taken seriously, especially, by the youth, who now own our Planet with more than 50 percent of the world population.

Natural calamities are natural. However, because of our addiction to technology, money, and power, it doesn’t seem so natural anymore. We are provoking Earth to hunt us with its natural calamities. Humanity is so Throughout Earth’s lifetime, there have been proud that we think our man-made world five major extinctions, and the main causes could save us.

gether in a restaurant are quiet because they are using their phones, being late because it can easily be explained through a text, listening to music or chatting with other people instead of family. The list goes on, and it begs me to ask the question: Are our gadgets really our helpful pal?

Everywhere I go, all I see are people looking down on their phones, texting other people, updating statuses or playing Clash of Clans just to appear busy. While it’s become a good way to kill time and communicate with others, I start to notice that our gadgets have also become a hindrance. People dining to-

Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful for my phone and laptop. It’s become a lifesaver during projects and times where I really need to talk to someone. Even I am guilty of using my phone during family gatherings and outings with friends. When I’m alone, I look down at my phone, pretending to text someone when I’m actually just scrolling through my Facebook timeline. I know many people who do the same. Our phones have become a useful tool for alleviating awkward situations, but it’s also become an easier tool to drop friends, ignore everything around us and submerse ourselves into a whole different world

While we may choose to wait and pray for the inevitable ‘Big One’ earthquake coming up, we believe that we should also take action for it. Of course, we won’t be able to predict exactly when it will arrive, but the best thing to do is to be prepared and ready for the worst. It isn’t similar to The Hunger Games where you’ll need to train to run like lightning or hunt for food. Simple but very effective acts like packing necessities for future emergencies will help. Remember to put your emergency phones, blankets, flashlights, some canned goods and water bottles for those “just in case” moments. Acquainting yourself with safety tips and first aid services is needed if ever you or someone with you gets injured during the earthquake itself. There is no “best” way to prepare for an earthquake, but it is always best to keep those things in mind in order to prevent worse situations from happening because of it.

of social media or games. I feel like that our generation today is a generation of heads facing downwards and never seizing the day, always too busy updating their locations and posting photos to appear happy in front of others.

Sadly, we can’t live without our phones, but we can hopefully start to look up and be aware of the people and things that surround us. Instead of staying in bed all day using your laptop, why not go out and explore? Instead of awkwardly glancing at your phone when out with family or friends, why not look up and talk? There is more beauty in the world than the photos we can Google on our phones, more things to learn from others by asking them face to face rather than messaging them. There are tons of things to see and learn once our phones are down and we face the world. So look up! (Janessa Erin G.
