Dahil bakasyon, karamihan ng mga Isko ay butas na naman ang bulsa, kabilang na ako. Kaya sa araw na ito, dose pesos lamang ang badyet ko para sa meryenda. Eksaktong nakita ko si Manong Felix at tinanong ko siya kung ano ang kayang bilhin ng dose pesos ko. Sabi niya, anim na pisong fishball = 9 fishballs + apat na squid balls + isang kikiam + isang napakalamig na ice tubig (Sige, i-calculate mo pa, tama „yan, ako pa!). Marahil hanggang fishball, kwek-kwek at malamig na tubig lamang ni Manong ang kaya kong mabili at hindi pang Starbucks, Yellow Cab at Krispy Kreme. Sa panahon ngayon, tila wala ka na halos mabibili sa halagang dose pesos. Pero sa PUP, sa halagang dose pesos ay kaya na nitong maabot ang iyong mga pangarap sa buhay. Tinulungan ako nito na bigyang-pansin ang mga dapat unahin sa panahong ito. Binigyan din ako ng isang oportunidad na gaya ng nakararami. Marahil sa iba, ang 12 piso ay kulang pa para makamit ang mga gusto nila sa buhay. Branding nga pala ang topic namin. :D ISKONG CEO Speaking of Marketing. Sa mundo ng Marketing, maihahalintulad ko ang PUP bilang isang katangi-tangi na brand. Sa mababang halaga ay nakakapagbigay ito ng dekalidad na edukasyon at hindi lamang nagbebenefit ang PUP (company) bagkus nagbebenefit din dito ang mga estudyante (customer) para makapagtapos ng pag-aaral at para sa ikauunlad ng ating bansa (society). ISKONG EKONOMISTA Kung babalikan natin ang mga itinala ukol sa aralin sa Ekonomiks, ito marahil ang tinatawag na “opportunity cost” para sa “long-term investment”. Ayon sa Investopedia, “Opportunity cost is the cost of an alternative that must be forgone in order to pursue a certain action. Put another way, the benefits you could have received by taking an alternative action.” Gamitin natin itong formula, P12/yunit x average units na 21 x 2 semestre x 4 na taon sa kolehiyo = P2,016.00. Marahil ang P2,016.00 na ito ay maaari mo nang ipangkain sa isang buffet pero dahil sa “long-term investment” ng gobyerno sa atin sa pamamagitan ng PUP ay pwede natin ito kitain pagkatapos natin makapag-aral. Tiyak ako na hindi lamang pang-isang araw na buffet, bagkus makakainan mo pa halos lahat ng restawran sa buong bansa. Hindi lamang maibabalik ang dose pesos mo, madodoble at matitriple pa ito. Lalo pang nagpatunay na maraming naabot ang dose pesos ko dahil nitong susunod na semestre ay nasa ikaapat na taon na ako. Ang dose ko ay katumbas ng pagtulong sa pamilya ko at sa pag-unlad ng ating bayan. Saan ka pa? Hospitality Management professor and head bartender of Tanduay Distillers Inc., Jake P. Alano bagged the 3rd place in the MIX IT UP 2014: “The Search for the Best Mixologist” (Open Category) last May 17, 2014 at the World Trade Center, Pasay City. This is in line with the 12th Philippine Food Expo hosted and organized by Philippine Bartending Com and Pinoytender Management Consultancy.

NACABUAN JOINS IYLC 2014 Lorenzo Martin S. Nacabuan, a second year Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) student of PUP San Juan joined in the International Youth Leaders Conference (IYLC) with a theme “Living A Legacy, Leaving A Legacy” last March 21, 2014 at the Samsung Hall, SM Aura Premier. The conference was hosted by Association Internationale des Étudiants en sciences Économiques et Commerciales (AIESEC) and gathered college-level student youth leaders from different countries all over the world to create an empowered and united community. Speakers were Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago; Noreen Bautista – co-founder of Ecologenuity Inc.; Audrey Elumba – AIESEC President in the Philippines; Natashya Gutierrez – a Yale University Journalism Scholar; and Sabrina Ongkiko – known for her talk in TEDXADMU: Our Return on Investment, shared their knowledge towards world-class leadership, selfleadership, inspiring action and collaboration. The AIESEC Youth Leadership Awards was also one of the highlighted events which recognized different university organizations in the Philippines and their leaders who exemplified leadership in their field. Nacabuan, who had also been a part of the ARC Young Leaders Camp underwent a strict screening before he became qualified to participate in the said event. (Lorenzo Martin S. DOLE, PAMAMARISAN Conducts Labor Education Seminar in PUPSJ A labor education for graduating students was conducted by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and PAMAMARISAN field office last October 1, 2013 at the PUPSJ MultiPurpose Hall. The topic “Entrepreneurship and Wage Development – A Comprehensive Guide in Providing Jobseekers with an Informed Career Path” was discussed by Ms. Alicia Delmundo. She explained the characteristics a jobseeker should possess, how to conquer, job market, different kinds of employment tools and the dos and don‟ts in the working industry. Meanwhile, Mr. Dexter Javier tackled Labor Management Education on Employment Relations putting emphasis on employment relationship, employment contract and management rights. The seminar concluded with the aspiration of the graduating students to achieve their goals and dream jobs. (Mary Angel B. Deanon)

Hon. Joseph Victor G. Ejercito, senator of the Republic of the Philippines and the prime mover in the establishment of the only state university in San Juan City, accentuated that good education is a foundation of a bright future, in his message to the graduates as the speaker in the 3rd Commencement Exercises of PUP San Juan Campus last May 12, 2014 at the Fil-Oil Flying V Arena, San Juan City.

PUPSJ in 3rd ARC Camp, a Success ! Five students of PUP San Juan were among the 40 selected delegates in the said camp: Luis Alfonso Fernando (BS Education major in English 1), Edilberto Joseph Frando (Bachelor in Banking and Finance 2), Moses Jerome Lucas (BS Information Technology 1), Lorenzo Nacabuan (BS Information Technology 1) and Angelo Tamaño (BS Information Technology 1). The Young Leader’s Camp gathered these new breed of student leaders from different colleges and universities with the goal of building a better society and transforming the generation into a more progressive one.

The ARC Young Leaders Camp is a three-day annual event filled with different indoor and outdoor activities where leadership, cooperation, unity and the like, and where the youth are challenged to become future and

aspiring leaders of today‟s generation. Turning 3 this year 2014, the ARC Young Leaders Camp was guided by the theme “Empower. Engage. Inspire” and was held from February 12-14, 2014 at Baras, Rizal.

The PUP San Juan students won several citations and awards during the camp. Headed by Lucas and Nacabuan, together with other school delegates, their team grabbed the 1st place for the group community project proposal. Prof. Romeo P. Peña, a faculty member of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Sta. Mesa and San Juan Campus, travelled to Japan and presented his research paper in the International Symposium on Language, Linguistics, Literature and Education

(ISLLLE) as part of the Asia-Pacific Education & Research Association (APERA) Conference Program last November 8, 2013 at the Rihga Royal Hotel, Osaka. His paper was entitled ―The Novels in the Early 21st Century in the

Philippines: Acknowledging the Sensibility of Popular Culture in the Works of Japanese Novelist Haruki Murakami by the Young Blood Filipino Novelists‖. It discussed the integration of popular culture to the works of young blood novelists from the prime universities in the Philippines. Among many other achievements of Prof. Peña, this isn't merely a paper. It is a commitment to pursue his perspective with the aim of contributing actively to literature, to give new understanding and reading to the works of young blood writers of the current generation. This year, ISLLLE received over 800 papers from 42 countries covering Africa, America, Asia, Australia and Europe. ISLLLE aims to bring together researchers, practitioners, and educators with interests in language, linguistics, literature, and education at all levels from around the world. (Maria Carolina L. HM Students in 2014 Umami Challenge PUP San Juan Hospitality Junior and Sophomore students joined the 2014 Ajinomoto Umami Culinary Challenge held at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City last January 28. The Ajinomoto Umami Culinary Challenge is an inter-school cooking competition focusing on the tastiness of Umami as the 5th basic taste. Fifty two different universities and colleges in Luzon competed in four different categories: Best Filipino Umami Dish, My Eat Well-Live Well Plate, Umami Bento Meal, and My Own Umami Creation.

Fabian were the representatives for the Umami Bento Meal category; Juniors Paula Izzabel E. Tumanguil, Kathleen I. Datu and Mark Angelo P. Buella for My Umami Creation category; while Jovet D. Pitogo, Cristito Q. Rusiana Jr., and Kier James P. Guellos for Best Filipino Umami Dish – Luzon category. Professors Rosan C. Pizarro and Rolando T. Yu trained the students. PUPSJ ranked 18th out of the 52 The PUP San Juan students showcased their skills as they participate in the 2014 participating schools which is as a Ajinomoto Umami Culinary Challenge.

NEWS PASKONG UGNAYANG PILIPINO GIVES WAY TO THE RISE OF OSCA The Polytechnic University of the Philippines San Juan Campus (PUPSJ) successfully conducted a benefit concert at the Campus‟ grounds last December 18, 2013 to generate funds for the instruments and creation of Organizations of the Students for Culture and the Arts (OSCA). Prof. Alan A. Navida, adviser of OSCA, proudly introduced the newly formed chorale known as PUPSJ Singing Scholars and the PUPSJ Band known as Poly Union Pack Band who serenaded the audience that night.

According to Prof. Navida, they came with the theme Paskong Ugnayang Pilipino to introduce the idea of sharing, with the PUPSJ community together with the city officials contributing any amount in supporting the choir and other groups. Prof. Navida also emphasized that the benefit concert is about the feeling of belongingness as one can say that one has been part of the fulfillment of the goal which is to establish the OSCA that serves as a legacy of A.Y. 2013-2014 for our Alma Mater regardless

To achieve their vision and priorities and to align with the 8-point agenda of the President of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (6. Institutionalizing Civil Society Engagement and Involved Extension Service Program), the Student Assembly (SA) A.Y. ‟13 -„14 responded to the changing needs and demands of the community through the “Adopt-ABarangay” extension program held last October 24, 2013 at PUP San Juan

Different academic organizations were tapped to carry-out activities that would be beneficial to both students and parents: Story Telling from Young Educators Society (YES), Savings Awareness by the Junior Philippine Financial Executives Society (JPFES) and games conducted by the Paraseist. Parents engaged in the Livelihood Program of the Entrepreneurial Management Society (EM); Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) made an effort to ask Ms. Louvenna Mallari, a SunLife Financial Advisor to give a talk on Financial and Savings Awareness; and a lecture on Basic Computer Skills was conducted by the Governing League of IT Challengers (GLITCH). The Hospitality Management (HM) Society was in-charge of cooking for the Feeding Program. Afterwards, the SA gave each student an envelope of school supplies. Lastly, a fun and joyous trick or treat from the campus Administration and Faculty members ended the program. Manabat Sanagustin & Co. Mr. Ilan discussed Debt Securities and Investment and managed to relate his learnings and experiences about the topic using his presentation and a simple calculation activity. He taught everyone the simple secret in business: “The higher the risk, the higher the yield of return”. Mr. Mark Jensen N. Sy, the second speaker, finished Bachelor of Arts Major in Economics and Bachelor of Science in Commerce Major in Management of Financial Institutions at the De La Salle University Manila. He is currently working as a Global Equity Trader at Citisecurities, Inc. and is a Certified Securities Representative and one of the faculty members of Caylum Trading Institute founded by Mr. Edmund Lee. Mr. Sy‟s topic was Stocks and Equity Investment. He talked about how the stock market works and encouraged participants to invest at a young age and to retire rich. The said seminar served as one of the stepping stones of the students who have Financial Management subject to improve knowledge and skills in their line of work.(Christopher Arlo V. Proceeds were used to buy musical instruments such as Banduria, Laud and Octavia which the Rondalla Ensemble Choir is now using. BSHM 3-1 Organizes HM Ball The Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) 3-1 through the advisorship of Prof. Rosan Pizarro organized an event entitled “Hospitality Management Ball: An Eve to Remember the Night to Get Together” last March 7 at PUPSJ Auditorium. The event aimed to unite all BSHM students, have fun, and create unforgettable moments that will be treasured. It started with an entourage followed by the formal program with games and intermission number in between. Awards were also given to: Jolina Marie Fernandez (BSHM 3-1) and Psyche Recato (BSHM 3-2) for the best dress; Ervyn Angelo Sunga (BSHM 3-1) and Rinalyn Resuell (BSHM 3-1) for the couples of the night; Renz Varilla (BSHM 1-1) as King of the Night and Erika Figaroa (BSHM 2-1) as the Queen of the Night. 3 BSA Students Contend in 2nd NCR Cup Jr. Three Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) 3-1 students contended in the 2nd NCR Cup Jr. organized by the National Federation of Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants – National Capital Region (NFJPIA-NCR) last December 4, 2013 at Far Eastern University (FEU) Manila. Precious Joyce P. Alzate, Ma. Kisha Therese O. Cruel and Jaeron Stephan E. Mendoza battled with other 36 participating schools in the subjects Practical Accounting 1, Law on Obligations and Contracts, Economics

and Business Math. ―We are very happy even though we did not win because the experience we had was worthy. But next time we will do our best to make PUPSJ and its JPIA proud‖, Cruel says. The said event had a theme “A Call to Supremacy: Soaring to Greater Heights” which introduced a competitive environment that challenged not only the intelligence of the participants but also their accuracy, speed and strategic ability. THE BURDEN OF KNOWING SEX For 16 years of my existence, no one ever bothered to educate me with sex. Not my parents, not my school, not my friends and of course, not the church that I used to go to. Yes, no one. And so I was forced to learn about it by myself. Basically, sex is one of the few words that catches our attention. Whenever we see it in a magazine or in a newspaper or hear it from someone, there‟s this urge to find out what‟s the topic all about – is it really about sex, or not? In some countries, particularly the Westerns, they view sex as a normal activity for both adults and teenagers: whether they are married or not, in a serious relationship or just friends or dating. They exercise this human activity with no malice. As you have watched in western movies, if you graduate high school and you‟re still a virgin regardless of your gender, that‟s a shame on your part. See, for these western countries, sex isn‟t really a big deal. In most cities specifically in the United States of America, sex education is integrated into their classrooms as a regular part of instruction. In the Philippines, on the other hand, the term “sex” is full of malice and vulgarity. Just imagine mentioning this inscrutable three -letter word; people, particularly the old and conservative ones would label you as “rude”, “disrespectful”, “ill-mannered”, etc.. However, can we blame them? Of course not; for we are living in a society with an iron grip of moral standards and conservatism -- dating back from the Spanish regime. Some of us are still walking around this circular path of Padre Damaso‟s teachings in Rizal‟s Noli me Tangere: dictating to us what to and what not to do, which, by the way, makes us all hypocrites at the end of the day.

#USAPANG ISKO:

In our generation, most of the time, we only encounter the topic sex with our friends, classmates and in the internet, but not much or not at all with our parents. We get little information from our peers of the same age brought about by curiosity. I recently asked my Aunt what sex is, not because I didn‟t know what it is but because I wanted to know if she‟s willing to discuss it. She just smiled and told me that I‟m too young to know. Maybe she‟s right but maybe she‟s somehow wrong. I always feel like everyone in our family is keeping his mouth shut when it comes to sex. Perhaps it‟s not because they don‟t want us to know what it is all about, but because they don‟t know how to convey their thoughts. Probably, they feel awkward to share what they know since they themselves have no background on sex education. They find malice in educating us about sex. That is why you can still hear children up to now calling their private organs “birdie” and “flower”. Now, if the family -- the basic unit of society and the ideal source of first learnings -- is incapable of providing knowledge about sex, then it would be better if the government takes the responsibility in order to address these needed knowledge and values. It would be difficult for the children to understand things that are hidden and not well explained. We cannot deny that we are in the state of adolescence, whereas we have these raging hormones that are effortlessly stimulated by uncensorable knowledge from non-school, techno-social environment. Such stimulation could possibly bring us all to the world of undesirable consequences. According to the Young Adult Fertility Survey conducted by the University of the Philippines Population Institute, there‟s a significant

percentage of early to late adolescents who are already into premarital sex. This result reflects our society and generation today. For example, our friends in high school who have their babies before or after graduation, moreover, Nene in “Katorse” who feared about her mother‟s reaction rather than the burdens she‟ll carry after having unsafe sex. Problems regarding ignorance in sex are indeed rampant. Sex Education‟s intention is not to encourage children and teenagers to engage into sexual activities but to widen the learning instead. As long as highly influential institutions like the Catholic Church are there and are willing to guide and give assistance,

we will not forget how to draw the line between what is moral and not. If our government will continue to stick to all the medieval age thinking, I doubt if we could help our country from preventing Rapid Population Growth. Although we have the Reproductive Health Law, it is not enough to just provide contraceptives and condoms; someone has to teach the children, particularly the teenagers and young adults the effects of sex. Let us be open-minded in these issues, let us think of the future and more importantly of today. (Maria Yvonne F. Gonzales)

Ano ang ideal student leader mo? Kung ihahalintulad ito sa isang lugar, anong lugar ito at bakit?

Carmina Ardizone (BBF 3): Dapat responsable, kayang pagsabayin ang mga gawain ng walang napapabayaan at marunong makisama sa ibang tao. Kung ihahalintulad ko siya sa isang lugar, siguro ay St. Peter‟s Basilica sa Vatican City kasi doon sa lugar na iyon kapag pumunta ka ay para raw pinagsama-sama na ang mga magagandang lugar na pwede mong makita. Kung sa tao, syempre kung makikita mo lahat ng magagandang ugali sa kanya masasabi ko na siya ay ang ideal student leader para sa akin. Renato Cogal (BSA 3): Para sa akin, „yung student leader na palaging nakangiti bawat oras at bawat pagkakataon, parang tanawin ng Santorini, Greece, maging umaga man o gabi ay kaakit-akit sa mata at nakapagbibigay ng sigla. Friedrich Ettiene Miranda (BSIT 3): Masayahin dapat ang isang huwarang student leader sa kabila ng mga problema sa paaralan, parang Bacolod City na tinaguriang City of Smiles.

Mariel Brotamante (BSEM 4): Kung ihahalintulad ko ang isang student leader sa isang lugar, hindi na kailangan pang lumabas sa kung saan nabuo ang kanyang pagkatao at kung saan siya namuhay. Jaiah Noreen Paje (BSEM 1): Ang ideal student leader ay responsable, iniisip yung mga nasasakupan at kung paano mapapaunlad ang mga bagay na makakatulong sa kapwa-estudyante. Katulad ito ng Makati City na maayos, maunlad, at maraming benepisyo sa mga estudyante lalo na sa mga senior citizens. Nayeth Villaros (BSA 4): Ideal student leader ko: „yung seryoso pero kayang makisama sa iba at gawing masaya ang gawain nila, „yung mabait pero iginagalang at kapag nagsalita ay siguradong nakikinig ang lahat at sinusunod siya. Kaya niyang mamuno at nakikinig din sa opinyon ng lahat. Open siya sa pagkakamali pero hindi nagtotolerate. Nababalanse niya ang mga bagay-bagay. Maihahalintulad ko siya sa isang beach kasi open area. Maraming nagpupunta rito at lumalapit para sa bagay na makakapagpaginhawa sa kanila. Maraming bagay na pwedeng matutunan at maranasan pero may rules at regulations na dapat sundin. Parang leader with open ears sa lahat at maraming bagay na kayang i-offer sa mga kasama niya.

Virgilio Teñozo, Jr. (BSEDEN 3): A man who has integrity, admits his own mistakes and have a good heart, that‟s my ideal student leader. He should know how to listen to the sentiments and opinions of others, shows respect and values time. A true leader does not only mean that he is on top but he can be in the middle or in the last as long as the relationship with each other is comfortable. If I will compare my ideal student leader to a place, it would be Makati City, simply because it is one of the top performing cities, cares and supports to the people especially in times of needs.

Isang Buhay na Kasiya-Siya at ‘Di Kasyang-Kasya “Ang tao kasi, kung walang pangarap sa buhay, walang direksyon. Kaya dapat mangarap ka kahit na sabihin mong mahirap ka.” - MANONG FISHBALL

Felix Virtus ang tunay niyang pangalan, 41 taong gulang at nabubuhay kasama ang maybahay na si Elizabeth at anak na si Princess. Tubong Bicol, Camarines Sur si Manong Felix at lumaki sa isang mahirap na pamilya. Noong siya‟y bata pa lamang, pangarap niyang maging isang abogado. Ngunit dahil sa kahirapan, hanggang ikaapat na baitang lamang ang kanyang natapos. Sa edad na labindalawa, nagtrabaho siya bilang isang mangingisda. Makalipas ang dalawang taon, sinubok na rin niya ang pagiging panadero. Dahil sa „di sapat na kita, nagpasya siya na lumuwas ng Maynila sa pag-asang naroon ang magandang kapalaran. Pagdating sa Maynila, hindi naging madali ang lahat tulad ng inaasahan. Maraming trabaho ang pinasukan niya. Nariyan ang pagiging houseboy sa isang pamilya at maging isang factory worker ngunit natanggal dahil sa pagsali sa isang strike gawa ng mababang pasahod. Nahirapan siyang

makahanap muli ng mapapasukan ngunit hindi naging dahilan ito para sumuko. Hanggang matanggap siya bilang isang service crew sa isang restawrant. Matapos ang isa‟t kalahating taon ay tumaas ang kanyang posisyon at naging assistant cook. Ngunit nang nais na siyang gawing regular sa trabaho ay tinanggihan niya ito dahil sa kanyang kagustuhan na mas umangat ang kanyang buhay. Matapos ang pangyayaring iyon, pinasok na rin ni Manong ang pagiging gym instructor at dito niya nakilala ang kanyang maybahay na noo‟y namamasukan sa isang parlor. Nang sila ay maging isang pamilya at magkaroon ng anak, nagpasya si Manong Felix na subukan ang pagpaparenta ng mga orihinal na DVDs. Makalipas ang sandaling panahon, unti- unting humina ang negosyo gawa ng pagkalat ng mga piratang CD. Hindi sumuko ang mag-asawa at nagdesisyon na magtinda ng isda sa palengke. Hindi naging madali ang lahat. Dahil sa walang sariling puhunan, unti-unti silang nalugi. Hanggang sa maging caretaker sila ng isang malaking bahay sa San Juan at dito na sinimulan ni Manong Felix ang pagtitinda ng mga fishball at iba pa. Naging maayos ang kita ni Manong Felix dito dahil na rin ang kanyang puhunan ay ipinagkaloob ng may-ari ng bahay na kanilang binabantayan. Sa kanyang bagong negosyo na pagtitinda ng fishball, hindi maiiwasan ang pangungutya ng iba. Isang araw, isang construction worker ang lumapit sa kanya at sabi,”Bakit „di ka na lang pumasok sa trabaho ko, kaysa magtiis ka sa kakarampot na kita sa pagtitinda ng

fishball?”. At ang nasabi na lang ni Manong ay kung tutuusin daw ay higit pa sa minimum wage ang kanyang kinikita sa loob lamang ng apat hanggang limang oras na pagtitinda sa kalsada. Makikita rito na kahit ano pa man ang hanapbuhay ng isang tao, „di dapat ito minamaliit sapagkat bawat isa sa mga ito ay may bahagi na pinupunan sa ating lipunan. Sa ngayon hindi na ganoon kahirap ang buhay ni Manong Felix. Patunay dito ay kasalukuyan niyang pinag-aaral ang kanyang anak na si Princess sa Jose Rizal University na sadya namang may kamahalan ang matrikula. Bukod pa rito ay nagagawa pa niyang kumuha ng pribadong tutor para sa kanyang anak. Dahil ba ito sa sobrang laki ng kita ni Manong? Hindi. Isang bagay na labis kong hinangaan sa kanilang mag-asawa ay ang maayos nilang paghawak ng salapi. Pinag-iipunan nila ang mga pangangailangan ng kanilang anak sa kanyang pag-aaral. Sa dami ng aral ng buhay sa kwento ni Manong Felix, „di kakasya sa buong pahayagan na ito ang lahat. Ngunit kung may paborito man ako sa lahat ng ito, ito ay ang kanyang paniniwala na bilang isang magulang, hindi mo dapat tingnan ang iyong anak bilang isang empleyado mo na balang araw ay maghahanap-buhay para sa iyo at para iangat ang buhay mo. FEATURE Indonesian Artistic Expression

The multi-awarded Indonesian Folklore Group KTF UI Radha Sarisha (in half-kneeled) together with (from L-R): Atty. The door opened, then suddenly a harmonious music was played. Young Indonesians were gracefully dancing together. The crowd applauded as they watched the performances on stage. The young dancers were wearing costumes of different colors with instruments that seem unfamiliar. They were chanting folk songs of their country with an artistic expression. The rhythm and music was played harmoniously using a native instrument called Angklong -- a bamboo-made organ shaped like wind chimes. It has some similarities with the Kalutang of Marinduque which is like a xylophone, but produces a more complex sound. You‟ll love the way how the handsome Indonesian played one of the most popular songs which is Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars and our folk song Bahay Kubo, and all you can say is “Wow!” for it was so amazing. The fun and excitement did not stop there because the Indonesian women wearing colorful costumes resembling a recital at the United Nations performed dances which are offering to their Gods. A killerlike, scary man with eyes rolling like a

doll showed up next on stage. His eyes were bloodshot when you imagine. But when the music played, he showcased fantastic movements which are ways of welcoming visitors in their country. These were only a few glimpses of the IOV Indonesia Youth Section during their visit at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines San Juan last February 8. OIV is a worldwide organization of individuals and an institution working to document, preserve and promote all forms of folk art, both tangible and intangible. They seemed like professional dancers but they were actually students. The IOV helped them to reach their platform to channel the aspirations and talents of the students and youth from Indonesia in the field of dancing, particularly traditional dancing and music. Through the theme “Sharing Through Artistic Expression" they proved how eager they were to spread their mission that is: to increase the awareness and appreciation of all forms of folk art and folk culture. I could not even know how much I spent for the test booklets, handouts, books, including energy drinks and chocolate bars only to prepare myself for our quizzes and exams. I experienced failure

As I was browsing my newsfeed last night, I saw photos in the Facebook page of Paraseist, the official student publication of PUP San Juan, on the series of seminar-workshop and team building last March 31 to April 5. The theme was “The Better We Know, The Higher We Go” with the objective of widening every participant‟s knowledge on journalism, inculcating values which are essential to a good and effective journalism, and developing each one‟s role as a team player in the organization. Evidently seen through the photos is the delight of every member to be a part of the event. Here are some of the reactions from the participants: ―The seminar-workshop and team building was a blast! I learned many things about journalism, specifically on the power and responsibility of a journalist and the like, and I was able to enhance my skills. It was not only about journalism but also teamwork and unity of each one which created bonds. I am very thankful to be a

part of Paraseist.‖ – Regina Lyn Jaen (Clover) ―T’was not just an ordinary seminar that merely focuses on journalism, rather, it was like a camp. The organizers set guidelines and house rules for the whole event, and a corresponding punishment for every violation. Ang mga miyembro ng PUP San Juan JPIA kasama ang ilang mga opisyales ng Pambansang Pederasyon.

Tomas (UST) Medicine Cinematorium na may pamagat na “The Grand Academic Congress: Be Yourself, Create Your Future”. Ito ay naisagawa sa pagtutulungan ng National Federation of JPIA - NCR, Sycip Gorres Velayo (SGV) & Co. at gayundin ng UST JPIA. Nabalot ng tawanan at napuno ng kasiyahan ang buong Cinematorium ng magsimulang magsalita si G. Marlon Molmisa, isang Youth Inspirational Speaker at ang kasalukuyang Chief Executive Officer ng Mentors Zone, ang Top Brand Philippines‟ 2013 YouthWorkshop Training Provider of the Year. Wika niya, “Sa pag-abot ng mga pangarap, kailangan ng tao ang 3Ps: perseverance, passion at purpose. Kasama niya si G. Vinci Glodove, isa ring inspirational speaker na nanghikayat sa mga kalahok at sinabing “Sa lahat ng pangarap natin sa buhay, hanapin natin kung saan tayo masaya at huwag tayo basta-bastang susuko.” Ang sumunod na tagapagsalita ay si Ms. Clairma Mangangey, isang Certified Public Accountant (CPA) na nagtapos bilang Cum Laude sa Saint Louis University, Baguio at kasalukuyang partner sa SGV & Co. Ibinahagi niya ang kanyang mga karanasan sa

pagtatrabaho bilang isang awditor. “Maraming mga negosyante ang magtatangkang baguhin ang mga numerong nilalaman ng Financial Statements. Pambansang Kumperensiya sa Kasaysayan Ginanap sa PUPSJ Kasaysayan (BAKAS) sa pakikipagtulungan ng Departamento ng Kasaysayan ng Politeknikong Unibersidad ng Pilipinas (PUP) at ang Samahan ng Pangkasaysayan ng Tundo (SAKATUNDO) noong ika-23 hanggang ika-26 ng Abril na may temang “Ikalawang Yugto ng Kasaysayang Pilipino: Ang Pagkabuo ng Bayang Pilipino”.

Nagsilbing pook pagdarausan ang PUP San Juan Kampus ng ika-12 Pambansang Kumperensiya sa Kasaysayan na inorganisa ng Bagong

May tatlong adhikain ang pambansang kumperensya: 1) bigyang kaalaman ang mga guro sa iba‟t-ibang antas pang-edukasyon ukol sa pinakabagong resulta ng pananaliksik sa agham panlipunan; 2) bigyang pansin ang pangkabuuang pag-unawa ng mga guro sa agham panlipunan; at 3) bigyang pagpapahalaga ang mga pinakabagong pagsulong kurikular. Sa unang araw ng kumperensya ay nagkaroon ng plenarya na tumalakay sa krisis ng pamanayang Pilipino at bagong pamayanan. Isang natatangi at hindi malilimutang surpresa ang inihanda ng PUP San Juan para sa kaarawan ni Mayor Guia G. Gomez na ginanap sa MultiPurpose Hall ng bagong munisipyo noong Ika-14 ng Abril. Buong galak na nilahukan ang programa ng mga pinuno ng departamento, konsehal, punong barangay, miyembro ng Faculty at Administration (AdFa) at piling mag-aaral ng PUPSJ.

Nagsilbing tagapagpadaloy ng programa sina Gng. Donna Arellano, guidance counselor at G. Jake Alano, propesor. Bago pormal na magsimula ang programa ay isa-isang binati at inalayan ng mga puting rosas si Mayor Guia ng AdFa at mga mag-aaral na kaagad namang sinalubong ng malapistang ingay na tugtugin mula sa grupo ng Kalutang ng PUPSJ. NEWS Winners of “Stop, Look and Listen to Journalism” Seminar

FERUELO, the mouth painter!

A set of extraordinary artworks were showcased in the painting exhibit organized by the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (AMFPA), a worldwide association of painters with disabilities last February 18. The organization is home for Mr. John Roland Feruelo, the quadriplegic artist who paints using his mouth after having a spinal cord injury when he was still 24. Mr. Feruelo was the guest of honor prior to the celebration of the 6th Founding Anniversary of PUP San Juan and as part of the Buwan ng Sining 2014, a short talk was held at the Coffee Shop and the opening of his art exhibit at the Campus‟ Conference Room. Students from different courses were astounded with the fine paintings, and most could not believe that what they have seen was done using a person‟s mouth. A video clip was played throughout the day featuring the life of Mr. Feruelo -- his diving incident that caused his injury, his ups and downs in life and how he continued to do his passion of painting and how he joined the association. Paraseist conducts ‘Stop, Look and Listen to Journalism’ Seminar

To celebrate the 6th founding year of Polytechnic University of the Philippines San Juan Campus (PUPSJ), Paraseist conducted a seminar and contest in Journalism last February 18 at PUPSJ Conference Room with a theme “Stop, Look and Listen to Journalism.” The program was divided into two parts; seminar in the morning and parallel sessions followed by a contest in the afternoon. Ms. Cecille Suerte-Felipe of the Philippine Star discussed the Journalist‟s Code of Ethics while Mr. Paolo Bediones of TV5 talked about Cause Journalism in the morning session.
