COMMUNITY VALUES The Pegasus community is:
– Shalini Mattina, Associate Director of Advancment, Marketing
• Diverse, collaborative, and vibrant
The theme for The Pegasus School’s 2010/11 Annual Report,
Everything I Need to Know…I’ve Leaned at Pegasus, represents the significant ways Pegasus influences the lives of our students, faculty, parents, and alumni—our community.
Pegasus students experience joy, became aware of wonder, meet challenges and solve problems each day they enter our campus. A few of these shared experiences in 2010/11 include: pre-kindergarten paleontology lessons through hands-on bone casting; public speaking during third grade chit-chats; soil testing in fourth grade to promote healthy organic vegetables in the Kinder Garden; middle school students participating in competitive debates; and, teachers demonstrating good role-modeling. At Pegasus, students become engulfed in a community of endless opportunities to grow and discover who they are.
Pegasus teachers inspire our students to become confident and successful while expanding their own minds to enrich their skills. During the 2010/11 school year, several teachers attended conferences and workshops on gifted education. A few took classes to complete advanced degrees. They learned new tactics to facilitate effective, differentiated learning for each student. Pegasus teachers are passionate educators who take pride in exploring new areas of knowledge with their students—and their colleagues.
Pegasus parents set remarkable examples for our students as they became active
• Serious about academic life • Rich in opportunities • Nurturing of the gifted student • Engaged in the world outside the school Pegasus students love to learn, to be challenged, and to work hard; they are bright and motivated; they are joyful; they grow in both intellect and empathy. Pegasus teachers inspire, nurture and guide. They love to teach; they are flexible, creative, collaborative, and innovative; they foster each student’s individual gifts and passions. Pegasus parents value education; they work closely with the school in a partnership based on thoughtful communication and mutual respect. Pegasus alumni are lifelong learners and engaged citizens; they are confident and competent; they value their Pegasus education and friendships.
participants in their education. In 2010/11 many served on the Board of Trustees and the Strategic Planning committees. They volunteered in the classrooms and at events, became part of our Green Team in efforts to promote sustainability, and participated in fundraising efforts to improve the learning environment at Pegasus. They are part of the core that makes Pegasus unique.
Pegasus alumni took leadership roles in 2010/11. Many came back to Pegasus to share their accomplishments with our students— from an aspiring author who shared excerpts of her first published book, to a doctor who shared his passion for medicine, to a videographer and conservationist who shared her adventures about sharks, to several alumni serving as interns during our summer programs. Every shared experience at The Pegasus School is interconnected to meet one goal—to improve the the quality of education and impact the lives of our community so that we may enrich our lives and the lives of others we may encounter. Students, faculty, parents and alumni discover who they are, how to live, what to do, how to be. We’ve learned it all…at Pegasus. 3
M essage from the Head – John H. Zurn, Head of School
Dear Pegasus Families and Community Members, Last year at this time, I asked for your support for three dynamic programs that would help us prepare our students for the challenges of the future.
• Robotics – a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) program for our third through fifth graders. • Pegasus Live – a video and communications production program for our Middle School students. • International Studies Center – an expansion of our global education programs in grades Pre-K through Eight.
Thanks to your generosity, we have been able to fully fund each of these programs and far more. Donations this past school year have helped us to reshape and replant the front entrance garden, to better organize the school’s dismissal area for safety, and to give classroom makeovers to many of our existing classrooms. Donations last year helped us to purchase laptops for every fourth grade student, iPads for our eighth grade social studies program, and an extra set of laptop computers for our second grade. In the fall, we will be adding two new portable classrooms thanks in part to the many gifts we received from our community this past school year. Your support for the school went far beyond our expectations and, for your generosity, we are deeply appreciative. The depth of your support is very clear in these pages of the Annual Report, as is the leadership of the many families who helped to organize and support our fundraising efforts. Thank you Lisa and Dan Kassel for your tireless and creative leadership of our On Golden Wings Campaign. Thank you Debbie Swift and Sarah Hebert for the fabulous Vegasus! Thank you volunteers, donors, wing captains, and the endless rank of community do-gooders. We teach our children at a very young age that generosity is a meaningful, lifelong experience. Thank you all for the ways you model success for our children. Thank you all for your generosity!

B oard of Trustees Report – Leslie Seidner, Vice Chair
What a great year! At a time when many schools struggled financially, The Pegasus School was blessed with full enrollment in 2010-11. At a time when many non-profit organizations were dangerously under budget in their donations, we managed to achieve a very impressive fundraising goal. In a year when many organizations grappled with their identities, we experienced a year of clarity about who we are and what our mission is. This year at Pegasus, we experienced “resiliency.” After several years of transition, we welcomed our Head of School, John Zurn, and embarked on an exciting journey under his very capable leadership. He continually expressed his excitement and appreciation of Pegasus throughout the Fall as he learned about all of the traditions and shared experiences that make us special. In January, our entire community rallied around the Board of Trustee’s strategic planning process, devoting hours of time and thoughtful preparation that will ultimately enable us to put a meaningful strategic plan in place this Fall. Besides strategic planning and the day to day business of running one of the largest independent schools in the country, Mr. Zurn orchestrated the hiring of three new division directors, involving faculty, administrators, parents and board members in the process. His openness and communication this year were reassuring and refreshing, and the results of his efforts are already positively impacting the school. I have always been impressed with the educational and creative processes that take place every day at Pegasus, and this year I was even more astounded at the commitment of our administrators, our faculty and our parents. Change does not come easily to many of us, but this community managed to gracefully transition to our new leadership. My word to describe school year 2010-11 year is RESILIENCE. The Board of Trustees will continue to preserve what makes Pegasus unique, while supporting Mr. Zurn as he pilots Pegasus into the future. We are grateful that you are all coming along on this great ride.

F
inance Report – Eric Brandt, Chair
The Board of Trustee’s Finance Committee consists of parents, several trustees, and members of the School’s administration. The committee has both a longer term strategic view of financial health of the school as well as oversight of the annual operating budgets. The committee works with the Board’s Development, Facilities Committees, and the administration, to project the School’s long-range financial needs and goals, and oversees the investment policy for the school’s endowment. The committee also reviews the school’s operational needs and recommends the annual operating budget, including tuition levels, for approval by the Board. Each member of the Finance Committee devoted significant time and energy to the Committee’s work and deserves our thanks for a job well-done. Pegasus budget year 2010-2011 reflects a more stabilized economy and a continued commitment by the school’s administration and faculty to deliver the school’s educational program within boardapproved annual operating budget. “Hard income” from tuition and other program revenue funded nearly 95% of the operating budget. The remaining portion of the budget was funded by generous donations. As in prior years, 100% of the board and Pegasus faculty/staff demonstrated their commitment to Pegasus by making gifts to Pegasus to support its educational program. These gifts
allowed for the funding of the new robotics program, Pegasus Live and International Studies programs, Innovation Grants, new modular classrooms to help add classes, facilities enhancements, and reduce class size and an increase in financial aid.
The Board’s decision to continue to place heavy reliance on hard-income tuition and program revenue, include a capital budget, and use a portion of any surplus for capital improvements while prudently also allocating a portion of the surplus to paying down our debt and growing our endowment reflects a conservative approach to funding the schools essential operations, and allows donations to be used to enhance and enrich the educational program. We are pleased once again to conclude by reporting that budget year 2010-2011 reflects a financially sound and well-managed educational enterprise that provides our children and their teachers with one of the finest learning environments in Southern California.
I try new ideas and different methods.

D evelopment Report – Scott Herr, Development Chair
While we certainly learned a thing or two during the 2010-11 school year, what we already knew to be true was affirmed. We know that the Pegasus community is committed to our children’s education. Our community values the unique education The Pegasus School provides and year after year demonstrates the premium it puts on top quality education through its generosity. We know that in a year of transition and new leadership, Pegasus families, teachers and staff maintained their unwavering support for our school’s mission through their donations to On Golden Wings, our annual fund campaign; Vegasus, our Spring Benefit; and restricted gifts. Thanks to these generous donations, we raised $932,000. This would be a remarkable sum in any year, but it is extraordinary in this challenging economic climate. We know that it takes committed and passionate volunteers to raise substantial funds. We were fortunate to have outstanding leadership. Lisa and Dan Kassel, our On Golden Wings cochairs, brought the community together and reminded us of the value of a Pegasus education through the eyes of our alumni. They also had enthusiastic class wing captains working behind the scenes, as well as grandparent ambassadors, Sue and Joe DeCarlo, and outstanding support from the Office of Advancement. Lisa and Dan’s collective hard work, optimism and creativity paid off. From fiestas in their home, to fun videos and inspiring messages about giving, the Kassels’ enthusiasm did not waver. Sarah Hebert and Debbie Swift co-chaired Vegasus, the Spring Benefit that brought many of us back to classic Vegas with the Rat Pack, gaming and show girls. Sarah and Debbie also brought together our parent community with their enthusiastic, creative and inspiring leadership. Increased participation, a highly dedicated committee of 60+ volunteers, and the friendly competition of the online auction marked the success of this year’s event. The Spring Benefit was an opportunity for the Pegasus community to come together for the benefit of our children and to have some good fun! We also know that generous giving ensures a balanced budget. As new head of school, John Zurn, remarked at our Mt. Olympus celebration in June, “Pegasus is a caring community, a generous community, a community bonded by the value we place on education.” Your 2010-11 giving also funded innovative new student programs:
• Pegasus Live! – movie making packs & SmartBoards • Lego Robotics – Lego hardware and programming software • International Studies Center – iPads, program development, technology hardware and networking for language lab
14
In addition, the Board of Trustees approved funding for the following:
• Improved Dismissal / Carpool Area • Additional Modular Classrooms • 4th Grade Laptops • 3rd - 5th Grade Math Program Materials • Faculty Summer Innovation Grants
Restricted gifts included remodeled first, kindergarden and pre-kindergarten classrooms, as well as a new laptop cart for second grade. Beautiful new landscaping in our entryway and KinderGarden reminds us to stop and smell the roses once in awhile. We thank those families who, in addition to their unrestricted giving, generously donated funds to these special projects, as well as financial aid. Many thanks to the Facilities Committee and staff for their work done over the summer to see all these projects come to fruition. Lastly, a significant portion of net revenue was allocated to debt reduction and our endowment. This is my opportunity, as development chairperson, to thank everyone for all of their contributions. Thank you to the Pegasus community — parents, alumni families, grandparents, administration, faculty and staff — for your unwavering financial support of our students. Thank you to Lisa, Dan, Sarah, and Debbie for your leadership and commitment to our school. Thank you to the Development Committee for your support and ideas. And last but certainly not least, thank you to Sue Harrison and the entire Office of Advancement for all you do, each and every day.
I keep trying in the face of adversity.

M ethods of Giving Charitable contributions to The Pegasus School are imperative to maintaining and enhancing our program and facilities. Listed below are options that you may wish to consider when making a gift to our school. CASH Most gifts to Pegasus are cash contributions for which donors receive tax benefits to the full extent of the law. Checks should be made payable to The Pegasus School. Corporate Matching Gifts Many corporations have chosen this method to support primary and secondary education. Companies will often match or multiply gifts made by employees, and sometimes spouses and retirees. Please consult your employer’s Human Resource Department to determine their matching gift guidelines. A list of participating corporations is available from the Office of Advancement. MEMORIAL AND HONOR GIFTS The Pegasus School gratefully recognizes gifts made in memory of or in honor of a friend, family or faculty member, or to acknowledge a birthday, graduation, anniversary or other significant event.
SECURITIES One of the best opportunities for charitable contributions is a gift of appreciated securities. Donors may realize substantial tax savings by transferring appreciated stock or securities, held for at least one year, to The Pegasus School. Capital gains on the amount of appreciation may be avoided, and the donor receives a tax deduction based on the fair market value at the time of the gift. Please contact the Office of Advancement to make simple arrangements for the transfer of securities. GIFTS IN KIND Donations such as computers, office equipment, furniture, classroom supplies, athletic equipment, and other items in good working order relevant to our programs are welcome. Donations of new or used, ageappropriate books may be made specifically for our library. The gift value is determined by the donor through appraisal or record of purchase. Please contact the Office of Advancement if you’d like to donate a gift in kind.
PLANNED GIVING Exceptional benefits can be realized by the donor when making a planned gift. In a variety of ways, you can make a planned gift that does not deplete lifetime assets, and in some cases, furnishes additional income and significant tax deductions while still providing for your heirs and helping The Pegasus School. The simplest method is to remember Pegasus in your will. Other vehicles include trusts, annuities, and gifts of real property. If you have included, or would like more information to be able to include Pegasus in your estate plan, please notify the Office of Advancement so we can add your name to our Legacy Society. NAMING OPPORTUNITIES The Pegasus School has identified a number of naming opportunities to recognize those families and corporations who make substantial gifts to the campus. For further information please contact the Office of Advancement. The information provided here is general. Your attorney, accountant, or tax advisor can provide additional information on how these methods of giving apply to your personal situation. Please contact Sue Harrison, director of advancement, to discuss your gift to The Pegasus School.
I can be counted on. I take charge of my learning. MAY TRAIT FOR SUCCESS: RESPONSIBILITY

P
arents and Teachers Organization 2010-2011 – Buffi Hendrix, PTO President The Pegasus PTO would like to thank all of our generous and dedicated volunteers and donors. As always we were extremely busy and flourished in supporting our school during the 2010-11 school year. Here are just a few of the highlights: • As our teachers and faculty were preparing for the arrival of our children, the PTO indulged them with a hearty lunch and yummy dessert to keep their eagerness and passion forging ahead • The First Day Social kicked off the 2010-11 school year with a bang by welcoming our new Head of School, John Zurn • The PTO changed things up a bit with our largest fundraiser of the year by hosting a very successful Jog-A-Thon by raising over $80,000. There was a sea of green as the 8th graders ran with Cure Duchenne capes who was awarded and awarded the organization with a portion of their fundraising efforts • The PTO funded over $30,000 in Teacher Wish List items such as Mac Books, cameras, easy up tents and nature field trip backpacks which includes binoculars, books and butterfly nets • The Circle of Life themed Grandparents/Special Friends Day, made all of our special guests feel like they are truly a part of our Pegasus Community
• Teachers, students, faculty and even some parents pulled out their 80’s fashion, comfy pajamas, college sweatshirts and team jerseys to celebrate Spirit Week. The week ended with lots of fun at Olympic Day including a motivational speech by our very own Pegasus mom and Olympian, Caroll-Ann Rosenberg
• The Spring Fling Staff Appreciation Week was cherished by all! Flowers, luncheon, coffee cart and snacks were just a few of the “appreciated“ activities
• Lastly, the infamous bounce houses and face painting were the highlights of End of the Year Party enjoyed by our lower school students. So thank you again to all of the Pegasus PTO supporters and volunteers. We are looking forward to another successful and exciting 2011-12 school year!

A lumni Relations Our alumni are attending school, working, and living all around the globe making a difference in almost every area possible. We have bred scholars, doctors, entrepreneurs, artists, and future leaders. Their time is valuable, their talents are endless and their drive to succeed is evident. In 2010-11 the Pegasus Alumni Association invited its young scholars and professionals back to campus to share their experiences since graduating from Pegasus. Following is just a glimpse!
Hathaway Award Recipient
Scouting Traditions
Keeping with tradition, 2010 Hathaway Award recipient Wyatt Robertson delivered an inspirational speech to our students at the Middle School Academic Awards.
Brothers Anthony ’10 and Christopher ’07 Jusuf volunteered at our end-of-year party while teaching students how to tie various types of knots. Christopher recently held his Eagle Scout ceremony as a member of the Pegasus Troop 911.

Pozin Family Hosts Reunion
Our 2011 Spring Benefit, Vegasus was fortunate to have several alumni volunteers. Shelby Bolen ’09 brought her friend Kellyn along for extra help.
Over sixty alumni and alumni parents attended the class of 2006-10 reunion at the Pozin Family home. A feast catered by Avila’s El Ranchito, a heart-felt speech by Coach Tyler congratulating our 2011 Wings of Honor Alumni Award recipient, Nishan Tchekmedyian ‘97, and the generosity of the Pozin family – Bob, Bano, Nate ’10, and Leila ’06 made for a wonderful day.

DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE Vatche Tchekmedyian ’99 met with Pegasus fifth graders to discuss his Pegasus, college, and medical school experiences. Vatche graduated from Edison High School, attended New York University, where he majored in anthropology, and entered the David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California, Los Angeles, where he graduated president of his class. During his visit to Pegasus, Vatche was impressed with our fifth grade class as they discussed his undergraduate major, anthropology. When he asked the class if they had heard of the term ‘Cro-Magnon’ and the tools they used, several hands went up in hopes to deliver the correct definition. As the UCLA Medical School Student Body President, he created the Professionalism Council with the objective of upholding the actions and character of fellow medical students. Vatche shared that during the presentations of his meetings, he was always thinking about what Coach Tyler taught him about character. Vatche gives Pegasus students the following advice, “work hard, listen to your teachers, do your best and you’ll get to where you want to go and Pegasus will help guide you in that direction.”
PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE 2010-11 On Golden Wings co-chairs, Lisa and Dan Kassel, hosted a new parent fiesta at their home in October. They invited a panel of alumni from various years to paint the picture of a Pegasus graduate. Our highly articulate and entertaining alumni gave a presentation that we are proud to have fostered. Our panel consisted of: Chad Bailey ’95, Danielle Schulman ’98, Miranda and Hayley Young ’03, Laura Faith Goetz ’06, Nick Jaber ’08, Kevin Kassel ’09, and Jack Clement ’09.
Alumni Parents Connecting
Interesting Careers
Alumni parent, Toni Rios, welcomed fellow alumni parents to her home for a morning brunch last spring. This was the perfect setting for Head of School, John Zurn, to engage alumni parents on the future of Pegasus and encourage their participation as ambassadors of the School.
Christine Shepard ’03 oversees the multi-media at R.J. Dunlap Marine Conservation Program in Miami. In January, we were fortunate to have her visit our first graders and educate them on the importance of shark preservation as part of their study on whales and marine life. Christine’s passion was to find a job incorporating cuttingedge science and art and is excited about the opportunity to work in an environment that is crucial to ocean life.
Alumni Author
Alumni Standouts
Pegasus Middle School students caught a glimpse into the world of Pegasus’ first published author, Laura Faith Goetz ’06. Laura discussed her book Amanda Phake: The First Phake I.D., the creative writing process, and encouraged students to set, follow, and execute their goals. We anxiously await her sequel.
Alumni Kendra Eaton ‘04, Blake Myers ‘08, Victoria Davidson ‘07, and David Penner ‘06 attended the Mt. Olympus donor celebration where they all delivered many laughs, memories, and insight into what a Pegasus alumnus achieves after graduation.

A lumni Association 2011 eighth grade gift It is with our deepest gratitude that we thank the Class of 2011 for contributing to the Outdoor Education Scholarship Fund established by the Class of 2010. This fund provides financial assistance to students who would otherwise not be able to attend Astrocamp, Catalina or Yosemite trips which Pegasus students agree are highlights of their Pegasus experience. The Class of 2011 created cement pavers, placed in the Laura Hathaway rose garden, to commemorate this generous gift.
